No. This would manifest itself obviously on the camshaft, since this isn't
a roller cam, and the tappet must spin on the cam.

And in VERY short order.

I like the Harmony. Wears like iron, looks nice, and has very good

Tire Rack has a survey of All-Season Tires at

Their test summary of the Harmony (at

) says,

A smooth riding tire that does not have the wet traction
to keep up with the best in class

Their test summary of the HydroEdge (at

) says,

A tire that delivers good road handling and wet and dry traction

I wonder how they would rate the Nokian tires (which they don't
carry).

I've had them on our '82 240D/3.0 and our '89 Chevy Beauville Van for
about three years now and they have performed well.

True - however it ran the same with the original injectors as it does with
the new ones - seems unlikely that the new set had the same issue that the

White is unburned fuel, so it's not igniting for some reason.

Just because an injector is new doesn't mean it's working right --
I've had to take one apart to get the crud out that was making it
leak, for instance, and it's always possible something got in the pipes.

If it knocks at low rpm without smoke, and runs fine above about
1500, it's likely a leaking seal ring on the pressure valve holder.
They don't always seal properly even when installed right, it seems.

The other possibility is a dead tappet so a valve isn't opening
properly. Makes the engine run funny.

Diff? 2.65:1
It would make 5th gear useless on Curt's car. I think it's a 2.2.
And first gear from a standing start might not be too much fun either.
I have heard of a 2.5t that was converted to five speed with the 2.65 diff, it's
slow from a standing start, but tolerable.

You wanna sell the IP and injectors from that thing, or are you going to keep

Listers, there have been some changes at BuyMBParts and I feel like
everyone on the lists should know about them. Gary Hurst and I are no
longer business partners. This actually happened back last January, but we
tried to not upset the applecart and we made the change semi transparent.
Last night Gary and I had a major difference of opinion and he decided to
end our relationship sometime during the night by deleting my email
address and removing me and my IM form the web site. This note is just to
let everyone know that I have no affiliation with the web and can not help
you with any issues if you place web orders. However, if you call us to
place orders we still will have the same or better pricing, plus access to
ALL Mercedes parts, not just web items and we can take care of any issues
that arise. Thank you all for your patronage on web and phone orders and I
look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hey gang,

I'm still searching (high and low) for a replacement diff for my '85 190D
2.2l. Cama says almost nobody rebuilds them since the tools are spendy and
the replacement I put in hasn't worked out (its lounder than the one it
replaced). The only options remaining on car-part.com are very expensive
(one was $450).

So I put a post on Peachparts and a guy has one for a good price but its
3.23 ratio as opposed to the 3.42 thats in it... I'm worried about getting
into a Jim Cathey situation where I lose all my low end. The Peachparts
crowd is all about taller gears for better fuel economy but I'm not sure I
believe thats gonna happen...

So, does anybody else know of free boards (like Peachparts or here) where
I can post looking for a new diff? Alternately if anybody spots one in a
boneyard pick it up and I'll reward you for your time.

Re: [MBZ] SD Tires -- Michelin X ???

2009-10-19 Thread Rich Thomas
That looks like what is happening to the X ones on there now. One has
been losing air slowly, thought it was a nail, took it off and close
inspection shows the belt on both edges starting to separate. Maybe
3/16" - 1/4" tread left, but they are dried and cracked too, so probably
fairly old.

I used to like the Michelin X and XZX about 25 years ago. Don't know
much about the tires that would wear that name today, other than they

Michelin have a $70/4 rebate now. Harmony and Hydroedge seem to be
well liked all season tires:

The new X look nothing like the X from the 80s and 90s. (one would
hope there would be some advances in tread design since then)

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ranger brakes

2009-10-19 Thread R A Bennell
You just never know about mileage on vehicles. For example, my mother has a
late model Honda Civic, bought new a
year ago in May. Now has a whopping 3,200 miles on it and they would be almost
all highway miles. She keeps it at
the lake and drives it in the summer only. It is now in the garage out there
until next May. The cottage is about
45 miles from the nearest significant sized town and she goes into town every
couple of weeks to do laundry etc.

Actually when I bought it in December it had 25,000 miles so we've put on
almost half as many miles in 1 year as
the PO put on in 5...

I'd figured the Wagner ceramics are fine but for $16...

You have a 6 year
old Ranger with only 32,000 miles?  I bet it does need front brakes -
that's got to be ALL in town trips.  I think the Wagner pads are fine
they actually put out a lot less brake dust than the factory.
Apparently, you never drive this truck, so its not like you need super
high performance pads.

I would have to talk my wife out of her Expedition, so she could drive

Re: [MBZ] SD Tires -- Michelin X ???

2009-10-19 Thread Rich Thomas
Well, here in the Low Country we won't be getting much snow, and I don't
see driving anywhere where that would be an issue.

The tires on there now are Michelin X one that look like they might be
several years old, though they still have some good tread left. I think
they are just old and rotting and starting to separate. I'll probably
pop over to Costco tomorrow and get a set and be done with it. The
reviews I have seen suggest they are decent tires, we won't be
autocrossing or anything so I'm sure they will be fine. The pic of the
new X looks very similar to what is on there now, so similar tread pattern.

Thanks all for the opinions.

although i've had good luck in most instances with Michelin on several
different vehicles (including Xs and XZXs), the set i put on our 300D
several years back tracked and followed road irregularities so badly
that the tire shop swapped them out for a set of comparable-level
Pirellis. (sorry, i don't have the model number/name of those Michelins
handy right now, but they were a rebranded model specifically labeled
for one of the major tire chain stores.) much to my surprise, those
Pirellis have lasted almost 60K miles so far.

WRT to rolling resistance; there was a sidebar in the AAA magazine
recently that mentioned one of the subscription consumer organizations
(Consumer Reports, IIRC) was the only group actually doing standardized
rolling resistance testing.

in my experience to date, tires that had lower rolling resistance
typically also had poorer traction and/or ride performance. if that's
changed for the better (and only fair testing would show that) and
assuming that those tires are not suffering in any other area of
performance, one has to ask oneself how much one is likely to save in
fuel by using those tires to determine if any additional cost it worth it.
personally, i'm most interested in a tires grip and reliability,
with ride and availability of support following close behind. wear and
rolling resistance fall far behind in the list of primary considerations.

I used to like the Michelin X and XZX about 25 years ago. Don't know
much about the tires that would wear that name today, other than they
don't seem to be available at the Tire Rack. It looks like all the
Michelin have a $70/4 rebate now. Harmony and Hydroedge seem to be well

The new X look nothing like the X from the 80s and 90s. (one would hope

[MBZ] SD Tires -- Michelin X ???

2009-10-19 Thread Rich Thomas
I had a tire going flat slowly, pulled it off to take it to the tire
shop, looks old and cracked and like the tread is starting to separate
at the edge. I thought I saw a nail but digging at it a bit it looks
like a steel belt, YOW. Costco has a Michelin X in 195 70 R14 for $316
for a set, which seems like a good deal, and a $70 rebate (not sure if
that price is the before or after rebate).

Are these decent tires? There are some sort of Michelins on there now.

Subject: [MBZ] Accel pedal

So last night driving the 300SD the accel pedal was sticking/not pushing
down easily. I just checked it, it looks like the little tab that is on
the back of the pedal has detached from the plastic fitting that is on
the metal arm. I can't tell if the little fitting should be part of the
pedal itself or if the tab actually attaches to the fitting somehow. do
I need to order a new one (and the buymbparts web site is not up) or can
I reattach it somehow?

OK, so I got this POS 87 300D in yesterday. Actually, its not a POS,
its a pretty nice car. Anyway, this is the car I had a ways back, when
I got it, running at idle it would fog up the neighborhood and could
just sit there and miss the whole time. It gradually started getting
better while I had it and ended up trading it off. It them ended up
with OK Don, and now I have it back. While OK Don had it, he had the
#14 head off and had it rebuilt. IIRC, when Don was doing this, seems
like he said the compression was OK but I dont remember. He also said
he did not note anything obvious in the bores of the bottom end with the

posting about this, it seemed like everything was OK and could never
find a reason. I am wondering if it might be something in the IP? That
is about the only thing that has not been looked at as far as I know.

You have a 6 year old Ranger with only 32,000 miles? I bet it does need front

they actually put out a lot less brake dust than the factory. Apparently, you

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

WHen my wife saw the two cars her son traded his nice looking E class
for, she about threw a fit. She is certain that both of us are out of
our minds.
She's probably right.
The radio doesn't work in either of the 190s - but it's not an issue
since both cars produce such a variety of sounds when gooing down the
highway, that you have no shortage of entertainment. Given the degree of
out-of-balance of the tires on the auto car, I'm surprised we got home
as well --

However, my son was determined to own a car that he has to row (standard
tranny), so here we are. He's hoping to make one presentable and
reliable car from the two.
