Nerves of steel, nerves of steel.
I kept thinking of all the submariners in ww2 who sat under depth

For those who have not seen it, Das Boot is a good U boat movie that
conveys some of the terror of serving on these things.

[MBZ] W123 valve adjustment leads to vacuum door leaks? ? Or is it a coincidence?

2010-09-12 Thread andrew strasfogel
I finally adjusted the valves on the 1985 300TD, with the help of my very
skilled neighbor, also a Benz nut.

It was a bit of a struggle removing the valve cover, and when everything
was back in place the door locks no longer held vacuum for more than a
couple hrs. (vs. a couple weeks before the engine work). I carefully went
over all the lines under the hood and replaced a couple short connectors
that had worn out, and even plugged in a line that had come off, but this
made no difference. The vacuum still leaks down in hours rather than days.
What could I have missed? Or is this merely a diabolical coincidence?

Sounds like it's time for MityVac!

You should be able to test most if not all of the components for the
door lock system from the junction points under the driver's carpet.
You can also test the dash pods from the junction block next the PB unit
(I know the location for a 124 - remove glove box to access - but I've
never worked on a 123 HVAC).

After that, you've got transmission vacuum input.

The vacuum distribution for the central locking system on a 123 is under the
passenger side carpet, I believe.

Yellow with a red tracer is lock, yellow with a green tracer is unlock.

You might have disturbed the line to the vacuum reservoir, which is in the
driver's side fender on this car. There is a check valve at the reservoir, if
my memory serves me correctly. If this is leaking or failed you'll leak down
in a relatively short time.

I meant no disrespect when I spoke about the three submariners that I know.
Anyone who can live in a metal cylinder for that length of time has got a
special place for them in you know where.

Interesting observation on your part - one of the people I know was an enlisted
man, and he is very competent with his skills and analytical abilities. A nice
guy, too.

The other two I know are both officers, and they exhibit some pretty
interesting personality traits when under pressure. One of them lashes out at
subordinates and is pretty irrational - this was not uncommon behavior for him,
and the reason why I left a job where he was my superior. A real Jekyll
Hyde sort of guy. It also resulted in him being terminated from the position
he held when he was my superior. When I chose to leave I reported his
behaviors to the business owners, as they were totally unaware of this. They
made some inquiries of his other direct reports along with observing him, and
within a few months he was gone.

The other former officer is a good guy, but has some interesting personality
quirks. In fairness to him, he could have been this way long before he went to
New London.

Any rubber vacuum line, hard line, or connector is suspect on a car that
old. Especially in the heat of the engine compartment, they get brittle
with age. You likely bumped one and caused a hairline crack. Might be
worth replacing all the rubber and connectors at least (if you do,
replace ONE section at a time, do not remove all the old and then try to
remember what was connected to what).

Re: [MBZ] SF sub

2010-09-12 Thread LWB250
The customer I knew who served on the Blueback told some pretty nasty stories
about his service. On the last diesel-electric sub, despite being state of
the art, so to speak, it was pretty unpleasant.

He talked about everything in the boat reeking of diesel fuel, and the noise
and heat from the engines being bad enough that the lucky ones were the guys
who were stationed in the forward torpedo room, as it was the quietest and
coolest place on the boat. He said it was not uncommon to find guys bunking up
front wherever they could, even sleeping on the torpedoes.

He also talked about how, when they provisioned and were leaving on a tour,
literally every place on the boat was stuffed with food and other provisions.
The walkways up and down the boat would have cases of canned goods stacked 2-3
high, reducing the headroom significantly, and even the showers would be packed
with things like fresh produce, leaving them unusable until the provision were
used up or relocated to another area.

I learned the term hot bunking from him. It refers to the situation where
there was only one bunk/rack per 2-3 submariners, meaning that when you were
ready to turn in, your bunk would still be warm from the guy who just mustered
out. I also learned what a Navy shower was, too. Ugh.

It sounded pretty awful to me.

Not taking anything from those who
serve on nukes, but I would think the
pucker factor was somewhat higher on a WWII diesel/electric
 sub that
could not go very deep and could not stay down very long,
 comparatively.

A modern nuclear sub can go silent/deep and pretty much
 disappear for as
 long as it needs to.

 Speaking from ignorance, however.

Re: [MBZ] W123 valve adjustment leads to vacuum door leaks? ? Or is it a coincidence?

2010-09-12 Thread LWB250
That's part of the kickdown system, if I recall, and if you remove the cover
you'll see some vacuum valves with little white plastic levers that operate
them. These are usually toast after a number of years, and i many cases are
completely non-functional due to being worn out.

Rusty can get you a new set, which takes all of about 5 minutes to replace.

Once of those cheap fixes that yields nice results.

Does it have that box on top of the
valve cover that has 3 or 4 lines (or maybe more) going
in/out of it?  On my son's 84 SD those lines did not
fit well, and that caused problems.  On my wife's 84SD
they seem to be better behaved, in better shape I guess.

[MBZ] 2010 ChowdaQ a smashing success!

2010-09-12 Thread Curt Raymond
This year's ChowdaQ blew all expectations, 10 MB's (2 of other marques) with
15 people. We even had 3 previous unknowns from the PeachParts gang.

We had our wides variety of chow yet, Dwight started us off with A1 Chowda,
Fred brought the greens and I cooked up a variety of meats including terriaki
beef skewers, chicken kabobs, burgers, hot dogs and spicy moose sausage (no
joke!) Tom rounded out the day with fresh espresso to settle our stomachs.

Awards we given for jalopys, not so jalopys, story telling expertise and
cooking expertise (that might be a stretch) complete with impressive trophys
Burt provided. Door prizes included a polo shirt donated by Rusty, a copy of
The Star and the Laurel from Dwight and a new in box MB hood star from Fred.

Several test drives were taken and comparisons made to cars current and past
and a fine time was had by all.

You can see the results on Photobucket:

Can I rebuild the tank system on these? - no pressure build up.

[MBZ] OT...Computer Issue

2010-09-12 Thread Bob Rentfro
Okay computer smart guysmy 7 yr old PC has starting shutting itself off.
The box sounds like it has a fan and the hard drive running, but the hard
drive just shuts itself off. Sometimes it stays on for 2-3 minutes before it
shuts down, but now never more than 10. After it goes dark I have to hold in
the power button, downpower the whole unit, then restart it. But, it does
the same thing.

What is that nonsense?

How does one distinguish the transmission-related vacuum lines from the door
lock related lines?

That's part of the kickdown system, if I recall, and if you remove the
cover you'll see some vacuum valves with little white plastic levers that
operate them. These are usually toast after a number of years, and i many
cases are completely non-functional due to being worn out.

I laughed out loud at that siggy line.

Hendrik
who also sometimes smells of Diesel, the manly perfume

I wear Eau de Dino Diesel often too. Especially when checking tank
screens and changing the tank hoses.

Now I am learning the smell of B50 to B75. The exhaust smells
metallic and a little weird. The raw fuel smell in the car is worse
than petro diesel for some reason.

Some day I will need those numbers for viton hose and return line.
