I've got a 24v cordless impact wrench I bought at a tool show thats not bad at all for $99. It claims 250# of torque which is enough to break loose most anything 1/2 tools are good for. It'll put on lug bolts harder than it can take back off though so I always use a torque wrench. -Curt Date: Mon, 29 Mar 2010 17:11:19 -0500 From: Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] New Bilsteins from Rusty Message-ID: a06240858c7d6d5b29...@[192.168.1.112] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii ; format=flowed I just got a flyer from HF today. they have an electric rattle wrench for $40. Funny we were talking about broken dishwashers just the other day... My 25 year old Kitchenaid started making ugly noises and in diagnosing I managed to break the hard water line that feeds the machine. I didn't realize it was a hard line and tried to pull the unit out which you obviously can't do... Its about a 3/8 soft copper line with flare fittings. I'm wondering if people are using soft lines for this considering its a hot water line. It'd certainly be easier to run a soft line than a hard line plus I don't have a flair tool. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Dishwasher repair
They make the reinforced plastic lines for sinks and such. One of those should work with the right fittings to adapt each end. I would guess that if you got 25 years out of one, you would be lucky. The copper tube is something that you don't have to worry about. Most home despot type stores also have the SS braid lines. Those should be ok too, but the liner is very thin walled. Copper or hose, if you get one long enough to make one coil in the center, then someone like you can pull the unit out and not break off the line. One other option is to buy a length of high pressure hose (3/8) and slide it over a 2-3 stump of copper tube at each end and put hose clamps on it. You don't need the high pressure, but high pressure hose has extra reinforcement and lasts longer than low pressure hose. (400 to 500 PSI is enough) Even hose rated 250 psi would do. Transmission oil cooler hose from McParts should work fine. I think it is rated about 250 and is made for hot operating conditions. 1000psi plastic hose is hard to work with. I would avoid that. Stick with a black rubber hose. Funny we were talking about broken dishwashers just the other day... I've always had a lot of curiosity, but, thankfully, it has never reached that level. ; BTW, when I got home from Greenland in '79 we were needing another car. I had decided that I wanted to get 240D. It was about Aug/Sep, and MB stealers didn't have any new ones - waiting for '80's. Meanwhile, I drove past an Oldsmobile dealership and saw a new Olds Diesel sitting there; took it for a drive; almost bought it, but hesitated for coupla days; 'called MB stealer, again, and they then had a 240D. That, along with the nights I flew missions to Hanoi, was another lucky day, when I did not buy that Olds. I dodged a lot of SAMs (missiles) over Hanoi; dodged a big bullet that day. Re: [MBZ] water
No MB diesel came out of the factory with a water separator? maybe so. certainly none for the US market after 1960 or so had a separate device called a water separator. However EVERY MB diesel has a well designed filter that pulls fuel off the TOP effectively trapping up to 8 oz or so of water. GM, on the other hand, put a crappy little filter in their Diesel fuel lines, hidden behind the air cleaner, and designed it so that ONE drop of water in the filter went directly to the injector nozzles and damaged the nozzles. THAT is why anyone with an oldsmodissel NEEDS a water separator (and a good filter) if they expect to get any life out of the thing. I had a friend who put hundreds of K miles on 80s oldsmodissel engines in the SHovey pickups. When they got a pickup, they put a filter/separator on it. That had a lot to do with the engine life. That and not running it wide open. ..I would point out that no MB diesel ever came from the factory with a water separator. .. I hope you are not suggesting that they didn't need one. However EVERY MB diesel has a well designed filter that pulls fuel off the TOP effectively trapping up to 8 oz or so of water That may be your theory but in practice it doesn't work worth a damn. I dunno, maybe all that nailing from enlarged injector holes is music to your ears and you consider it normal. I did not. I bought my '78 300D new and during the warranty period (that's the first 50K miles) my dealer replaced thirteen injectors, or later on, injector tips, because of excess diesel rattle. Caused by small amounts of water, they said. And the warranty claims were approved because MB knew damn well that water could get into the injectors. Just about the time the warranty ended, I became aware of water separators and the Racor in particular. I bought one, fabricated a steel bracket for the left fender well for it and from that day on the noises caused by water damaged injector tips were gone forever. I drove it another 70K miles. Just to save some effort here, please, no advice about buying from high volume stations or keeping the tank full to reduce condensation or any other standard advice. Oh, and please don't mention Marshall's comments on the subject. My friend AC used to own a trucking business (about 15 KW semis running up and down the coast and he told me that they all had water separators and as a result he would finally replace injectors at about 700K miles. Re: [MBZ] 124 ball joints.
I did them on my wagon with the press that Rusty rents (which presses the new joints into place) plus: - hack saw - 10 lb maul - jack stands - lots of practice splitting firewood (note that no spring compressor is needed). To remove, put a jack stand under the control arm as close as possible to the ball joint You want to support the control arm very near the joint. Take off all the bits in the way, until all you have is the stem of the ball joint sticking up. Cut that stem off flush with hack saw. Pound out remains with 10 lb maul (about 30 to 40 careful blows). The jack stand being close to the joint transfers the energy from the hammer blow directly to the joint without allowing the control arm to flex. Mess up one swing and your fender will be scared forever. After completing the job this way, I resolved to pay the man next time. -Max From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com on behalf of Dieselhead Sent: Sat 3/27/2010 7:51 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 124 ball joints. See: http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/mb190d.html#30Aug2008 The base HF kit works, but you need some pipe scraps too. I did a bit of welding on the pipe scraps, but hose clamps might work just as well. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com http://www.okiebenz.com/ For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com http://www.okiebenz.com/ For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Sobering WW2 war photos
They were using 35mm, 120 (6x6cm or 6x9cm), and 4x5 cameras. The most grainy photos might be single frames from movie camera in either 35mm or 16mm. Why are you surprised by good exposure, focus, and composition from manual film cameras??? You only have to know what you're doing. I'm impressed by all the photos of the troops arriving, the photog had to be the first one off the boat! A lot (if not most) of that film was processed in the field as well (or on board the ships). You can see the results of working in less than ideal conditions in some of the prints, though the more popular images also suffered darkroom abuse from multiple printings. Re: [MBZ] wasser
DO tell us what Marshall had to say about water separators! Well, Woger, you do live where it rains every day. You dealer probably turned your filter upside down just for you! .No MB diesel came out of the factory with a water separator? maybe so. certainly none for the US market after 1960 or so had a separate device called a water separator. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
