Re: [MBZ] Installing new Delco R-4 Compressor
- Original Message - From: "Peter Frederick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Just pour it out of the hose connections. > Peter The manual (CD) mentions measuring and adding oil to the compressor if you're working on some other part of the system. In that case it would seem like there would be some way to drain the compresssor without taking it out. Also, if you changed from R12 to R134a and switch to PAG oil, you would have somewhere between 60 and 170 cc (ml) of R12 mineral oil in the compressor mixing with incompatible PAG oil if the compressor wasn't drained? [MBZ] Engine thanks me for a drink of oil?
Following recommendations I have been holding off on adding any oil to the 240D until the level reaches the "add" notch. I've been noticing a less than ideal level of valvetrain noise coming from under the hood. I went ahead and added a pint today. The level before adding was a tad above the add line. When I started up and drove away, the engine seemed quieter. It would seem that if adding oil (within proper limits) quiets engine noise, it is a good thing. For all I know, the difference in noise is of no consequence, but that seems a bit counterintuitive. Stock wheels are in a metric size (a brief Michelin experiment that never caught on) for which tires are outrageously expensive. Takeoff 15" or 16" wheels from many later BMWs will fit and are cheap and easy to find, though. The automatic trannies self-destruct if revved in neutral or park (e.g. during an emissions test). The manual is bulletproof. Various plastic bits in the motor dry out over time and fail to do their job of oiling the valvetrain, necessitating a top-end rebuild. Other than that they are extremely long-lived, well-built cars---generally considered the most reliable BMW ever. If it has been taken care of, you will be astounded at the handling and performance---like your old 124, but much more so. Half the mileage, though. I think they're great cars. I don't own one, but many friends do. I feel they're ever bit as reliable as a benz; those that I know would say even more so, and most of them have owned Mercedes too. I know it is hard to understand but there is a whole bunch of places outside the US of A. A lot of those places have vehicles which are not available in the good ole USA. Like the 230TE. Just like other parts of the world never got models available in the good ole USA like the Diesel S class and 123 coupe. Further it may come as a shock to learn that people outide of the good ole USA have learned how to use a computer and access the internet and even how to sign up to mail lists/forums. I realise that usually the only Americans that travel outside of the states are wearing funny clothes, have very short hair cuts and carry rifles but yes life exists outside of the USA as well and yes we do have trouble with odometers. - Original Message - From: "Fmiser" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 10:37 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Odometers > But a 230TE - maybe you guys _are_ discussing non-W123s > > -- Philip, whose W108 is gone, so there's nothing but W123s now. > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The first thing that happens when the reset button is press is the drive gear is lifted so the tripometer is now "de-clutched". As the button is pressed further, the gears spin back to zero. When the button is released, the last action is to re-engaged the odometer drive to the tripometer. It's like shifting gears than locking the brakes. Sure, it causes wear - but so does pulling out of the driveway. Re: [MBZ] Odometers
No one is saying that reseting on the move once or twice a year is a big deal, however when it becomes a habit then the problems start. Think of it a sending a shock through the system, everything is turning nicely and you slam the brakes on. Would you regularly lock up the rear wheels via the handbrake? No, why not? Because something in the back of your mind tells you that this can't be good for the drivetrain, same with the little reset button. Anyway i think this subject has been covered from just about every angle and what people do to their cars is their business. The advice stands, whether people choose to follow or ignore matters not. - Original Message - From: "Jim Cathey" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 1:20 AM Subject: [MBZ] Odometers > > Having just become intimately familiar with the guts of the > offending unit, I can in no way see how resetting the trip > odometer, moving or not, can place any significantly greater > torque on the drive gear. Re: [MBZ] ABS Flush
Larry, I would encourage you to begin soaking the fittings with penetrating lube if you haven't already. As for the ones that the gorilla rounded off, try taking a pair of ViceGrips to them once they've been soaking for a couple of days. It's not an ideal approach, but it's worked for me on a couple of occassions. As for bending the new line, remove the old one first and use it as a template. If you take your time and do a little at a time, you'll have no problem getting the new line to a reasonable facsimile of the original - as long as it fits and doesn't rub on anything, you'll be good for several 100k... Re: [MBZ] ABS Flush
Thx Dan, Yep, way ahead of you. Actually, I was going to replace all the rubber lines and flush the brake fluid when I discovered a chimpanze had worked on the calipers at some point in the past. All 4 bleeders ere rounded off like they'd been tightened with a pair of pliers. Rather than risk taking the car off the road for several days as I attempted to repair the bleed valves, I bought a set (4) of '95 E300D calipers from a fellow lister who upgraded his brakes. I cleaned them up and painted the making them a direct replacement along with the almost new Padgid pads and excellent rotors. Then my nightmare took a turn for the worse when I found the rear metal brake lines had been tweaked by the same monkey. All the flare nuts were rounded off. Great, just great. So, Rusty ordered one from Germany and had the other on the shelf. Now, I have 2 straight metal brake lines which I will need to fit into place by bending them properly. More fun. Can't wait. Anyway, I finished the fronts because they were the less damaged of the 4. Next, I'll tackle the rears when my wife can be without her car for a little while. Not looking forward to removing the brake lines from the splitter next to the diff. - and like the idea of bending & fitting the metal lines it promises to be filled with agony. I'll probably need to cut them off somehow. That's the whole sordid story up to now. When I replace all the rear stuff I'll probably have some more problems to report. ;-) Have a nice week - Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs . - Original Message - From: "LWB250" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Monday, July 23, 2007 2:46 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] ABS Flush >I would seriously consider replacing all the brake > lines at this time as well. Re: [MBZ] WAS i'm going insane NOW rust repair
You have to decide if you are tired of the car and want something else. If so, it would be a waste of your effort to make repairs. If you are not ready to move on, then get it fixed - assuming the rust is not too bad - as at least you know the car. A "new" old car carries a lot of potential risk with it. Re: [MBZ] ABS Flush
I would seriously consider replacing all the brake lines at this time as well. As they age they swell internally, cutting down on the amount of fluid and pressure that can reach the calipers. It's a cheap part and the difference is noticeable. Worst case scenario, you get a line that has swollen badly enough inside and it acts like a one way check vale and your caliper on that wheel locks up. It happens. Wipe them down with a solvent rag to get the oil off and then check them again for oil in a couple weeks. Green O- rings are readily available at most auto supply stores in any size you should need. I don't know any "kits" being available. My note to the list a few days ago indicated that Harbor Freight had a nice assortment, on sale, for $9.95. It is very unlikely that you will get an external seal on an O-ring leak. If you have one you can't get apart, soak it with your favorite penetrant and leave it a few days. The correct size wrenches must be used to prevent distorting the clamping nut which will bind it even tighter. Now is a good time to point out that the clamping nut on the fitting does little to seal the fitting. It does not need to be torqued more than about 15 foot pounds to compress the O-ring. The new green O-rings can be installed dry but I would put some antiseize on the fitting threads for ease of removal next time. If the car is all original, I would rather buy a car and see what I'm getting and just adjust the price I pay. Always wonder about those cars with fresh paint that are being sold. What are they hiding?? :-) Sure you could fully document the paint and rust work, but I don't if such effort and cost is worth if for these cars. Aren't you in Canada? Re: [MBZ] Installing new Delco R-4 Compressor
> I woud have thought pulling a vacuum would remove any existing oil. Not a chance. The flow rate is too slow to pick up the (heavy) oil and drag it along, and once there is a partial vacuum the transport mechanism pretty much stops. Of course, if you're using R143a oil it will evaporate under a deep vacuum, this is one reason that de-moisturizing a R134a system with vacuum doesn't work so well. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] Odometers
This morning's Chicken Wagon update: I removed the failing odometer from the car. I looked at putting cyanoacrylate glue on the shaft, and even tried a bit, but it didn't want to wick into where it needed to be and tried to sieze the shaft where it goes through the frame. Things are just too tight there for the 'quick fix', I don't know how anybody does it without ruining the odometer. Time for Plan B. I removed the face of the speedometer, first lifting the needle over the zero stop and ensuring that it rested on the little mark on the edge of the dial that marks its zero tension position. I then used the two-spoons trick to pop off the needle. Next I removed the odometer drive shaft entirely, liberating all the plastic dials. The pot-metal drive gear (in the non-visible tenths position) was really quite loose, but sometimes would bind a bit. Looking inside the bore of this gear it appears that there might be a bit of spring wire coiled in there that is supposed to 'bite' on the shaft. Anyway, I knurled the shaft where the metal drive gear seats using a pair of pliers. One must be very careful not to mar the shaft where the plastic dial gears are as they must spin freely. While it was apart I used alcohol and a swab to clean all the dial faces, the trip odometer was particularly filthy. I then reassembled the shaft and dials, which was not easy. It took a few tries before I got everything aligned so that it would function and the dials lined up through the holes in the face. I added some miles to its reading to partially compensate for the time it was broken. I had to tap the shaft into its final position with a hammer as the knurling made for a tight fit. After it was all together it worked freely when driven by my thumb. I then reinstalled the speedometer face, put the needle on the shaft so that it pointed at the resting mark, then lifted it back over the zero stop. I then greased the drive gears and put some M1 5W20 on the sleeve bearing. With this all done I reassembled the instrument cluster and installed it back in the car. I also squirted a bunch of oil down the drive cable. We'll see how it goes! > Perhaps the previous owner of the 230TE, that odo came from never used > the > reset button, no way of knowing really. Having just become intimately familiar with the guts of the offending unit, I can in no way see how resetting the trip odometer, moving or not, can place any significantly greater torque on the drive gear. If it does, the amount is nearly trivial and the drive gear is already about to fail. It takes _considerable_ torque to roll over a bunch of dials at once, that drive gear is supposed to be _tight_.

If you plan on keeping the car it may be worth fixing the rust. If you plan on selling, it's IMO very unlikely you will recoup the cost of the repair. Re: [MBZ] Odo reset 190DT
I just got into the habit of keeping a little address type binder (one of those little 3-ring things) in my driver's map pocket. When I get in the car first thing in the morning, I record the date and mileage. If I get gas, I record that, and write the mileage on the receipt. If I do any work on the car, I'll write it down under that day's entry. I don't go so far as to record costs for things like oil and filters, but if I had to come up with numbers I could get pretty close. I have a file folder in my desk that I toss all the receipts in, so I've got the details if I need them. I don't know much about A/C servicing, but in general pulling a vacuum will only remove gases from the system. Unless the oil evaporates under vacuum (which I doubt) it will remain. The 123's where the worst affected out of all MB's in regards to odo failure, guess they had a few too many come back broken and decided to increase quality standards. Re: [MBZ] Odo reset 190DT
I swapped out a combination gauge (with a dead clock) in the SWMBO 1985 300CD turbodiesel coupe Saturday at an MB Club DIY tech session. After I reinstalled the instrument cluster the temp gauge and fuel gauge now bounce around erratically and the glow plug light comes on intermittently. I am now officially in the doghouse (even though the clock works) until I fix this new problem. Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated...? [MBZ] ABS Flush
Howdy - I am replacing my rotors & calipers on the - 91 300D 2.5t W124 - and flushing the brake fluid as I bleed the system. I am using a Pressure Bleeder and maintaining 20 + #'s on the bleeder. I am using Ate "Blue" brake fluid so I can tell when fresh fluid has filled the part of the system I am working on - I'll use the Gold Ate next time. . However, the blue seems to appear pretty quickly and I am worried the ABS unit may not be being flushed. Didn;t see anything in the WSM about it - should I proceed as I am or is there something else I should do when bleeding? BTW, I have rebuilt the calipers and cleaned any sludge out so they're in good shape. Am I doing all that is needed or is there more I need to do? I just by them Don, but I looked a LOTS and I've heard so many stories, if they can't back it up with some paperwork, I just walk. I too keep similar logs. Like Dan, I can tell you every gallon of gas that has gone through my porsche from day one, including all parts, service and even drives. Not as fussy with the benz and I'm in and out with it, but I certainly log all the gas, oil, plug checks etc. Not that it does much good with that car as there was a gap in the paperwork. I knew the guy I bought it off or I would have passed on this one too. Looking at some s Classes now, and a few others when sellers saying all the right things to push my buttons. The next one will have to be fully documented, and I'm will to pay for it. :-) Ed 300E On 23/07/07, OK Don <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Paperwork. Now if I could just take the time to put it all in an Excel spreadsheet. Dan --- OK Don <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Paperwork. Paperwork. I log every gallon of fuel and every quart of oil that goes into the car. YOu can extrapolate the miles from the fuel used - assuming that you have an idea from previous experience of what the fuel consumption is. On the other hand, are you implying that you actually SELL cars? I seem to only buy them ;-) On 7/23/07, E M <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Mine is still ticking at 340,000 kms in the 300E. [MBZ] Installing new Delco R-4 Compressor
I'm replacing the compressor and the dryer in an '83 240D. According to the MB CD and the instructions that came with the new R-4 compressor from Rusty, oil must be drained from the old compressor and measured, and new oil added to the new compressor according to a formula. Can someone tell me how to drain the oil from the old compressor and add oil to the new compressor? This isn't described in 83.6-522 or 83.6-522 in the CD or in the paperwork with the new compressor. There is a brass plug with a green center near the bottom of the new compressor, and an aluminum or steel plug near the top of the new compressor which would take a special wrench to remove. Also, the CD instructions 83.6-520/3 says not to add any oil to the dryer if it is newly replaced (at the same time). Re: [MBZ] OT: Free motor oil
No more free oil. I just went through that whole thing, it says to click on it to join the free penzoil thing, but once you do a message come up saying they're done with that one. ---Robert Sunil Hari wrote: > http://www.firstdriversclub.com/login.jsp > > if you become a (free) member of their First Driver's club, then join the > "Pennzoil Platinum" campaign, they'll send you a free case of Pennzoil > platinum motor oil.
