When some idiot in a car tries to lecture me about cycling technique
while riding with proper lane placement I respond with "READ EFFECTIVE
CYCLING." Since it sounds like you were riding legally in the safest
manner possible, if you or your lawyer need any "legal ammunition" you
might want to give the author of said book a call: http://www.johnforester.com/

Sorry to hear about your accident, and I hope you at least get a nice
new bike. Although I'm go for lugged steel over carbon myself!

noted the time and place, was thinking about giving them a ring, I
am definitely on that tomorrow. I did not see any other vans, so
finding who that was should be pretty easy. We have a new, fairly
stringent bike law here in SC, the deputy was not aware of it but
said I could go to the judge to get more charges on the guy.
Anyway, there is a lawyer who works with the local cycling

The bike seems to have pretty much survived, though I need to check

Yikes! Your doors are full of water to the point that they're spilling
over the inside threshold? That's a couple of inches, at least. There
is a row of holes along the bottom crease where all the water that gets
down by the window is supposed to go. You've got enough mud in there
by now that I'd suggest taking off the inside panel and vacuuming and
cleaning it out thoroughly.

BMW is nutty about getting the proper ZDDP levels in their motorcycles;
such that they still specify SG grade oils (and nothing higher) since SG
grade still has an 'acceptable' level of Zinc. later grades than SG have
less ZDDP, as it contributed to pollution.
any good FLAPS should be able to order SG grade oil like Castrol if

A flatish tank has more surface area for the volume than a round tank.
That's why the contents heat up faster.

Well, to start with they shouldn't be clogged with a lot of shi, er,

Re: [MBZ] our 190D starts to burn oil

I'd never use 5w30 unless the HTHS was more than 3.5-3.6 !

Subject: Re: [MBZ] our 190D starts to burn oil

I realize oil brands and weights tend to be a quasi-religious issue,
with most people (myself included) having strong convictions with little
evidence.

Some of the reasons I use the thinner oil:
1) The 5w40 will start quicker, and build oil pressure quicker,
especially in cold weather
2) It remains just as thick at operating temp and above
3) M1 Turbo Diesel Truck is only widely available in this weight, and
it's intended for diesels and rated to handle more diesel soot than
regular M1
4) It's usually about the same price
5) It's MB approved for all temps (is 10w40 approved at all in the
current specs?)
6) And last but not least- it's what Marshall used

I wouldn't hesitate to use another weight of M1 if I couldn't get 5w40,
but 5w30 would be my second choice. I think that the thicker oil will
accelerate engine wear, especially in cold climates and offer no
advantages in warm climates, except for possibly reduced oil consumption
in a worn or leaky engine. My 190DT doesn't burn or leak significant
amounts of oil...

The original full up takeoff weight in 1969 was about 750,000, so

Re: [MBZ] styrofoam "747"

2009-06-08 Thread Peter Frederick
Talking about towing aircraft, an aquaintance of mine was in the
"Confederate Airforce" some years back. For some reason, a flight of
the B-25 Mitchell got canceled and the plane was sitting in a hanger
too long and needed to be moved -- it was fully gassed up and they
didn't want to get flats on the tires.

The tow motor wasn't working, and the plane really needed to be
moved, and a guy with a "big" pickup volunteered to try. Mind you,
we are talking at least 150,000 lbs stitting on two very large tires
that are both stiff and getting a flat spot in them, going to take
some muscle to get it rolling.

He was told to back up the to tow hook, chain up, ease out the slack,
and pull gently until the tires rolled off the flat. Naturally,
being a true red-neck of the bony headed sort, instead of a steady
pull he floored it with the chains slack.

"BANG" -- ripped the bumper and hitch clean off the truck, didn't
even move the B-25 for some reason

There is a reason those tow motors look like they are carved out of a
cast iron ingot -- they essentially are, usually weigh 20,000 lbs and
up.

This problem really was only a problem with the indirect injected trucks,
as the cylinder pressures were much higher. This is also a problem with
bigger OTR trucks, but those owners never complain, they just follow the
maintenance schedules. You could get this problem out of the IDI chevies
too, but it was incredibly uncommon.

2009-06-08 Thread archer
While trying to figure out which Greenwood you were referring to, found that
"Greenwood" seems to be one of the most popular names for towns in the U.S.
For example, there are 3 Greenwoods in Indiana, 4 in Kentucky, 4 in
Washington, 4 in Texas, 4 in Louisiana, 4 in Alabama, 4 in Georgia, 4 in
Virginia, 3 in West Virginia, 4 in Pennsylvania, 3 in Maryland, "8" in
Tennessee!, usually more than one in the other states, and very many
Greenwood Villages, Springs, Places, Shores, Parks, Manors, Lakes,
Junctions, etc., etc.

Strange.

As long as the engine stays together (probably not real long!) a 747
will fly on one only (preferably an inner one). Don't know if you
could land it that way, sure would be hairy due to lack of power, but
it WILL fly.

It's 4wd with an actual locking center diff (not FWD or AWD).

I always wanted once since I was a kid and saw one in the junkyard. It
was my car but my wife didn't like it so I traded it with my dad for his
Volvo 244 Turbo. He lives in the northern Idaho mountains and uses it to
commute in the winter when there's 2 feet of snow in the road. It drives
like a sports car, but can easily handle 2 feet of snow! I love that
thing, it's straight out of an 80s sci-fi movie with more useless
gadgets than you could possibly imagine! Some of them even work! I
removed the worn out air suspension and replaced it with coils from a
station wagon- so now it has tons of ground clearance, but still a
fairly stiff and body-roll free ride.

Believe it or not, it's 100% rust free and even the paint and interior
are perfect. I bought it from a college student for $300 because it had
a bad clutch cable, and he got in a fender bender and his parents said
he wasn't allowed to drive anymore. The hood and fender were dented, but
my dad found an exact paint match in the junkyard, so it's like new now.

Your dad drives a 22 year old doorstop? Oh yeah, you're in California so it's

Well...maybe not another project but I could use the engine and
tranny for another vehicle that I have. I'll take a look at it.

Jacksonville Craigslist has an SDL with a bad engine for $550, and a few
listings above is an SDL engine and transmission but with no price
'parting

out' car. I think some of the info is probably not correct [was there a
1989 SDL?], but for the mechanically inclined it might be worth a look.

Manfred - you need another project right now, don't you? [if you are
interested just don't tell your wife where I live].

[MBZ] acceleration alley at daytona 500 experience

2009-06-08 Thread Gary Hurst
yeah, i'm just a sucker for tourist traps myself. i drove the simulator at
daytona once and did about 57 seconds a lap. i wanted to give the girl at
the counter 50 bucks and tell her i'd like to go 10 more times in a row, but
ran away instead. a day later, i regret not doing it.

probably better i didn't as i found my first run so exciting i had some
minor chest pains.

i normally hate to tout something this mainstream, but i can't help it in
this case

[MBZ] Things I did this weekend

2009-06-08 Thread winmutt
W123 TD swaybar in a D - Very nice improvment in handling. PITA but I
would recommend to anyone with a TD in a junkyard near by.

Gwagen clutch/flywheel - Much better over the 200D flywheel I had in
there. Doesn't rev as fast and third gear turbo lag is way worse but
overall I am happy. Getting up on the ramps is way easier now, the extra
2cm on the clutch and heavier fly wheel makes it a smooth operation now.

Rear diff - No more humming!

I also washed the Motoroam and that was a night and day difference.
Can't wait to get inside tha puppy and put a full days work into it.

Re: [MBZ] My E320 Gas Smell

2009-06-08 Thread Rich Thomas
I had a gas can in my garage I filled up in the winter. A couple of
weeks ago I smell gas and see the can spewing gas out the vent. Moved
it outside (in the sun) and the spewing increased!

Gasoline has a high coefficient of expansion. Gas in ground tanks is
cool. Gas sitting in car gets warm pretty quick, gas expands, gas spews.

We never filled airplane tanks all the way up in the summer -- the fuel
in the truck sorta stayed cooler than the plane tanks (takes a lot of
heat transfer to cool/heat the fuel, in the big truck tank it goes
through night/day cycles and changes slowly, but in the plane tank it
can warm up real quick and make a mess on the wings).

Heat transfer (conduction) goes at the 4th power of the temp difference
over a distance, if you have a smaller path for heat to transfer (like
in a flattish fuel tank) it can go very quickly, in a big round tank
like a truck or dump it goes slowly. (that does not account for
convection, i.e. swirling around, just conduction which is more
applicable in a big stable tank -- in a small tank it swishes around and
warms up quickly from the tank sides).

Physics are fun.

Re: [MBZ] RUNS GREAT,MADE IN GERMANY!!!!

Ed,

That's my old stomping grounds - I know exactly where you're describing.

I'm not really in the market right now - just curious. Black with gold trim is
a bit too "pimped" for me. I like bone stock, so unless there was something
really spectacular about it, I doubt I would be interested.

Thanks,

Dan

Andrew,

Greenwood, Indiana.

Dan,

It's on Smith Valley Road just West of 37. . Ok, technically just West
of Railroad Rd, or whatever it's called where it meets Smith Valley. It's
been repainted black, and the trim has been electroplated gold. Has both the
soft and hard tops, and my Father and youngest Brother were looking at it,
but I don't think my Dad is really interested in it. He wants an old 107
with the round headlights.

My Brother did drive it, and said it ran out strong. There is some light
amount of rust on the trunk deck lid where the repaint has chipped away.
Don't know if the original color was black or not. Dad looked at it pretty
good and said he thought it was straight so if it had been in an accident
probably light fender bender.

Owner is asking $4000 for it. Didn't have the opportunity to pop hood and
verify AMG fender tag to know that it isn't badge engineered because the guy
was at work when I was down there visiting, and my Brother wouldn't know
what to look for. Let me know if you look at/buy it.

Later,

EdB

Hey, Ed! Where in Greenwood? WHat was it listed in, CL?

Just curious, since the rest of the family lives there and I get down there
often. Might check it out for grins...

That whole movie was a plot assembled around product placements. Nearly every
gadget and vehicle had the name and/or badging figuring prominently in every
shot they were used in.

Didn't some airports use Unimogs to move planes around at one time ?
I seem

to remember a picture of one hooked up to a 747 once.

Yeah, there were airport tugs. The Mogs in question have
torque converters, and are easily identified by virtue of
the oil cooler that pokes out the front of the grille.
Put it in gear, let out the clutch, and floor it. Wait
to see what develops. I think they're rated to 20 tons.

Re: [MBZ] fake-o

2009-06-08 Thread Barry Stark
Right, but really raised my eyebrows is the claim that they added 4.3 tons
of ballast. Now any thinking person would think that much weight would
totally bottom out the suspension in the car but if you look there is still
plenty of room in the fender wells. Also, though I know that Michelins are
good tires and all, even with 60-70 PSI of air pressure, let's add it up a
bit. 4.3 short tons =8600lbs + 5000 for the car...add it all up you get
13,600...now divide by 4 gives us 3,400 lbs of load per tire. Wouldn't you
think that even at that air pressure with that weight it may tend to flatten
the tires just a little bit? I bet the only sandbag that had any sand in it
was the one he put in the car. The rest...likely more Styrofoam pellets.

Re: [MBZ] R&R Front wiper motor in a W123 -anyone BTDT?

2009-06-08 Thread andrew strasfogel
Craig, this is great info - thanks!!

So what happens if I UNplug the wiper motor and try to engage the wipers?
My predictions are as follows:

1) if wiper motor is at fault: I will be able to activate the washer fluid
pump but obviously there will be no wiper action. Fuse will NOT blow.

2) if there is a fault in the combination switch: Fuse will flow as soon as
I engage any setting involving the wipers (speeds 1-3 + w/s washer pump
mode)

3) if there is a fault in the intermittent wiper relay: Same as 2) above.

4) Any other possibilities?

Please provide comments or corrections to this diagnosis, which is probably
overly simplistic.
