Yes-pads are now about 90-100, frames about 300. Sorry I wasn't clear-on
this. On this last one, I got an extra seat bottom from the passenger's side
that I got the car seller to throw in for free. -But since I sometimes
spend 3-4 hours a day in mine, I always regarded it as worthwhile, but YMMV.
In fact I am thinking of advertising my rusty 240D as a totally rebuilt seat
for 500.00, car is thrown in free.

I just checked my records-in 2002 a frame was 120.00

2008-05-04 Thread Dave H...
Hi folks,

Well I fixed the flashers and signal lights (I think) Now how about those
dash lights.

My experience is that MBs have very dim dash lights. As this vehicle does nto
even have the rheostat in place I figured just run a jumper between the two
rising terminals form the Circuit Board.

Still no dash lights

Am I missing something?

OT for this question. Lord DON'T EVER take the front driver's seat out of a

Re: [MBZ] ebay WTF??

2008-05-04 Thread LarryT
Kaleb,
Have you tried the Restore feature? You can tell the puter to go back a
day, a week or a month to find a place in time when it worked -

Restore is located at "Start\all programs\accessories\system tools\system
restore"

It is reversible and instructions are straightforward -

Might work. BTW, if you go with the new HD save the old one to use as a
slave - mount in the cabinet with the new one or get a external enclosure to
hold it - Mad Dog makes some good ones. Then you can probably copy the
files you want to keep then wipe the disc and reformat it then use it like
an extra HD which it is -

Good luck -

Kaleb, et al.
The restore feature has it's own pitfalls. Some virii write
themselves into the restored file and are difficult to remove, for,
as soon as you rid the computer of an infection the good old windows
restore feature, restores the virus.
Turn off the restore feature and thoroughly clean the disk. This will
break the clean, restore, virus-re-infect, clean, virus etc. chain.
YMMV

[MBZ] O.T. Computer Trauma/Stuff Running in Background

2008-05-04 Thread Robert Rentfro
How can I, the biggest computer maladroit any of you know, figure out what
should be running on this machine when it is turned on?

One issue: It is lately stupid slow (it is, btw, an HP Pavilion 555y), lots
of freezing up ("program not responding"). Another is it takes almost four
minutes on start up before you can do anything and those four minutes are
spent with the hard drive churning non-stop, little light full on. Another
issue: the kids somehow got my space, my space messenger, windows live
messenger, aim, and something else to open every time I start this machine.
I have to sit and wait until they are done with their gyrations to close
them.and this is after I have to wait the initial four minutes.

I'm running Spysweeper with the virus protection. It finds lots of crap
every time it does a sweep. Doesn't seem to help performance, however.

I seem to remember once going to something like "msconfig" or something like
that and seeing a list of all the stuff that should be running in the
background and being amazed at all the crap that was running. I vaguely
remember deselecting stuff and performance improved.

Can anyone tell me how to get to that list and what I should have running
and how to get rid of the crap?

Lots of questions but I'm a computer special needs guy solidly on the tech
short bus.

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Computer Trauma/Stuff Running in Background

2008-05-04 Thread Jeff Zedic
The reason for the page size increase is the huge amount of graphics,
scripts and annoying ads.

The best thing you can do if you've got kids getting at the machine is
to create a separate login account just for them. You retain
administrator rights and they can't install anything without your
approval.

This will also not run their crap when you want to use it.

How full is the hard drive? Is it making any noise? When was the last
time you defragged? When was the last time you ran scandisk to check
for errors? How much RAM do you have?

Most of those kiddie programs, AIM etc. start automatically. Right
click on their ico in the bottom right corner and open them. Go into
options and unclick start when windows starts or whatever wording they
use.

Check in the main menu/start for other programs listed there.

Personally I'd swap to a Linux distro. All those messenger progs can
be handled with ONE messenger prog in Linux. The distros out now are
painless and intuitive. They run miles better than MS junk. You really
won't notice the difference much after the first week.

I think the user accounts and passwords are the best resolution.
Perhaps a clean install?

I can walk you through any changes you need to make if you want to
phone me. It's easy stuff.

Ditto Bob, you spoke for me also. Looking forward to hearing some tips on
speeding things up.

I read on a friends blog that about ten years ago, most pages consisted of

huge change, says he.

Let me know if you have any more computer questions, as you can see, I'm

[MBZ] OT - computer trauma, etc.

2008-05-04 Thread Wilton Strickland
My 10-yr-old computer with Windows 98 was running very slowly and hanging up
a lot, too. Coupla weeks ago, I improved iit a LOT by defragmenting C
drive, which had not been done in its 10-year life.
I clicked My computer, right clicked ONCE on C drive, clicked properties,
clicked on the general tab and disk cleanup, checked Temp internet files,
Temp files, Recycle bin, etc., clicked OK; then I clicked the tools tab on
the properties window and selected Defragment - defrag took about 3 hrs.

Re: [MBZ] OT - computer trauma, etc.

2008-05-04 Thread LWB250
Defragging helps to some extent, but regular
defragging won't make a significant difference. The
areas you need to watch are:

1.) Swap files. Windows, especially the older
versions like 98, used a dynamic swap file, that is,
the swap file was constantly changing based on systems
needs. You can get a pretty decent speed bump on the
older systems by going into the system settings and
set up a fixed swap file size, rather than letting the
system do it. 10% of your total hard drive space is
usually more than adequate.

2.) Free space. If you're getting to the point where
you've got little or no free space on your system
(C:\) drive, get a bigger drive or clear off some
space. Rule of thumb is never have less than 10% free
space on a system partition (drive.)

3.) Adware and malware. Nasty stuff. You would be
absolutely amazed at the burden this crap puts on the
system, and you won't see it in msconfig or anywhere
else. When I used to do consumer PC work I had a
running contest with some of my buddies to see who
could come up with the most adware infected machine.
I think my best was around 7,000+ infections on ONE
machine. Needless to say it was running at a crawl.
If you've got kids who are constantly surfing the
'net, the best investment you can make is to buy a
license for Ad-Aware (lavasoft.de) and let it run in
the background. The free version is good, too, but
you have to run it manually.

4.) Memory. Later Windows OS' are memory hogs, with
Vista being the all time worst. Memory is cheap - get
as much as you can afford or your machine can take.
If there is one thing I told my consumer customers who
were always asking me about upgrades, it was, "Buy
more memory."

[MBZ] OT, IE problems continued

2008-05-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well it appears I have all the spyware crap gone, have run several
programs to get rid of it, and finally it runs and doesnt turn u p
antyhing. Still have IE problems. IE starts, says connecting but never
connects or does anything. It will eventually say not responding and
you have to force it closed. IE works fine with other things, like MB
service CD, but connecting to the internet this is what it does. Also,
wife uses outlook express for email, and it seems to be doing about the
same thing.

check the amount of free spae on the hard drive - less than 30% free and it

I can't imagine driving one of those in Detroit city traffic. The 98
and 99 E300 have a turbo and intercooler and get the same mileage.
Rust can be a problem, however.

THe 060 engine is remarkable, and will get that kind of mileage --
Hans in Houston has one and has reported similar mileage. I believe

2008-05-04 Thread Russ Williams
Bob,

Start by going to this web site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
Next open up the Run Command [ Start > Run ]
Type in msconfig Click OK.
When System Configuration Utility opens up click on the "Start Up" Tab
On the Left hand column you will see a list of commands
Start at the top and one by one use the Search feature at the Bleeping
Computer
web site and use the recommendations they give for turning off the programs.
WARNING DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR ANTI-VIRUS By mistake :-) .
When you finish Click the Apply Button on the Bottom.
Windoze will tell you You'll Need to Reboot.
Reboot
You will get a Dialog Box Stating you Have Changed Start up settings.
There is a Check box that says not to show again. Check the Box and
click Ok.

Also there is a good, and best of all FREE, program to get rid of the
Temp Internet files
and other Crap on Your system. Originally named Crap Cleaner it has been
renamed CCleaner
can be found at: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds Download the
Slim Version
It doesn't have that darn Google Search bar included.

Good Luck

[MBZ] 300SDL vibration

2008-05-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
If you recall, I have this SDL with vibrating driveshaft. Well, I got
under this SDL today to check to see if the lines were lined up for the
driveshaft halves. Well they were. So that is not causing the
vibration. The center support looked fine to me, as did the flex disks.
So, not sure what could be causing it. I suppose the U joint may be
causing it. Seemed OK but I guess the only real way to tell is to pull
the driveshaft out.

If you mean installing Windows over a current installation, you can't do
that (You could on a Mac even 10 years ago ... )

Those you can remove ("Add/Remove Software" on Control Panel) and then
reinstall.

I'd still be wondering if there were something the anti-spyware/virus

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Computer Trauma/Stuff Running in Background

2008-05-04 Thread Scott Ritchey
My experience trying to "fix" issues after a PC has been hosed isn't good.

What has worked for me is:
1. Get a good-sized external USB drive and save all your personal files on
it (pretty much everything in C:\Documents and Settings\"Username")
2. Get a disk image backup program like Acronis.
3. Blow away everything on the old hard drive and reinstall the OS from
scratch or a use the system restore CD/DVD if one came with your PC.
4. Make sure you have working firewall and anti-virus programs running.
5. Connect to the internet and get all the patches from MS, probably will
require several iterations.
6. Reinstall your personal programs.
6a. Do a full image backup to the USB drive periodically in case one of your
personal programs clobbers the machine again.
7. Do a full image backup after all programs installed but before loading
your personal data files. This should only be a few gigs and may fit on one
DVD. Save this backup to restore the PC next time instead of going through
steps 1-6.
8. Copy your selected personal files from the USB drive to the Documents
and Settings folder. Only copy stuff that you know what it is in case there
is malware lurking. Some programs (like Outlook/Express, Mozilla, others)
store mail, shortcuts, etc. in non-intuitive places and you may need to hunt
for those files the first time.
9. Finally, if you have room on the USB drive, do another full image backup
of the whole thing.

I have found the free MS SyncToy program very useful for backing up selected
data files (like email) on a daily/weekly basis providing you have an
external hard drive (USB or NAS) to store it on.

I also find it very convenient to create an applications folder on an
external drive (USB or NAS) with subfolders for each of my personal software
applications (and text files for associated keys). This makes
reinstallation very fast compared to finding and swapping all those
installation DVD/CDs. This worked fine for everything except Roxio Easy
CD/DVD Creator 6 which fatally messed up the drive letter mapping when I
installed it from my NAS.

A final note, when I travel with a notebook PC, I find an external 2.5 in
USB drive VERY convenient. It is smaller than the equivalent stack of CDs I
would need to carry and I can easily copy email and other data from my
desktop PC to the USB drive and then copy the updated files back to the
desktop after the trip. These drives are reasonably priced now and much
cheaper than a new notebook with a bigger hard drive.

Im thinking about just trying to do an install over my current install

an overlay so to speak, see if it cleans something up. Looks like I
ahev got rid of all my spyware, have no viruses, but I still cant get IE

Were you able to run it up to speed and verify that it's the drive

You can install Widoze over the top of it self.
The problem you will run into is the New install doesn't
touch the Registry files so if there is junk in the Registry
it will remain.
Kaleb try using the Registry in CCleaner to get rid of the crap left behind.
I'll send you a program off line that may repair your Internet connection.

OK - based on IE working for local content but not Internet content,
perhaps the IP stack is at fault? DNS isn't working? Try pinging web

2008-05-04 Thread Dave H...
Craig,

TY for the response.

I have taken these bulbs out cleaned them and observed them lighting up when
possible.

I do not know were I would check the back of the instrument cluster to
verify the existence of power

Yes, Marshall I have changed all of my fuses.:)

Its not been a good day electrically.

I decided to find out why my 93 300E and 92 300TE headlight wipers did not
work.

Broke a brittle frame around one of the 300E's light assemblies and dropped
one of the light assemblies out of the 300TE. Then I broke a very
corroded/would not separate plug on the other 300TE light.

I now have four working headlight wipers in my shop. However, hook them
back up and not one of them run. (Headlights on, windshield wipers on
clean, engine running) All fuses are good so I decided to cal it a day.
All the lights working on the 300E but the 300TE looks like it has been
abandoned. :)

[MBZ] Quirky thermometer readings

2008-05-04 Thread Bill R
I have been having erratic temp readings and have tried several things
suggested to cure. Last week my aux fan would not turn off, so after a few
hours I took the car to the shop. My nephew opened the fuse box and tapped
on a relay and the fan shut off and the temps have registered where
expected - at least most of the time. A laser digital thermometer showed
that when the gauge said 120 no part of the engine or cooling system was
above 180F, so the problem seems to be with resistance somewhere. Manfred
is planning a visit to Jax and we'll check things out.

I did have an unusual end of the week with it, though. After the three day
event to get the injection pump straightened out, which resulted in a great
improvement in the shifting and almost complete stopping of the smoke, a
wonderful drive for a few days. On Thursday it started shifting hard,
idling fast [but 750 - 800 RPM and not 7500RPM], and if the AC was on I had
to get out and push to get it going. It did that until Saturday morning,
when it reverted back to a perfect lady. Great shifts, able to keep up with
traffic leaving stop lights even with the AC, and just a really nice ride.
Elves, Dwarves, or whatever. I'll still take it in for a once over, but I
really don't want anything different than this - except for it not to do
that again. My Darling wife and I are planning a 5 day Memorial weekend and
I don't need something like that.

Does that sort of thing ring any bells?

 30
30 mm is = 1.181 inch
25.4

1-3/16 inch = 1.187 inch, a lot closer than 1-1/4.

For the intermittent power loss I would check the pressure line that goes from
the back of the intake manifold to the ALDA on top of the IP. I haven't
followed your great IP saga, so forgive me if you've already done that.

Another thing you might want to check is the wastegate hose (depending on your
turbo it may/may not have one. It should be pretty easy to see if it does. It
is on the front of the turbo and goes down to the bottom underneath the
compressor housing.

Regardless... it sounds like you aren't getting boost all the time or the IP

Don:

Since my wife now has an 88 300TE, I regularly go back and forth
between driving my 126 (300SD) and a 124 gasser. The 300TE is a fine
animal, and I covet the wood shift knob, but I'll still take my 300SD
every time.

Although the TE is much more powerful, quieter, and smoother, the SD
is much more roomy and comfortable, even in the front seats. The
seats, in particular, are much larger in the 126. I'm about average
build, but I really notice the difference. There's no comparison in
ride quality. And believe it or not, although the TE has much more
power for the weight, I find the 126 more fun to drive, because of
the low, flat torque curve--the 3-liter gasser likes to really wind,
and throttle response around town is pretty logey.

Not dissing 124s at all. It's a great car. But it's not a 126. Also
find the start-in-second trans a bit odd, tho first does launch you
with vigor if you use it, and it would make it a great trailer towing
car. But why not four gears that you used all the time? Odd.

That said, I sure wouldn't want a 126 300SEL--you'd have to wind it
pretty good to get it to move, I'd imagine. If the 300SDL is the
ultimate touring car, the 300SD ain't far behind. Mine has 307k on it
now, and I'd very much like to get another 200k out of it. 2,400
sounds reasonable if its a good one, but I wonder why someone who
obviously is very knowledgeable about mercedes and has been
maintaining this one fairly well is suddenly bailing--especially 2k
miles after new tires. I'd want to know the whole story.

Wrong - you need to apply the emergency brake so the
drivetrain can't move, then get under there and twist
at each joint to look for slop. If the U joint is
bad, you'll know it without taking the shaft out of
the car.

What do the differential and transmission mounts look
like?

Re: [MBZ] 201 rear tranny flange removal

2008-05-04 Thread Hendrik & Fay
I would advise getting a 3/4 drive socket set because the nut on the
rear drive shafts is the same as the one at the back off the tranny and
those nuts are tight tight and need to be done up tight tight. Not a
drama with the rear tranny flange because it is not that tight and
having a bad fit socket will work but once you get into the 200nm range
you want a good fit as you stand on the bar to tighten/loosen the drive
shaft nut.
I just bought a cheapish 3/4 drive set (27 piece with AF and metric) for
AU$120 and a half inch drive adapter, just for one quality 30mm 3/4
drive socket they wanted AU$30. Now if I cheaped out and just bought the
30mm socket and adapter I would have been stuffed when it came to doing
the drive shaft nuts plus I have already employed the 22mm socket to
easily undo the control arm bolts.

Craig, Kaleb-

I used a 1 3/16 12 point but unless you've got a deep socket you may
not get to the nut- there is a centering shaft that is > 1/2". . I
used a 3/4" drive socket with success.

To hell with lousy geeky computer forums, you guys are, as the kids say,
bomb. Thanks Russ for this link. I was able to get rid of MANY things that
were running at startup. I heeded Wilton's and Rick's advice and it helped
also. Zedic made a great deal of headway in people's efforts to convert me
to Linux. This pig is blazing fast now. This was a productive Sunday.
Thanks smart guys.

Good Luck
Any questions contact me here or off line at the above address.

My headlight wipers do not operate on either the 92 300TE or the 93 300E.
Neither wiper system worked when I got these vehicles. I had two working wiper
motors so decided I would change some stuff out.

the final result three sets of working wiper motors (work fine in the shop),
all new fuses in both vehicles.

I am trying to operate them, in the vehicle, with the headlights on, the engine
on and the windshield wiper in clean mode.

Besides a fuse or a motor where else should I be looking?

Yep, the truth is coming out. Bio Diesel is causing a serious third world
food shortage.

Wait till they figure out the real impact that Ethanol production has on the
world. We are already experiencing record food inflation, partly due to
higher oil prices but more directly related to the fact that so much corn is
going to Ethanol!

Then there's the long term impact of compact florescent bulbs. Every one
contains a bit of mercury. I don't know about you but I throw mine out when
they burn out and I bet that 99% of the county does the same. So, do mercury
tainted landfills appeal to you?

Everything wrong with big business and/or government:(

Keep biodiesel local! Use waste feedstock when available!

It was never intended to be the omnipresent answer.

It wouldn't be. Just a bit less horsepower (and worse fuel economy,
oddly enough) and a bit less legroom in the rear seat. If neither

Otherwise, both great touring cars.

Re: [MBZ] OT, IE problems continued - backup system

As a testament to what Don said, a few years ago I asked a friend who worked
at Publix [major Florida based grocery chain] about the new building going
up a the back of an area near where he worked. He said an internal study
showed that a computer system failure would most likely cause the company
and it's hundreds of stores to end up bankrupt. They were constructing a
fully redundant system in a separate location. The more you need a computer
system the more you need good protection and backup.
