you don't buy anything from them directly. they supply a lot of food
companies. If you think you can hurt them, then don't eat pizza, or
any factory meatballs (subway etc) They make precooked meats. I
doubt they will notice the dent.

Fish, hunt, shoot, fill your freezer, and you won't be supporting
them. Send your dues in to the NRA and the Ikes.

Re: [MBZ] 240D Ball Joints Questions

2009-10-01 Thread Richard Hattaway
I don't heat the spindle directly. Only the BJ. That's why I like to use the
BT wrench. It's pretty pinpoint about what gets hot. I also don't try to melt
anything, just add some heat to the BJ. Then it comes out easier.

There are situations where the manual's version of the operation will not work.
You just cannot beat the thing out, and risk destroying the (very brittle)
cast iron spindle if you get too energetic.

I have had lower BJ's that came out with a plain ball pien hammer, hit with the
round part in the very center of the BJ. And I have had BJ's that required the
blue tipped wrench. But in no case have I heated the cast iron to any point
that would change its character.

I think on my next set ( which I hope never happens (c: ) I will (wearing
glasses) use a ball pien hammer with the round part on the BJ, and in the other
hand hit the ball pein flat surface with a *large* hammer. Maybe fold in the
sides of the BJ a bit before hitting it with the hammer/socket combo. I often
wonder if that's why the one set came out so easy with the BP hammer.

All of this requires proper rigid support of the spindle casting, which is
difficult. Any 'give' and the hammer method simply won't work.

[MBZ] 240D Ball Joints Questions

2009-10-01 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Hi:

My son just brought the '80 240D in to get the front end aligned, and
reported we need ball joints (not entirely a surprise). The quote was $730.
It looks like parts will cost around $200 from Rusty if I DIY.

Looking at the archives, I see some broken links to write-ups how to do
this, and some saying compressor required, some saying not.

I'd like to save the $500. OTOH I'd rather pay the money than deal with the
possibility of flying steel.

Questions:

!- Can someone supply me with live links to the write-ups?
2- What's the definitive answer on compressors? Required for a safe job, or
not?

Do what the book says to remove them -- use a sledge hammer. Heating
the forged spindle carrier risks deforming or weakening it, later
resulting the catastrophic failure. They come right out once you hit
them square.

The Harbor Freight tool works fine so long as you take the dust boot
off and use the hole at the top directly on the ball joint -- there
is no way to get it to fit otherwise. We welded a couple large steel
plates tot he sides to keep it from bending (it's quite soft and
deforms easily). A replacement screw with a fine thread would be a
good idea, too. Once stabilized, it will push the joints right in.

Re: [MBZ] 240D Ball Joints Questions

2009-10-01 Thread Richard Hattaway

Greg,

You do not need a compressor...

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=254137

Start with Dannym's post, those above it are mostly wrong. Read from there
down, you will find a lot of good info re this repair.

Be careful. Lots of forces involved, but certainly not an unsafe job if you
are observant and thoughtful.

I made a press, don't bother. You can have mine if you come to Salisbury to
get it. I wont ship it for less than 40 bux (c: ..

I think the AZ one will do fine. You are using it backwards from it's original
design, but that's OK. More thinking. I also heard the harbor freight one
works well. Mine was made to fit, and used a hydraulic jack as the force
factor. Lots of 3/4 steel plate in mine.

I use a blue tipped wrench and an old socket to remove the old joints. They
come out fast once they see significant heat. Sort out how you are gonna
support the spindle before you try to drive out the joint. One advisor said to
cool the joint?? not sure about that, but I can say w/o reservation to NOT use
something that is fake oem from some american company. Ask Rusty, use the
right stuff. No place to scrimp, as the tolerances are tight. And as someone
else said, make sure they go in straight.

Boostin benz has some notes, they have a link in the link I put in above. All
my stuff is stored, I moved and cant get to it, or I would send you the entire
procedure as done in my shop.

Good luck, it's a DIY but plan for a day.

Richard

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Purge

2009-10-01 Thread LarryT

Hi Max,
Well, that's a scary scenario! Let's hope it isn't true! I was planning
to run some DP thru tonight. In the past I had to use some stuff called
Ferox to clean things. My '91 had only 99k mi on it (avg 7000/yr) and later
speaking to the PO's assistant I learned he drove it daily round trip of
about 4 miles. So it never got warm and that low temp driving created
carbon in the combustion system. I got rid of it with the Ferox and my wife
helped by putting 100 mi +/- daily which was probably the best method.
She's now only driving 32 mi. RT daily and I always put a dose (~4 oz)
Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel with each fill up, but the raves I hear about
Diesel Purge are so phenomenal I wanted to give it a try. Lately, our W124
300D has been idling roughly so I thought that'd be a good starting point -
I've checked most lt the i

Larry,

Plan to spend about 15 or 20 minutes per can.

I found a thread once on mercedesshop forum where a gentleman (who
claimed to rebuild IP's for a living or some such) wrote that Diesel
Purge caused damage because it loosened and flowed all the crap inside
the pump, so the pump elements and the injectors could be damaged when
all this crap with abrasive qualities came through at once. Depending
on what's in your pump, and if it has been feed a diet of low quality
fuel and never been cleaned by diesel purge, this guy said that there
could be deposits inside minding their own business and not bothering
anything, so why mess with them? If your injectors need cleaning, take
them out and clean them by hand instead.

I supposed that using bio-diesel or VO, which has much stronger cleaning
properties than #2 ULSD, may have the same affect?

Anyone else ever heard of such a thing? Anyone have a friend in the IP
rebuild business they could ask and verify? I am skeptical; it seems to
me that the IP was probably super clean at installation in the engine,
and from then on all the fuel was filtered, so where could any abrasive
particles come from to be deposited inside the pump?

I plan to run a can of Diesel Purge in my '91 300D for the 1st time.

Question, the fuel return lines goes into the can as does fuel feed
line. How will I know when the full can of DP has run through the
engine? Doesn't the fuel return line keep refilling the can with excess
fuel?

Also, about how long does it typically take - assuming I'll run the
engine at around 1500rpm?

IMO you were lucky that someone else stepped in. There was too long a list
of flaws, and the head gasket issue was the show stopper.

For the record, compiling a list of the good features on a used car is at
best uninformative, and more often than not misleading. I like to ask
sellers the simple question "What work would I have to get done to your car
to make it PERFECT?"

Re: [MBZ] AAA

2009-10-01 Thread dave walton
I wrote some software to manage the local impound lot a while back.
Tow truck drivers often demand payment in cash before they unhook your
vehicle. No checks, no credit cards. If you don't have the cash, they
take it to the impound lot. A 100 mile tow cost just shy of $600 at
the time with impound fees on top of that. Even when traveling I don't
carry that much cash around. It's great that State Farm will reimburse
you - after the impound lot opens Monday morning.

I have AAA with extended towing.

Required for a safe job, or
not?

You know you have breakdown assistance from MB right - (it follows the car
whether you bought it originally or not for the lifetime of the car)? Also,
your car insurance sells a add-on for towing reimbursement - they may reimburse
for other things as well.    I think it adds about $1.25/yr to my State Farm
policy.

No problem. Either he bought it, in which case you don't have to make a
decision, or he didn't, in which case he's not bidding against you.
Generally speaking, somebody like that does not want to pay much for a project.
He's more in danger of getting his offer refused because you're still a
potential buyer than the other way around.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Purge

2009-10-01 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310

Subject: [MBZ] Diesel Purge

I plan to run a can of Diesel Purge in my '91 300D for the 1st time.

Question, the fuel return lines goes into the can as does fuel feed
line. How will I know when the full can of DP has run through the
engine? Doesn't the fuel return line keep refilling the can with excess
fuel?

Also, about how long does it typically take - assuming I'll run the
engine at around 1500rpm?

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] '95 E300 for $4k, or maybe $3k, or maybe less?

2009-10-01 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
OK, here's the low-down. Finally got to see the car last night. Very
sharp looking car, but I'm on the fence as to making an offer.

Good:
-Evapectomy has been done; ACC functions perfectly and will freeze you
out of the car. Not sure if vacuum pods were done at same time, but
they all seem to work.
-Other than the headliner which is falling down, interior looks really
nice.
-Exterior is very nice, straight, rust-free; metallic silver paint, a
great color. I really only like white and silver in South Carolina heat
and humidity.
-Vacuum pump has been changed. Record of repair at ~150k miles shows
new timing chain at same time, and some other stuff from front of
engine. I suspect vacuum pump failed, dumped into front engine cover
and took out the timing chain. Lucky the motor wasn't destroyed as
well.
-New radiator and condenser and grill after minor collision with trailer
hitch; engine holds temperature nicely.

Bad:
-Owner says it uses coolant, about a cup every two weeks/500 miles and
shop has declared that head-gasket needs replacement. I haven't yet
confirmed, would surprise me if shop wanted to do the work even if not
needed or perhaps combine it with the following
-One or more glow plugs are bad, and isn't this engine (OM606) notorious
for breaking off glow plugs which then require head removal?
-Engine electrical harness is original and owner says shop says it needs
replacement.
-Engine has low power; during wide open throttle acceleration, power
dropped off significantly at about 4k RPM and the car would quit
accelerating and not up shift. I did two runs, and it was a little
better on second run, so maybe it simply is really carboned up (lots of
smoke during both runs) or maybe some of the complex stuff in the intake
is not working correctly.
-Right rear window regulator has failed, window is taped in place to
hold it up.
-Coolant is green stuff.
-Brakes pulsate, probably warped rotors.
-Records are incomplete, seem to be no records of oil changes for
significant periods in first 150k of cars life, but then good records
after that. First indicated oil change is at 8k miles?!? Some service
at dealerships, some at independent garages.
-Rear view mirror adjustment is broken
-Passenger visor vanity mirror cover is broken

Owner is advertising for $3800, told me after test drive that he'd take
$3000 "as is" or $3400 after fixing the rear window.

I'm thinking about offering $2500 after testing coolant for presence of
gasses indicating head gasket failure. I would need to fix brakes, glow
plugs, window regulator, and change coolant immediately.

Other bad news; as I was leaving the owner of the independent MB garage
I use was pulling up to look at the car. So, I'm now bidding against
someone who knows as much if not more than me.

/s/

You know you have breakdown assistance from MB right - (it follows the
car whether you bought it originally or not for the lifetime of the car)?
Also, your car insurance sells a add-on for towing reimbursement - they may
reimburse for other things as well.I think it adds about $1.25/yr to my

As the spouse of a former AAA member, I can say that even with our company
discount it was still something I would have. Because we have fairly late
model cars (2001 & 2005) I'm not terribly worried about breakdowns or
needing a tow, but it's nice to know if we needed them it would be taken
care of. More importantly, my teenager is driving now, and if he would
ever need roadside assistance I have the peace of mind that he's got a AAA
card as well should he need it.
It's nice if you have a motorcycle, too, as if you add the MC coverage
they will pick up and transport your bike if it breaks down.
As for their travel and insurance services, well, in my opinion, they
suck. The driver's license/registration thing is convenient, though. I
don't know if they offer that in every state, however.

Our premiums didn't go up. I used it when a front ball joint got too
wonky for my taste and I decided to have the car towed to the shop vice
drive it in. I think any insurance co. would rather have you get a tow
than risk driving a car that may fail catastrophically. My wife used it
when clutch went out on her Infiniti (hose sprung a leak) and had the
car towed home for me fix. Good call on her part and certainly less
risk for the insco; I would have driven sans clutch like I have many
times in various vehicles in the past. Once my brother was coming to
visit and his truck broke down at the edge of town; I called my
insurance co. and they dispatched a truck for him but he had to pay the
bill.

Kaleb, I think you should look into the insco option if you really just
need to cover your Wife/son for flats and tows home. Press the insco to
put their policy in writing about affect on premiums, and make sure they
can approve a tow home vice an authorized repair facility. I'll bet it
will be lots cheaper than AAA.

I have never really had an occasion to really need AAA, but figured
there is a 1st time for everything. It would make it easier though if
the wife has a flat, or breaks down and needs a tow and I am off working
somewhere. Just let them come out and tow her back home so I dont have
to get the trailer out, or fix her tire or whatever. Speaking of those
tow plans with insurance companies, I have heard that some of them will
actually treat it as a claim and raise your premiums if you use the tow
portion, just like a wreck or something.

than risk driving a car that may fail catastrophically.

[MBZ] OT Poodles

2009-10-01 Thread Rich Thomas

Poodles:

Were originally bred for hunting and retrieving in water. They have web
feet for swimming. The hair cuts actually reflect their hunting roots
-- the poofs on heads and feet hold air in their dense hair (like people
hair, yes it needs to be cut every 6-8 weeks) so that they could swim
better. Some people have taken it to ridiculous extremes, but the dogs
don't seem to care. They are somewhat painful to maintain if the dogs
like getting out in things as you have to brush them out and keep them
from getting matted up. Their head poofs will turn into nappy dreads
pretty quickly.

Poodles are quite smart, some in devious ways, some in more laid-back
ways. They are definitely not frou-frou, and can hold their own quite
well with any other dogs.

I have a black 76 Eldo convertible that the dogs love to ride in (and
people like to see them in it). Maybe in Florida you need a white
Caddy, but then you also have to get a small poodle, not a standard. We
call those little ones "snacks" but they exhibit the same intelligence
as the big ones, just kinda yappy.

Labradoodles need hair cuts too.

--R (who has 3 standard poodles now, a red female Sadie about 40 lb,
with very strong hunting instincts, keeps the 2 80 lb phantom boys
Merlin and Guinness in line, and spanks them when they get out of line,
and who had a black female Molly and a parti male Marley die on us, sadly)

I've only met one standard poodle in my life, and he really impressed me
to the point that my next dog, if I ever get a dog, will probably be a
poodle. His haircut was kind of angular, Japanese-cartoon inspired, and
made him look very muscular. He was extremely smart, calm, and
no-nonsense. Friendly but in a very reserved sort-of way. The only
thing that turned me off was the need for regular haircuts and
associated cost. I guess I could learn to cut poodle hair and save some
$.

I saw that and a lot of his prices seem rather steep. Looked up the MB
tool part numbers in Startek online and the only applicable one to my
fleet (current and future) is the tool for inserting the rear engine
seal. The ball joint press might be a good deal, if it is the real
deal.

It's been a while since making this observation, but at one time I would
walk junk yards looking at cars and I noticed the MB's all seemed to have
been involved in accidents that would likely not be fatal. While other cars
were obviously fatal, MB's seem to protect occupants much better. This
wasn't scientific at all, and I suspect others may have observed the same.
There's exceptions to the rule of course, a few years ago a car came over
the Jersey Barrier and landed on top of a MB killing those inside - but I
guess designing a roof structure for such a bizzare accident wouldn't make
sense.

The flimsy construction of late 1950's and early 1960 american made cars
is terrifying. I think the high speed expensive Italian ones were worse,
but the lack of a substantial frame and the single sheet metal body
simply smashed flat in accidents. I can still close my eyes and see the
film of a 1961 or 1962 Oldsmobile 98 hitting a telephone pole dead center
at 60 mph -- the pole pretty much cut the car in half lengthwise.
Horrible to watch -- the rear end and drive train come out the back from
under the car and the body just keeps crunching up. Finally stops with
the telephone pole where the rear seat should be. And that car weighed
almost 4000 lbs, too.

Surprisingly, the dummy wasn't impaled on the steering column, a very
common fatality in those days.

There was a fatal accident in town a week or so ago when some idiot
running from the police blew a light and T-boned a Cadillac (fairly new,
I think) with a Ford Taurus and killed the driver of the Caddy. I don't
know if it was on the driver's door or passenger side, I didn't see the
pics, but this is similar to the accident I had the my old 300D where I
got hit in the driver's door by a work van (Chevy 3500 series fully
loaded). I walked away, somewhat battered, but the guy in the Caddy
died. There is something wrong here, I think -- he may have not had his
seat belt on, and if not probably died from head trauma, but if he was
belted in he should have survived anyway.

Naturally, the idiot driving 80 miles an hour into an intersection with a
very narrow, 45 degree turn just past the crossroad intersection didn't
get a scratch. He is going to spend significant time in prison, though.

Re: [MBZ] Personality of Labradoodles

2009-10-01 Thread Gary Hurst
y'know, poodles are damn stout dogs. as some of you may recall, my big
german girl used to play hard at the dog park (so much so that i stopped
taking her) and mostly the only dogs that could keep up with her energy and
physicality were your hard breeds and really big powerful dogs.

there were some surprises though in dogs that could "bang and run" with
her. one of them was the odd golden retriever. i was amazed by how those
dogs could wake up from their gentle slumber and really go for a hard long
tussle. the other dog the really would perk up and get physical with the
german was the standard poodle. while the poodles did not really go for the
roll in the dirt tussle, they were most formidable in the stand up catch
wrestling and were really strong runners.

while the poodles just seemed to light up when engaged in strenuous
activity, the owners were simply horrified. they simply started to scream
and took the poodles home, which was a real shame as the poodles were having
an absolutely swell time.

i guess we always tend to think of poodles as these sort of useless "foo
foo" little girl dogs, but i really learned differently from watching them
play with the german. they can be really hardy and capable dogs and i'd be
proud to have one.

i only wish the poodle owner would realize this as well and let their dogs
enjoy their harder dog inclinations.
