Re: [MBZ] 928
IMO the reason for low re-sale pricing for 928s is the _/*very */_expensive repair costs for a very complex engine that requires specialized knowledge (i am told). Along with the engine there are ancillary systems that can be difficult to maintain. David is right about the 928 beubg called the ultimate GT car for covering vast distances quickly in comfort - I'd love to have one if I had a good source for parts LarryT 74 911 On 5/28/2012 9:44 PM, David Kristin Gilmore wrote: At 01:09 AM 5/28/2012, Alex wrote: Why all the disdain among Porsche fans for the 928? Yet the things now are routinely seen for sale for under $5000, sometimes way under, for an early example. None of the other watercooled cars--944, 924S, even the 924-- goes that cheap. The couple of 928s I drove felt heavy and tank like compared to the 924S I was driving at the time. I have been told that is because I was not going fast enough - that the 928 was designed for 100+ mph on the German freeways. They say the last of them, the GTS model of early 90s, is the one to have. The 928 shape suggests a shark to its fans, a toad to its critics. I think it was just too big a chew for the 911 people who were fixated on the air cooled rear engine. And Porsche never promoted the 928 for racing which might have given it more of a following. And humbled some 911s. If I wanted performance I would go for a 944 turbo. Otherwise a 968. My poor old normally aspirated engine has to work hard to run highway speeds. It does not appear to mind doing so but by current standards, it is not as fuel efficient as many others. In 1976, most North American cars were not making anywhere near 20+ mpg and diesel was much less expensive. It was a true economy car then. Time has passed it by to a great extent. My wife's Honda Accord is about the same size when parked next to it in the garage and has more power and makes better mileage and is quieter- at least in terms of engine noise. I don't think that is true of chassis noise etc. I am truly amazed at how well the old car rides and handles on those skinny tires. Re: [MBZ] Where to mount a cup holder?
No, not quite that high. anything in the passenger side holder (as opposed to the narrow deep well that it goes into, which is just perfect for a can) will hit right about the AC controls, and run into them. You'll also get the radio buttons, and it will definitely douse the window switches and the shifter. Ain't them things got those winders that open up? My buddy and I flew airplanes, I flew Pipers (fixed windows in the doors) and he flew Cessna 150s, which had windows hinged at the top you could open for some breeze. We would go out flying low and slow and holler at people on the ground, it was funny to watch them as they had no idea where the sound was coming from. There was a golf course on final to the main runway at FWA, we would holler at the golfers as they were trying to take shots. It was all totally hilarious! --R On 5/29/12 12:26 PM, WILTON wrote: 'May not be able to help my barfing, either. ;) BTW, spring of '75, I flew daughter on a '64 Cessna 182 from Soo, MI, to Greenville, NC, (East Caro. Re: [MBZ] Fleece
With the Vee engines anyway, the fleece are the $15 filters that are good for 10,000 miles. The regular $10 filters I don't believe are supposed to run all the way until the FSS tells you it's time for an oil change... The fleece filters are required for extended oil changes whereas the paper versions (interchangeable) are for 5K changes. I had a few paper filters left over from my C320 which I used up in the C300 because I change it's M1 0W40 at 5K anyway. I buy my fleece filters at far less than $15. Re: [MBZ] Fashionistas for the right seat of our Mercedes
I took a freind up in a Citabria for some light aerobatics between classes one day. He did fine until I noticed that the altimeter was no longer working, and I didn't know just how high we were after exit from a spin. As i started a gentle letdown, he opened the side window and barfed outside. unfortunately, it all blew back in behind him. We spent two hours cleaning up that airplane. The owners revoked my rental priviledges until one of them needed a tow (glider) one day, and I was the only one on the airport checked out to do tows. I said: No informed person would buy this car at any price. ...Well, would you say that if this particular example didn't seem to have been tastelessly customized? That is only part of it. Adding that ugly doghouse and whatever else was done eliminates most buyers but it does drive the price down to nearly nothing. The early 928 with it's Mercedes-sourced 3-speed automatic was plenty troublesome because of the electrics and electronics which Porsche had little experience with. The twin-disc clutch has already been discussed. My friends GR and his wife bought a new '79 automatic (about 28 grand) and it's been their Concours car ever since. It's Metallic blue and is perfectly preserved but has been driven coast-to-coast and down to California a time or two. It had early valve train problems which were finally warrantied after a long debate since in those days Porsche blamed everything on the owner. Now it just runs and runs, but not often. Would you say the same of a 911 of the same year, or a 924? Apples and oranges. A '79 911SC is still a desirable car and can bring prices in the middle teens if in decent shape. And considering that these were about 20K when new, that's not bad. The 3-liter engine is well known as a long-lived engine with over 200K without repairs being not uncommon. Unlike the previous series 2.7 (not the RS) which had a few design faults including pulling case bolts. Probably all of those have had major overhauls and updates long ago. What a buyer needs to realize these days that a complete re-do on a 911 engine can easily top 15 grand. That's the air-cooled models but the water-cooled engines cost a bit less but are often times are just replaced. When the 996 came out many engines were replaced under warranty because of oil leaks from the rear main crankshaft seal. That little defect took years to defeat and the only real fix is a mod kit produced by an independent shop. The end of the crank is not directly supported by a bearing and when the crank starts to whip it's too late so these kits are being installed all over the country. Discussing these engines would take a long time. The new D.I. engine in the 911, now 991, and the Boxsters has eliminated about 30% of the internal parts including the intermediate shaft which used to drive the oil pump. Now, like the newest MB engines, an electric variable speed oil pump is used so a lot of hp is saved there plus eliminating parts to fail. The last of the run, the GTS, was expensive and still is but is comparatively rare. In fact just last Saturday my Porsche Club Region had it's first Concours of 2012 and a very nice 928GTS was entered in my class, Preservation. My 944 won the class handily, one reason being my friend AC's '71 911S has moved into Restoration class and our two cars are about equal. When the Blue '79 928 shows up then it's a tossup. But, it didn't. As to the '79 924, well.. It was an underpowered sparsely equipped 4-cylinder 4-speed with a hobby-horse ride. It was cheapish but you didn't get much. The 240Z was really a better car for about the same price. The 924 Turbo was faster but had problems with the turbo system which required removing the entire exhaust system to repair it. And it's performance just about equalled my normally aspirated 944 which in turn is no match for the 944 Turbo which is still a rocket ship. But, one had to realize that repairs are still geared to a $50K car even though runouts can be bought cheap, only to melt your VISA card later on. Why all the disdain among Porsche fans for the 928? This is a car that period reviews called the best GT ever, indescribably better than its competition. Yet the things now are routinely seen for sale for under $5000, sometimes way under, for an early example. None of the other watercooled cars--944, 924S, even the 924-- goes that cheap. At that time, what was it's competition? Not the SL which was a cruiser and made no pretensions at being a sports car. Nothing Italian, of course. Buying an old 928 now might be like buying an old boat. Looks great but nothing has been maintained and she's about to go to the bottom. On the other hand, I know two other owners of early cars which have been turned into track cars (), both 5-speeds and they are fast and reliable enough but not without the occasional fix. But, it takes a good income to keep a car like this up to snuff and use it vigorously. One of these guys is my now retired Opthalmologist and the other an Alaska Airlines Captain who also owns a restored 356 Speedster and a 997S. .Even the 914 which used to be the black sheep of the Porsche family now gets more respect. I don't get it Well now just minute
Re: [MBZ] Selectric
...Anyway, I turned it on and it just sort of chattered and didn't really respond to the keyboard. I've read that they can do this after sitting for a while, but this one didn't seem to settle down. Is there a common adjustment or repair or cleaning that can resolve this? I suppose this is a correcting Selectric II. I bought one last year for my then 98 year old Mom who needed to create some pages for a loose leaf notebook. I found one Craigslist and the price was to be $75. When I arrived at the sellers home (looked like $900 K to me) he had it on the bench and said it had stopped running and he couldn't figure out why. Turned out he bought used Selectrics and refurbished them as a hobby. Finally he dropped the price to $25 and I took it home, figuring I could maybe get it repaired. A friend employed an ex-typewriter repairman (had his own shop which closed) and knew all about Selectrics. The three day turnaround turned into ten days and when I call he said it was unrepairable. He said there very close tolerances could only be lubricated by a special lube which had been sold by IBM back in the day. It would start up but after about 15 minutes would freeze up. His diagnosis was that somebody had sprayed the guts of it with a lubricant (cannot remember the name but know it) that once dried cannot be removed by anything in the civilized world. I looked at the manufacturer's website and sure enough it boasted that the stuff was impervious to anything. So, the inside of the machine was permanently gummed up and had perhaps thirty minute duty cycles separated by cool down periods. Knowing all this, it has worked fine. The Selectric is still considered to be the best typewriter ever built and there are stiil things you just can't do on a word processor. Don't spray anything inside the thing. Re: [MBZ] 928
Nice overview! BTW, I agree that putting a water cooled engine in the 911 is blasphemous.
