Re: [MBZ] A neat Combination
Yeah it is still there. I stopped by last week sometime, the guy was still fixated on $1k for it. Very nice car though. He said it runs fine, drivable and all, just starts bubbling a bit in the coolant tank from the head gasket leak, I guess the PO didn't want to pay to have it fixed, and with the market as it is it probably doesn't pay for him to fool with it. I would guess some wealthy individual just walked away from it and went and bought a new one -- we have a fair amount of that crowd around. This mech always has a nice older Benz or two in for minor repairs, he seems to be a decent sort of neighborhood mech out here in the sticks, so he gets a fair amount of business. The SEL is there, body rot and bad paint but only 85k on the odo, though it could be broken. Interior was in good shape. It was an Ohio car (for some reason a lot of people from Ohio come here) so that explains the rot. The guy said it was a good runner but with the rot it wasn't worth fixing up. He said make offer on it, I offered him $750 for the SD, he said $1k, I said both cars for that, he didn't want that deal. Like if he said yes I would do something with them both... I have to go away this weekend, might ponder just buying the SD when I get back and see if wifey lets me back in the house. You have a good block that head will go on? --R Kaleb C. [MBZ] OT: A/C clutch noise
I got summoned to pick up my parents when they wrecked mom's car today. I met them at the hospital and then went to the impound yard to empty their car and take pics of the damage. On the way back to the hospital, my Achieva started making a noise, kind of like a bad alternator bearing. Turns out there was some steel on steel grinding in the A/C clutch, which throws the occasional spark with the engine running and the A/C off. Turn on the A/C, the noise goes away, and my mpg drops 3-4 points because I'm running the stupid A/C full time. What's it take to remove an A/C clutch? Is it rebuildable? Might just need a bearing. The system doesn't leak and I've no desire to open it up or disturb the hoses if I can handle the problem with the compressor mounted to the engine. Unfortunately, compressor is down low and I don't know if I can take the clutch off through the fender. I filed a claim with his insurer, State Farm, and after a long delay, they basically told me that if I wanted to get paid I could sue. By then I was working 11pm-7am seven days a week, and could barely manage my own life without messing with a suit. I wish I had found the time to sue the guy that hit me, just so I could tell him if he didn't buy crappy insurance he wouldn't be taking time off from work to sit in court. Re: [MBZ] OT: A/C clutch noise
Sorry to hear about your parents, hope they are all right. The clutch, if it's a Nippondenso or Kiki, should be similar to the ones in the W124 chassis. There is a bolt that holds the armature to the front of the compressor and several o-rings that hold the coil on. If you have a ocuple inches of clearance in front, you should be able to get it out, this and a seal replacement can be done in the car (although the seal replacement requires it be discharged). Likely you just need a shim under the armature to increase the clearance a tad. Peter -Original Message- From: Mitch Haley m...@voyager.net Sent: Mar 30, 2009 10:28 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] OT: A/C clutch noise I got summoned to pick up my parents when they wrecked mom's car today. Peter Frederick wrote: Sorry to hear about your parents, hope they are all right. Dad's OK, mom's got a broken sternum, which is pretty painful. Likely you just need a shim under the armature to increase the clearance a tad. I found somewhat of an exploded view, discovered that pulley bearings run on the compressor housing, not the compressor shaft, so engaging the clutch does not stop the pulley bearing from spinning. I took the belt off, there's no detectable play in the bearing, and it spins OK except for some clutch to pulley rubbing. I'm wondering if one of the spring thingies broke. I suppose the next order of business is to get down there with my feeler gauges and see if clearance is uniformly tight or if it's just one tight spot. The face of the clutch is no more than 2 from solid chassis material, but there is a hole in the chassis slightly off center to the clutch, so I might be able to take out all the plastic fender liner pieces and run a socket in there to take off the center bolt and put a puller on it to reshim. I suppose pulling the clutch so far away from the pulley that it can't work would be preferable to the fix I implemented yesterday, which was to remove the serpentine belt and disable the automatic headlamps. I drove it for a half hour today and then put it on a battery charger for a couple of hours. Can't take a long trip without an alternator however. Don't forget that the water pump is also driven by the serpentine belt on most cars -- overheating is worse thatn running the battery flat. broken sternum sounds VERY painful. The A/C might knock off a noticeable fraction of available power, but not as noticeable as towing a trailer. At any rate, a diesel Chevette has got to be faster than a non-turbo diesel LUV, they had the same engine. The turbo 4x4 LUV used to have a cult following, more so than the Subaru BRAT AFAIK. The LUV guys used to buy up Chevettes for engine parts, kind of like Sunbeam Alpines disappearing to provide body and interior parts for the Tigers. Why not, its a congressional bill, no names were presented. If you don't like the bill, write your representative. Harry That might be appropriate on Banned. So Rusty and Kaleb end up rich. What a plan. Harry My great great grandpappy was forced to be an indentured servant in the USA while onboard ship bound for the USA. (before the civil war) If that law passes, I want my 50K too. MB content: I promise to use it toward MB parts and repairs or newer MB cars. Not to mention that some of my great grandpappys fought in the civil war to free the ancestors some of these ingrate descendents of grateful freemen. For that, I want to extract another $100k from those who receive reparations It is only fair! I am a minority too! I am one! I realize the his post was sarcastic, and I haven't looked into this bill at all. My e-mail was just in response to the popular idea (which may NOT be held by the OP) that injustice is somehow a thing of the past, and trying to address it nowadays is absurd. It shouldn't be necessary to mention Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism, since it's just a fancy label for willful ignorance.
