[MBZ] OT buying music these days, CD,s MP3 etc
OK so whats the deal with buying music these days? Can you not buy cds anymore? I see a lot of albums of old music I would like to buy that are now in the itunes store for download but you dont see very many cds you can buy. In fact, I dont think they even have CD stores in the malls anymore. So what about this downloading of music? I have always thought that mp3s did not have the same quality as a music cd. True or false? If you do download an album from itunes onto your computer can you also download it to your ipod, or can it only reside in one place at a time? Once you download it can you burn it to a cd? I am just worried about the quality. A lot of the music I may be interested in would be more instrumental or classical type stuff and I want to be able to hear all the details if you know what I mean. I would just prefer to buy a CD so I can have the cover art and so forth. Truth be told I would rather have a good old fashioned LP but whatever. Re: [MBZ] OT buying music these days, CD,s MP3 etc
When music is compressed for for MP3s and such, they strip away some of the details, but to most human ears, they never notice or miss it. You can still get CDs, but brick and mortar places are closing all the time. There are however lots of places that sell used CDs, as well as used LPs. There are those who are loyal audiophiles who swear LPs are better than CDs. Personally, I like LPs too, and I find them a bit warmer than CDs, even though there is some popping and hissing at times. There are a few places that are reissuing LPs, as there seems to be a resurgence in LP interest. You might also try garage sales, and church auctions. Often, you can pick up whole collections that people just want to get rid of for next to nothing (often $2-3) for the lot. And the bonus as you say, a nice LP cover to hold and read while listening. Re: [MBZ] OT buying music these days, CD,s MP3 etc
Just order CDs off Amazon, no tax and I think if you get a certain amount there is no shipping fee, or minimal. Or like someone said, used CD stores or CL or yard sales or whatever. I think there is another site, CDNow or something like that? MP3s are much less quality than a CD (you might not really notice, but it is), but if you rip it to a music player or your computer it generally goes into some compressed/lossy format (MP3 etc.) though you can do it directly. Once in iTunes it is on your computer and pod, I think you can put stuff on more than one computer but I have not tried that. Have not tried to burn to a CD (would be an MP3 CD or something like that, not sure it would play on all players though some car players will). AppleTV is interesting in that you can connect it to your computer on the network (wired or wireless) and stream your iTunes to your receiver you have it hooked to, or watch vids on your TV it is hooked to, that's kinda fun. You should also check out LastFM and Pandora and such, you put in your kind of music or artist or band, and it just starts playing stuff like your own personal radio station, that kind of music you specify. It used to work on the iPod and I would plug that into the receiver and listen to streaming stuff but I think now they make you pay for ipod streaming. --R On 4/23/2011 11:32 AM, Kaleb C. As far as the downloading goes, some of these I see are pretty cheap, like 5-6 bucks for an album. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT buying music these days, CD,s MP3 etc
Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: I have always thought that mp3s did not have the same quality as a music cd. True or false? True. The file is smaller because large portions have been thrown away. MP3 is patent encumbered. The patent covers the calculation of what can be thrown away without the listener noticing. There are different levels of MP3, usually referenced by bitrate. With the new(er) variable bit rate (where the bitrate chances depending on the content) the numbers are not as predictable. Never the less, it usually takes sharp ears and good gear to hear the difference between uncompressed (.wav, or what's on a CD) from a 256 kb/s MP3. 128 kb/s is pretty common and most people in most situations won't notice anything is missing. At 56 kb/s, the loss is noticable - but a lot of people won't care. Once it has been compressed, the information is lost. Turning it back into a .wav does _not_ recover the lost data. If you do download an album from itunes onto your computer can you also download it to your ipod, or can it only reside in one place at a time? Apple uses AAC, which is for practical purposes is just an alternative to MP3. Different patent, license - same uses and problems. iTunes is ornery about copies and such. I believe computer and iPod are fine. But woe to you if you want to move them to a new harddrive or new computer! Once you download it can you burn it to a cd? I am just worried about the quality. iTunes music can have artificial restrictions. Otherwise, yes. MP3, AAC, OGG, FLAC, etc. can all be converted to WAV to be burned to a CD - but the quality will _not_ improve when you do. A lot of the music I may be interested in would be more instrumental or classical type stuff and I want to be able to hear all the details if you know what I mean. Instrumental detail is not what is missing from over-compressed music. Trying to use words to describe sound is always weak... But I would describe the difference as tonal polish The subtle differnce between a good electronic piano and a real piano can be lost. A voice might not sound quite as smooth. Or the music can loose depth and begin sounding flat (not like out of tune flat - a dimensionless kind of flat) Again, all this loss increases as the bitrate goes down. A file encoded at 256 kb/s is really very good sounding. Less than 128 kb/s is were it usually becomes obvious. And some people and listening situations don't demand more. Background music is often fine at much less than 128 kb/s. Crank it up and _listen_ and the shortcoming become noticable. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Neil went on his 2-3 year exodus after the death of his wife from cancer. Shortly (around 10 months) before his wife passed, his daughter was killed in a car accident. He considered himself retired after his wife's death, and went on a 2-3 year sabbatical, covering over 55,000 miles throughout North and South America on his motorcycle. This is covered in detail in Rush's latest DVD on the history of the band. 'Nother ATTABOY! Wilton - Original Message - From: Jaime Kopchinski jaime...@gmail.com To: mercedes Mailing List mercedes@okiebenz.com; Banned List ban...@okiebenz.com Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2011 4:40 PM Subject: [MBZ] Climate control work Hi Guys, An update to the work i've been doing on the climate control in my '79 450SLC 5.0. So, thanks to some great guys on the list here, I was able to obtain enough parts to experiment as well as repair my servo Here is what I have learned: The amplifier, when working, is weak. It can't take the load of a gummed up servo very well, especially the parking circuit. I had my servo operating just fine with 12V applied directly to the motor, but wouldn't move with the amplifier connected. So I took apart the servo (again) and rebuilt the gearbox. Cleaned out all the old grease and re-greased everything. I found that you can connect the servo motor to the car with the servo disassembled and control the servo using the feedback potentiometer. This allows you to test the amplifier to see if its working properly as well as watch the gearbox operate with the real voltage applied by the amplifier. The circuit has power with just the key on, so its not necessary to start the engine or to have vacuum. Once I was satisfied that the servo motor and gear box operated smoothly outside of its housing, I carefully reassembled the servo. The little washer-like pieces that go over the heater valve must be carefully installed! If they interfere with the keying of the water valve or gearing, the assembly will not seat completely and bind up when screwed down! Getting everything synchronized is very important, but not difficult. If you run the motor to its stop where the water valve would have been spun fully clockwise, you can then turn the valve itself clockwise by hand until it stops (or nearly stops). Once everything is back together, when you plug in the power connector the to the servo it should park. If it doesn't, something is binding up (start over!). Once parked, set the feedback potentiometer to 1.4kohms and install. Now, everything is synced up. I put a little mark on the top of the feedback potentiometer to monitor the position of the servo when the car is running and to ensure it parks. I just ran it though full heat, full cool, and to park several times and it worked well. Hopefully, it continues to work! Some other things to note: -I bought a brand new amp and its dead. I'm not sure if its always been dead or I killed it. But both amps I have from 1979 still work identical to each other. -You can plug in the power connector the the servo backwards and it won't be immediately obvious under that mess of vacuum lines. Be careful! -If the end of the black wiping arm that makes all the electrical connections breaks, you need to replace or repair it. It looks like it will still work, but its position is just off enough to short out the amp via the parking circuit. -The parking circuit moves the servo slower than it moves under normal operation. I don't know if this is due to the design of the amp or if both of mine are weak. I fear that the servo won't park one day and just sit there cooking. Thanks to everyone for reading and your previous comments. Re: [MBZ] OT: We Be Slammin'
Sound on house power, lighting on generators. Amazingly enough, the old (now defunct) Market Square Area only had 1600 amp 3 phase house power. After you subtract the house loads, there was around 400 amps left for the talent. Woefully inadequate for the large arena shows that started up in the late 70s. We would bring a 300kW Cummins set on a Landoll lowboy with a 300 gallon fuel tank. It got parked on Market Street below the arena. They core drilled a hole through the floor of the arena where we ran the cables to the distribution boxes backstage. Show up, park the truck, find the road manager, get paid, sit back while the electricians ran the cables (union facility) and flip the switch for the sound check and later for the show itself. Otherwise it was down time wandering around backstage, eating and staying out of the way of the crew. Did a lot of shows there, and at the Clay Courts on the IUPUI campus in the summertime. Not a bad deal for part time work that paid cash and gained one access to backstage and the buffet for the crew. Dan are you with the band? Yes, and it only floods here once every 500 years where we are building these arenas, blah Blah blah. I must be pretty old. I've lived through at least 3 500 year floods. and maybe a 1000 year flood. I guess that makes me somewhere between 1500 and 2500 years old. The buildings that would never flood... have been flooded 3 or 4 times. I have no idea how wide this tornado was, but it was a monster and did a lot of damage. As I said, it was so big around that the circular motion was nearly imperceptible, and it ~60 Mph forward speed was nearly imperceptible. One mile wide or 5 or 10, it was a monster. My point is that whatever humans do, the powers of nature, as created by God, are more powerful, and will not be defined. Earthquakes bigger than possible in japan, causing damage beyond the design of reactors; Tsunamis way larger than expected, or barely perceptible when predicted to be large; Unbelievable floods occurring every 5, 10 or 20 years, when the engineers say they can't happen more often than once in 500 or 1000 years. It is all normal. As Dr. Deming said, be careful not to confuse normal variation with random variation. Happy Easter! x The Enhanced Fujita scale sets an EF4 tornado at approx 400-900 meters wide. nbsp;An EF5 is approx 1100m +, or about 3/4mi. nbsp;A tornado wider than a mile is extremely rare and I would venture to say that 5mi wide tornados are unheard of and maybe physically impossible. Perhaps 20 to 100 times wider than tall. Nothing at all like a TV tornado. First everyone in the building went into the johns, then after 15-20 minutes that got boring and people started drifting out to watch the storm. if you picked a landmark and watched for a minute, you could see that it was moving, but because it was so huge, the movement at 60-70 MPH from west to east was barely perceptible. gt;Friend at lunch Monday said he saw area of tornado damage near Dunn gt;on Sunday 5 miles wide.
