Re: [MBZ] SL

2009-06-02 Thread Jim Cathey

I'm not going to waste time reading the ad but it sounds to me like you
don't know that MB made such an SL with only the removeable top and no
convertible top.

Pity they didn't see fit to show a photograph of the rear
seat area, that would answer the question rather quickly.
The CC's had more room back there, did they not? Else what's
the point? But I still thought that was more of a 113 thing.

[MBZ] OT: STATE FAIR

2009-06-02 Thread archer
I wasn't sure if I should send this to my female friends. (grin)Gerry

My wife and I went to the state fair and one of
the first

exhibits we stopped at was the breeding bulls.

We went up to the first pen and there was a
sign

attached that said,

' THIS BULL MATED 50 TIMES LAST YEAR'

My wife playfully nudged me in the ribs
...Smiled

and said,

'He mated 50 times last year.'

We walked to the second pen which had a sign

attached that said,

''THIS BULL MATED 150 TIMES LAST YEAR'

My wife gave me a healthy jab and said,

'WOW~~That's more than twice a week! .

You could learn a lot from him.'

We walked to the third pen and it had a sign

attached that said,
in capital letters,

'THIS BULL MATED 365 TIMES LAST YEAR'

My wife was so excited that her elbow nearly

broke my ribs, and said,

'That's once a day.

You could REALLY learn something

from this one.'

I looked at her and said,
'Go over and ask him

if it was with the same

old cow.'

My condition has been upgraded

from critical

to stable and I should

eventually make a full recovery.

My darling wife and I are living proof that a theoretical thinker [packrat]
who sees possible uses for just about everything, and a lady who is likely
to toss her keys if she is not driving today can coexist without violence.
The fact that neither of us like cleaning is probably the crossover
condition that allows domestic tranquility. Not having a garage to store
stuff in also is a factor, as we could seldom put a car in one when we did.

Its the strangest feeling ever. I come from a long line of non-organizers so
theres much inertia to overcome.

Yesterday I stripped the paint off the fount of a Coleman lantern I've
foolishly decided to repaint and last night I decided that I should get all the
rust off with electrolysis. Surprisingly it only took me a few minutes to get
the thing setup, amazing what you can do when you know where stuff is and can
actually see the top of your workbench on a regular basis.

Today I'm home with a cold. To tell you how sick I am I'm on my second cup of
tea this morning and haven't had any coffee... Some of my friends have given up
coffee and switched to tea, they're just quitters... ;)

My favorite iteration of this story has to do with Calvin Coolidge and his
YOUNG wife. The first time I was told this story, I was so young it had to be
explained to me!

While touring a farm, Mrs. Coolidge expressed amazement at the mating habits of
a rooster. She asked the guide to bring that point to the attention of the next
group, which included her husband.

Mrs. Coolidge was fascinated that our roosters mate 10 or 15 times a day
explained the guide to Silent Cal.

Call drew a few times on his ever present cigar and opined, Bet you use a
fresh hen each time.

I guess you could be right. My 1974 240D had rust, since it spent most
of it's life sitting in a field in the desert with bad door seals and
the windows rolled up. The floor pans were rusted through, and as far as
I know it was never on the east coast. I made some sheet metal patches

I mentioned that possibility yesterday.

Believe it or not, I had never heard of these until I looked at one over in

I was going to ask John Olsen about it, but the car I looked at wasn't worth

Been a while since I was on the list. The okiebenz mail server gods have
purged my sins and are sending me emails again.

If anyone remembers, I picked up a L508D Motoroam Monarch RV conversion
for $800 off ebay.com.

The old addage is right, there is nothing more expensive than a cheap
mercedes. After a few failed trips down to Mississippi I finally got
someone to help me tow her back. We had to take back roads the whole way
home which was quite a trip. A sign of things to come as the top speed
on this puppy is 55mph flat out. Perhaps a turbo will help keep her
going that speed :D.

4. Kuujjuaraapik , Quebec !

5. A rock, off the coast of Greenwood (Canadian Military Labrador

Outstanding job by a great young pilot from Pennsylvania !

Can't add anything else to this... the picture is worth 10,000
words!
If you don't think our military pilots earn their pay, you need to
take
a look at this picture.

This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue
mission.
The pilot is a PA National Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in
civilian life.

Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the end of
a
chopper down on the roof top of a shack, on a steep mountain cliff,
and hold
it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear.

Re: [MBZ] Motoroam has come home.

2009-06-02 Thread LWB250

When I get back to work (I'm in Florida right now doing geriatric care duty for
the inlaws) I'll get the dirt on the generator for you. Looks like a 4kW
Generac. I may even have a running example in good shape you can have for
cheap.

Been a while since I was on the list.
The okiebenz mail server gods have purged my sins and are
 sending me emails again.

If anyone remembers, I picked up a L508D Motoroam Monarch
RV conversion for $800 off ebay.com.

The old addage is right, there is nothing more expensive
than a cheap mercedes. After a few failed trips down to
Mississippi I finally got someone to help me tow her back.
We had to take back roads the whole way home which was quite
a trip. A sign of things to come as the top speed on this
puppy is 55mph flat out. Perhaps a turbo will help keep her
 going that speed :D.

There was a bible which was stuffed with little more than what
amounted to sales literature. I do think the generac does have a real
manual though. The most interesting bit was the color maintenance sheets
for the truck chassis. I'll have to scan that stuff in.

Right now the thing is pretty much gutted. I left the fold down bench -
bed (which all of the foam needs to come off) and the bathroom in the
rear. I think I am going to make small bedroom in the back and move the
bathroom to onside towards the front. So many options. I need to get
some CAD apps.

[MBZ] hole in block 240D

2009-06-02 Thread Peter Merle
Bought a Gwagen with an additional blown 240D engine , big end failure at #1
which threw a rod and punched a hole in block . Was wondering if the block
is repairable? Main bearing foundations not affected . I don't want it but
was hoping someone might be able to use it - or do I sell it for metal
content. #1 crankpin was 40 thou smaller than the other 3 ! I guess conrod
ran steel to steel for a while until it let go.

2009-06-02 Thread tyler

JBWeld a scrap of soup can over it and it'll be good as new!

Seriously- that block is scrap metal and nothing more. It *might* be
possible to patch, but wouldn't be worth it when you can find
rebuildable cores for almost free, and good running engines for a few
hundred dollars. I only got $700 for my 1974 240D when I sold it, and it
was a good running daily driver with a strong motor.

Re: [MBZ] hole in block 240D

2009-06-02 Thread Peter Frederick
It's junk -- surely full of cracks and possible distorted badly enough that the
sleeves won't fit.

My brother's 300D broke a crank (617 NA engine). Looked OK, but as it sat in
the shed and started to rust, the web of cracks became obvious. No way to use
it as an engine, it would fail again pretty fast.

Only worth it's scrap value.

Nice to hear it's still working well!

I have discovered another cause of poor cooling after switching to R134a -- a
bad monovalve. Drove my mother's TE to work yesterday to pick up a used TV
antenna (which didn't arrive as it turned out, long story), and found that just
like my second 300D, it blows hot air forever with the AC compressor not
running. It also fails to heat well, same cause I suspect. A monovalve that
doesn't close will add enough heat at idle to make the car too warm -- just as
if there wasn't enough cooling capacity, since there isn't with added heat!

That is amazing flying.

The most exciting landing I've personally experienced was flying into
Saba in the Caribbean. The runway is ~ 1300' long and the right
wingtip came within 15' of the rock face when the plane came in for a
landing. They warn you when boarding that squeamish fliers should sit
on the left.

[MBZ] 240D Starter Problems

2009-06-02 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Hi All:

The son's 240D has been experiencing minor difficulty starting for a while
(grinding a bit, then starting), culminating in a no start condition. I
checked the battery, it is showing 12.5 volts and headlights come on bright.
I tried jumping from the wife's TD, showing 13.75 volts at the 240D battery
(with TD engine running). No go. I tried tapping the solenoid with a
mallet (maybe not hard enough). Still no joy. It is cranking very slowly
and grinding.

My hypothesis is a sticking solenoid.

I have the 123 manual CDs, but don't find any module on RR the starter. I
see Rusty has a rebuilt Bosch for a good price. I have searched the
archives and found a few messages saying this is a pretty doable repair.

Am I overlooking something in the manual?

Any tips or tricks?

TIA

You've only made half of the four tests that a voltmeter
should be used for. Also measure the voltage between the
positive post (not the clamp) of the battery and the post
of the starter while cranking. Measure the voltage between
the negative post of the battery and the case of the starter
(or the engine block) while cranking. Both should be negligible.
If there is significant voltage on either, you have a cabling
problem.

Bought a Gwagen with an additional blown 240D engine , big end failure
at #1
which threw a rod and punched a hole in block . Was wondering if the
block

is repairable? Main bearing foundations not affected.

I suppose it depends on just where it punched through, and how
structural that area is. I welded the plug back in the aluminum
crankcase of my garden tiller. Still working, but it only gets
light duty.

But a busted block without a usable crank to go with it is
likely just a boat anchor.

Am I overlooking something in the manual?

Any tips or tricks?

One more thing. Get the replacement starter from Rusty. I went through four
... yes FOUR ... rebuilt from the local McParts [all returned / replaced
at no cost, except for the final one, for which I was given a refund]. The
one from Rusty has worked fine for well over a year. ... Turned out that
Rusty's price for a Bosch was actually less than the
rebuilt-in-a-third-world-country ones that I tried first.

Re: [MBZ] 240D Starter Problems

2009-06-02 Thread Peter Frederick
You should check the current draw on the starter as well -- when
those direct drive starters get old, the resistance in the winding
goes up, they turn slow, and draw a colossal amount of current (2000A).

A grinding noise could be two things -- a bad starter over-run clutch
(those usually screech, though) or a bad ring gear -- either will
prevent starting. Could also be bad bushings in the starter that are
allowing the armature to contact the stationary coils, this will make
an amazing amount of noise and slow rotation.

Check the cables, too, but I would suspect a bad starter.

A tired Benz diesel starter needs a new armature, not just new
brushes and a turned commutator, which is all the rebuilt ones
usually get. Bad windings is the real problem.

Bosch rebuilds have a new armature.

2009-06-02 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Replace the starter? I'll just have to do it again in another 30 years!
:-).

Hope teeth are not ground out of flywheel Fingers crossed!

Also measure the voltage between the positive post (not the clamp) of the
battery and the post of the starter while cranking. Measure the voltage
between the negative post of the battery and the case of the starter (or the
engine block) while cranking. Both should be negligible.
If there is significant voltage on either, you have a cabling problem.
Good testing protocol...I'll do this before I order a new one.

Thanks to all for the tips!
