I had a 190Dc that was rusted so bad that when you opened the back door, it sagged so much it was hard to get the door closed again. I had welded the front bumper on with coathanger and scrap metal (It was rusted off) When a ford pulled out in front of me and I could not avoid it, The ford was totalled, and on the MB, I had to wire up the right side of the front bumper and it lost the right side chrome strip under the doors. We finished the trip and I drove it for another year or so. Now, Tell be about how your new detriot iron is better than a rusty old MB? My first MB came from Minnesota, was very rusted. Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts
Actually G05 at the Car Quest 1/2 mile from my house in the little backwater burg of Winchendon (pop 5000) is cheaper than storebrand green stuff at Autozone or Advance in the "big city" of Gardner (pop 20,000) 5 miles away. Strange but true. The Car Quest brand 15w40 is cheaper by the gallon than ANY oil at the big FLAPs too and only marginally more expensive than the cheapest Wal-Mart has. -Curt Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2010 17:38:15 -0400 From: John Reames To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts Message-ID: <94e8cba2-05fe-4a11-b9a0-ead3c7995...@comcast.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii On an aluminum body pump, that's a shooting offense) (then hang them for stinking) Uncalibrated adulteration to those things is bad mojo/juju/karma. Re: [MBZ] 300 TDT
Back in the 80's when DE Davis was leader of C&D his company car was a new top of the line 300 Wagon. Then they started modifying it. Lowered it with new mag wheels & tires, great stereo system and some other mods including a paint job. It really came out great looking - IIRC the trim line was the dividing line between a black lower side and light brown upper and a white roof. But my memory is pretty vague. While out, I saw the very best 300 TDT that I've seen in years. Two of my very most favourite cars, are a grey mercedes wagon, and an old porsche 911. I'm only sorry I didn't have my camera with me. The car today was dark grey, with black leather interior. As Roger would say, this is no such thing as perfect, but they car as it stood, could easily be driven into a car show, with no apologizes. Leather was fade, rip, and crease free, paint was redone I'm sure, without a ripple or hint of over spray. If the chrome wasn't redone, it would win the survivors class for sure! I couldn't see a mark or pit on it anywhere. All exterior rubber was perfectly formed, no oxidization or anything. A really really lovely car. I even stuck around to wait for the owner to return, to compliment him on the car. As it's about 100F here today, that pretty much tells the impression the car left on me. Seeing it reaffirmed what I felt for many years. If I could only have 2 cars, it would be that guys wagon, and my old 911. I could live quite happily never having another car. Great to see an old car, that obviously has such love and attention spent on it. Cheers Dieselhead They are Nylock nuts. Sounds as though I should back them off quite a bit. Thanks indeed Euan My memory is fuzzy on this, but i recall the struts have Nylock nuts. They should compress the rubber to some extent, but should not be run to the end of the threads. I am sure there is a spec, but i'd guess 3-4 turns after snug would be enough. Too tight, and they will transmit vibration. Unless you know the motor mounts and trans mount are new, they are probably the problem. I keep noticing interesting things about my "new" '84 190D. Today I realized its got a group 49 battery. My '85 didn't. When I replaced the old battery I got a group 49 but it wouldn't fit in the battery box without removing (and subsequently losing) the hold down. I'd always intended to make a new hold down but never got to it. On this car I planned to make the new hold down and transfer in the relatively new Group 49 from the '85 until I realized there was no need. I said "I dunno, I've never driven it at night" to which he replied "They're pointed right at the ground" and proceeded to adjust them for me, for free... Then we noticed the pool of ATF under the car. Whoops, didn't see that before. It makes a small pool under the nose and another under the pan, could that be just a bad cooler line? I've got a gasket and filter for a trans service I was planning on doing in a week or two. He wouldn't go any further at that point, I feel bad for dirtying his nice clean inspection bay... Well yeah but this was a $400 car remember... It also needs a paint job, major rust repair, rear suspension work, front suspension work, one window doesn't work, AC doesn't work, etc etc etc... Its cheaper to buy a nicer car... I bought this car to learn how to work on cars. I did all the brakes, the exhaust, the water pump (should remember to get that back), rust repair, the antenna, replaced and repainted the hood, re-did the dash pod (with LED lighting), radiator hoses, drag link (which I should also keep), idler arm, and other stuff I can't even recall right now. Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) Re: 201 rearview mirror?
Yank real hard on the part that mounts to the car? Which direction? Whichever way works. There's two spring-loaded 'bullet' points in the mirror base that detent into the window frame. It's supposed to pop loose if your head hits it rather than puncture your skull. Sometimes they get a bit stiff and dry and don't want to come out. I snapped off the one on my 560 SL by yanking too hard, it needed a bit of gentle prying with a screwdriver to get it out. I cleaned and lubed the spring and detents, peeled back the rubber, drilled a center hole in the pot metal and JB-Welded a screw spine into the break to hold it back together. I now make a note to be real careful with _that_ one, and to not go ape on one just because the correct procedure is to yank. Yank, yes, but no harder than is commensurate with a pot-metal casting! -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
