you will just need to inspect everything for damage and replace as
necessary. a noisy bearing should be replaced, but be on the alert for
something other than the bearing. play at 3 and 9 o'clock is most often
steering linkage as Jaime indicated. look for steering linkage hopping up
and down when you push and pull. a small amount of play at 12 and 6 is
acceptable with the tire mounted, but you'll want to look at the ball
joints. loose ball joints can be felt in the steering. if grease or water
got on the spindle it can wear out the surface between it and the bearing
and the entire spindle may be need to be replaced.

Re: [MBZ] W123 wheel

2012-11-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Tim,
I've found that some seals you buy on the aftermarket are just wrong... if
the one you removed is thicker than then one you installed,
its likely wrong. The larger seals actually have two sealing surfaces and
meet the spindle in the right places. The thinner seals have one and end
up being installed too deep into the hub and don't meet the spindle
resulting in no seal.

You can see what the correct seal looks here:
http://www.autohausaz.com/secure/PartImages/1163300051A.jpg

If you didn't go very far, you might be able to just pop in the new seals
without having to repack or replace the bearings. But if you already hear
noise, its too late.

If you have wheel shake left and right but not up and down, then you have
play in the steering linkage. Most common point is the idler arm bushings
on the driver's side. If you look and feel around carefully while you move
a wheel left and right, you'll find the play. Its also possible you have
play in the tie rods or center link.

Don't worry about the grease... if you wiped off most of it, then it
probably burned off the first time you stopped from any reasonable speed.

Good luck,
Jaime

Thanks,

I cannot see how the seal could cause much of an issue unless it is
leaking grease out onto the brake rotor and that should be visible if so.

If you get grease on a rotor I would suggest you wipe it off and then
wash it down with brake cleaner.

I assume when you say the seal was thinner, that you mean in depth. If
so, again I cannot see where that should be a big issue. If you drove it
in further than the old one, then it might ride on a different spot on
the spindle and might not last as long etc but the seal is not going to
make the wheel wobble etc.

I would think you have other issues of some sort.

You might want to check the bearing setup again with your dial indicator
to make sure it has not loosened up.

Apart from that, I think I would be prying and wiggling other items
under there to see if there is play in the tie rod ends etc.

loudly and I needed this car running (hence inferior supplier). Bearing
is cool to the touch, unlike the other side. The wheel itself shakes a few
mm left and right but not up and down, not sure what that is about but the
other side does the same thing.

I have a definite "clunk" and chatter when I am light on the brake -
nothing if I am more forceful. I felt around and think everything is
tightened correctly, at least that I can get to externally. The other note
is that I felt/heard the front wheel wobbling a bit when my right rear
wheel went through a pothole at speed this morning, so I'm nervous that
this is a bigger issue than some grease on a rotor.

Is this just the seal, or something else in the front end? Should I plan
to redo the whole bearing if I have to go in for the rear seal? It is
clear I have to do the other side soon also, and if I'm doing something
wrong I want to make sure I don't repeat it. :/

Thanks,
-Tim

2012-11-19 Thread WILTON
'Had some mighty fine reindeer stew in Greenland. A nice herd lived in
hills near base. I'd occasionally drive up VERY steep ice/packed snow road
(fine gravel sprinkled on top of it) to plateau and hills above the base to
view some "countryside" and check on the reindeer. I'd pull up beside
several of them 4 or 5 feet away and admire/study the way they scratched
away snow covering their food (dry grass), take a bite, chew, etc. None of
them ever showed any fear of me; 'went up to see them one afternoon, and
found two reindeer heads lying by the road. 'Few days later, my Danish
contractor chief engineer invited me to his house one evening for dinner -
mighty fine meal.

BTW, getting back down the VERY steep road, especially in winter was
"puckering" - constant pumping of brakes to keep truck from getting too fast
and careening or slipping on ice off cliff, etc.

I am told that the dead deer pickers have exactly that in mind, though
I'm sure a lot of my neighbors might be interested in feeding themselves
too.

Next bobcat kill I'll give you a ring. The one out front was nice and
fresh, only marks I could see were the claw marks on its rear legs. Not
sure how it was killed. It was small, not a lot bigger than my dogs so
not sure how much you would get off it, but it was probably tender.

So older Benz "mags" are really made out of magnesium? One certainly
doesn't want to weld on those ... don't even need a magnesium fire.

Deer were extinct in Indiana from the late 1890s to 1954, when they
were re-introduced. I can remember it being a big deal to see one
since they'd been gone out of living memory for some time.

Lots more now than there were back in Lincoln's time, too -- the live
along the edge of the forest, and in those days there was solid
forest. Now we have little isolated bits, and people grow lots of
deer food, so we have plenty. More than plenty.

Wolves, who keep the deer in check, have been gone much longer than
the deer.

They are protected in the sense that they are only in season certain times of
the year, and depending on how you take one, there might be other issues with
discharging a firearm inside city limits, etc. You also have to get it tagged
once you kill it. I think there might be exceptions if it's on private land.

Believe it or not, there is a "road kill tag" for someone who wants to keep a
carcass from a road kill. That's why the cops were in such a tizzy about the
kids who took the one I hit. They were more worried about getting the tag than
filing an accident report.

It was that way in suburban Wisconsin. When I lived in Port Washington they
were all over the gardens, chewed up the ornamentals, etc., especially if there
was a lot of snow cover.

We had a small heard that lived somewhere in the neighborhood. You could set
your clock at night by there trek down the middle of the street, around 11:00
pm. They would start at one end and "peel off" a few at a time into different
yards based on what they felt like eating that night.

Re: [MBZ] Housing etc

2012-11-19 Thread Peter Frederick
Carbondale, eh? Spent seven years there twenty years ago getting my
PhD!

Housing prices are insane in many areas -- there is a huge
concentration of population in the metro areas compounded by
suburbanization, hence shortages of places for people to actually
live, and the "shadow" banking system provided unbelievably large
amounts of money to drive prices up.

This is one of the causes of the current economic problems -- housing
prices are way out of line in many places (the cost to build a house
in Chicago isn't significantly different than it is in Carbondale
other than a small amount more for labor) and the debt load is huge.

Housing prices are actually driven by what people can afford to pay
for housing, not what some speculator can drive the price up to.
Making up the difference with debt destroys the currency, and here we
are.

How can a bidding war result in a sale at only $73K?

I think the value of a home around here is driven by the cost of
building a new one.
At something approaching $200 per square foot, even a modest sized home
will run close to $300 with the lot.

I've seen some situations where landlords were pretty bad, too, but
your point on housing is well taken.

Cincinnatti is a perfect example -- the Over The Rhine area is now a
slum, it was quite prosperous and well populated back in the horse and
buggy days, but when the buggy factorys turned Henry Ford down and
subsequently died off, there was little or no employment and the area
declined slowly into a real mess.

The new "plan" to revive it is to buy up the dilapidated turn of the
last century housing and replace it with million dollar and up
condos. Naturally, this displaces the severely disadvantaged people
who lived there because they were born there and never could find a
decent job, so the city is buying up housing in other places and
putting in Section Eight housing.

Flat stupid, the real problem is not dilapidated housing, it's no
employment. Get some decent jobs in there (after all, Cincinnatti was
the industrial hub of the Midwest for nearly a century) and most of
the trouble will solve itself. People with incomes fix up their
houses (and buy them instead of paying slumlords), but when there is
no money, guess what happens.

Great Britain "solved" it's unemployment problem in the 1700's by

Be happy that you can still do that.

Here, our nice socialist govenrment decided that tenants were being
abused by the system and set up a board to handle all landlord and
tenant issues.

You no longer take the matters to a court.
You have to deal with a board of people who feel sorry for the poor
abused tenant.
No wonder it is becoming more difficult to find a place to rent and not
much new multi-family housing is coming on-line except for condos. Many
of our apartment buildings are being converted to condos too.

I only see Mipsie driving her G around while yapping on her phone on her
way to the pedicure and lunch then to pick up Dakota and Carlton after
the soccer practice. She probably wouldn't even notice running over a

Re: [MBZ] my GL after wife hit a deer this morning

2012-11-19 Thread Dan Penoff
I hit a deer with my brand new Suburban in broad daylight on the start of a
long road trip. Made for a crappy Thanksgiving in 1988.

Did the same thing on the left side. I saw the deer start to bolt (across an
interstate highway) and immediately tried to slow down without making things go
airborne in the vehicle. The deer tripped and lost its footing, which kept it
from getting in front of the truck, but the passenger side rear view mirror hit
it in the head, spinning it around into the back passenger side door, caving it
in.

It then spun around behind my Suburban and ended up in the windshield of an
elderly couple's Dodge K car behind me.

Two kids pulled over behind up, possibly to offer assistance, or so I thought.
They grabbed the deer, tossed it in their trunk, and took off.

When the sheriff came to make the accident report, all he cared about was
ID'ing the car that took the deer, since that is apparently illegal in
Wisconsin.

An hour later we were back under way, and now because of the delay, entered the
massive three state holiday parking lot known as the TriState Tollway.

Friend of mine hit a deer with his Gold Wing. We bought him a pair of deer
whistles.
A year or so later one asked him how how they work. He replied: "Real good.
Haven't seen a deer in my garage jet".

Probably the same way it happened to my wife. The deer jumped
from the left side then tried to jump back, right rear leg got
caught under the front tire just as the bumper hit the body
which, anchored by the leg got slung around and hit the side of
the truck. Broke the leg and dented the side of the truck as well
as killed the deer. There was even hair still stuck between the
rim and tire when I looked at it later. Deer tasted real good though.

Regy was probably turning right to avoid, after deer hit front it was spinning
and legs or head spun and hit presented door. Looks like car was driving
pretty fast when it happened.

Hah! I had to learn to drive like a Neopolitan, when I was stationed there for
three years. If I drove like that here (running red lights, ignoring speed
limits, driving on the shoulder, driving backwards when the jam in front is too
much) I would never hit a deer because I would loose my license!
