If the tab is broken you just pull the door panel off, and get a screw
with a big washer and screw it into where the tab broke off from the
backside of the panel, works fine.

[MBZ] RR Front Brake Rotors - 1990 126 300SE

2006-09-01 Thread rmcmail
Hello,
I've removed the front brake rotors from my 1990 300SE (126) with the
hubs/bearings intact. I got the allen bolts out but haven't been able to
separate the rotors from the center hubs. I wonder if I could get some advice
on a couple of things.
1. Does a press have to be used to get the rotors off the hubs? Will most
machine shops do this or is it a job for an auto repair shop?
2. Is there a backyard way of getting them off using hand tools?
3. Does the hub come out of the center hole of the rotor from back to front or
front to back?
4. How much play is allowable in the outside wheel bearings. These have a very
small amount of play in them but you can move them a little.
The car has about 150,000 miles on it.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Les

IIRC, they either just about fall off or I just knocked them off with

The rotor sits behind the hub. There is no way of pulling it that I am

The total play in the bearings is what counts. This MUST be set with a
dial gauge. I seem to recall that the value is (in inches) something
ridiculous like 5 tenths (0.0005). I've always wondered if that was close
to the play that could be caused by the natural elasticity of steel

Thanks Marshall,
Your experience on these cars is encyclopaedic! I plan to change the
ALDA soon (when I replace the GPs) -- hopefully, next week when I get my
parts shipment from Rusty.

[MBZ] W123 brake bleeding, any gotchas?

2006-09-01 Thread Kevin J. Slater
Dieselers,

The 79 240D project car is nearing road worthiness again (and not a moment
too soon the 87 300TD has had numerous pending jobs postponed) thanks in
no small part to the members of this list. After the caliper rebuild and
the rear hub helicoil jobs, the only thing still on the list is a good
brake bleeding.

The left front caliper was full of air mostly once reassembled and I
attempted to pump bleed it out with the help of the car's future primary
driver, but when I moved it down the driveway the other day it became
obvious that there is still air in the system. Are there any tricks to
bleeding a W123 system? Seems like a straightforward job, but my results
to date are less than acceptable.

Wash, rinse, repeat! You do the rear first, either side first, then the
RF, then the LF. I had trouble on the 190D (using a check-valve one man
bleeder dingus) until I got the wife in the front seat and did the whole
verbal commands thing to sync the opening and closing of the bleeders
with her pedal action. Too much backwards air leakage otherwise.

You _did_ get the bleed screws mounted upwards, right? Left and right
calipers are not interchangeable.

Build this puppy to bleed them.
http://www.bmw-m.net/TechProc/bleeder.htm
Makes it an easy one man job and you don't take the chance of ruining the
seals in the master cylinder. Justbe sure the caps over the fluid lever
sensors, if you have them, and the grommets between the tank and the MC
are good. If not you will have a mess.

The only thing that works for me (short of a power bleeder or two
person bleed) is to put a plain hose (no check valve) on the bleeder,
run the hose to the bottom of the catch bottle, and suspend the bottle
above the bleeder. Siphon action keeps a slight positive pressure on
the bleeder and no air gets in through the bleeder threads. MityVac
always sucked air in through the bleeder threads when I tried to use it.

[MBZ] More Fuel Tank Anatomy

2006-09-01 Thread ned kleinhenz

Well I removed the filter from the tank of my '95 E300D and found it clogged
with slime.
So it seems like the tank should be removed and cleaned because there must
be more slime in there to just clog the filter again.
I removed the level sensor, boot at the filler, bottom hoses etc, and the 4
nuts visible from the tunk. Did everything just like the manual says. The
tank would not budge. I even started to bend it using a crow bar. WTF?
Are there more bolts somewhere on a 124 tank?

Wash, rinse, repeat! You do the rear first, either side first, then the

clogged

with slime.
So it seems like the tank should be removed and cleaned because there must
be more slime in there to just clog the filter again.
I removed the level sensor, boot at the filler, bottom hoses etc, and the
4

nuts visible from the tunk. Did everything just like the manual says. The
tank would not budge. I even started to bend it using a crow bar. WTF?
Are there more bolts somewhere on a 124 tank?

A tank that hasn't been removed since it was assembled at the factory
will be STUCK in place. You will need to CAREFULLY pry at points where
the flat surfaces abut to the chassis. Be sure you have replacement soft
parts (sound deadening material) to reinstall the tank before you remove
it entirely (it's glued in place and you need something like the
adhesive that Mercedes uses). I don't believe it's appropriate to reuse
the old soft parts.

Thanks Marshall,
Your experience on these cars is encyclopaedic! I plan to change the
ALDA soon (when I replace the GPs) -- hopefully, next week when I get my
parts shipment from Rusty.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Why are you changing the ALDA? They don't usually wear out! About all
that usually happens is that people that don't know what they are doing
damage them by playing with them. They really require setting and then
they should be stable for many, many years. If your acceleration numbers
drop a bit THEN you might want to readjust them AFTER you've made sure
everything else is working properly. Most ALDAs don't require
readjustment (except the ones that were set VERY lean right from the
factory). It's NOT something that needs periodic adjustment.

Re: [MBZ] Possible damage caused by heated WVO

2006-09-01 Thread dave walton

I bought an Elsbett kit - which was a complete waste of time and
money. The connectors did not match the hoses. Parts were missing.
They swapped nozzles on the injectors and 4 out of the 6 leaked. They
stopped responding to my emails. Okay, maybe the last few were a bit
terse, but only after they ignored me for 2 weeks. Overall a fiasco. I
was able to use it as a guide to plumb in a real flat plate heat
exchanger and ended up wrapping the fuel lines with an outer hose and
diverting coolant to heat them, and bought a new set of injectors.

The downside to a 1-tank kit is that you have to thin the waste oil
with diesel or kerosene when it gets cold. How cold and how thin
depends on the type and condition of your waste oil. I'm good to
somewhere in the 50's F before it idles rough when cold. If I plug it
in, I'm good to the high 30's F. If I thin 50/50 with diesel or with
25% kerosene, I'm good to somewhere below 0F. It's always plugged in
when it's that cold, however.

I'm a proponent of using a 2-tank setup. You save more in the long
run. Over time the diesel tank will build up a percentage of WVO from
the purge cycle, so you want to try to minimize the volume of fuel
that gets exchanged on a switchover. At the moment, I'm playing with a
high pressure coolant circuit that uses 3/8 Nylon 11 tubing for both
the fuel and coolant lines. Much easier to route than the huge 4-hose
kits out there. I'd avoid doing the hose-in-hose thing again - high
maintenance.

So, Dave...if you've found a 50/50 mix is good down to zero, then all I

If you get a sec, you should to work up a little Jim C-esque page a on the

2006-09-01 Thread Peter Frederick
Heat the rotor face at the bolt holes with a torch (NOT the hub,
please). Rotor will pop off when it heats up.

Clean the face of the hub with a wire brush and apply antiseize between
new rotor and hub going back on.

Peter.

from the factory setting, I expect the effect you've noticed will
vanish.
