We lived in our house for 4 years without a dishwasher. So, when we remodeled the Kitchen, I made sure to do lots of research on Dishwashers. We settled on three different ones - all within $50 of each other. We have a Maytag. I don't know the model number. But, it has the stainless steel interior (I think only one or two of the Maytags have that). It works incredibly well. I was used to our prior dishwasher which required that we basically clean the dishes completely before putting them in the dishwasher. A few weeks ago, I watched my wife put very dirty dishes in the dishwasher. I mean these were really dirty. I said, you have to rinse them first and clean all the stuck on food. She said she had not been doing that since we got it. So, we ran a test and the dishes that she put in came out completely clean. I mean totally clean. The only complaint I have is that sometimes on very rare occasions, a few pieces of silverware will not be completely clean. That only occurs if we have a very large number of dishes and the Silverware is really crammed in and really dirty. It works great and is superquiet. It wasn;t the most expensive Maytag, but I think it was the second most expensive. We also only run it on the regular cycle rather than the heavy duty or pot scrubber or whatever they call it. The bar graph updates at 10x the speed of the digital display. Additionally, the digital display updates faster on 3,5 digit mode than 4.5 digit mode (at least that's what the manual on my fluke 89 says...) The _normal_ mode for the 83/85/87 is 3+ digit mode, not 4+ digits. You have to hold down a button when you turn it on to get the high accuracy (but slow) mode. (It's the backlight button, so my old 83 doesn't have that one.) From way back, a 1/2 digit specification was used when there was a most-significant 0/1 digit, they were calling the Fluke's 0-3 3/4 of a digit last I looked, though it's a lot closer to half. Maybe they renormalized? The bargraph is very different between the 83 and the 87. Normally I prefer the 83's where it's a growing bar from 0-4 representing the entire reading; the 87's is a moving segment that represents only one digit of the reading, but that was perfect for the oxygen sensor which has less than 1V output, so the digit it picked was the most significant varying one. (That is, the 83 throbbed along in the bottom 1/4 of the analog display, the 87 swept across nearly the whole thing. I find it useful to have both meters, and the 83 is my 'daily driver' because it's easier on the batteries and the display digits are fractionally larger. Besides, that's the one I paid retail for, I'm going to get my money's worth out of it!) I'm a bit surprised the analog bargraph display variation isn't a user-selectable mode, maybe it is on the later Series? (Mine are all original series---Mark nothing.) My only complaint is that the test leads have a nasty habit of developing a bad connection up inside the probes... I haven't had that yet. I do find that using the Fluke on the cars is hard on the probes. I've fried the tips off of the probes, and it turns out that the insulation isn't rated for exhaust manifold temperatures! Re: [MBZ] Epic double tranny swap/conversion week
Two thoughts. One a bit late but maybe for next time. They sell an oddball socket doodad for removing wheel locks when one has lost the key socket. Don't know about sizes but I wonder if you could have used something like that to remove the bolt with the damaged head? It is sort of like the grabit things for removing screws with damaged phillips sockets etc. Put it on an impact wrench and out comes the bolt. Second thought is whether you have considered having the flywheel resurfaced? Don't know if a machine shop can do the same for the pressure plate but probably. Most clutch kits won't be guaranteed if you don't resurface the flywheel etc. Sort of like turning brake drums or rotors to get rid of the glazing. Easier to do now than when you have to pull the engine and tranny again to get to it. Randy -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com]on Behalf Of OK Don Sent: Monday, March 15, 2010 7:53 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Epic double tranny swap/conversion week We decided to pull the engine/tranny combo rather than continue to fight it in place. It took a 24oz. hammer to get the 6 point socket onto the buggered bolt. We would not have been able to do that in the car. This engine/car seems to have double the wires and vacuum tube that a 123/61x car does. The worst is the harness for the AC - it comes from the firewall forward between the oil filter canister and the fuel heater, goes down, then turns 90 degrees to run towards the from of the engine between the block and the IP, exits at the front of the IP with a 90 degree turn towards the 9cars) left fender, then splits itno three or four sections. The 3 or 4 sets of wires are in a plastic shealth, that is still flexible at the firewall, but the rest of it is now stiff and brittle. It had to be broken in at least three places to get these wires off of the engine so we could pull the engine out. The resoult however, is that we have connection labels on 25 items for re-assembly, the engine and tranny are out of the gold car and seperated. We found that the pilot bearing in the end of the crank fell apart - the inner race came out with a little finger pull, the ballsthen fell out. However, the outrace (inside the crank), was tight! Ended up buying a 3 jaw pilot bearing puller ( http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=4876) at harbor frieght, had to grind down the ends of the jaws to allow them to grab the bushing sleeve behind the bearing, then it pulled the bushing (spacer ring) and bearing outer race right out. It was a good investment of $17.00. The faces of the flywheel and pressure plate are nice and smooth. The clutch disk is worn to within approx. .010-.015 of the rivets on one side, so I'm glad we ordered a new disk, in case we needed it. The old disk has the MB star stamped on it, the new one is Saches. The car has over 175,000 miles (when the odometer and speedo stoped working). If this was the original clutch disk, I'm impressed at how long it lasted. Tomorrow we'll pull the engine/auto tranny from the blue car - hope we're faster on this one! -- OK Don ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT, WAS dishwashers, NOW Maytag washing machine
If there is a cover below the door, remove it. There is most likely a sump of some sort that you can access through a large plastic screw in plug. The O ring on this is leaking, or the plug is loose. BTW, this is a regular maintenance item on front loaders. I learned this on our GE front loader after it developed a nasty smell about 9 months into use. The tech came out and showed me how to remove the cover and drain the sump. It's filled with lots of cruft from all the washing that's taken place. It's also the one part of the machine that does not get totally drained, so the water in it can get rather nasty (hence the smell we were getting.) Look your machine up online in one of the appliance parts sites and you'll probably see the arrangement in the exploded view. [MBZ] 240D Transmission issue
I pulled up to a light today in my 1983 240D. When the light changed, I pushed the sifter past drive into neutral and then back into drive, while I was pressing the fuel pedal. The car went clunk and would not go into drive low reverse only park. The linkage looks intact. Any Ideas what I may have broken in the transmission? 151,000 miles on car trans worked great before this. Re: [MBZ] Epic double tranny swap/conversion week
One - there wasn't room to get to the bolt, with everything in the car. It came right out with a six point socket once we had room to get a socket on it (we were using an open end wrench before)! Two - I had considered it, if the surface wasn't nice and smooth, which it is. I expected it to be grooved and/or scored, but it looks really smooth. Perhaps too smooth? The FSM only mentions removing grooves and cracks by grinding, to the acceptable limit. It doesn't say anything about a nice smooth looking surface, so in the interest of getting this car on the road again, we'll take the risk - also since it wokred very well before we took it all apart. Three - we got the engine/auto tranny out of the blue car today. Both are '84 models, but there are several differences, besides the trannys - such as one has an ERG system, and the other doesn't. It doesn't even have a port on the exhaust manifold for a source of exhaust for the EGR. No wonder it ran stronger than the other engine! Now - I asume that removing the auto tranny from the engine is the usual drill - remove the bolts through the hole in the front of the bell housing (looking towards the rear of the tranny), then unbolt the tranny from the bell housing, and carefully pry it off, keeping the torque converter on the tranny. Any other gotchas? On Tue, Mar 16, 2010 at 1:29 PM, R A Bennell b...@mts.net wrote: Two thoughts. One a bit late but maybe for next time. Randy -- OK Don Panic! Rusty old G wagen? At least the steering wheel is on the right side but that would just confuse me in right hand traffic. Plus I don't know where the kids are gonna sit, best thing to do with that is to cut the roof off and use it for pig shooting. Re: [MBZ] Spork plugs (380 SL)
Maybe your O2 sensor has seen better days? Hendrik who has played around with duty cycles Jim Cathey wrote: Some may recall that I'm having a persistent problem with the 380SL, oil-fouling one plug, rough running, poor mileage, etc. Tends to smell stinky gassy a lot. Its last set of long highway trips resulted in much better running and mileage, but now that it's commuting me to and from work it's starting to act up again. I hooked the Fluke 87 (true-RMS) to the lambda control valve. (Kinda cold out, about 22 degrees F; not fun. Still a bit early to be taking the lid off, I guess.) The connector's rubber boot was torn a bit so I finished the job and then I could probe the contacts. With the car warmed up I measured about 2.5 VAC, the frequency was all over the map, from 250-550 Hz---very jumpy. The critical value, the duty cycle, was likewise jumpy and varied from 39% to about 60%, though spent most of its time in the 45-55% area. When I unplugged the valve the engine nearly died, so the system is not totally dysfunctional. I tried grounding the single-pin temperature sensor, and didn't really get a reaction. Perhaps it's the wrong one? The other sensor I found up there caused the auxiliary fan to go on when I grounded it. According to Probst's book a grounded sensor is supposed to result in a fixed 60% duty cycle for cold-start purposes. I saw no sign of that, even though I started probing just after cold start. More research is required. I would think that an analog computer, which I think this might be, would have a smoother output than this seems to. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I don't full understand the engineering behind it but the concept is that you open the doors with an electric motor and this motor would hold the door shut or open. Re: [MBZ] Superturbo project platform?
Geez that thing has more buttons than the space shuttle. Apparently men love to have lots of buttons, whilst the ladies don't like lots of buttons. Anyway from what I have heard the 202 is a good chassis and not rust prone like the 210. Roomier than the 201(but then again the toilet in a Concorde is roomier than a 201). If I was looking for a late 90's MB I would not knock back a 202. They are a bit bland styling wise but that's MB for ya. That thing should fly with a AMG 3.6 motor but parts for the motor are very expensive and it may well have a hard 119K miles.
