There are two styles of adjusters that I have seen on W123s.
The older style is a gear head under the clamping bold (that is in the slot
- not the pivot) that engages in a rack on the alternator bracket. Turning
the bolt is supposed to turn the gear against the rack and apply tension to
the belt. On every one I have encountered, the gear and/or rack is stripped
and so the system is non-functional.

On newer cars, there is a 5 mm (or so) threaded rod sticking out of the side
of the clamping bolt. There is a long (40 mm) nut that rests against a
protruding portion of the alternator mounting bracket. Tightening this nut
causes the clamping bolt to be pulled outward and increase the tension on
the belt. These also often break, especially if there is something not
quite aligned correctly.

It sounds like Greg's is the second style.

And I'm guessing Don is referring to the first style.

On one of mine, I just took out the adjuster. the old Dissels didn't
have an adjuster anyhow. You just put a bar in to hold the belt
tight while you tighten up the bolt.

Here's a true tale. Wilton can save it to read when he gets up with the
chickens in the morning: [:o)

Gerry

As a young 20-something, when I went to work as the night lab tech at
the old Tampa Municipal Hospital, I was in hog heaven; working amongst
a gaggle of young, single nurses. One pretty blackhaired nurse caught
my eye. I would talk to her at every opportunity and sometimes tease
her, but she was so "cool" and concentrated on caring for wards full of
poor patients, my male pride prevented me from asking her out because I
thought she would probably refuse.

Finally one slow night I changed my voice, called her, told her I was
the engineer, and ask her to drop a piece of toilet paper out of a
particular ward window so I could see which way the wind was blowing
since I wanted to blow out the smoke stack.

On her way to the window with the toilet paper she knocked a bedpan off
of a bedside table and woke up the whole ward which undid her hard work
of getting the patients to sleep. Finding that she couldn't open the
window, which
probably hadn't been opened since the hospital was built, she went back
to the nursing station and called the engineer.

"I couldn't get the window open to drop the toilet paper so you can blow
out the smoke stack.", she said.

"What in the world are you talking about?", the engineer said. "Drop
toilet paper? Blow out the smokestack? I didn't call you."

It didn't take long for her to figure out who called her and the lab
phone was soon ringing. She "let me have it" but I was laughing so hard
she started laughing too and that's when I asked for a date and she
agreed.

We married the following summer and it lasted 50 years until her death 6
years ago..

On W123's, DOT3 will cause the hoses to swell. So I suspect the

Here's a true tale. Wilton can save it to read when he gets up with the
chickens in the morning: [:o)

Gerry

As a young 20-something, when I went to work as the night lab tech at the
old Tampa Municipal Hospital, I was in hog heaven; working amongst a
gaggle of young, single nurses. One pretty blackhaired nurse caught my
eye. I would talk to her at every opportunity and sometimes tease her,
but she was so "cool" and concentrated on caring for wards full of poor
patients, my male pride prevented me from asking her out because I
thought she would probably refuse.

Finally one slow night I changed my voice, called her, told her I was the
engineer, and ask her to drop a piece of toilet paper out of a particular
ward window so I could see which way the wind was blowing since I wanted
to blow out the smoke stack.

She "let me have it" but I was laughing so hard
she started laughing too and that's when I asked for a date and she
agreed.

We married the following summer and it lasted 50 years until her death 6
years ago..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_carp

In North America

Silver carp were imported to North America in the 1970s to control algae
growth in aquaculture and municipal wastewater treatment facilities. They
escaped from captivity soon after their importation.[5] They are
considered a highly invasive species.[6] Silver carp, with the closely
related bighead carp, often reach extremely high population densities,
and are thought to have undesirable effects on the environment and native
species.[7]

By 2003, silver carp had spread into the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio, and
Missouri Rivers and many of their tributaries in the United States. By
August 2009, they had become abundant in the Mississippi River watershed
from Louisiana to South Dakota and Illinois, and had grown close to
invading the Great Lakes via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.[8]
Navigation dams on the Mississippi River seem to have slowed their
advance up the Mississippi River, and until late November 2008, silver
carp had not been captured north of central Iowa on the Mississippi.[9]
Dams that do not have navigation locks are complete barriers to upstream
natural movement of silver carp, and it is important for fishermen not to
assist this movement by the unintentional use of silver carp as bait.[10]

The silver carp is also called the flying carp for its tendency to leap
from the water when startled.[11] They can grow to over 40 lb (18 kg),
and can leap 10 ft (3 m) in the air. Many boaters traveling in uncovered
high-speed watercraft have been injured by running into the fish while at
speed. In 2003, a woman jet-skiing broke her nose and a vertebra by
colliding with a silver carp, and nearly drowned.[12] In another example,
a leaping silver carp broke the jaw of a teenager being pulled on an
inner tube.[13] Water skiing in areas where silver carp are present is
extremely dangerous.[14]

As far as I know, DOT 3 and DOT 4 are compatible with the main
difference being that DOT 4 has a higher boiling point. So you should
be able to use DOT 4 in any vehicle that calls for DOT 3 (although the
cost is slightly higher). DOT 5 is NOT compatible and at minimum
requires a complete flush.

I haven't used DOT 3 for at least 30 years now.

Use DOT 4, and I suspect it's what you need anyway since you have disk
brakes.

[MBZ] Repair 240D Alternator Adjusting Bolt?

2013-03-10 Thread Greg Fiorentino
List Friends:

My son just drove from Austin TX to Vancouver WA with an inop alternator
because the adjusting bolt threads (on the smaller diameter part) are
stripped. I see that Rusty's site has the part for ONLY $ 56.75 as opposed
to the list price of $ 113.51.

My question is: is there any reason why I can't (or shouldn't) manufacture
a replacement for the small diameter part out of O-1 drill rod on my 7X12
lathe, then braze it to the head of the bolt using perhaps some Chronotron
high-strength hard silver-solder? My plan would be to leave the rod in its
annealed state rather than hardening and tempering it, since I don't think
hardening it would increase its strength.

All comments and suggestions welcome!

Greg

In 1955, a later Model A was no more than 28 years old.

Today, all W123s are over 28 years old.

[MBZ] OT - RAUCOUS BAND

2013-03-10 Thread WILTON

Mighty quiet. Time for another Sondy Tale.

RAUCOUS BAND
By Wilton Strickland

From 4 Feb 1978 to 8 Feb 1979, I was Director of Engineering, in charge of
construction and maintenance of all physical facilities at Sondrestrom Air
Base, Greenland. For two to three weeks during the holiday season in Dec
and Jan, I was also acting Base Commander while our regular Base Commander
was away on leave.

One day during this period, one of the Danish civilian contractor Civil
Engineers who lived on the lower floor of the building in which I also lived
came to my office with a plea for help. He told me that he and others
living on his floor had had very little sleep for several nights because of
the fighting and very loud and raucous behavior of the members of a
USO-sponsored band on a two-to-three-week gig at out Officer and NCO Clubs.
He said the band would come in around midnight or after and continue to play
loud music interspersed by loud shouting, screaming by the band's female
singer and (possibly drunken) fighting amongst themselves for the rest of
the night - just extremely disruptive to normal sleep for anybody trying to
work during normal duty hours every day. Construction of the building was
such that, in my room on the second floor, I could not hear the sounds from
the first floor.

Later that afternoon, I found the band leader in his room and asked him to
please calm it down late at night in the building; that others on the floor
have to get up early every day and go to work; that we appreciate the work
they're doing to entertain us at the clubs, but that we can not accept such
disruptive behavior in our living area every night. Evidently, though, the
band leader did not understand my warning; next day, I got the same type of
report of the band's disruptive behavior on the very night after I had
warned them.

Again, I confronted the band leader in his room and asked him to assemble
the rest of the band (5 or 6) to hear my second warning. I tried to make
myself abundantly clear, "If I hear one more report of your band's loud,
raucous behavior in the dormitory, including loud music, fighting, screaming
and, in general, drunken brawl-type behavior, which shows no respect or
concern for your neighbors, late at night and into early morning, I'll put
you and the entire band on the next Air Force airplane headed south to
McGuire AFB, NJ. Reports I've had from some of your neighbors even indicate
that there may be some physical assaults occurring between members of the
band. A C-141 will be headed from here to McGuire early tomorrow afternoon.
Don't make me have to put you on it!" The leader replied, "Yes, Sir, I
understand.  We'll take care of the situation.  Please, don't send us home;
we're supposed to have a 3-week gig at Thule after we finish here. Please,
don't send us home." I insisted, "You heard me; it's up to you; I can not -
I will not - condone such disruptive behavior keeping the peace-loving
members of our work force up all night."

The next day, I pointedly asked several occupants of the first floor about
the band's behavior the night before. "Quiet as a mouse," a couple of 'em
said. "What did you say? Whatever it was, thanks." Thankfully, also, I
never heard another word about the band. 'Still don't know if I could have
legally and properly put 'em on the plane, but my threat worked, anyway. 'Just
glad I didn't have to try to put 'em on the plane.

Only two wires go to the window motor, you should be able to
not only measure good continuity there at the switch, through
the motor, but to run it by applying 12V directly. (I used
a battery charger.) Up or down, depending on polarity.

Wouldn't that be a bad chain tensioner letting the chain flop? Might be
replaceable if it's accessible.
Gerry

If it were a MB engine, or other ohc engine, that would be true.
However, it is a traditional merkun V engine with pushrods and the
cam very close to the crank in the center of the V. These chains
have no tensioner.
