This will pass current and not burn something up in the process?

Yes, that's the point. A 10W lamp will be less than 1A of
current, hard to burn up any automotive type wiring with
only one amp. Where else are you going to find a 10W power
resistor with built-in visual indication as cheap?

It's a very old technique. Predates cars, most likely.

On a W123, the dash lights do not come on when you have the right or left
standing lights on.

I think it's a single filament, both front and rear, on the side that has
the standing lights lit.

Re: [MBZ] OK, experts, what do I try next?

Jim: Why do you suspect light fixtures above unplugged HCS wiring?

'cause I've seen it before!

Fuse #3 pops when the headlight switch is in the first stop left (3)
*or*right (1) of the off position (0). But that makes sense, since
both impact the right tail light.

Bonus. That even tells you which side to look at, and eliminates
the other parking-type lights like the license plate. Pull both light
fixtures out and give 'em a good look, including the bulbs themselves.

Do tail light wires go that way [trunk hinge] in a sedan?

No, they don't. That won't be the problem.

and use the old ones [fuses] when troubleshooting this problem.

The usual way to chase this is to clip a light bulb into
the circuit instead of a fuse. I use a Chevy dome lamp that
has two wire 'handles' coming out the ends, alligator clips
hook to it right handily.

No I don't think a charger will keep the battery as warm but I think it'll do a
plenty good job at -10F...
With M1 5w40 my 240D will start pretty reliably at -10F with no assistance.
With 15w40 and the block heater it'll start easy at -10F...

At -10F you'll only need the block heater. At -40F you'd want "the Fairbanks

I tend to group malware of any form and the distribution of such all

From the perspective of the result, it really doesn't matter if legit

Probably you are right about not updated, but then there are all the
things that some "updates" break, and that leaves most of us jaded and
reluctant to install updates, particularly on the winders platform. I
have advocated on Windows to not install a SP until the next SP is
out. By then , the patches may be patched enough to not cause big
problems.

It is scary out there. Using a Non-M$ platform is one defense, but
that defense is not infallible as many have claimed. Using a non-M$

When I said they rooted the box, I was referring to gaining access to
the root account, analogous to the admin account on windows, which is
usually done through an escalation of privileges that is brought
around by a buffer overflow or some other vulnerability in a piece of
software that is running on the machine. My apologies for not
clarifying that in the original message.

It would be like someone doing the reboot to safe-mode admin account
workaround on XP home edition, creating a new administrator account,
logging into that account, and then enabling remote desktop and
sharing a folder on your computer that was filled with malware. In
that case, there was no root kit installed, no malware installed, and
yet there still was a security breach.

It's not technically a virus, or malware that got them in, it was a
clever exploitation of a vulnerability, that may or may not have been
there because of a lack of upkeep and maintenance.

I agree, every system is vulnerable in some way, some systems are just
more hardened than others, and Linux/Unix/Mac are currently more
secure, on average, than windows.(at least XP through 3.1, vista made
some small leaps with UAC, and I can't speak for windows 7)

But again, in the end, it comes down to the user/sysadmin keeping the
system up to date and patched.

For the record I am a Linux user, and therefore am slightly biased,
but I try to keep my opinions out of matters and deal with the facts.

I hope nothing I've said comes across as arrogant or leaves the wrong
impression.

The headlight wash/wipe function requires the parking lights to be on, not
the headlights.

BTW, current MB design activates the headlight washer (no more wipers)
every tenth use of the windshield washer. That way, the washer reservoir is not
emptied so quickly.

Why do you need a battery warmer?  Is it not an option to plug in the
block heater?  Mobil 1, valve adjustment, fully functioning glow system
aren't going to cut it?

Didn't Curt or somebody figure a way to add a second battery, located in
trunk, to power the block heater via an inverter, which provided about
30 minutes of juice which was enough to warm the engine so that the
original battery could then start the car?  I like that solution better.
I think that marine stores carry a nice pre-made switch so you can
isolate the 'house' battery (then used to power the block heater) but
once the car is started add it back to the car's charging circuit to
charge it up for the next night.  Add a timer to the system to turn on
the block heater and you won't even have to worry about going out to
turn on the heater in the a.m. - the car will be nicely warmed up and
waiting for you to start it.

Very respectfully,

Pete's right though a charger should keep the battery pretty warm regardless.

If
your going to be saved to 110v, why not use a trickle charger? That
along with synthetic oil should start any proper diesel down to -10?.

Re: [MBZ] OT mimosa tree

2009-09-14 Thread Rich Thomas
And if you have a car anywhere nearby (like within a quarter mile) the
little pink flowers will glom onto it like an oyster on a rock and stain
the paint.

Little green inch worms love them, and will drop down from the tree on
invisible threads that you will get all over you and annoy yourself to
no end.

They drop their seed pods all over, then come up in your yard
everywhere, or somewhere else and squeeze out native species.

They are invasive weed trees, but do make a nice place to sit on a
summer day, if the worms don't bother you. My grandmother (in KY) had a
big one in her yard when they first became widely known, someone gave it
to her and it grew like a virus in a preschool. And then hundreds of
others sprung up all over...

Beware that many people consider them weed trees since they grow so fast

Are there hidden pains, secret tricks, problems etc. regarding

having a mimosa tree?

Put them in the ground, fertilize them if you want, and watch them grow!
When I bought my house in Jan of 2005 I wanted some shade in the backyard
as quickly as I could get it. I planted two and they are huge now. One of
them took off the second summer, and the other only really took off this
summer. I don't have any complaints. :)

G'luck!

This is World's Best cat litter. It composts very quickly with all the
aforementioned ingredients inside a black plastic compost bin under the hot
DC September sun.

Sounds almost poetic, doesn't it?

Re: [MBZ] Rear door regulator (?) Stuck.

2009-09-14 Thread Rich Thomas
You generally unscrew the armrest, the latch handle bits (under a little
plastic insert that will pry off), and the chrome thing at the latch,
then pull the bottom and sides of the panel off (those little snap
things are in there), then lift the panel straight up as there are tabs
at the top that fit over the door/window structure, and maybe another
tab or two in there somewhere. Then the plastic peels off. Window
switches generally pop out or there might be a screw there somewhere, I
can't remember. Disconnect the connector.

I think it's called a check strap, I have not replaced one but have to
some day. You might need a couple extra joints in your arm to reach up
in there.

Also a good time to lube up the window tracks and slides, clean it all
well first. I use white lithium grease but there is probably some magic
Benz potion for them.

Re: [MBZ] OK, experts, what do I try next?

2009-09-14 Thread Wonko the Sane
Do dash lights come on when the switch is in position 3?

According to the owner's manual, position 3 is standing limps, right.
Position 1 gives that plus license plate lamps and instrument panel lamps
(also on fuse #3).

If the rear lights are the only thing getting power from fuse #3 when the
switch is in position 3, that might narrow things down quite a bit.

Fuse #3 pops when the headlight switch is in the first stop left (3)
*or*right (1) of the off position (0). But that makes sense, since both
impact the right tail light.

But there is good news. Fog lights in the car have never worked. Noticed

Re: [MBZ] Linux webserver botnet pushes malware

2009-09-14 Thread Walt Zarnoch
I didn't try to worm-out of it, I was just correcting the article's
mistake in saying that the webserver that was installed was mallware.
It was just the means of putting the malware on the net.

I hope nothing I've said comes across as arrogant or leaves the wrong
impression.

Re: [MBZ] brake job nightmare

2009-09-14 Thread Curt Raymond
The remans on my 240D were around $80 each at Autozone and they came in the
next day which was a Sunday so I could be on the road Monday morning...

One leaked, I got them to order another. I swapped the new one in and brought
back the failed one and they credited me... I can't complain.

$5 difference, I'll buy the better item. $150 difference on a $400 car, I'll
buy the cheap one.

No that's not it at all.  In this case the choice of buying "new"

Yeah I miss the local "Imported Auto Parts" that we had in town 15 years

Picked up another one today, this one is a 84 5 speed manny.  Drove it
back home from the OKC area today, should have stopped by and saw OK Don
but didnt have time.  Boy there is sure a difference between the manny
and auto 190D.  For starters, going 75 on the highway results in I would
say about 2800rpm engine speed, in the auto its probably 3300rpm or so.
Im going to have to get rid of some of these things.

I've been driving around for a couple of months with the instrument cluster
pulled out a bit (maybe 1/2" away from being fully seated) -- need to to
pull it completely out out and repair the odometer. It was such a pain to
remove when I installed new dash lights that I didn't push it back all the
way.

It is possible that the wire that supplies power to the dash lights got
forced into a more direct route (stretched) and insulation has worn off of
the wire due to vibration, causing a short. That will be the first thing I
check once I pull the cluster completely out.

2009-09-14 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Don: I doubt that; my test of the SW position that causes f3 to blow
will help narrow that down.

Jim: Why do you suspect light fixtures above unplugged HCS wiring? I
don't know of any light fixture failures resulting in a short to ground,
but a loose connector floating around the front of the car with a hot
pin inside could result in such a short, it seems to me.

New thought: If f3 blows in position 1 of the headlight SW, is it
possible that failed wiring at the trunk hinge flex point could make
that short? Do tail light wires go that way in a sedan? I think not,
but I'm throwing that out there for you.

Beware that many people consider them weed trees since they grow so fast

Are there hidden pains, secret tricks, problems etc. regarding

Put them in the ground, fertilize them if you want, and watch them grow!
When I bought my house in Jan of 2005 I wanted some shade in the

The usual MB block heater is about 400W, and an hour will make a marked
difference. That's .4 kwH, or 3.3 AH at 120 V. At 12 V, the same power
would be 33 AH at 100% efficiency (unlikely), which is well within the
reach of the usual 75-100 AH deep-cycle battery.
(The lower you discharge it the more lifespan you take from it.) Put the
inverter where its waste heat will do some good, such as near the
starting battery?

The real problem is putting _back_ that energy in a driving cycle, You
were sucking out 35A or more for an hour, you'll only be putting back at
maybe 10A or so, so a four-hour drive might do it. A bit iffy for most
commutes, to say the least. (Plus you've got to be recharging the main
battery too, and run headlights and fan motors if this is a typical
winter drive. Might need to beef up the alternator system.)

So if you've got to get tethered to the wall at some point in the cycle
why not do away with all the intermediates and plug in directly?
You can even try for elaborateness, such as my semi-successful attempts
with the Frankenheap.

Curt's problem was a lack of an outlet where he had to put the car. The
auxiliary battery was carried inside nightly for recharging. Most of us
would get rather tired of that!
He did, enough to buy a house!

My point exactly. Every OS is vulnerable in some way. (Many ways)
You tried to worm out by saying the malware was "not a virus." THen
you went on to say they probably installed a rootkit. It is
malware, and malware is malware, whether some piece of it is "legit"

are fools. Whether the malware is technically a "virus" or not is immaterial.

Linux still has that fatal flaw called the user, if the user doesn't
update when a bug is found and patched, then the system stays
vulnerable.

In all, what probably happened was a service on the servers was
vulnerable in some way, the attacker rooted the box, and then
installed nginx(which is not a virus, it's a legit web server) on a
non-standard port, and Bob's your uncle, you got a place to serve
whatever ya want.

Just my 2 cents.

2009-09-14 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310

F3 provides power to the HCS (headlight cleaning system) at pin 2 of K2
(relay located in the relay tray near the fuse box, see attached pdf)
AND it provides hot power to the HCS washer motors, so IF these are
disconnected there is the potential for a hot short (i.e. water getting
into the connector providing a path to ground, or loose wiring getting
pinched or rubbed until a short occurs). So I'd start by measuring
resistance to ground at pint 2 of the K2 socket; that will tell you if
the HCS is causing your f3 to blow.

According to the fuse panel lid, #3 is in charge of parking / tail light
right, headlamp cleaning unit, illumination: license plate, instrument,
control elements [not sure that last one means].

I have tried the following -- always resulting in a blown fuse when I
turn the headlights.

- unplug right rear bulb cluster
- remove both license plate bulbs
- unplug instrument cluster

Each time, the fuse still blows.

I can't find any way to unplug the headlight wipers, other than to cut
what I think are the wires (NOT going to go there, even though the
wipers don't work).

Any suggestions? I have awakened about 3 AM several times over the past
few weeks trying to troubleshoot this. I am (was) an electronics
technician, so I should be able to track down a short -- but can't seem
to. I am pretty close to disconnecting ground from the battery and using
an ohmmeter to see if something that should be "hot" is actually ground,
but I suspect unexpected ground would feed back through the entire
wiring harness.

2009-09-14 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
It sounds to me like a hot wire is shorted to ground somewhere. Any
recent work done? Look there for a pinched wire. I think that
Illumination: ...control elements is for other driver control lighting
like the ACC panel, shifter light, lights in the dash for the vents,
etc. etc.

First check I'd recommend is measuring resistance to ground with fuse #3
removed at the "feed" side of the fuse terminal (as opposed to the hot
side that is connected to the battery). If you get zero ohms with the
headlights turned on, then you know you have a hot short. Work
downstream from there with your ohm meter.

As already discussed the headlamp cleaning units are probably not the
cause because you also need the signal from the window washer circuit
ala the combination switch in the stock; really need the schematic to
see where that hot signal goes prior to reaching the stock or the
headlamp cleaning units. I happen to have that schematic on my HD, let
me take a look...

They're all supposed to have them. (The mannys.)
They tend to buck without them.

Re: [MBZ] Linux webserver botnet pushes malware

2009-09-14 Thread Walt Zarnoch
The "infected" machines/vm's were probably behind on software updates.
