Re: [MBZ] 617 Manual Flywheel Measurements

2010-09-28 Thread Walt Zarnoch
Hmm, now we're getting somewhere...

Based on the crank flange's thickness of 12mm and the given length of
20mm for the flywheel stretch bolts, it seems reasonable that the web
thickness is something around 7mm-8mm, depending on if the bolts go
through the flange fully or not.

I've already found the friction surface to plate mount dimensions in
the fsm, and have used the worst-case values given.

When I said "face of the lip" I was referring to the outer face of the
chamfered lip that comes up past the pressure plate on the 617
flywheel.

Got the BCD off the crank of my dead-ish 616 a few minutes ago using
the tried and true "measure between the holes" method.

Looks like I'll need to make a spacer and use automatic trans flex
plate bolts (11mm longer) to get full engagement of the clutch to the
input shaft. Anyone see a problem if I add 11mm between the flywheel
and crank?
I've got a suspicion the main bearing won't like it, but the torque
converter would be out at least that far already and the engines seem
to hold up fine.

Walt, who is now hunting for the flex plate to get measurements...

I presume you mean the height from the ledge upon which the pressure
plate mounts to the friction surface of the flywheel. Section 03-420,
Refacing flywheel, of the Service Manual, Engines 615, 616, 617.91 gives
this as 22.5 to 22.6 mm (0.8858 to 0.8898 inch). There is a rim around

Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a 617 manual flywheel they could measure?

2010-09-28 Thread Dieselhead
I was trying to get the list dad to give am a 602 turbo for my 240D.
I believe that the OM60x engine will not bolt up to a OM61x
transmission, auto or standard. I think the solution is to
transplant the engine and transmission form the donor. Modifications
of motor mounts, trans mount and driveshaft may ensue. I was
thinking today that an OM602 turbo would make a nice engine for a 107
and increase the economy and the reliability. But check the
interchange before you buy or not.

Just playing around on EPC, for a 615 engine, there are more than a few
different flywheels available, with part numbers starting with 115, 615,
617, 602, and 102. Sounds like any manual transmission MB from the 70s
or 80s will have a flywheel that will mate up to a 617 (or a 615).

Also begs the question of whether or not an OM602 or 603 would bolt up
to a manual transmission from a 123 car.

Perhaps one with greater EPC skills than I can tease out that
information.

I am 99.9% certain that the 300d and 240d use the same part for the
flyheel face, it is the outter ring that is different. They are not one
piece flywheels. One of the guys on std probably already has said cad
drawing but its always fun to do your own. The 300gd flywheel is
remarkable different, I would use that in a truck any day of the week.
What kind of project are you doing with the truck? om617 in a ford or
the like?

The 616 flywheel is thinner than the 617 one is, so the lip to
pressure plate measurement would be off a few cm. That's not too big a

problem though. The bolt face to crank face dim should be the same
though, since the same bolts are used between the 616 and 617.

Just remembered I can measure off of the crank on the 616 to get the
bolt circle diameter, there's one down.

I'll scout around on the inner-tubes some more and see if I can find

it.

 I
found a few dimensions in the engine service manual, but the set is
 incomplete.

If anyone has an easily accessible flywheel and a set of verniers,
and feels up to the task, the needed measurements are the thickness
from the crank mating surface to the bolt mating surface, the bolt
circle diameter from center point of bolt holes, and the depth to
the pressure plate mating surface from the face of the lip.

Much thanks to anyone who helps,

Yes, but ask them exactly what they are going to do to it.

When I was in college, I took my '59 Alfa Romeo Spyder Veloce in to a
muffler shop and they boogered it up. I thought they would resurrect the
flange that connected to the output of one of the headers, but no, they
cut the mating flange on the header off and welded a pipe to the header.
Made it kind of hard to get the header off because you have to separate
the header from the muffler and the other header to do that. That, and
they put in two mufflers, one for each header. It turned out the much of
the noise cancellation was from piping the output of both headers
together, and then to the muffler.

Ask first!

They guy who helped me with the SL today was really nice. (See the
post under 116 Engine Diagram) He let me look at an 84 SL he had,
and rework all the vacuum lines. They were all messed up. I also
snagged a condensor for my SDL, so next summer I can have A/C. His
name is Ronnie Goudet in Gu'fport, MS.

Ronnie has a whole bunch of MBs in his yard. I saw everything from
115 to E320 124. Mostly 123, 124, and 126 with a few 107s thrown in.
Ronnie is a 300SD fan, so he has lots of those for parts. pretty
much all have rustfree body parts. Many were underwater in katrina,
but the body parts are ok. Good to know if you live in the rust
belt. And best of all, his prices are reasonable. Kinda Okie Acres
South. So if Kaleb can't get you the used parts you need call
Ronnie. He is not really in the junkyard business. He runs a shop.
But he probably will sell you parts if you ask. And if you end up on
the Gu'f Coast and need some help, Call Ronnie. Even for your
sunburnban or Caravan

Re: [MBZ] M116 engine diagram

2010-09-28 Thread Dieselhead
According the info I find it should be 116,962 12 Looks like I don't
need the diagram now. After much poking and prodding, finding and 84
to look at the vacuum arrangement, and finally finding a diagram of
the vacuum arrangement. A local here, Ronnie Goudet had the book and
84, and he figured out the timing was screwed up and so was the
injection. So we reset the distributor, and I rewired all the vacuum
lines, and then he screwed down the fuel, and we had it idling at
800 in neutral. It appears that although the ICV is sticky, that it
is functioning for the time being, sometimes with a little tapping
for encouragement. pretty much a case of being mechaniced to
(almost) death.

Thanks

Email launching shortly, screen shots from EPC.

I had two choices: M116.960, or .962. I picked .960 - let me know if
that's wrong and I'll get the .962 images for you.

I dunno, picture the scene: well-dressed young man randomly follows
you into the fuel station, is driving a nice E320, starts talking to
you, tells you he is a lawyer and has some kind of used-car fetish,
and asks if you want to sell your car. In the situation I'd probably
have asked $20K, and my paint job looks like it sat under a tree for

Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a 617 manual flywheel they could measure?

2010-09-28 Thread Walt Zarnoch
Here's a pic of mine mounted on the 617 from before it went in the truck.

http://zarnochwf1.com/gallery2/d/637-3/IMG_1742.JPG

It came from a 240D donor oddly enough, but it's a 300D flywheel for sure.

Also present is the current adapter plate that fits a (modified)
Mitsubishi KM145 tranny.

I'll be pushing 31" tires with a 4.22:1 diff, so not sure if I want
more torque or more acceleration now. I know that a heavier flywheel
means greater fuel economy, but after thinking about it I don't want
to get passed by minivans...

$1200 is more than I'm willing to pay for a flywheel upgrade right
now, partly because the truck was less than that, partly because I
can't justify it if I have one that will already work.

Which FSM covers it? I've got a paper copy of what appears to be the
1975 615/616/617 engine manual.

The fan and motor last a long time. What usually goes first are the
brushes. They are not too tough to replace (and cheap) if you can find

I'm driving the '77 300D again this week (gotta keep it running and
all) and remembered that the heater is broken. It is the old style
with the Chrysler ACC, but everything else is working so I have
assumed that the fan itself is the problem. This leads me to three
questions:

 1) Fan is in the passenger kick panel, right? Just a few screws?
Any gotchas on taking it in and out?

 2) Where would I get such a fan? Our junkyard has a lot of 126s but
it looks like those are incompatible, and from BIMBY it looks I would
need chassis number <110886. That link is broken but I'm pretty sure
I wouldn't be willing to pay the new price. :) Could I scavenge a
motor from a 126 fan?

 3) Anything else it could be? Other elements of the climate system
seem to work, I just don't get heat.

Thanks!

I had looked in the epc and found the same 617..05 part number as before.

I'm going for torque and fuel economy, so if the revs take a small hit
that's ok with me. And a larger clutch would be nice...

The 616 flywheel is thinner than the 617 one is, so the lip to

problem though. The bolt face to crank face dim should be the same

Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a 617 manual flywheel they could measure?

2010-09-28 Thread Rolf
There are two flywheels for the GD I think, one for the NA and one for
the turbo. The NA is the same and the turbo is a larger clutch. This is
all IIRC, it has been ~2 years. I paid ~1200 for the larger flywheel
clutch and pressure plate from MB Classic Parts. Talk to Tom he is
really cool. I lost ~10? % but turbo lag is down during shifting,
engine is smoother (than 240d) and I can get up car ramps so much easier
now (or start up hills). The larger clutch is worlds different. Also
there were quite a number of different clamping pressure plates
available. The GD is the biggest flywheel you can find for the 617, the
v8's had a larger one but I think (has to be) the bellhousing on those
trans is larger as well. The FSM covers all these in detail.

You're in NJ right? Why scrounge up parts when you could have a whole car? Free

Just checked on 617 030 00 05, still available through MB.

I'm running a 240D flywheel now.  The trans has some issues.  If I'm
going to pull it all out to replace the trans, I think I'd like to get
a "correct" flywheel to do the job right.  Need to find a good trans
too.  I suspect I'll gather up the motivation to do all this before it
gets too cold!

Hey Walt,

I've got a half parted out 240D with a 4spd manual and bad engine free for the
taking. I'd like to keep the wheels but you could use them long enough to get
it onto a trailer or borrow and return would be fine too.

Idiotic circle if you ask me. If I pay for something don't sell me any ads.
Atleast try to minimize it. I know that the last mile is the most expensive
part but really the technology these days makes maintenance so low cost.

We have netflix and hulu and pretty much only watch PBS these days. Outside
of the mcneil leherer news hour there is something always on for me and the
kids. One pbs station I dont get has 24kids channel and 2 regular other
subcarriers. Really wish we got that station. I need a pretty big antenna to
get it, last vhf (uhf?) station in the area that broadcasts.

Amazingly enough instead of watching tv we actually interact with each other
and save the tv for the "good stuff".

Of course if you like reality TV shows then maybe cable is your best choice.

can sell this data to marketing companies.

I'm thinking of going back to over-the-air (OTA) TV. I'm in a fringe
area, so I'd need a roof mast if not a tower. Looks like $100 would buy
a good HD antenna, which would be offset in one month after canceling
cable.

Unknown costs for a mast or tower. Anyone have experience with this?

Here's a tower for sale close to me, is this price high, decent?

Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a 617 manual flywheel they could measure?

2010-09-28 Thread Rolf
The 300GD is available however, having used all three on the 617, the GD
is the smoothest, most torque but slowest (not sure if its the increase
clutch size or what). 240D (least smooth/torque but faster/quicker rev)
flywheels are easy to come by used. 300D can be found used if you look
in the right places. I found the 300D flywheels usually went for ~ new
pricing.

I'll scout around on the inner-tubes some more and see if I can find it.

If anyone has an easily accessible flywheel and a set of verniers,

Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a 617 manual flywheel they could measure?

2010-09-28 Thread Rolf
I am 99.9% certain that the 300d and 240d use the same part for the
flyheel face, it is the outter ring that is different. They are not one
piece flywheels. One of the guys on std probably already has said cad
drawing but its always fun to do your own. The 300gd flywheel is
remarkable different, I would use that in a truck any day of the week.
What kind of project are you doing with the truck? om617 in a ford or
the like?

You can buy them from the stealership. Atleast the GD one which a bigger
clutch than stock. Really not much of a need for it, the 617 revs so
much better with the 616 flywheel.

Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a 617 manual flywheel they could measure?

2010-09-28 Thread Walt Zarnoch
I'm creating a cad model of the flywheel to aid in making the new
adapter plate for my truck.

I'll scout around on the inner-tubes some more and see if I can find it.

Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a 617 manual flywheel they could measure?

2010-09-28 Thread Rolf
Can I ask why (making your own?)? If no one here can answer ask on
superturbodiesel.com, someone there is bound to have a 240 flywheel
sitting around. I did and sold it to somone. Only have 201/124 stuff now.

Those measurements are going to be the same on any of the w123 manuals
trans and the manual trans in the Gwagen (om61x powered cars).

Re: [MBZ] OT: OTA HDTV

2010-09-28 Thread Rolf
We've been without cable(sattelite) for a year and don't miss a minute.
Even when you pay hundreds of dollars for cable you still end up
flipping through the whole spectrum without finding anything to watch.
And most of its rubbish anyways. Mostly I got tired of paying to watch
commercials to support tv, commercials paid for by products that I
already by anyways. Idiotic circle if you ask me. If I pay for something
don't sell me any ads. Atleast try to minimize it. I know that the last
mile is the most expensive part but really the technology these days
makes maintenance so low cost.

We have netflix and hulu and pretty much only watch PBS these days.
Outside of the mcneil leherer news hour there is something always on for
me and the kids. One pbs station I dont get has 24kids channel and 2
regular other subcarriers. Really wish we got that station. I need a
pretty big antenna to get it, last vhf (uhf?) station in the area that
broadcasts.

Amazingly enough instead of watching tv we actually interact with each
other and save the tv for the "good stuff".

Of course if you like reality TV shows then maybe cable is your best choice.

I'm growing tired of forking over $$$ to the cable company every month

The last straw was that they've decided they're going to encode all the
channels, so I'm going to need another damn box and remote just to watch
TV. They say it is to enhance their service, but I suspect the real
reason is to combat piracy and to track what people are watching so they
can sell this data to marketing companies.

5 gallons Coastal DexIII/Mercon $45.99
One ACDelco PF457G oil filter$4.62
Bonus code A123$-20.00
6% tax $1.84

total $32.45
Fatwallet.com Fatcash rebate$-2.53

Final $29.92

Not bad for a 5 gallon bucket of Dexron and a Hengst (says Delco on the
box, Hengst-USA on the filter) oil filter for Mom's ecotec. Used half
the bucket to flush the ugly (possibly factory installed) crap out of
the Olds yesterday. I'm embarrassed to admit I drove that thing for two
years before finally changing brake fluid and ATF this month. Got such a
deal on the ATF that 10qts cost me less than the WIX filter and gasket
kit.

Re: [MBZ] It never ends... W123 CV boot failed

2010-09-28 Thread pm7088
Usually , when you notice a failed boot it has already contaminated the joint
with crap and it will have a short life thereafter. Dr. Booth recommended used
parts over rebuilt as the failure rate on factory joints is very low.

Allan, I know the split boots get bad mouthed by some, but I have used one
on a VW and one on a Camry, both lased many miles and were still good when I
sold the cars.

I installed mine on the car with success. It would be a piece of cake with
the axle off the car.

If you ever see one and see how it goes together, I think you will be
impressed.

I assume they are still available.

A little town (Mars Hill) in SC got nuked back when. Fortunately it did

Don't know about 1945, but ten years later people knew what they were
carrying.
You know those island runways where a successful landing meant all you
can see is water in front of you and an unsuccessful landing is one
where all you can see is water above you? A crew member would stand at
a door with some critical bomb part (triggers?) ready to chuck them
onto the runway if it looked like the plane was going swimming. Can't
leave a plane in the ocean with all the parts of nuke bombs on board.

I bet it's nowhere near as much as a front (exhaust) pipe for a 1999 w210.025...

It's rotted out only at the inside of the first 90, with barely any rust
anywhere else. I guess the aluminization was thin there...

I'll see about piecing in a (new) 90...

I guess I could also get ticked and have a straight pipe fabbed for it... Maybe
2.5" or so?

Should I mount a #10 can at the tailpipe? ;)

I suspect that the turbo does a little muffling of the exhaust...
