Re: [MBZ] 17 OM603 head vs camshaft, injectors

2011-06-29 Thread Dieselhead
I am guessing the cams are interchangeable. You will have to measure
the bearing diameters to be sure. Since the cap of the hydraulic
comp. rotates, I don't think you have to keep the shaft matched to
the hyd. comp.

As for the rust. The answer to that question is a visual inspection.
polish the cam lobes. if it is still rough, it will likely wear the
hyd. comp. and the cam lobe. If it is smooth enough so that the oil
will provide a cushion for the surfaces as designed, then the cam is
ok.

I would guess the FSM or another document will show what the
difference is between the 2 cams. It could just be a different
manufacturer, or process, with the same dimensions.

Further reading of the FSM says keep the lifters in their original holes,
unless replacing. OK - can do, I marked them as I pulled them out.

No one has an opinion on the camshaft question? I guessing that I need to
keep the #11 with the #17 head, but I'm going to have to deal with that
corrosion.

No rocker arms here, hydraulic compensators. Cams on the camshaft push
directly on the hydraulic compensators (aka lifters). Do I need to keep the
lifters with their head, and in the original hole? I'm not planning on
doing that. One of the lifters from the "new" head looks very new compared
to the others, surprise surprise it was installed at #1 cylinder.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Hanging Doors

2011-06-29 Thread G Mann
If you have a router, pick up a hinge guide for it. The hinge guide I have
is door length and will accept 3 or 4 hinge template guides [depending on
your choice of hinge layout].

With it, I set the door in the opening, shim the bottom clearance [or cut
the door to length, then shim bottom clearance] pencil mark the existing
hinge location [if it's a replacement door into an existing frame]. Then
clamp the handy dandy hinge guide in place and set/locate the individual
hinge template guides to their respective locations. With the router set to
depth and the right kind of bit, it takes only seconds per hinge location to
make perfect hinges. Well worth the investment.

This guide came from Home Depot because they were handy and I was in a
hurry, but I'm there are sure better / cheaper deals can be found. It also
works on casements if you are making full replacements and there are
template cutout guides for entry door thickness as well as interior door
thickness. A feature you might want to keep in mind.

Another handy tool to have is a little drill guide that has a taper that
just fits the screw hole in the hinge plate. It lets you predrill the hinge
screw holes and makes hinge mounting easy, clean, and most importantly tight
and accurate. Again, well worth the investment. No crooked screws that
later fail the door mount.

Enjoy your new life as a carpenter, after the first two or so, it stops
being a PIA and becomes welll work...

I recommend using pre hung doors. It seems that many interior doors though
are 32" are actually 31 3/4" so when you buy a slab door it will be the full
32" which you will need to rip the door also. With pre-hung you pull the
casing sawzall the nails holding the door in and then install the new
pre-hung. I know it seems like it would take longer though it won't.

Yep, what he said. there is also a single mortise guide, but it is a
bit fiddly to line up each time with the existing hinge locations. It
is cheaper though, but for doing 10 doors it is worth the addl cost for
the full-length one. Then you can sell it to me!

[MBZ] Another warning about working under lifted vehicles

From the local paper: "INDIANAPOLIS — A 43-year-old Decatur Township
man, Kirk Key, was killed Saturday evening when the truck he was working
on fell off its blocks and crushed him."

From the story it sounds like he was a professional mechanic who was
working alone in his shop, though the use of "blocks" if that's what
they really were sounds suspicious. Never support a vehicle with
"cinder blocks" or bricks.

Just another reminder, before crawling under your car, be extra cautious
that your stands are in good order, properly placed, and supporting the
vehicle solidly.

Unfortunately, such death by crushing happens several times each year. The
failure point of a concrete block is about 600 lbs. and failure is abrupt,
so you get little time to crawl out to safety. Bottom line, DO NOT USE
THEM.

Very few people ever recover from crush injury. Plan ahead, block and chock
carefully. Please !!!

Rule #1: Never place a body part you want to keep between the machine you
are working on and another object.

We all makes our choices and takes our chances. I can't afford a
lift, so I work under cars using multiple redundant safety
systems---high-quality jackstands, scrap wood, wheels, a cell phone at

How quickly do you plan to do this?

I replaced all of our interior doors a few years ago. We ordered in the
pressed masonite doors that look like real raised panel doors. Had to
order them because we wanted solid core rather than hollow core doors.
Heavy to work with but much nicer in the long run and not much more
expensive.

I made my own router templates and they are still in the basement. I can
take a couple of photos and post them if you are not planning to do this
today.

I made separate ones for the hinge and the latch plate.

We did not change the jambs so I made them fit the existing measurements
of the house but also added a third hinge as the original doors were
hollow core and only had two hinges.

Hmmm. Decatur Township

I wonder where in Decatur Township?

That is a somewhat "coarse" area demographically. Knowing this, I would
probably take the term "blocks" used in the story literally.

If we could just "adjust" things a bit. Here in Manitoba, Saskatchewan

time in more than 100 years. If we could just slide a bit of that water
down to the fire zone, all would be well in both places.

PS - Here in Manitoba, we normally worry about flooding of the Red River
flowing north into Lake Winnipeg. This year, that closed the main north

Now, we are getting massive flooding from the west on othe rivers like

Not likely, The "media" in the USA is simply the ministry of
propaganda. If they can't twist a story to discredit Americans or
promote a marxist position, there is no report.

Very few media outlets have an actual reporter. They have "news"
readers that read the email/fax from the party HQ and "approved"
sources.

Best info usually comes from outside the borders of the US.

Remember how we were told people in the dome in nawlins were
murdering and raping etc. THere are many other examples, like last
year's "oil all over the beaches of the gulf" when very little oil
ever reached a shore.

Yes, the heater fans work on both cars, according to the seller. The
running car has lots of little problems like a beaten-up body, rough
interior, stripped window cranks, worn pads and rotors, and the squeaking
belt problems. The possible donor car has the better body and interior plus
new pads and rotors, and the window cranks. I inquired when they first went
up for $1000, but I really want an automatic since my potential drivers
can't drive manny. The running car has a manny tranny, so I thought of the
possibility of swapping out the good engine for the auto car.

Anyway I haven't seen an Amarok, the one I mentioned before is
