[MBZ] St Louis European Car Show this Sunday

2006-06-03 Thread tom savage

Vince, George, and any other St Louisans out there,

Bentley of St Louis is sponsoring a European Auto Show this Sunday from
11:00-3:00 at Plaza Frontenac, to benefit Shriners Hospital. I'll be
there for most of the show with the Kemp Museum and a '54 Gullwing. It
would make a nice venue to meet up with some local listers and ogle the
machinery. More details at http://stleuropeanautoshow.com/

Let me know if you can attend and we can try to meet up.

As I recall the transmissions from an OM60x engine WILL NOT bolt up to
an OM61x engine! If they would, it wouldn't be so very difficult to get
a 5 speed to fit into a 123 300Dt. An OM61x engine is vertical, an OM60x
is slanted at 15 degrees.

In an SL I look like a Shriner on the way to a parade, LOL.

Donald, you continue to miss the point - one Mercedes is NOT ENOUGH.
You need the SEL for hauling people around. You need the SLC for fun
and class! Even though they are Mercedes', you need an extra car when
you are relying on cars this old for your primary transportation.

Actually, you may be right. I have not tried to sit in an SLC. I have
only tried the SL's. I thought they would be the same. I am 6'3" and
275, so I guess I could fit in an SLC. I like the looks of the cars,
but I sold my 124 Diesel because I needed more room for passengers, so
the SLC would really be impractical.

That'd be pretty easy, I'd think. You could preheat the WVO with a
steam coil, if you carried some kerosene as starting fuel. Locomotives
used to do this when they ran heavy fuel oil, which is like Jello at
room temperature.

The main problem with steam engines is the fuel economy is poor.
Because they're external-combustion engines, you end up losing a lot of
heat to the environment before the steam even gets to the engine.

[MBZ] Jeep Adding Diesel Grand Cherokee

2006-06-03 Thread George Gregory
Jeep Adding Diesel Grand Cherokee

DaimlerChrysler's new Bluetec diesel engine will make its way into the Jeep
Grand Cherokee in the first quarter of 2007, the company announced on
Thursday. The engine, which will first be found in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class
this fall, is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with common-rail fuel injection.
While the engines will be supplied from Mercedes plants, the Grand Cherokee
diesel will be assembled in Detroit by Chrysler. The Grand Cherokee will
join the Liberty in Jeep's diesel lineup; Chrysler estimates it will have
fuel economy 30 percent better than the gas-engine versions, with a driving
range of 425 miles versus 300 miles for a gas-powered model.

Re: [MBZ] CA-spec '85 300D transmission?

2006-06-03 Thread OK Don

Makes sense to me - I'd think that they'd tilt the intermediate plate
- between the engine and the tranny - unless they did away with it in
the 60x engines.

Re: [MBZ] Serpentine Belt Tensioner Components

2006-06-03 Thread M.Afzaal Khan
Thanks for the useful info, well prepared in advance for the
replacements.

Regards
mak

The original tensioner arms and idlers used on '84-'85 OM60x engines
seldom lasted more than 50-75kmi. The later ones seemed good for
75-150kmi. By the '90s they may still be better (the aftermarket ones
MAY not be - I haven't had any of them in long enough to know). Factory
shocks seem to last 75+kmi while aftermarket ones seem more likely to
fail by 50kmi. The belts on my cars seem to go for 75kmi as long as the
arm and idler are in good working order (a bad arm, idler, shock or any
belt driven accessory will cause a belt to fail prematurely).

YMMV as climatic and environmental factors DO play a role in life of
these parts.

Re: [MBZ] Branson

2006-06-03 Thread stefan_attaway
Easy, they send you a ticket, you refuse to pay, scratch the credit file,
and then your file gets updated at checkpoint. Now your master file has an
additional piece of information, a.k.a., a mark against you that will never
go away.

It is not like it used to be gentlemen, private enterprise has been allowed
to be the gatekeeper of all your personal information, and the arms stretch
far and wide in regard to your personal life. Email such as this are
retained at the ISP's at both end, and if keyword match, another dB in
Virginia.

It's all connected now, take care of it, or it will take care of you. This
is the result when ignorant Americans, the 60+% who refuse to vote, allow
the minority to rule the majority. This is the new world order, and we are
only 5% of the world population and no longer the top of the totem pole.
It's only going to get worse.

Rest assured all your personal data resides in overseas dB, and on occasion,
key fob memory card devices. That's the result of the outsourcing trend to
overseas. Isn't that special? Don't worry, a select few got FAT at the
cost of American jobs and lives.

Re: [MBZ] Branson

2006-06-03 Thread Robert & Tara Ludwick
The driving record is what really sucks these days about getting a bogus
ticket.
I drove a semi for years and in most of the country, so long as you paid
the ticket , it didn';t go on your record, but if you fought it, win or
loose, it would show up. That little system kept the kangaroo courts of
the country in fat buisness for years, usually the town got a small bit
and the cop and the JP split the rest. I know at one point i think I
bought a steak dinner for every cop in east texas ( never once was I
actually speeding when pulled over, but in that line of work, you just
accepted it as a cost of doing buisness , it's pretty funny, the cops
carry a glove box full of blank Comchecks and other money transfer
checks so you can pay them right in the car. Had one in Arkansas even
had the nerve to show me how he rigged the rader to read whatever he
wanted..while I was filling out the check)
But now days with the computers everything shows up on a record and can
effect not only insurance rates but things as crazy as employability.
You might want to consider a trip to Jeff city , not to fight it ( that
just get's them mad when you try to mess with their money ) but in many
areas if you do go to court and beg , they won't put it on your record
if you pay on the spot. ( that's funny, if they get their money right
away, you are a good driver, but it they have to wait for their money,
you are a bad driver and a public safety hazard and should be penilized
by your insurance co with years of increased rates, and your driving
record should have a mark on it putting you that much closer to having
your license taken away, because people who don't pay right away should
not be allowed on the road )

Hi Aaron,
Thanks for the suggestion about changing the linkage sockets - I went out
and looked at the ones on my 91 300D and they're all metal - just like the
oneson my 78 240D. Perhaps the plastic ones are used on engines made after
mine ?

its the same exactly.

I think that's the problem - and the starter for the OM61xs are on the
passenger's side and the starter for the OM60x are on the driver's side.
The shift linkage cable for the OM60x transmission is in the passenger's
side and I THINK the cable for the OM61x is on the driver's side - LOTS
of little differences. The basic mechanisms are the same, but how the
bolt up and attach are rather different.

Excellent automobile. After all it is a Mercedes Benz.

If you can pony up for the lower (much) than diesel mpgs. I don't
have any solid figures but a buddy claims 18mpg ain't too bad
considering the entire package.

You'll never be satisified with the acceleration of the 240D again.

But why the drastic change?

I'll trade you that nice dry 116 for a sticky humid 90 any day. at least
you can hide in the shade and it does some good.

Bob...how do you handle it? Why it barely reached 113 here.

Speaking of.I threw a bottle of Water Wetter in today and saw the
temp drop about 3 degrees as compared to yesterday. (went to 2 notches
below 100, stop and go with A/C on) That stuff works!

Wife's car. I'd keep the 240D for me.

Her personality would fit an E420 -- large bust'd redhead.

Unfortunately, the 240D fits MY personality perfectly (sigh).

Water Wetter rocks. Back in the day the treads on that used to be as good as
the oil treads.
