I don't doubt that the early tilting roofs had problems but that has been

I have installed several. You will need the interface box from rusty.
You will also need 2 adaptors from PIE. Do a search. Let me see if I
can look at how I have mine hooked up and I will take pictures. I will
do that later today because I cant tell you specifics from memory.

LarryT wrote:

I finally found an Alpine CHM-S600 to use in the trunk of my 91 300D
2.5t. To refresh memories, I have a Becker Grand Prix head unit with a
Amp

and Tuner in the trunk. Since the 6 speakers are wired to the Amp along
with the antenna, it becomes difficult to install a new stereo and CD
changer.

So, after trying unsuccessfully for a year to have SW Stereo repair
my
Becker Silverstone Changer, I found a Alpine 600 which came with the
cable

to run from a Alpine dash unit and the OEM Interface cable.

Now I need to find out how to hook up the cables. The back of the
Alpine changer has a round male 8 pin plug which provide control and
power
since it;s the only plug there is. The Amp has a similar plug on the
back.
I was told I need a Mercedes OEM Interface Cable from MB but available
from

Rusty for ~$180. WIth the cables I presently have I'd rather not buy any
more cables until I'm sure what I have won't work.

Has anyone managed to install an Alpine changer in a 91-94 W124 with
a

I REALLY like the two tilt sunroofs I've owned. One (in my wagon) gave

The old sliding roof was well within the ability of the average DIYer to
maintain. It takes a VERY advanced DIYer or very knowledgeable pro to
maintain the tilt roof. Most people will NOT succeed by reading the

The sunroof becomes immobile when the lifting angles break.

The new ones are much more robust, but you still need to keep the

I believe there is a travel limiting switch already, it's what
stops it at the full closed position! There's only the one cable,
it just pushes further than closed which pops the rear up via an
(obviously rickety) mechanism.

There's nothing wrong with stall-limited mechanisms, the simplicity
greatly improves reliability if you build it right. You just have
to make sure the mechanical stresses are properly handled.

Our SDL's sunroof broke, and wouldn't really work right at all.
Somehow I managed to work it closed via some combination of teasing
the switch and manhandling the panel, whereupon I went back to the
motor and unplugged it.

You can tell it's not quite closed right if you look at it, but
otherwise it's fine. This was a couple of years ago. My wife

the sunroof is one of the things on the list before it gets to

Thanks for that repost, Tom. It was written about a month before I
found MBZ.org. It's clear that I never understood the tilting roof,
but I think I do now. You can pop the back edge of the S/R panel up,
or you can retract it into the headliner. For some reason I assumed
that it popped up and then if you opened it fully, it would slide
above the roof.

It also sounds like you can preserve the tilt-up roof if you don't
tilt it up all the way, or if you find a way to put a microswitch
on the tilt mechanism to limit travel?

Dunno, depends on it's position when it breaks, I guess. There is a
special tool to manually close the sunroof should it break. Below is an
old post on the subject. For this reason, I've never used the tilt
feature on any of my cars so equipped.

[MB] sunroof not working on 126 (300 SDL)
Bill Brandt wlb at lanset.com

I might add to what Richard has said - I recently had to have my 86 300E
sunroof repaired and I remember enough from the list to not even consider
trying to "fix it" myself - I took it to a good independent who has done
several dozen of these and here is the summary of what I learned:

1. The pop up function is what breaks these sunroofs. The mechanism (frame)
that stops the roof is basically pot metal (as original) and when you hit
the tilt function there is no kill switch to stop the motor/pressure - and
over the years this is what causes the breaks.

2. The newer parts are improved but still a compromise.

3. If you never use the tilt function your sunroof will last forever

4. If you try and fix it yourself, or continue to use it you will bend a tub
that the cable is in between the headliner and roof and your repair bill
goes up considerably. Worst case - they have to remove the headliner.

5. I got a $150 discount over the estimate for not making it worse once the
symptoms developed...Sort of a "you didn't screw it up worse" discount ;-)

6. Ernie (Ernst) said that I can use the pop up function with the
new/improved parts - just be aware that that as long as you hold the switch
it is applying pressure. No cut off once the stop is reached.

Personally I wish they hadn't come out with this "pop up" feature - but
there you have it...

Bill

"any words of wisdom on why the sunroof quit working on my 87 300 SDL? The
pop up function will work, but when you try to open it in the normal
fashion the passenger side drops down but the drivers side stays fully up.
If you keep holding the switch the fuse will blow. Any BTDT?"

Good evening, Mike --

Check the archives. I posted a long post about it several years ago after
my wrestling match. Don't remember what all I said, but the gist was: "the
learning curve is way to high to scale for a DIYer and the benefits (one
sunroof repair every 15 years) are not worth the ascent." Oh yeah, this
applies only to post-86 MBs (the sliding-only tops are a POC (piece of cake)
compared to the Rube Goldberg-inspired pop-up sunroofs). A tip while we're
on the subject: to ensure longevity of post-86s, manuall assist the rear
when you utilize the pop-up feature. Stop the switch immediately when it is
raised up. Same going down. Same front, same rear. They are "tender" and
have a definite length of life.

Recalling some posts from ages ago, I think the pop-up mechanism is made
of some sort of cheap pot metal, a la w116 window regulators, and that
the stop at the end of it's travel is placed too far out, which allows
it to place undue strain on itself. It is a great big deal to fix and
you've got to know exactly what you're doing. Don't know about the
reliability of the siding portion of the roof vs a slide-only roof.

That's more appropriate for the Frankenheap. When I've invested

Now I know I need to lube the throttle linkage as it sticks, and the
idle
seems high (1500 rpm). The rpm does drop to 800 or so when I put it in
gear.

The '76 model has a purely mechanical thermostatic idle air
valve that can get out of whack. (Don't know if yours has
this, or computer controlled idle.) What happens is that the
plunger retainer can start to work out of the body with time,
reducing the effective range of the valve. Then to get it to idle
at all when cold the hot idle screw is run way out and it idles
high. Your choice: good idle when hot combined with a stalling
cold-blooded beast, or a nice cold start and a rampant idle the
rest of the time.

Believe it or not, the fix for this involves a hammer!

So the tilt-up S/R was an upgrade when new, but not necessarily a good feature
to own 20 years later?

If you can find a way to heat the engine with the MM in the cylinders, it
may speedup the process somewhat -

You could try running a jump wire or screwdriver across the solenoid
terminals.

But before you tear anything up, get a socket on the balancer bolt and
see if it will turn by hand. If it's been sitting a long time, it may be
a bit stuck. If it won't turn without too much force, take the plugs out
and pour some marvel oil in there and let it sit a few days and try
again. It only takes a drop or two of condensation on the rings while an
engine is sitting for a long time to make one not want to turn after
sitting. Soaking will usually prevent scoring on the cylinders or
tearing up the rings.

We're getting a nasty thunderstorm here too. I'm trying to put a new
water heater in our 5th wheel and it started pouring out there.

Break time!

Friday, June 1, 2007

More brakes. I spray-painted the caliper black, taking some care not
to get paint inside the bores, and put it in the shop oven to dry. I
then removed the other caliper and rebuilt it as well. I used a
Dremel wire brush to clean out the grooves in the pucks, as well as
the seats for the boots. Experience and having the right tools really
makes it go quicker. I also gave it a blast of paint and put it in
the oven.

The master cylinder came off easily, and once it was off I stuck a
plastic tube (from my topside oil sucker) down in the booster to the
bottom and sucked on the other end. A lot of nasty-looking fluid came
out! It was definitely time to replace the master cylinder. I washed
off the booster and blew it dry, then rattle-canned it black. There
was a lot of paint gone because of the brake fluid leak. I then
installed the new master cylinder and transferred the reservoir to it.

The calipers went back together easily. The big secret is to put the
boots on the pucks before they go into the bores, otherwise it's a lot
harder. Brake fluid is used as an assembly lubricant. I don't know
if the orientation of the asymmetrical face of each puck is
significant. I could find no information about this, so I didn't try
to line them up with anything in particular. The calipers went back
on the car, and the hoses were replaced. The PB had presumably done
its job, the old ones came off easily.

Finally I enlisted my wife's help to bleed the brakes, which went
smoothly. I then cleaned up the mess.

...Driving to work the brakes worked very well. No more squeaking and
scratching noises, and braking power was even and good. Nice. At
lunch I stopped at Schuck's and NAPA, but neither had the little
rubber covers for brake bleeder screws. I'll liberate some more next
time I go to the U-Pull, I'm missing three. It was hot out today,
time to work on the AC! (It needs a charge.)

Saturday, June 2, 2007

I jacked up the front of the car. I then wire brushed off the damaged
paint areas and rattle-canned black paint on there. I even had some
medium blue that I used to hit the bodywork below the brake booster.
I found a can of spray-on undercoating, so once the paint had dried I
put that on the bottom surfaces. I did a bit of chipping at the
undercoating on the rocker panel, and it was good. One small loose
spot I removed and treated as above. No sign of rust in the rocker
panels, or anywhere else underneath. The body brace behind the
driver's brake strut was loose so I tightened that. I vacuumed out
the crevices in the hood hinge areas.

I then checked steering linkages. All seemed tight, yet I could still
wobble the wheels a bit more than I liked. I backed out the adjusting
nut on the steering box 3/4 turn, about half of what I could back it
out using only my fingers. (Which was definitely too far.) It's not
really much tighter, but we'll see how it behaves. I don't think I
went too far, but we'll see. If there's a 'notch' in the steering
around center I'll know I definitely went too far and will have to put
it back some. The steering box may be worn out, or I (working alone)
may have missed something loose beneath.

I next drained the tranny fluid. I enlisted my 5-year-old son's aid
to lie under the car on the creeper and tell me when the torque
converter drain plug showed up in the access window while I rolled the
car over via the power steering nut. Slick. I dropped the pan and
found it pretty clean inside. The fluid in the pan was a bit murky,
but not bad. Stinky, too, like mothballs. Fresh fluid smells more
fishy to me. I removed the filter and put the new one on. (There's
no way you can do this job without getting oil all over the place, no
matter how careful you are.) I washed off the pan, and scraped off
the grime on the outside. I mopped it dry and wiped it out with my
hands to remove all lint and grit, and set it in the sun to finish
drying. I put on a new gasket, wiped off the pan gasket surface on
the bottom of the tranny, and reinstalled the pan. I then poured in
three quarts of fresh fluid, started the car, and poured in another
three and a half. No leaks appeared during this.

I took the car for a quick test drive and it drove normally. The
transmission shifted as before. Sadly, there was no miracle cure.
The steering seemed a bit tighter, and I don't think I've taken it too
far. We

Re: [MBZ] Just got my 1980 450sl running

Dave,
wouldn't drive it that way too long. The tranny can overheat real
quick at a stoplight.

On 6/2/07, The Wakin's <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Well, the thunderstorm passed over so I went back out to try and get the
450sl going - I whacked a little more on the solenoid, checked some wires,
and she fired right up.Thanks to those who gave me advice.

Now I know I need to lube the throttle linkage as it sticks, and the idle
seems high (1500 rpm). The rpm does drop to 800 or so when I put it in gear.

I looked quick under the hood, and didn't see an idle control valve like I
thought it would have (as on the 420sels I have owned). Anyone know what
controls idle on this, and what the proper RPM should be at idle?

Thanks,

Dave Wakin
