Re: [MBZ] photos of the new E-Class
Maybe it is a official leak to test the market, manufacturers will sometimes do that if they are not sure if their styling is heading in the right direction. Yup. Lemon juice. Boil it in the microwave, do it a few times to get all the smoke out, and this is after you clean the inside as good as possible. Yea, Im quite sure I could turn a profit on that 140, even if it did just get parted out, which I dont think would be the case. I think Im going to go ahead with that deal anyway. Then maybe it's a good thing to pursue anyway. Maybe you can go around ahead of the sales manager and tell them you will contract to do the work for what they were paying AT. Go freelance. A decent defense ought to be: "If it was so valuable, why was I (and that business) let go?" Done right, I don't think you'd need a defense. I don't recommend my local friends go to a 4-year university for computer stuff if they aren't already total geeks; A college/university is not a trade school. If you need _training_, go elsewhere. If you want an _education_, that is, training in how to think, reason, research, etc., take on a college degree at a good facility. If you want to learn how to change fans, RAM, and power supplies, find a tech school. Colleges are good for scientists and engineers. Technicians are better served elsewhere. (All three are necessary for a big creative technical company to be successful. At my best job, my favorite tech and I were nigh unstoppable. We weren't big/creative enough to need scientists. IBM needs scientists, Dell probably does not, but may have slots for engineers. The corner computer store needs techs at most. [MBZ] The joys of an Italian Tuneup
The zany place I work for called me Monday and told me they needed me in Louisville in the middle of the night to plate coliform samples from this big stormwater event they do a couple times a year. On Wednesday at 2am, no less. I'd been wanting to take a highway trip to see if I could get rid of the nasty injector knock on #6 that I have since I replaced the injection line over Thanksgiving -- the car is starting to smell better (that is, it doesn't reed of diesel fuel anymore) -- and I don't really want to have to replace an injector. I was afraid some of the metal shavings might have gotten into the plunger and stuck it. So I take off at about 11 pm my time, stopped for fuel, and drove off into the rain and fog. About 70 miles into the trip, just after I passed the interchange for Leavenworth, IN, my cell phone rings -- they don't have as many samples as they thought they would and don't need me! Been nice if they'd called a few minutes later, as I had to drive almost 15 more miles to the next interchange, but better than 45 more to Louisville, and then through town down to the south side to find out I wasn't needed. For some reason the car kept going faster on the westbound half of the trip, into the wind this time. Lots more power, less foot movement to keep speed, and I kept zooming up to 75 or so on the downgrades. Still raining and foggy, though, but no traffic to speak of. When I got off the interstate and made the first stop, total silence! Narry a clatter or clank to it, nice and smooth and quiet. Still rattles a bit in the morning cold, but none of that "whack, whack, whack" of a stuck injector. Lots less smoke, too -- I can hardly see any in the rear view mirror even at night, and it has lots more punch. Now if it just settled the rings down and cured that blowby I don't like. The real money these days is in the trades, such as being a plumber. You are never downsized when it comes to clogged toilets or slow drains. These skills are recession proof. Even in the midst of an severe economic depression, each citizen still has to poop each morning and would like to flush afterwards. A man will go a month in arrears on his mortgage if the toilet won't flush and he has to decide between the plumber or the mortgage. My two university degrees are worth little more than the paper they are printed on when it comes to finding a job, except to say that my current job required a four year degree to even get to the interview process. The big-box store doesn't even need those.) -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Coolant Leak/Vacuum in Radiator
Look for a leaking hose somewhere -- coolant will go out when hot, but when the engine stops, the pressure drop as it cools will pull the hose down onto the nipple and seal it off. And maker sure its vacuum! Squeeze the radiator hose when it's cold -- if it's hard, you have a leaking head gasket or cracks somewhere! Vacuum in the cooling system can be a defective radiator cap, too -- can cause the upper radiator hose to be pulled flat cold. Re: [MBZ] Buying freeze is back on
Kaleb, I sell stuff on CL all the time, fully 10% of my sales meetings are missed by the buyer. Half of those I never hear from the guy again. No good seller will be a jerk that you lost your job and want to hang on to your cash, and you don't want to deal with a bad seller anyway. He might even hire you to get it running, and/or part it on commission. Might be worth suggesting in fact, give him your number and let him mull it over; if someone had offered to part - or fix on spec based on the future sale - my Volvo for 20% I'd have been all over it, 50% I'd have thought pretty hard. Contrary to the others on the list, I was glad I cashed out my 401(k) when I lost my job in early '06. It wasn't a lot but the 80% kept the mortgage and important bills current, so when I got a real job we weren't too far in the hole; when I paid the penalty and taxes it was 12 months later and by that time I had income. Of course the market was pretty good at the time and we didn't mind being out for a few years (not bad speculation in retrospect), so the calculation was different. Does OK have state technical schools? That might be a fast way to a mechanic or paralegal or nursing certificate or something. My wife's been going to one here and I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the program. I don't recommend my local friends go to a 4-year university for computer stuff if they aren't already total geeks; the market (here in NC at least) is not good enough to make it worth the investment of time unless they just really would do it anyway and can afford being out of work for 5-6 years, in which case I say carpe diem. :) There are lots of other degrees/jobs in which there isn't so much labor competition; many of the restaurant owners, general contractors, and mechanics around here used to work at pre-2000 Nortel/Cisco/Lucent/IBM/etc. I've recently been solicited for two jobs with investment firms (a dramatic industry change) too, so look there; they must be seriously shorthanded as I'm not at all looking. OTOH like others have said if you can keep doing what you're doing on a 1099 from local dealers, go for that. You can go to school on the side if you want to get something else on the resume. (After all someone has to take stock photos, having all the autos in one lot is so 20th century. Bet you could spin the model to cars.com :) Sorry to hear, though. It's tough to be on the receiving end of a layoff. Hope it goes well for you between now and then. Best, -Tim -Original Message- From: "Kaleb C. Here is the deal. Autotrader.com bought another company called carspot.com end of last year. Carspot does the inventory collection competing with another company called Dealer Specialties (which used to be owned by trader publishing but split off when our company split a couple of years ago. Apparently the story I get is that this Carspot company is not doing so well, so it sounds like autotrader.com is getting rid of it, shutting it down, or something. So, Im not sure the ability will even be there to do that even from a contractor standpoint, since the infrastructure will no longer exist. There is alot of backend stuff that goes along with it that I assume will no longer be there. They have not got my package together yet, but I will have to sign something Im sure. The last time this happened and I was offered the package, or the choice to take a different position, the severance would end if I took a job with another Cox company, or with Dominion which is the other half of our once whole company. Dont remember anything about competing, ie, working for say another advertising company of some sort for example. Especially the Burlington Northern line, where they have three tracks and the outermost tracks are for the local trains inbound and outbound, and the center track is for the express line (inbound in the AM, outbound in the PM). People would get off the train, glance the other way and the tracks appeared clear, and then try to hustle across in front of the stopped train so as not to have to wait for it to clear the station -- only to be creamed by an express train they never saw, doing 60 MPH on the center track. Incidentally in the city of Chicago, they have almost no grade-level railroad crossings. That's not true in the suburbs though. Shheeettt, sorry to hear about the lay off, maybe it's time to go into the Merc wrecking/fixing business full time. The problem I see with the 140 is the price of parts, especially if there was piston - valve contact (which I doubt) but still, someone over here had this happen to a 126 420SE and it cost him a lot to fix, parts alone where something like AU$3-4K. Perhaps talk to Rusty and come up with best and worse case scenario. Either that or bodgy it up and sell it to some sucker but there again finding a buyer is gonna be a bit of a pain. Anyway best of luck, at least now you know where you're at and can move on, perhaps get a temp job as Santa in the local mall. Hendrik Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: yea, thats true. Crap, I dont know. The Engineer is taught to hit the floor [danger of decapitation from flying hoods] and said that other than the sound he was not able to detect even a shudder in the train when it demolished the rather substantial truck. He also still remembers the look of sheer terror on the face of the driver when he realized the situation he had put himself into. Do be careful on those RR crossings, you might gain a few minutes each time you are right, but you will lose big time if you are wrong even once. Re: [MBZ] photos of the new E-Class
Not bad. Not sure about the rear end, hard to really tell from the pics. Looks like the tail lights may be integrated into the rear fender arches a bit. Angle of the rear lights reminds me a bit of that high end Nissan (Infiniti), which I wasn't too fond of. I like the new S, so I think some of those styling elements look good on the E too. I've seen a few pics of the new E interior, and it's very similar to the S. As far as the current lineup of cars goes, I wish they had carried a bit more of the styling of the new S rear end over to the coupe. I think the sedan's rear is much more elegant than the coupe's rear. It's nice to see some boldness with the design of the last crop of Mercs. Also nice to see the quality returning to where it should be in cars in this league. This brings up an important point - be careful about your employer trying to foist a non-compete or some other arrangement that would prevent you from doing something competitive. Since they're laying you off it would be difficult for them to do, but that's not to say they wouldn't try. I had a former employer try this when they RIF'ed me, and I refused to sign the paper. It was a part of my severance package, but when I balked they backed down. Re: [MBZ] Buying freeze is back on
I doubt if they would post train crew openings on the web site. You apply to the company, get accepted and then go to a school (not too long, if I remember). This isn't the sort of job that the average individual has experience doing, anyway. There is always turnover (retirements, etc.) so they would have to have a pipeline of new hires going all the time. Dispatcher is another nice job but forget where they are located. What is the worst that can happen if you apply anyway? On Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 2:38 PM, Kaleb C. On the bright side, I know I have 30 days left to start looking, after that I know I will get at least 8 weeks severance pay, maybe more. I think I will get a cash out on my pension which wont be much since they just started that when cox took over. Not sure what to do about my 401k yet, dont know if I should roll it over into something or just cash it out as well. I dont have much in there, only been in it a year or so, probably have 3k in it, which is way down from what it was since all the crashes etc. Then if worse comes to worse, I still have cars and parts I can sell to raise cash, unless I get forclosed on or something, then Im screwed. Wont have anywhere to put all my crap so I will probably just have to dump it quick. "Wonko the Sane" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said: > http://www.unionpacific.jobs/careers/working/index.shtml Cool -- certainly the idea of working for a railroad is very "romantic" I would think, for a lot of people. Drawback I would think would be the potential for being away from home a lot, at least if you're on the actual train crew. Apprentice Diesel Mechanic...that sounds really cool - and a neat training program too. Unfortunately, no openings around KC or Claremore/Tulsa. Im thinking now I should move it all into a fund that is no losing so I dont lose anymore money between now and whenever If whenever is 20+ years from now just leave it alone. I'm a big fan of index funds... super low fees and they are used to judge the performance of other funds. I especially like them since I won't be retiring till 35 years from now. So I guess now is the time for me to buy like crazy. Keep in mind that I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
