Re: [MBZ] beer question -- yuengling

2009-12-10 Thread Gary Hurst
yeah, i grew up in NYC, where neither Yuengling nor Genessee was welcome.
bars where dominated by the traditional brooklyn beers from mike tyson's old
neighborhood, bushwick. rheingold. shaeffer. piels. i'm sure many of
these names exist today, albeit just as brand names as those breweries have
been gone pretty much forever. one philadelphia brand, schmidt's, also had
a huge presence in the neighborhood bars in new york city. additionally,
they'd also have big national bud and miller products on tap. there usually
wasn't a lot of variety, say 2 or 3 beers on tap, like maybe schmidt's and
bud. mostly just neighborhood losers sat around there after work and they
weren't that picky as to variety.

the place in my neighborhood was the 3 o's (like as in o'malley, o'brien and
o'rourke or something similar). my dad hated that place as he was strictly
anti alchohol so i had be really careful going in and out of that place (wuz
dat you zon going from ze 3 o last night?). i didn't much care for hte
company but they had a satellite and early projection tv and cheap crappy
beer, so it was hard not to look both ways and wander through that door. i
later learned that my dad used to eat regularly at a blarney stone bar in
manhattan (never drank though. they would have like a little corned beef
and cabbage buffet at lunch and it was really good) but this did not in his
eyes bolster the argument for my being allowed to go to the o's.

the funny thing in respect to today's world is that i was about 14 when i
started going to the bar. the issue was not underage drinking as i had a
job, which made me a working man, which qualified me to have some beers. no
one had any issues with my fundamental right to consume alcohol, but rather
with the sorts of people you associated with at local establishments that
served alcohol.

of course, once you got out of the neighborhood bars and into the more fancy
cosmopolitan bars you could get any damn thing you liked and we mostly liked
english beers in those places. then we saw the deer hunter and had to drink
rolling rock for 2 years, but that is a whole different brand of psychosis.

what moved me about the yuengling though was that it still tastes like an
old time beer, which i'm pretty sure few of the other brands out there can
claim. i know that my old brand, ballantine's out of newark, nj, hasn't
tasted like anything in decades.

If you like Ballantine, try Yuengling's Lord Chesterfield Ale; one of my

Re: [MBZ] Kaleb car rebuild, step 1

2009-12-10 Thread LarryT
I have owned my 66 MGB for over 40 years and am continually amazed by its
versatility. When we lived in far western Md where there's always lots of
snow, it had great snow manners as long and the snow wasn't more than 6" or
so deep. We towed a small sailboat (17') behind it also. Now, if I can
finish the restoration and get her back on the road I'll be happy! I'm
installing a new wiring harness and it's "interesting" trying to get
everything in the right place.

I'd never attempt to install a wiring harness in a MB, BTW (MB content)

If nothing else driving 110 miles a day gives me time to think about
things...

When we rented the tow dolly the kid wouldn't rent it to me because Uhaul
thinks a Ranger is too small to tow a 190D (they're probably right) so I
quickly tried to convince the kid we'd take the dolly and put it on an
F150. He wouldn't let that fly so I just as quickly took another direction
and told him I was actually towing an MG B. That (surprisingly) flew just
fine.

Dwight complimented my quick thinking but actually I'd anticipated the
problem. The F150 was my backup plan, the MG B was my backup-backup
plan...

Just get some pliers and pull down the spring fitting under the hood, it
will stretch the spring and you can remove the little bit that holds it
against the bottom, then it all just slides out the top.

Just get some pliers and pull down the spring fitting under the hood, it
will stretch the spring and you can remove the little bit that holds it
against the bottom, then it all just slides out the top.

They vary. I've seen some (115?) where there's a sliding
sheet metal lock. When you see one of those it's kind
of obvious. It slides to one side releasing the whole
plug carrying the star. There are also ones with a rotating
locking collar, you twist 90 degrees and the ears then can
go up through the notches in the grille frame.

[MBZ] windshield replacement

2009-12-10 Thread glenn brown

After years of fighting road debris the windshield on my '84 300D needed to be
replaced as I felt it unsafe for night driving due to the glare from oncoming
headlights and the gritty original windshield. Safelit Auto Glass mobiled to
my house to install a new windshield yesterday but found it rather aggravating
after a number of hours of attempting to fit their aftermarket gasket and my
original metal trim to the replacement windshield. After stopping by EuroSpec
in nearby Fletcher, NC to obatin an OE windshield gasket, they were able to get
my new windshield installed in short order . . . a word to the wise.

Re: [MBZ] windshield replacement

2009-12-10 Thread ernest breakfield

hi Glenn!

we just recently had a new windshield put in our '85 300D as well,
in preparation for holiday travels.

one thing i'd add is that it was a challenge getting the insurance
company (AAA) to pay for the gasket, but we finally did get it approved.
Safelite (the company AAA contracts with to handle glass claims) didn't
consider the gasket part of "the kit" that comes with the windshield so
AAA didn't want to pay for it, in spite of the fact that MBZ and several
glass shops all said that it should be replaced along with the window.
(don't get me started on AAA; that deserves to be kept an entirely
different rant.)
key word seems to be "necessary"; we found a local shop that was
recommended by some reputable local Indies as being familiar with these
cars and that we confirmed to be in the Safelite "network". (Safelite
wants to handle the work themselves, naturally, but AAA covers the work
done by other "approved" shops if you know to ask.) once i managed to
get a Safelite claims agent on a conference call with one of their
approved shops and had them hear from the shop that the gasket is
"necessary for the installation of the windshield" and then get them to
get a AAA claims rep on another conference call to hear that Safelite
had confirmed that the gasket was "necessary", everything went fairly
smoothly.
working with a good shop helps; most of them seem to be pretty
familiar with how to work the claims system of the insurance companies
they work with.

cheers!

Just get some pliers and pull down the spring fitting under the hood,
it will stretch the spring and you can remove the little bit that
holds it against the bottom, then it all just slides out the top.

2009-12-10 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
He may well have said that and I wasn't paying attention because I was a
123 man. Then I drove a 124 diesel and saw the light...

One of the E300 sedans I looked at had a new windshield installed by an
independent fellow; he was repairing the RR door window when I arrived
to look at the car. Seller was happy, the windshield looked great and
the repair the glass man was making to the window looked correct to me
(price for a new regulator assembly looked right in line for a
reasonable profit on the part and he got the door liner off/on with no
problem at all in a rapid manner). I have his card, will probably call
him when it comes time to get the new windshield for my car.

I believe Tyson's neighborhood was Bed Sty, Brownsville and maybe East New
York (where I spent my childhood), but not Bushwick.

Those old-style Brooklyn beers sure were awful. The only old-style New York
beers that were any good were the Ale or Porter that were served at the old
McSorley's! Their sandwiches were great too.

yeah, i grew up in NYC, where neither Yuengling nor Genessee was welcome.
bars where dominated by the traditional brooklyn beers from mike tyson's old
neighborhood, bushwick. rheingold. shaeffer. piels. i'm sure many of
these names exist today, albeit just as brand names as those breweries have
been gone pretty much forever. one philadelphia brand, schmidt's, also had
a huge presence in the neighborhood bars in new york city. additionally,
they'd also have big national bud and miller products on tap. there usually
wasn't a lot of variety, say 2 or 3 beers on tap, like maybe schmidt's and
bud. mostly just neighborhood losers sat around there after work and they
weren't that picky as to variety.

the place in my neighborhood was the 3 o's (like as in o'malley, o'brien and
o'rourke or something similar). my dad hated that place as he was strictly
anti alchohol so i had be really careful going in and out of that place (wuz
dat you zon going from ze 3 o last night?). i didn't much care for hte
company but they had a satellite and early projection tv and cheap crappy
beer, so it was hard not to look both ways and wander through that door. i
later learned that my dad used to eat regularly at a blarney stone bar in
manhattan (never drank though. they would have like a little corned beef
and cabbage buffet at lunch and it was really good) but this did not in his
eyes bolster the argument for my being allowed to go to the o's.

the funny thing in respect to today's world is that i was about 14 when i
started going to the bar. the issue was not underage drinking as i had a
job, which made me a working man, which qualified me to have some beers. no
one had any issues with my fundamental right to consume alcohol, but rather
with the sorts of people you associated with at local establishments that
served alcohol.

of course, once you got out of the neighborhood bars and into the more fancy
cosmopolitan bars you could get any damn thing you liked and we mostly liked
english beers in those places. then we saw the deer hunter and had to drink
rolling rock for 2 years, but that is a whole different brand of psychosis.

what moved me about the yuengling though was that it still tastes like an
old time beer, which i'm pretty sure few of the other brands out there can
claim. i know that my old brand, ballantine's out of newark, nj, hasn't
tasted like anything in decades.

[MBZ] trip to the local dealer

2009-12-10 Thread E M
I was in the area, so stopped off at one of my local dealers today, for a
peek around. I do these little dealer showroom updates for those who don't
have a dealer nearby to see what's new on the floor.

Anyway, I know there's isn't a lot of interest on the list with newer
models, but looking at the build quality, and attention to fit and finish on
the current C, E, and S Class models, it looks like Mercedes has turned the
corner, and are now headed back in the right direction. The previous model
S Class was a huge disappointment to me. My first experience with one, was
running my hand along the inside of a door seal, only to have one of the
spot welds cut my finger, which was protruding through the paint!! Ok, I
thought a one off boo boo, but found the same things on another car! Hard
to believe that car was made by the same company as the W140 series. Yeah
yeah, I know the W140 was a fortune to run, and service properly, but it was
never meant for the masses, or those on a budget.

The new S is amazing! Interior fit and finish, feel and look of materials
are all first class. Not a cheap car, but I'm sure regardless of how much
you spend, if you couldn't find better quality. The way things are put
together, looks every bit as good as on the Maybachs I've seen.

Caught a peek at the new E Class, in full pavement melting AMG kit. It was
pulling away from teh dealer, and sounded every bit the business!! Yummy.

They also had a Hybrid S there, and other than exterior badges, I couldn't
tell it from a standard gasser car. Most Ss here seem to come with the AMG
sport package, so regardless of the engine, they all looks a bit sportier
and more aggressive.

They also had a SLR 733 drop top on the floor. I'm wondering with how much
they've depreciated (if you peek on eBay), and the new SLS arriving soon, if
ppl are just waiting for the new car, which gives similar performance, but
at a lot less money.

They also had an original Gullwing on the floor which has been there awhile,
so maybe it's a company car, or belongs to the guy who owns the dealership.
Either way, great looking car, and must have looked like something from
outer space when it first arrived. Much like the Countach in the 70s.

Well there it is. Off to remove the snow from the old E, and give it a
quick vacuum.

Happy motoring everyone.

2009/12/10 ernest breakfield

hi Glenn!

we just recently had a new windshield put in our '85 300D as well, in
preparation for holiday travels.

one thing i'd add is that it was a challenge getting the insurance
company (AAA) to pay for the gasket, but we finally did get it approved.
Safelite (the company AAA contracts with to handle glass claims) didn't
consider the gasket part of "the kit" that comes with the windshield so AAA
didn't want to pay for it, in spite of the fact that MBZ and several glass
shops all said that it should be replaced along with the window. (don't get
me started on AAA; that deserves to be kept an entirely different rant.)
key word seems to be "necessary"; we found a local shop that was
recommended by some reputable local Indies as being familiar with these cars
and that we confirmed to be in the Safelite "network". (Safelite wants to
handle the work themselves, naturally, but AAA covers the work done by other
"approved" shops if you know to ask.) once i managed to get a Safelite
claims agent on a conference call with one of their approved shops and had
them hear from the shop that the gasket is "necessary for the installation
of the windshield" and then get them to get a AAA claims rep on another
conference call to hear that Safelite had confirmed that the gasket was

Subject: [MBZ] trip to the local dealer

[MBZ] 240D water pump?

2009-12-10 Thread Curt Raymond
Looks like Andrew might be right, the coolant leak on my 240D has accelerated.
Could be I need a water pump.
I'm mentally preparing, I haven't actually looked yet, but is it a big job?
Does the radiator have to come out? What about the fan?

Rusty lists Geba and Laso with the Laso being ~$20 more expensive. Both look to
have metal blades on the pump...
This is my $400 240D, if the Geba isn't total crap I'll probably go for it.

2009-12-10 Thread E M
Hi Dwight,

To be honest, I didn't really look for one, but will next time I'm there.
The only diesels I see around here, in the newer models, are most often in
the large GL SUVs. You do see the odd one in an M Class too. I'm not sure
if either are Bluetech, or just their regular diesels, as I'm not really up
on the latest diesel offerings. The did have a SDL in for servicing,
getting it's snows on though.

A number of older cars here are still dealer serviced, including mine,
('88), right up until I purchased it about a year or so ago.

I'll ask about what models the Bluetech is offered in here (Canada) next
time I'm in, and report back. ;-)

i found mcsorley vastly overrated and most for the tourists.  i believe

2009-12-10 Thread Greg Fiorentino
I used to go to McSorley's in the mid 60's. My brother (later my brother in
law also) attended The Cooper Union nearby. I used to join in their
"McSorley's Day" celebrations. No women were there at the time. They
served only ale and porter, which I suppose were what we now call
"microbrew". It was good stuff. IIRC they were priced at 2 rather large
mugs for whatever reasonable amount The waiters brought them to the tables
by grasping all the mug handles with fingers, and I recall that they must
have had to have enormous hands to carry so many at once. The
ancient-looking urinals were the size of upended bathtubs. The customers
all seemed to be locals and students rather than tourists.

I suppose success can spoil.

Re: [MBZ] beer question -- yuengling

2009-12-10 Thread Gary Hurst
from the wikipedia

Women were not allowed until 1970 when National Organization for
Womenattorneys
Faith Seidenberg and Karen DeCrow took their case to District
Court and won (*Seidenberg v. McSorleys' Old Ale House*). It did so "kicking
and screaming."
[3]

McSorley's serves only two ales, light and dark - $4.50 for two (2009
pricing, each glass is a half pint). The aged artwork, newspaper articles
covering the walls, the sawdust floors, and the Irish waiters and bartenders
help give McSorley's Old Ale House an atmosphere that many consider,
correctly or not, reminiscent of "Olde New York." No piece of memorabilia
has been removed from the walls since 1910. After the New York
Rangerswon the Stanley
Cup in 1994, they took the cup to
McSorley's and drank out of it; the resulting dent caused the NHL to take
the trophy back for several days.[*citation

*]

Famous people have imbibed at McSorley's, including Abraham
Lincoln,
Teddy Roosevelt , Boss
Tweed,
and Woody Guthrie . Literary
figures like Brendan Behan , Paul
Blackburn , LeRoi
Jones,
Gilbert Sorrentino , George
Jean Nathan have been
cited as regulars.

In his 1923 poem "I was sitting in mcsorley's," poet E. E.
Cummingsdescribed
McSorley's as "the ale which never lets you grow old." He also
described it as he describes the bar as “snug and
evil.”[3]

Good point Jim,
Yeah, the corrosion promoting grease helps, but I also randomly cut some
wires, leave others unplugged and mis identify a few just for fun. Plus,
my supply of genuine MGB electrical smoke because all of mine was used up.

That'll make the whole experience "LBC-like" ;-) (for those of you not
familiar with the term LBC - it's Little British Car).

So, how do you ensure that the new harness exhibits all

Got some special corrosion paste for the connectors?

My uncle, who is generally an encyclopedia when it comes to most of the
experiences in his life, has told me about this place. He lived in the
village in the early 60s and has all sorts of bizarre stories from the
perspective of a struggling jazz musician. He has spoke of the "light and
dark, or any mixture of the two" beer frequently. I guess I'll have to take
him there so he can share more of his vivid memory.

I dunno if I can wait for ChowdahQ '10 to get one of those, Curt! :) Nice
bit of Holiday whimsy.

Red and white with a bit of piping on the lower edge perhaps something in a
soft rust tone, to match my color scheme.

Any clever ideas to keep it in place at 80 mph highway speeds? Green florist

Just get some pliers and pull down the spring fitting under the hood,
it will stretch the spring and you can remove the little bit that
holds it against the bottom, then it all just slides out the top.

Hi Rolf,

I dunno if I can wait for ChowdahQ '10 to get one of those, Curt! :) Nice
bit of Holiday whimsy.

Red and white with a bit of piping on the lower edge perhaps something
in a soft rust tone, to match my color scheme.

Any clever ideas to keep it in place at 80 mph highway speeds? Green
florist wire would probably do it.

Re: [MBZ] trip to the local dealer

2009-12-10 Thread LarryT
Thx Ed - appreciate you keeping us aware of new MBs. My only problem, I
feel cars should be judged after they have 100K miles or so on them before
making any judgements about quality.

BTW - until I actually looked, I would have thought MB would have made much
in their brochures and advertisements about their quality. But they seldom
mention it - at least not in the brochures they publish. You'd think they
would shout it from the rooftops - instead, they talk *around* it without
ever saying anything substantive.

I did research for a guy with a S430 suing MB because the paint was falling
off his S430 which gave me the opportunity to learn about this twist.

Subject: [MBZ] trip to the local dealer

I was in the area, so stopped off at one of my local dealers today, for a
peek around. I do these little dealer showroom updates for those who
don't

have a dealer nearby to see what's new on the floor.

Anyway, I know there's isn't a lot of interest on the list with newer
models, but looking at the build quality, and attention to fit and finish
on
the current C, E, and S Class models, it looks like Mercedes has turned
the
corner, and are now headed back in the right direction. The previous
model
S Class was a huge disappointment to me. My first experience with one,
was

running my hand along the inside of a door seal, only to have one of the
spot welds cut my finger, which was protruding through the paint!! Ok, I
thought a one off boo boo, but found the same things on another car! Hard
to believe that car was made by the same company as the W140 series. Yeah
yeah, I know the W140 was a fortune to run, and service properly, but it
was

never meant for the masses, or those on a budget.

It
was

pulling away from teh dealer, and sounded every bit the business!! Yummy.

They also had a Hybrid S there, and other than exterior badges, I couldn't
tell it from a standard gasser car. Most Ss here seem to come with the
AMG

sport package, so regardless of the engine, they all looks a bit sportier
and more aggressive.

They also had a SLR 733 drop top on the floor. I'm wondering with how
much
they've depreciated (if you peek on eBay), and the new SLS arriving soon,
if

ppl are just waiting for the new car, which gives similar performance, but
at a lot less money.

They also had an original Gullwing on the floor which has been there
awhile,
so maybe it's a company car, or belongs to the guy who owns the
dealership.

Either way, great looking car, and must have looked like something from
outer space when it first arrived. Much like the Countach in the 70s.

Well there it is. Off to remove the snow from the old E, and give it a
quick vacuum.

Happy motoring everyone.

from the wikipedia

Literary
figures like Brendan Behan ,
Paul
Blackburn , LeRoi
Jones,
Gilbert Sorrentino , George
Jean Nathan have been
cited as regulars.

In his 1923 poem "I was sitting in mcsorley's," poet E. E.
Cummingsdescribed
McSorley's as "the ale which never lets you grow old." He also
described it as he describes the bar as "snug and
evil."[3]

Re: [MBZ] trip to the local dealer

2009-12-10 Thread E M
Hi Larry,

I still dream about an old 6.3. I know Jay Leno has one with over 300,000
on the clock, and says it still drives tighter than most cars with less than
50,000. I haven't driven my old E300 for awhile, but took it for a spin the
other night, and forgot just how solid it is. It has over 350,000 km on the
clock, and drives WAY tighter than a minivan I just bought which now has
40,000 km on the clock. Ok, I know an apple and orange comparison, but
still, always amazes me how Mercedes managed to build them so solid!

To me, nothing spells confidence in a product, like a good warranty. I
think Mercedes has the quality back, but as you say, it's the long term
performance that really speaks to a products quality. I'd like to see
Mercedes get behind their products a bit more, and show their faith in what
they make, by offering longer warranties. After all, they are asking us to
part with a good chunk of change for a new one!

S430I'm sure Mercedes would prefer to forget about that whole period in
their history. hee hee.

Take care Larry.

Hi Jaime,

He may have been referring to what is popularly known as a "Black and Tan".
Yuengling made one with that name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_and_Tan

I am familiar with it as Guinness over Bass Ale, but there are a number of
variations, as the article states. Certainly worth a trip to treat your uncle
to a few of those!

Cheers, and make mine Guinness!

[MBZ] Bommelmutze fur deine Stern

2009-12-10 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Dwight,

Make them Surely you jest! I was figuring to commission Rolf to enlist
the services of his crochet shop manager.

As to the highway speed, I have had the 300D up to 85mph, ... and it still had
some more... but I never really wanted to push it past that... it's only 83
horses, or so I think, and nearly 35 years old now. I didn't want to tempt
fate.

BTW, I just dropped it off at a local MB mechanic who works out of his house...
to hopefully get his insight and expertise to address the oil consumption
issue. Recommended by a W123 fella I know. good W115 guys are few and far
between these days. My previous guy is down after having a stroke.

Hi Ed,
Excellent post - re the MB warranty -- you'd think that if the Koreans can
warranty their products for 10 years & 100K miles, MB should be able match
it.

Of course, maybe I'm speaking too soon - how long is the MB full warranty?

Hi Larry,

I still dream about an old 6.3. I know Jay Leno has one with over 300,000
on the clock, and says it still drives tighter than most cars with less
than
50,000. I haven't driven my old E300 for awhile, but took it for a spin
the
other night, and forgot just how solid it is. It has over 350,000 km on
the

clock, and drives WAY tighter than a minivan I just bought which now has
40,000 km on the clock.

I'd like to see
Mercedes get behind their products a bit more, and show their faith in
what
they make, by offering longer warranties. After all, they are asking us
to

part with a good chunk of change for a new one!

S430I'm sure Mercedes would prefer to forget about that whole period
in

their history. hee hee.

Take care Larry.

Ed

2009/12/10 LarryT

Thx Ed - appreciate you keeping us aware of new MBs. My only problem, I
feel cars should be judged after they have 100K miles or so on them
before

making any judgements about quality.

BTW - until I actually looked, I would have thought MB would have made
much in their brochures and advertisements about their quality. But
they
seldom mention it - at least not in the brochures they publish. You'd
think

they would shout it from the rooftops - instead, they talk *around* it
without ever saying anything substantive.

I did research for a guy with a S430 suing MB because the paint was
falling

off his S430 which gave me the opportunity to learn about this twist.

Subject: [MBZ] trip to the local dealer

I was in the area, so stopped off at one of my local dealers today, for
a

peek around. I do these little dealer showroom updates for those who
don't
have a dealer nearby to see what's new on the floor.

Anyway, I know there's isn't a lot of interest on the list with newer
models, but looking at the build quality, and attention to fit and
finish

on
the current C, E, and S Class models, it looks like Mercedes has turned
the
corner, and are now headed back in the right direction. The previous
model
S Class was a huge disappointment to me. My first experience with one,
was
running my hand along the inside of a door seal, only to have one of the
spot welds cut my finger, which was protruding through the paint!! Ok,
I
thought a one off boo boo, but found the same things on another car!
Hard
to believe that car was made by the same company as the W140 series.
Yeah

yeah, I know the W140 was a fortune to run, and service properly, but it
was
never meant for the masses, or those on a budget.

The new S is amazing! Interior fit and finish, feel and look of
materials
are all first class. Not a cheap car, but I'm sure regardless of how
much

you spend, if you couldn't find better quality. The way things are put
together, looks every bit as good as on the Maybachs I've seen.

Caught a peek at the new E Class, in full pavement melting AMG kit. It
was
pulling away from teh dealer, and sounded every bit the business!!
Yummy.

They also had a Hybrid S there, and other than exterior badges, I
couldn't

tell it from a standard gasser car. Most Ss here seem to come with the
AMG
sport package, so regardless of the engine, they all looks a bit
sportier

and more aggressive.

They also had a SLR 733 drop top on the floor. I'm wondering with how
much
they've depreciated (if you peek on eBay), and the new SLS arriving
soon,

if
ppl are just waiting for the new car, which gives similar performance,
but

at a lot less money.

[MBZ] Coolant loss

2009-12-10 Thread Curt Raymond
Took a look at my 240D tonight to see if I can figure out where the coolant
loss is occuring. I filled it back up and went for a spin to warm it up. When I
got back the only place I could definitely see coolant is from the overflow
tube. I'd filled it right to the top so a little overflow seems quite normal to
me.

This evening after work when I checked it it was down below the top of the
tubes and on the way to work the cabin heat wouldn't heat until the engine
fully reached operating temp which is a standard sign on this car that the
coolant was low. It needed about 2 quarts to be filled.

I have 2 suspects:
#1 the radiator cap. I replaced it in '04 I think, maybe '03. It looks fine
but...

#2 the little stub hose under the thermostat housing. It looks quite
suspicious. IIRC its a strange size, anybody know it? The one there is really
nasty, years of oil dripping on it haven't done it any favors...

I've had the best luck finding leaks by filling the system, getting the

That was exactly my plan, unfortunately the leak didn't agree with the plan!

I also thought maybe it was leaking when it sat so I waited until after dinner
to have a look thinking it might have left a puddle but it didn't...

I've had the best luck finding leaks by filling the system, getting the
engine up to operating temp, and looking for the stream of water while the
engine is still running.

Re: [MBZ] Coolant loss

2009-12-10 Thread Peter Frederick
Best to use a pressure tester, as many leaks only happen when there
is pressure in the system.

Check the radiator cap, and seat, but likely if you loose coolant
this time of year it's not a poorly sealing cap. Won't get hot
enough to fully pressurize (or boil).

Look in the BOTTOM weep hole on the water pump for coolant. Never
shows up on top unless the shaft is clanking, and it will often only
leak while the engine is running -- static pressure from the fan belt
tends to seal the leak. You can lose a LOT of coolant without
leaving a puddle when you park.

Oil on the hoses or green coolant will make them fail -- soft and
mushy with oil and serious shrinkage from the green coolant.

If you have a plastic radiator tank, suspect the hot side hose
nipple. Replace the rad if it's cracked, they don't repair worth a
d..n.

Re: [MBZ] OT scandisk and defrag

2009-12-10 Thread Walt Zarnoch
I've been using MyDefrag(formerly JKDefrag) for the past few years,
never had any issue with it and it works great. It's free, expandable,
and you can set it to do an optimizing restructuring of the data(moves
frequently used files and startup files around to gain better
performance, instead of just compacting them wherever and causing
unecisary disk seek)
One of my favorite features is the screensaver defrag, you just set it
and forget it, and whenever your screensaver kicks in it starts a
defrag, and once the screensaver stops it pauses and resumes later
when it kicks in again. Once it's completed, it waits another 24 hours
before starting another cycle.

I'd suggest to run the "monthly defrag" option first, and have the
scheduled weekly defrag and the screensaver based daily one to
maintain.

It uses the Microsoft approved functions to defrag so it's just as
safe to run as the MS one.

You can get it at http://www.mydefrag.com

Re: [MBZ] 240D water pump?

2009-12-10 Thread Russ Williams

Curt,

Not too bad of a job. I've done it twice on SWMBO's 240 and once on my 240.
Reason doing hers twice is I used a McParts W/P the first time it lasted
2 years
before it started to puke H2O from the bearing, Stealership and My Indy
didn't

have one in stock and Wifey needed the car the next day.
Both cars now have a Gerba pump in them now 21/2 years on wifeys and 4
years on mine.

You don't have to remove the radiator.
Un-clip the shroud slide it towards the block. 13MM geared box wrench to
remove the 4
bolts that hold the fan to the shaft. Mark the spacer so you put it back
on the right
way. If you reverse it the fan will bolt up but be cock-eyed. 5 10MM??
bolts.

Order a gasket when you order the pump.

Have Fun

Still looking for a Manny Tranny for My 240

Curt Raymond wrote:

Looks like Andrew might be right, the coolant leak on my 240D has accelerated.
Could be I need a water pump.
I'm mentally preparing, I haven't actually looked yet, but is it a big job?
Does the radiator have to come out? What about the fan?

Rusty lists Geba and Laso with the Laso being ~$20 more expensive. Both look to
have metal blades on the pump...
This is my $400 240D, if the Geba isn't total crap I'll probably go for it.

My 2005 CDI has 101k on it. Still drives fantastic! :) The fit and
finish is still excellent, as is the engine. The only thing outside of
normal wear items (brakes, etc) is the thermostat @ 67k (stuck open),
and a few months ago the plastic piece that ratchets the parking brake
broke.

The battery might be getting iffy, which for a normal battery would be
very reasonable. However, the car comes with an AGM battery that is
supposed to last longer. Unfortunately, it is extremely expensive... as
in... ~$250!!!

The only rattle I have is the lid for the storage compartment under the
front of the passenger seat. It only happens occasionally, and is
easily stopped with a quick tap.

Almost easier to list the ones that are _not_ glued in:

Glued:

107, 124, 126, 201, probably all newer.
