That's pretty amazing! I wouldn't want to ride along, let alone try to
make the landing! This isn't a video game; you could get hurt trying to
do something like that.

I noticed, though, that we have gone from having to have something that's
41 kB approved to having something that's 9.67 MB come straight to the
list without having a link at the bottom of the sender's email. I think
that may be too much of a change for some.

[MBZ] ignition switch wires on 1984 300D turbo and other problem

2013-01-13 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

Folks,

If you remember, a month or so ago, i pulled the plug off of the back
of the ignition switch of Daughter's 84 300D turbo and opened the
plug and mixed all the wires up. I opened the plug because the wires
are a bit cobbled together and spliced.

We some difficulty i sorted them as below to the various
terminals i hope the color codes are correct

P30 green/white

15R green/red

50 violet/white

30 red

15x red/yellow

30 red again

15 red/black

anyway, i solved the problem of the switch not actuating the starter
by changing the ignition lock cylinder, the old one wouldn't turn to
the start position

THEN we addressed another problem, that of a collapsed engine mount.
Amazingly, all of the allen screws came out easily, probably because
the entire area had been soaked in ATF since i had some bad power
steering hoses, one supply and one pressure line that i replaced.

Daughter and i easily replaced the left engine mount.

NOW there is a new problem the radio doesn't work and the
windshield wipers don't work

everything else seems to work

i did check the wiper fues (#6 if my memory is correct)

ideas?

thanks,

xx rick

an Amazon.com "associate." In this program, you place on your site
links to products on Amazon.com. If people buy using those links, you
get a commission. If you can do a good job identifying products that
your site visitors might buy, you can earn decent money (or so I've
heard). This is of course more work than just putting AdSense ads on
your site.

I've got a plan for a funny narrative video, as opposed to videos about Coleman

Re: [MBZ] Vac Issues & shut off at IP on 124

2013-01-13 Thread Dieselhead
Probably two separate issues. I had a similar problem with the
shutoff on OM603. I could shut off the engine ok with the mightyvac,
but it would not shut down with the engine vacuum, exactly as you
describe. I chased that for a long time, but it was cured when i put
in a new vac shutoff.

The trans would be a symptom of excessive vacuum pressure, not low
pressure. However that is a separate problem that I will let others
address, or refer you to sunvalley mercedes recyclers website, where
there are good troubleshooting tips.

Probably a leak in the lines somewhere? Bad fitting? Bad valve?
Vac issues can be annoying.

and 90K on power train). Car has run well until now (exception
being annoying oil leak) with basic standard maintenance using M1
etc at required intervals.

Of late it seems to have developed vacuum issues.
Engine shut off did not work properly. Diagnosis with a MitiVac
showed slow leak from shut off valve, which was then replaced with
part from the parts engine, which holds vac perfectly. However this
did not solve issue. When the switch is shut off, the valve kicks
in, vacuum from the line from the switch holds at 22. Problem is
the valve as mounted on the IP does not have enough "pull" to shut
off engine completely! It slows the RPM but i still need to
manually push the "shut off lever" the last little bit to get the
engine to stop. (it's almost as if the shut off valve is fighting
something that will not give the last little bit without outside
help.)
At the same time the car shifts a bit poorly. It goes through the
lower shifts from a stand still OK, but, between 3 and 4th at 4000
RPM or higher you need to take your foot of the accelerator to fool
it into that last shift. Other than that there is no slippage or
irregularity in the shift.

With car running at idle the Miti Vac reads about 18 to just under 20.
Ideas on what to look at next?

Re: [MBZ] Vac Issues & shut off at IP on 124

2013-01-13 Thread Peter Frederick
Make sure you can shut the fuel off with a MitiVac -- if not, verify
that the solenoid is installed correctly and the shaft seal is not
rock hard and sticking (this was an issue with the old 300D).

Shifting sounds like a mis-adjusted mechanical linkage to the
transmission. The system works "backwards" on the 603 -- cable should
be fully extended at rest, and retract into the housing as the pedal
goes down. Adjust for slight play at rest.

Also make sure the switchover valve holds pressure, the line from the
intake to the boost controller and shift controller is intact, and
that the vacuum lines are all solid -- they get brittle and crack in
such a way as to not leak when static, but do leak with engine
vibration. They also simply snap off.

Verify that the two valves that control the air recirculation valve
and EGR hold vacuum as well -- these often leak, and there is not
sufficient vacuum from the pump to control the rest of the systems,
including the ACC, if they are blown. I just cap the lines, I don't
care if the air recirc works enough to pay $120 for a new part.

Not hard, just a pain.

2013-01-13 Thread Rich Thomas
A buddy of mine had a Checker cab in high school, his dad bought it at
some charity auction for $500, it was painted baby blue. It was not a
diesel, could barely get out of its own way, but was built like a tank
and could haul 10 or 12 kids on the bus run to and from school. That
thing was awesome. When he went to college his younger sister inherited
it, it lasted a while longer then just died and was gonzo, so his dad
bought the first Toyota Celica that came out (I think it was the
cheapest thing available at the time). The sales guy told him it was
very sporty, and should be driven hard, so my buddy and his sister just
beat the hell out of that thing. I think it survived her through high
school, then once she was off to college it got sold or died or something.

Speaking of diesels, I saw in the paper this morning that Jeep is
showing a new diesel at the auto show. Had no details.

That's right, they are not the same thing at all.

You can very easily get by on today's internet without Java, unless you
like to play some online games such as Minecraft. Java has a long
history of security problems and I would advise removing it from your
computer entirely if you don't need it, then you never have to worry
about it again.

Re: [MBZ] Vac Issues & shut off at IP on 124

2013-01-13 Thread Dan Penoff
I would look at a couple of things to start:

1.) Vacuum reservoir. The O ring where the vacuum line enters this can dry out
and crack, leading to leaks. If it's bad enough, the pump can't keep up with
it and vacuum levels are erratic and sometimes nonexistent.

2.) Isolate the various vacuum systems. Plug the line to the locking system to
take it out of the mix. Check the vacuum switchover valves if it has them.

3.) Put a "T" in the line coming off the main vacuum feeder and run a hose into
the cabin. Put a vacuum gauge on it and drive the car so you can observe
vacuum levels during operation.

Sounds like the IP vacuum valve isn't the correct one or it's not indexed in
the linkage properly. There should be enough movement in the valve that it
will pull beyond the point at which the IP linkage stops.

Troubleshooting vacuum systems isn't that difficult. You have to isolate the
various parts one at a time and see what the results are. From there you can
track things down with a MityVac.

[MBZ] Fwd: 123 series seatbelts

Has anyone had better luck than I on driver seatbelts for this
model? I have had to replace three of them in the past 7 years,
and it gets to be a real pain. It is always the same problem, the
ratcheting mechanism locks up, and you have to play a lot with it
to simply extend and lock the harness. I have tried cleaning
them to no avail, even some pin-point oiling, but nothing seems to
work. Wisdom anyone?

The ones I saw had six cylinder Perkins diesel engines rated about 140 hp.
The curb weight was about 3500 lbs; not much more than a 123 300D. I don't
remember the torque value, but it would seem that the speed and
accelleration wouldn't be too bad. These were later model Checkers and
probably not as heavy as earlier models.
Wanted a safer car than the Beetles we drove. Looked at Checker Marathons

Got the new ignition lock cylinder on Thursday from the Q.

After fashioning the release tool out of an appropriately sized piece of
coat hanger, we went at it. While it took us a few minutes to get the
retaining ring to release, once that was done it was all down hill.
Interestingly, the "face" of the lock cylinder had broken loose from the
cylinder itself. That is, when we took everything apart, the face or
front of the lock cylinder that you see where the key is inserted just
fell out by itself. You could see broken metal between it and the lock
cylinder, so who knows how long it had been that way.

If you deduct the time we fiddled around, the whole job took about a
minute. Son reports that the ignition is now buttery smooth, and no
catching or hanging when the key is turned.

An observation on my part: As I had never done a 124 chassis ignition
lock, even after reading the "cartoon" manual it wasn't completely clear
to me how the retaining ring/collar released. I recalled the 123 and 126
ignitions, where the ring was threaded and once released you unscrewed it
from the ignition assembly.

In the case of the 124, releasing the ring causes it to pop off with some
force, literally springing off of the mechanism.

The angle on the ends of the release wire tool also seem to be critical.
I had to trim the ends several times before getting an angle on them that
would allow the mechanism to release.

Thanks to the Q for the prompt response and getting us the new ignition
lock cylinder and key in a timely manner, considering it is a special
order part.

The crank sprocket would last at least 500k in an OM621. They will
last longer in 616/617. You will wear out 2-3 crank sprockets before
you will wear out the cam and timing sprockets. I'd check cam and
timing sprockets at a million miles.

Chain and sprocket wear together, but the socket wears much more
slowly. Take a look while you're there, easy to replace later if
needed. Keep in mind that if this cam sprocket is worn, so will the
IP timer sprocket and the crank sprocket. Those are not so easy to
replace.

Chain and sprocket wear together, but the socket wears much more slowly. Take
a look while you're there, easy to replace later if needed. Keep in mind that
if this cam sprocket is worn, so will the IP timer sprocket and the crank
sprocket. Those are not so easy to replace.

'83 300D window washer kept spraying in the wrong direction and I found that
it was debris coming from the tank that caused it. Put a very small fuel
filter in line between the tank and and the nozzles and haven't had the
problem since.

Re: [MBZ] AdSense -OT

2013-01-13 Thread Dan Penoff
Thanks, Jaime.

Your situation probably mirrors what mine would be, as I'm not looking to drive
boatloads of traffic through my web site. I was just curious as to whether or
not it was of any value, even if minimal at best.

I was also wondering if there were any other services similar to AdSense that
might pay better, too. Again, I'm not expecting droves of people, just
thinking about ways to offset some of my hosting costs.

At that rate it seems of marginal value...

I do... although I don't try very hard to make it work, I make nearly no
revenue. So far this month: $0.91.

I suspect I could tweak it to do better, but not good enough to make it
worth my time. I'll probably just remove the ads sometime soon.

According google anayltics (which is an excellent tool), I have about 500
unique visitors a month.

Does anyone use AdSense or a similar service for placement of ads on their web

I was looking at this and wondered how effective it was at generating revenue.
