[MBZ] The dead have risen!!!!!

2012-08-07 Thread clay monroe
My Indy is GOD

Frosch suffered a massive death due to idiot owner who made the wire harness go
up in smoke. Indy got the car last week and had to order the harness from the
Fatherland. Black Forest Elves grabbed Rumplestiltskin and have him weave the
thing for Mercedes.

I got a call late this afternoon that he needs the lift for other work. He
pushed through today and got her back running well. Sort of fried more than we
had thought. I had the alternator from Gump that got rebuilt, so he installed
that.It has not that same pin out location as what was destroyed in Frosch.
We had to get a new battery as well. A few toasted wires not in the harness
need attention. Temp gauge is pegged, so that wire needs attention. Cooked
some of the vac lines, and I will need to chase that down. Tach used to be
pegged out, but now does not register.

Indy told me he had to quit chasing gremlins, or he would needlessly rack up a
huge bill. As it was, idiot tax was only $1200. I am going to reduce my under
hood wrenching to less destructive tasks. Hood pad, fluid and filters,
spiffing up the engine bay. Real wrenching will get sent to the shop. Dang
thermostat should have been a $100 task, including parts. I had the same poor
performance wrenching with Gump, and ended up paying $1k's to remedy the
stupidity I subjected her to.Clutch, water pump, brakes, starter and
alternator, oil pump, valves. That darn Gump was dirt cheap to get, but
rectifying the screw ups I subjected her to cost me thousands .

I have a few days to wash and wax to get her ready for the local show and shine
this weekend

Bugs The slime gunks up the fuel gauge works. It is also the
leading cause of IP failures. It does not kill the IP suddenly, but
it is a slow death.

No real idea why but the orange low fuel light did not come on that
time. It normally did prior to that and it has since but that time
it did not and I assume I just ran it out of fuel.

They have decision-making problems administratively: requests tend to show
up at the last minute; no one knows how budget will be allotted, if at all;
adjunct and associate professors don't know whether they will have classes
more than a week or two in advance; getting money for lab repairs and
materials requires many hours of nonsense; things like keys and offices are
not logically allocated. There are lots of punitive programs, but
little/nothing in the way of recognition of excellence. There is an
expectation, at least in the sciences, that substantive research is being
done, but it's impossible to get lab time or equipment from the school.
Very few of the administrators will take responsibility for anything, no
matter how trivial. And so on.

Same kinds of issues you'd see in a small company, except with the
administrative overhead of something in the Fortune 100. Not sure how the
military compares.

On the other hand, several professors have (independently) said that the
students are amazing - usually not top tier academically, often holding
down a job or two, and many have child care issues and the like, but that a
higher-than-common proportion are really serious about college. There are
a lot of first-generation attendees whose parents have worked at menial
jobs for 20+ years, scrimping on everything so that their kid could have a
shot at a skilled* job. College is sold as this amazing possibility that
their friends and parents never had, and so there's less of the wasting
time and money - even as teenagers they know they don't want to blow their
one shot. You still have the crazy party kids but it seems much less
common than at the whiter schools where my siblings-in-law went.

Anyway that's my take based on what I've been told, so at best second hand.
:) All but one of the profs I know from NCCU are still there, so despite
day-to-day frustrations I suppose you can survive.

Best,
Tim

* I was invited to attend a career seminar, and someone else talked about
being a lab tech and that the jobs "started at $38,000 right out of
college". The kids' mouths dropped like that was the biggest sum in the
world... It was a very humbling experience.

SWMBO is whiter than me, and just graduated (June) from NC Central. She
had merit scholarships throughout and was the Dean's something-or- other at
graduation. They are HBCUs, that is historically black colleges and
universities; nowadays it is self segregation and tradition that makes
proportions different.

I know a lot of the professors there, and the proportion of
white/black/immigrant/international is roughly the same as what I
experienced at NC State 15 years ago. Not so sure about administrators but
there couldn't have been a lot of racial screening of profs, at least. (Oh,
and they all hate working there. Students are great and fairly motivated
but it seems to be a horrible place to work.)

Will need fresh under strapping to hold them in place for your seats.

2012-08-07 Thread Gerry Archer

In 1946 we moved to Tampa from Indiana and I immediately needed an after
school job. Hundreds of thousands of WW-2 veterans had taken what few jobs
there were and there didn't seem to be any for a 16 year old with no
references.
I set out walking and started asking for a job at every business I came to.
After covering Interbay, Palma Ceia, and Hyde Park, I started on Tampas
downtown section which had many businesses.
One of the last places I asked before heading for Seminole Heights and Ybor
City was the Tampa Tribune which hired me as a copy boy; six hours per
evening seven days per week, for a salary of $17 per week. With two good
fishermen in the family who could catch snook off Davis Island bridge nearly
any time they wanted to, we lived on fish, potatoes, and a few vegetables
that first year in Tampa. Money was nevertheless still in short supply.
The family members took up a collection so I could rent a $10 gown and
mortar board and attend graduation at Plant High School.

The same general process might be successful for you by sending off
personalized copies of a standard application you create which answers every
possible question you might be asked in a personal interview. I would point
out in the letter that I am sending this application to several hundred

I am interested in replies only from those who might seriously be interested

[MBZ] Benefits of a Benz

2012-08-07 Thread Rich Thomas
So there is this big golf thing going on over at Kiawah this week, which
is just down the road a bit. PGA something or other. I have some
disused tickees so decided to go over this morning to see what all the
fuss is about. MBUSA is a big sponsor of the games. The parking area
has free parking for MBs, so I rolled in there right past the gate and
the $20 (!!!) toll collector, got directed to the MB parking area right
next to the bus stop. The 84 SD looked pretty good amongst all the
newer iron, though for some reason there was a Suburban parked next to
me and then a Jaguar X pulled up. hmmm. And I saw this motorcycle,
might have been a BMW, parked next to an ML. Now the parking area is
out in old tomato fields, and it has been raining, and rained this
morning more, so I was thinking that motorcycle next to that ML was
gonna push that kickstand right down into the muck and end up a bookend
on the ML...

There were actually not that many Benzes in the MB area though, kinda
interesting, one E63 was there, in black, looked nice. Today was just a
practice day, the main festivities are Th on, so maybe there will be more.

At the golf park they had a big MB tent set up with about 6 or 7 cars in
there, including this one that looked a lot like a CLS but more curvy,
it was called a Styling Something, had a 4cyl engine and some kind of
hybrid thing I think. The description was a bit vague.. It was kinda
weird, the interior had this floor kinda built across it just below the
bottom of the windows so you could not see the whole interior. There
was only one demo babe in there, and she was not really a demo dolly,
looked more like some college girl volunteering in the space. One would
think they would be targeting the golf geezers, some hot demo dollies
would be the order of the day. Maybe some tall German blondes in tight
leather outfits encouraging you to buy one... oops, where was I?

Oh yeah... They also had this laptop with a vidcam set up you could
make a video they would turn into a little flip book. I did not do
that, though the little flip book was kinda neat but doing a stupid
human trick to make it was kinda weird. There was a racing helmet and
some golf clubs you could do something with. They had two mini-golf
setups in there where you could get your putter analyzed. Or maybe it
was putting. Whatever, I don't know much about golf. It was two guys
doing the analyzing, I did not want them around my putter so did not
avail myself of that function. Had they been hot babes, maybe...

The MB aspect was kinda lame, though they did have a C63 in there, all
tarted up in some sort of racing look, with some stickers and such. It
looked pretty stock though, so not sure what that was about. No S
class, no diesels.

OK back to workies...

I used sheepskins in Gump. Tex had see better days and was black. On the rare
sunny day, those seats would scorch your flesh. Cold days were made better
with skins. On Frosch, the skins she had were allowing the leather to over age
and I have not put them on again. Trying to get the leather to be supple again.
Spring cleaning and stripping off skins would let you care for the leather at
least once a year.

2012-08-07 Thread Randy Bennell

Or they ran it out of fuel.

I did that. I drove into my garage and stopped the engine. A couple of
days later, I went to use it and it would not go. Cranked and cranked.

Changed the glow plugs etc but it still would not go.

Finally poured 5 gallon can of diesel into it and with a bit of cranking
it fired up.

No real idea why but the orange low fuel light did not come on that
time. It normally did prior to that and it has since but that time it
did not and I assume I just ran it out of fuel.

But it seems that not all Tex is created equal. The seats in my 300SD
seem to have a thinner cover, and they are completely falling apart in
front. The rear seat is still nice, but obviously rear seats tend to
get much less use.

I'm thinking of going with sheepskins in front just to cover it up.

TEX does have a much longer half life than leather. The cow hide cracks and

are old and cracking. Annual care has not been able to reverse, but only
marginally slow the damage. And with the swap in of a passenger seat with more

Probably a fair amount of truth to this statement. They may have
interviewed you to prove they are not discriminating against older
applicants.
Your best bet may be to look for contract positions and then try to wow
them with your performance so they want to keep you around and offer you
more contract time.

Sadly, you are not likely to get hired on at age 62. I would guess that
most places are wishing they could get their more senior people to
retire so they could bring in some young blood.

From an earlier post I remember you said you are 62. They won't
say so but that counts against you when being considered for a

I have direct negative experience.

In a fit of idiocy I ordered two outdoor car covers from him, one for my 108
and the other for the SLC. When they finally arrived, the 108 cover was a dusty
20-year-old cotton indoor cover, and the SLC cover didn't fit because it was
actually a 129SL cover that had already been returned once before by someone
else.

It took months of back and forth, and eventually the threat of going VERY
public on the forums, to make him fix it. And of course according to him it was
all my fault. His attitude was the worst part. I should have filed a BBB
complaint or something.

If he can't handle a car cover, imagine what could arise with an engine!

I did find a decent engine by looking for just and engine. That was after
the original engine I located was dropped on our driveway in Austin, TX,
in August, 1999. The yard in Dallas from which I got the second engine
has since changed hands and, I understand, is not a good.

bugs? Dallas is a hot environment where the nasty bugs like to
grow. I'd not be afraid of it. Could just be the battery went bad.
They don't say it cranks.

Yeah looks tidy, no major cracks in the dash, steering wheel looks
consistent with the claimed mileage but why won't it start?

Glowplugs? Sticky shut off valve?
Maybe needs a squirt of WD40 down it's throat?
Spose if it turns over the timing chain should be OK?

You should be able to do much better at
car-part.com and deal directly with the junkyard
with the engine. Adsit has a reputation of
being overpriced and poor service.

For new stuff, call Rusty. 800 741 5252

Run to Rusty. He makes mistakes, but he tries to
fix them. He's only done Mercedes parts for 36
years, just a baby. Plus he has a family to
feed, keep him in mind.
