I think you misunderstood my question, due to poor word choice on my

irregular checked pattern on the surface. On one of my cars I have a
serpentine belt that has that kind of wear on the smooth side, but the
ribbed side still looks good. I'm wondering if I should change it.

I've never seen that pattern on any of the 15-20+ belts I've had on my
cars. If the belt seem pliable and supple I expect I'd go with it (but
ALWAYS carry a spare belt). I change the belt whenever I do work on the
tensioner (unless it's been very recently changed) and keep the best of
the old belts as spares. These belts seldom fail without clear visible
and audible warning well before they actually do fail, but you do need
to pay attention. If the belt makes noise FIND OUT WHY and fix it!

Re: [MBZ] 115 blower??

2006-05-26 Thread Sunil Hari

i still maintain that the best course of action is that when your blower
motor goes, sell it to someone who doesn't need a fan and buy one with a
working blower motor.

MB lists the job as 18 hours labor, IIRC, to do it the Benz way. If you go
the trans-speaker hole route, it can be cut down to 5-6 hours, BUT you end
up with banged-up knuckles and hands and lots of swearing. The whole car
was built around the blower motor on the MB assembly line, so getting to it
is the bear.

I know of ONE man who paid my indy to replace the blower motor. Took my guy
13 hours, but I -think- he gave him a deal (instead of NL rate of $70/hr).
The car was a 1974 240D, reed green with green MB-Tex interior, original
owner, Concours-grade. And it was his wife's car, and she demanded it be
fixed.

Dropping ATF onto the shafts is the best known way to quiet noisy blower
bearings. Dunno if it's prophylactic, though.

As usual, Marshall calls the truth without even looking at the car. An
inspection of my idler shock reveals that it is spoiled (spins around, can't
be tightened.) It is the source of the sound.

I bought a shock and idler (to keep in the trunk with allen wrench) for
future.

Still haven't touched the wretched shutoff valve. AS a test, I plugged in
the vacuum line to the new shutoff valve and watched from inside the car as
I turned the key "off." The new valve closes all the way. TIME to pull the
old one out? Oh po.

It is unlikely to fail until there is considerable noise from the area
(and you have driven it a lot and it hasn't failed YET), but if the
idler is more than a few degrees out of parallel with the length of belt
above it, I wouldn't be taking any long trips. Be sure you have a 12 mm
allen hex key/socket that will fit the lever. I'd also order new plastic
front covers for the idler and tensioner lever to keep dirt out.

In my experience, the belt/tensioner/shock/idler assembly require
attention about every 75kmi, but not every piece needs to be replaced
every time. The shock absorber seems to be the shortest lived element.
The original equipment ones seem to last about 75-80kmi while the
aftermarket ones seem to fail at more like half that interval (but they
cost less too).

Did you read the instructions in the workshop manual 85-536 & 538

There are about 20+ pages describing what needs to be done AFTER the

Removing/replacing evaporators in 126/124/140 cars is NOT fun - takes
12-30 hours depending on level of skill and which chassis you attack.

David asked:<
acceptable, as long as the ribbed side isn't cracked>>>

Hi David -
I think you need to look carefully at the underside of the belt - there's a
place where a pulley reverses the direction of the belt and exposes the
underside (on my W124 diesel it's next to the power steering reservoir) IMO,
the underside if the best indication of the condition of the belt. BTW, the
belt is inexpensive (less than $20 for W124 300D's) and installing it is
pretty easy.

If there's any question about the condition of the existing belt it's false
economy not to go ahead and change it (IMHO)--

I have some in a little tube (you only need a bit -- it goes a long
way), and it oozed out in the toolbox and made a huge really sticky mess
on some wrenches. A baggie and some carb cleaner fixed it. The stuff
works well.

Buy the lever, the idler wheel, and the shock. If you don't use it this
time you will the next time. If there is ANY deviation from parallel
between the belt and the idler, either the idler or the lever OR BOTH)
require replacement.

If the play become extreme, the fan blade can hit the idler and if it
does it can shatter taking the radiator, ATF and oil hoses with it and
that CAN destroy the engine. Even if it doesn't destroy the engine, it's
an expensive repair!

Inspect the location of the idler with respect to the belt every time
you open the hood and expect to service the tensioner system about every
75kmi (or sooner if you use aftermarket shocks). Replace the belt if
there are ANY cracks on the ribbed side. I get 50-100kmi from belts (and
always keep an old belt as a spare for emergency - the belt can be hard
to find when you need one on a Saturday or Sunday - even some dealers
don't stock them).

Permetex makes some brown stuff that comes in a bottle, with a brush
attached to the cap. It never really hardens, just gets sticky. It's
sometimes called "aviation sealer." That would probably be my first
choice for an application where you want easy removal.

Tip: Do not, under any circumstances, spill aviation sealer in your
toolbox. It will make everything in there sticky forever. BT, DT.

Another option is to use something like orange Permatex, but *only*
apply it to the side of the gasket that faces the pitted surface. Don't
use too much, and wait for it to set up a little before installing. The
non-sealer side of the gasket will part to let you remove the pump, and
then you'll have access to scrape the gasket and sealer off the other
side. I used to use this technique for VW valve cover gaskets. I'd
glue them to the cover with sealer but leave the side facing the head
dry for easy removal. (Veedub valve covers come off every 6,000 miles
for valve adjustments.)

That's the Elmira correctional facility. The Holiday Inn is usually invaded

out of storage in March. It has about 1/4 inch of play.

The 2.5 is a SWEET motor.

Hi John!
Hope you're doing well. Do you know how long your tensioner has had the
play you mention in it? Since I just bought my 300 in Feb I'm not sure if
mine has been like this for 12 weeks or 12 months.

another point about it being designed like this - the "hot" hose (on top)
will degrade much more quickly than the cool, lower one. Since the top hose
will degrade more quickly it will need replacement more often and being on
top makes this much easier. This isn't necessarily a MB innovation but is
common on most cars since the lower hose can be a PITA to change. The
designers were looking to make the mechanics' lives a little easier for
once - and to make things a little lighter on the owners wallet. ;-)

The most common reason people replace the top hoses on Mercedes is
because the plastic top radiator connection breaks off - usually because
the motor mounts were not replaced when they degraded so the hose and
radiator were stressed. I have not had to EVER replace a top hose except
following accidents. The hoses on my present cars (and the ones I
retired over the last 4-5 years) are/were almost all original.

[MBZ] '83 300SD transmission

My mechanic has another '83 300SD at his shop (almost a twin to mine-dark
brown leather instead of my palomino) that blew about 1.5 qts of transmission
fluid out the vent the other day. Fluid is not burnt, and the transmission
still shifts fine. Car was being used for errands, running about 5-15 miles
at a time during the day. Engine coolant was at normal temp. Any one have
ideas about what might have happened? My mechanic is wondering if there is
ever a problem with the trans fluid cooler collapsing and causing a pressure
buildup. What other things might have happened? TIA all.

Actually as I remember the prison was in Elmira. Theres a Holiday Inn in Elmira
that we stayed in too but the Radisson in Corning was nicer. I think I did 3
different systems there. Used to like to go to the Outback in Big Flat after a
long day shooting.

Did you read the instructions in the workshop manual 85-536 & 538 FIRST?
There are about 20+ pages describing what needs to be done AFTER the
dash and center console are removed (that's another 10 pages).
Removing/replacing evaporators in 126/124/140 cars is NOT fun - takes
12-30 hours depending on level of skill and which chassis you attack.

[MBZ] 300D engine anyone?

Hi

I met a guy who has a nice 83 300D, but the engine came unglued
somehow. He is looking for a decent OM 617 turbo engine. If anyone has
one, please send me price, condition, location information off-list. It
needs to have compression within spec so it will start here in the
winter. lfaeth at leadingchange . com

I'd consider buying a whole car if the price is right. he can take the
engine and I will use the rest for parts.

Re: [MBZ] NY highways

Yes, I have had mine up to 80 on along flat roll here along the coast.
But not an option on I 81 ,esp. in NY. Maybe in the Shenandoah Valley
section in VA.

I owned several 240D's. They can speed wide open @ 80 MPH, providing you
don't come across any hills.

Re: [MBZ] NY highways

I81 goes from Canadian Border south through Syracuse and Binghamton to
I40 in TN just east of Knoxville. When they were building the
Binghamton-Scranton stretch in the 50's we used to sneak on it with our
bicycles and ride before they opened it officially. Great thrill for
12-13 year old boys. Learning to use gravity on the hills was good
preparation for owning a 240D. (diesel content.) Is it Moose day yet?

[MBZ] Gasket sealer

The water pump mating surface on my '83 240D is somewhat pitted, so I want
to use some sort of sealer on the gasket when I install the water pump. Can
someone suggest a sealer that won't make removal too difficult?

Re: [MBZ] NY highways

Yeah 81 runs North and South around Binghamton. I'm more familiar with the
more North area between Syracuse and Watertown. Nice place to have the AWD
and Blizzaks in the winter (:
Boy, I hope you weren't responsible for the Simplex system that was in the
Corning plant up in Canton. I had to take care of the computers that dealt
with that thing and it seemed like an outdated nightmare. (:
I'm assuming you were training for Corning Inc. in Corning, and not a
prison, since I'm not aware of one right here... (:

Kaleb,

One other thing I do to check evaporator is to let the car sit and then
use

leak detector on the drain hole under car. My experience is that most leak
detectors will go off if you blow air across them. Thus since Freon is
heavier than air it will drain out the tube/drain hole. This has been a
far

more accurate method, in my personal experience, than using vents for
detecting bad evaporators.

Also when you replace evaporator you will want to check the vacuum vent
motors. I know I had to remove dash recently on my 420SEL to replace one.

I'll take the spaciousness under the hood of a 123 240D, and the

That is a good question- I've been wondering about mine too. I have at

another point about it being designed like this - the "hot" hose (on top)
will degrade much more quickly than the cool, lower one. Since the top hose
will degrade more quickly it will need replacement more often and being on
top makes this much easier. This isn't necessarily a MB innovation but is
common on most cars since the lower hose can be a PITA to change. The
designers were looking to make the mechanics' lives a little easier for
once - and to make things a little lighter on the owners wallet. ;-)

You just might have a hit show on your hands. All you need to figure out is
how to make the TV equipment both highly mobile and nearly invisible so the
targets would come toward it ... Shouldn't be a problem coming up with
enough rednecks and others with guns, or people to watch. Maybe large

Ned,

It's 30AMP strip fuse (similar to the ones used in GP

Re: [MBZ] Light range adjuster ?

I think the instructions say to adjust at zero, but I adjusted mine
on the 90's 300TDt at 1
so that I can move to zero and adjust the beams upwards a bit on the
highway.

Mind given I installed e500 lamps with relays to power both the
regular H4 high beams and
the inner high beams that really does light up the country side when
more light is called for.

I'm inclining toward doing the adjustment with the switches in #1

Hmm...I would think the adjustment would be done at 0 with the vehicle

Re: [MBZ] 126 evaporator

Smashing away at the interior of the PnP 126, I am sure it is closer to
20 hours to do it right. Must involve removal of the windshield, a
plasma cutter for the firewall and employment of dwarves to get into
the really small nooks and crannies where the screws are hiding.

I think the one on my 90 420SEL has a leak. Charged it about a
month
ago with autofrost and it cooled great. Well now its leaked down so
it

doesnt cool very well at all. Checked all over with my leak detector
and the only time it went off was when I had the system going and the
air blowing out of the vents, stuck the probe into the vents and it
went

off. Thinking about trying that fancy sealant stuff.

Not quite as bad a a W140. About as bad as a 124 I'm told (I haven't
tried one). Review picture of 124 ready to receive a new evaporator.

That's about 13 hours according to Mercedes flat rate table (I'm told)
and almost double that from at least one independent flat rate table.

For $120, Gump has far less rust, and much more power with all the
power leeches missing.

Far too expensive for my blood with all that rust and sun damage. Was
thinking I could fly in and pick it up for the trip to OkieQ, but not
for $900.

Re: [MBZ] 126 evaporator

I know how to get at the damn thing Use a BFH! Worked like a
charm for me today. Destroyed the whole thing. I am sure the next one
I do will be less time and effort.

Re: [MBZ] is this a good deal?

If it goes for double it would be a steal, at $15k, the true collector
would jump. There are all sorts of parts available for this and you
can not go too wrong with one. My subject of lust is the w113.

[MBZ] Ed Booher, do not snooze

For the condition I would expect to pay no more than $900, but he may
get lucky and sell for his asking price. Tow it to IN or just have the
job done here.

Curt,

Yo surely have every reason to keep the woman and leave the house!
She

sounds great!
Would you consider paying up for an Arizona rust free sun yellow 116
diesel

that looks great, runs great, and has had many, many things rebuilt or
replaced over the 20 years that I have had it. It should travel well
with no
additional work but who knows! I think it is worth $4500. The
engine has about
20,000 miles on a serious rebuild that should run for a long time. I
have
receipts for new parts and machine work totaling over $2700, I did
all the
labor. Same with the AC, the driveshaft, motor mounts, etc., etc,
etc. The
palomino gold interior looks really good and the seats have been
removed and
renovated, with new horsehair pads in back. Front and back bumper
skins and
rubber replaced, new headlight surrounds (with spare Euro headlights.
 The 100
watt US headlights may be the best you will have ever seen and I
can't justify

changing to the Euros).

No trailer hitch though! And it is not clear if you were thinking
diesel

power.

I am getting past the point where I can keep maintaining my fleet, and
must

consider parting with my baby.

You would be first in line.
