Re: [MBZ] Taxi!!
I've had it happen a couple times locally. The driver can bet in trouble, and the company has to send another cab or demand that that driver come back and take the fare. Of course, it's not too fun riding around with a woman/man who doesn't really want you in their cab! There are so many of us with guide dogs in the area which helps, but it's more likely to happen when in another town. [MBZ] First Year Attorney Tries to Get Me...
Donald will probably enjoy this... I put my 1994 Yamaha VX1100 Virago on CL last week. Got the usual window shoppers, even the requisite, "I'm on disability, and as soon as I get my next check I'll come and buy it" responses. Anyway, a nice young man (who is a first year practicing attorney) came by on Sunday and spent a fair amount of time looking at it and talking with me about it. He decided to buy it, and offered me a $400 deposit to keep it until this weekend, when he could make arrangements to get it. During our discussion, he asked me the price, which I said I would give him the lowest price I had advertised, the amount which I stated, as I had top posted several times with incrementally higher prices each time to fool the CL bots, and he couldn't recall which ad he had seen. Anyway, I got an email from him today saying he couldn't recall what my asking price was, and that he would offer me about $200 below the price I had listed on CL. Right. I sent him a very nice reply, reviewing the statements I made regarding the price and that he did nothing to acknowledge anything different, and then went about giving me a deposit. As far as I'm considered, it was a deal. But, in the interest of fairness, I would be happy to refund his deposit and call off the deal. It will be interesting to see what his response is. I gotta give him credit for trying. One of the best things about selling stuff is when you have a good price and refuse to drop it. I guess because the economy is so lousy and many people are desperate for money, they'll haggle. It's like going to buy a car and being willing to walk away. Drives people nuts, I think I love it! Re: [MBZ] OT Chevy small blocks
A glob of silicone sealant wrecked the crank (and block eventually) on my brother's 75 300D. It blocked the oil flow to the #2 crankpin, which eventually scored the crank and caused it to break. I've also seen a bit of paper towel ruin a large engine by blocking the flow of oil to a bearing. Doesn't take all that much, just has to prevent oil from going past. Pressure is fairly low, after all, something like 65 psi max. Re: [MBZ] OT Chevy small blocks
There are several known points of failure on these guys. First and foremost, a broken pressure relief valve spring will cause a complete loss of oil pressure. So will a broken drive shaft inside the pump (no rotation of the gears although the shaft turns). You may also have a worn out oil pump if it was not replaced, they aren't like a Benz, there isn't that much reserve capacity to allow wear. Check to make sure you don't have too much oil flow to the upper end -- some of them over-oil the lifter gallery, and if the lifter holes are worn, they will drop oil pressure. And it may just have been a crappy rebuild. Not uncommon on those, the usual cheap job is to ball hone the cylinder and toss in oversized rings and slap cheap bearings in it. Worse yet, people do a valve job and restore the compression on a worn engine and don't do the bottom half, leaving you will marginal crank and rods on a new engines. They often toss a rod shortly after a head job for that reason. Check the bores for shiny spots around the bolts -- if this is the case, the rebuild was junk. You can only machine or measure those bores properly with a torque plate, the bolts distort the cylinders quite a bit, so if machined without the plate bolted on, the pistons will bind when you put the head on Peter ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Of course, the data is suspect if it's being recorded by a computer that is the subject of inquiry. After all, if the brake lights aren't run by a simple switch, but operated by the computer like the ignition, they wouldn't be on, would they? The data should only be used for this inquiry if it is recorded completely separately by another device, not the main CPU. I would suggest that someone needs to determine if the computer will record bogus data before depending on it. [MBZ] Car love?
My indy has a small shop in which he works on a surprising number of cars of all makes. He is originally from Iran and was educated as an engineer. But, someone from Iran had a hard time finding a job as an engineer in the early 1980's. Now, his family owns two very large Mercedes dealerships in Iran, so he was always around MB's. When he couldn't find work as a mechanical engineer, he relied on what he knew which was cars. He had various shops, and gas stations, etc. until he bought his current place 20+ years ago. He never wanted to be in the car business, but he does love cars and he is certainly very successful (you should see some of the beautiful cars he has restored and sold and a few that he has kept). Well, his son has grown up around his father's cars and the business. He wanted his son NOT be in the car business. He wanted him to do something that he loves. BUT, alas, I think it is going to be cars. His son came home from his freshman year at University of Kansas and was helping around the shop. I was there a few weeks ago and his son bought a 1950 Plymouth. Unbelievably, it ran and ran well. So, he fixed a few things up and cleaned it. He was going to restore it to perfect condition. 1 week later he sold it. A local priest came by the shop, saw it, fell in love and begged him to sell it. Then, he bought an old Jeep Willys pickup (I have never seen one like it) and started working on it. Boom, sold it in a week. Now, he is looking for an old International Scout. Car love. You either have it or you don't. If you do, its incurable. Donald H. Randy wrote: "My recollection is also that one needs to change the timing sprockets and chain around 100K miles. They use a nylon sprocket to keep things quiet and they wear out." That was true on the older generation 3800. I know it was true on the 85 and 86 (the first years for the FWD 88 and 98). But, I think they had addressed that by 1988. I know that in 1990, the 3800 received some serious upgrades and none of the cars past 1990 need timing chains. I can't remember a single one needing a timing chain when I was at the dealership and there were cars with 300,000 miles on them. The best years of the 3800 were from 1990-1995 and then after they got the intake problem fixed. GM has never specifically released vin numbers on that, so there are reports of model year 2000 being the fix. But, I would be safe and say 2001. Since then, the 3800 has been great. It is a real shame that it is being replaced (if it hasn't been totally replaced already) with the 3.5 "shortstar" and the 3.6 direct injection engine. The 3800 was used in so many cars for so many years, that GM really did perfect it. Donald H. [MBZ] OT Chevy small blocks
Anyone on here with real experience with older Chevy small blocks? I finally pulled the oilpan on the motor from the boat to have a look. It was fairly obvious from the knocking noises that it had suffered a loss of oil pressure. We half expected to find the oil pickup had fallen off of the pump. However that was not the case. The oil pump is intact and the shaft turns when one turns the crankshaft with a breaker bar. Pulled bearing caps and found what I expected. The mains are bad as are the connecting rod bearings. The crank will need be be ground or replaced. So, it lacked oil for some reason. That leads me to believe that either an oil channel got plugged so it did not flow or that some plug came out and resulted in no real oil pressure. Unfortunate as the engine had been totally rebuilt not too long prior to its failure. This was before the boat came to me so I was not present. Friends had owned it since new and it was bebuilt the summer before it came to grief. They tell me they were motoring along when it seemed to lose power and then they noted the oil pressure gauge had dropped and they shut it off. They came back in on the auxiliary engine and I do not think it has run since. We acquired it from them and never tried to start it. We did crank it over to try to distribute anti freeze before storing it for the winter and it sounded awful. A real deep knock. I do not beieve that it was run without oil in the crank case. There was oil when we drained it and it was really messed up - lots of obvious metal in it. So, why did it lose pressure? Any ideas on what I should look for? Have not pulled enough parts yet to lift the crank out and look at the holes that feed the crank. That may be sufficient to tell the tale. I doubt it is anything a simple as incorrect parts installed as I believe it was run for a summer without problems before it came to grief the next summer. Most amazing modern American car I ever drove was the Chevrolet Caprice, a veritable "boat" of a car. My son and I rented one (they were out of compacts!) and took it all over the West back in 1991. It handled amazingly well and was surprisingly nimble for such a huge vehicle. And we did appreciate the capacious interior as well. Re: [MBZ] Wild weather
Rain seldom is a problem here, and the runoff is so good with the drain system, it only ever rises a bit in the low parts of the garden, if it REALLY comes down. Heaviest rain I ever recall seeing was in Florida. The parking lot was a bit lower than the surrounding ground, and within an hour or so, people were wading out to their cars, only to open the doors, and have the water rush into the interior. My first time experiencing anything like that. Another time was down in Jamaica, but that was during a typhoon or something. Hope all the cars checkout ok for you later today. I think the 3800 is a great engine too. Whenever anyone questions America's ability to make a good engine, mention the 3800. Super reliable, great torque, smooth, and has moved a variety of pretty large cars, on a surprising small amount of fuel. If it has more than 100,000 miles and it hasn't been done, then you already have coolant in the cylinders and potential bearing damage. Its not even a bad job if you want to do it yourself. I think its best to replace both the upper and lower manifolds, but there are people that claim you can just do the upper. You will be amazed at the power of the 3.8 and even more amazed at the great fuel mileage. Donald H. Wow - close call! I remember a couple rainy Julys on visits in the past decade. When it rains hard up there it is really something to behold. We also had some severe storms in DC last night but thankfully no flooding. We had been experience a moderate drought, so the precip was welcome. [MBZ] Wild weather
Rained so hard here this morning that I don't know if I have ever seen it rain harder. Rained alot like that last evening for an hour or so too. We have a low spot on the street to the south of our home. We get flooding in that area periodically and have learned, after having 3 vehicles flooded while sitting on the street, to watch out for rising waters. I had to leave the house this morning for a meeting at 7 AM. It was raining really hard and I knew there would be big puddles on the streets so I took my truck. Got soaked just trying to get to it and get in even with a raincoat and umbrella. Got a big dirty smudge on my shirt too and I was the speaker at our business club meeting this morning - oh well what can you do? In any event, we had 4 cars on the street this morning. The old 4Runner which is not only higher than the cars but was also on the highest ground as well as my wife's Accord, my son's Maxima and my 300D. My car normally sits in the garage but I have been working on something in the garage and there is currently "no room at the inn" so to speak. Thankfully, my wife was keeping her eyes open and she and my younger son managed to move all 3 of the cars to higher ground before they flooded. The water was up to the door level on the 300D which was in the lowest spot. No one else drives it so I am pleased that they were able to get it going and move it. Will have to check the tranny and diff and make sure they did not ingest any water as they were probably in deep enough to do so. Re: [MBZ] OT: Data recorders suggest drivers at fault in Toyota crashes
I'm not saying the throttle was not floored the recorder says it was. The question is whether the driver was doing it or the computer was. However the recorder also shows that the brakes were not being applied, and this is consistent with the physical evidence in some of these accidents (e.g. the parking garage video that shows no brake lights until AFTER the car accelerates into the wall and comes to a stop). I do think there were also some reports of evidence that brakes were applied... brake rotors burned blue, etc. I'm guessing there may be some cases of real throttle malfunction, which when reported drew out a lot of other claims from people who simply mixed up the gas and the brake pedal. You just disconnect the brake hose, support the suspension, unbolt the shock/strut, and lower until the spring is loose, right? Pretty much. [MBZ] rear suspension upgrade 84 300D
I had my independent garage owner, replace 4 rear control arm bushings, replace both axle bearings(one was leaking) switch sides on the axles, replace boots on right side(other side was new) replace subframe bushings Parts came from Rusty ! Thanks Labor cost $520.00 at 55.00 per hour. Seemed like a fair price, was he in the ball park? Ride is greatly improved and the rear steering and sway is gone. It feels great and I would highly recommend it. Mike p.s. still working on intermittent hard starting problems by replacing hoses. Difficult to diagnose because it doesn't happen all the time. Recently it happens immediately after shutting down, but works fine after sitting for a couple of hours. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT: Data recorders suggest drivers at fault in Toyota crashes
So you're believing the data recorder when it says that the brakes weren't applied but it can be ignored that it says the throttle was floored? It seems like the problem here is that the main computer system, data recorder included, is suspect. We can't really believe the data recorder... What we need is a case where the data recorder says the brakes weren't applied and the skid marks say they were. Of course while the big hoo-ha was going on my wife calls me and says she's scared to drive the Ranger because the throttle sticks. I drove it for a week and never had ANYTHING like a throttle sticking incident. She claims she was pushing hard on the brake and the engine revved higher and higher. I asked "did the car slow down any?" She says "No it sped up." I gave her a hard look and suggested that next time it does it she take her foot OFF the gas and press on the brake gently... She realized her mistake and was sheepish. -Curt Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2010 23:13:44 -0400 From: Allan Streib To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Data recorders suggest drivers at fault in Toyota crashes Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mitch Haley writes: > I thought the problem was the computer getting the idea the throttle > was floored when it really was not. Re: [MBZ] W123 wagon with jarring ride and and inaccuratespeedometer
Doesn't sound like 'too high' is your problem, so maybe you have some failed rubber somewhere making noise. Has anyone 'fixed' your suspension by adjusting the rod between control valve and torsion bar? If you want to investigate further, following should be approached with caution. A lift which keeps the car weight on the rear wheels is nice, or ramps would be OK to. If you have a real problem, the car may lower too far and crush anyone underneath if there is not sufficient clearance. With the car in unloaded state and 'ready to drive' , engine running, you disconnect the control rod, push the control valve arm to 'drain' which is the down position for a few seconds, then return the control valve is in the neutral position. That will allow the system to stabilize at base pressure, which should be enough pressure to hold the rear of the car at the correct height when it is not loaded. Measure again to see where your height is now. If no different, then you can probably assume that the control valve is working and adjusted correctly. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of andrew strasfogel Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 2010 11:44 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] W123 wagon with jarring ride and and inaccuratespeedometer In that case, I'm roughly 1/2" too high.
