Some more interesting cars! I enjoyed browsing your local CL, you have
quite the selection to choose from! It would certainly be fun to spend a
day(s?) going & looking at all the cars in your locale! :)

This one has got to be at the top of the list!
Beautiful, nearly fully loaded black 1997 E300D (real heated leather,
not Tex! Every option except power rear shade)

2002 C320 (Nicely equipped!):

2000 ML55 (AMG, need I say more!):

2003 CLK320 Cab (last year, well optioned!):

1987 300E (Nice, if your a fan of DB877 Petrol or Blue/Green!)

Out of state (IL), just came across this 40Kmi 1987 300E? Think I prefer
the DB261 seafoam over the DB877 blue/green. I would expect to drop a
few K's on it getting it mechanically up to snuff due to age/storage
though. Would be a shame to drive it though, a display car really

As to your list, that '94 S350D you found looks interesting too & the'98
S420, very well presented & probably the best of the lot! Wasn't really
impressed with the E320 Cabs you found though. Save up & get a nicer
example that would not need a lot invested in it...if your really
interested in one, I say

"New jack pine seedlings grow well after a hot fire. Fire causes the cone

heat, such as the heat from fire, in order to open are called serotinous
cones . When the
heat causes the cones to open, seeds are released and fall to the ground
(see animation below).

In Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) lights fires in the
Jack Pine Ecosystems to help new jack pine trees grow. This is because the
Kirtland's Warbler will only build nests under the young jack pine trees."

Controlled burns are good for prairies, oak savannahs and many other

Burning off grass or pastureland in the fall is a good thing too.

I suspect a lot of that has to do with where "here" and "there" are.
To get the ground to turn into glass here in New England would
require tremendous heat as even when its very dry its still fairly
wet. If you were already starting from fairly dry I suspect that
you'd require less heat to dry things out before glassifying and
your forests would burn much more readily and more easily create
more heat. As you've got a lot less under brush I'd bet the winds
whip up a lot better in a fire too.

Huge regional variation across this great land of ours yet it seems
like our political idiots feel like one management schema always
makes the most sense.

Hoya, Hoya, Hoya

When I took Scout leadership training, one instructor was blathering
on about how a Boy Scout troop out primitive camping had to carry
along some portable fire pit because building a camp fire would turn
the ground to glass and nothing would grow for 1000 years. I really
wanted to keep saying "Hoya" from the back row repeatedly. I held my
tongue, but it is discouraging to hear BSA espousing such BS. If
that were true, our country would be nearly covered with burnout
marks from campfires.

I used to build huge bonfires with fenceposts in the fall for
hayrides. In the spring the area would be covered with weeds. We
burned there 10-20 times a year for decades. When we quit, the area
was soon covered with grass.

There may be sandy areas where you might be able to build a fire hot
enough to melt sand into glass, but I've never seen it. In most of
the country, the ground is too moist to ever get very hot.

[MBZ] Longest words and Yodelling

2013-06-05 Thread Gerry Archer

From: "Gerry Archer"

Germany is currently looking for a word that is currently the longest in
the
German language. Here are the English and German longest words and
illustrations of what tying words together endlessly can produce:

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis:

A lung disease and the longest English word.

Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz:

"A law on the transfer of monitoring duties for labelling beef."

This is the former longest German word. Germany is looking for a new long
word.

Technically, there is no limit to word length in German because, like
Finnish and Hungarian, it allows words to be joined together to create
compound nouns at will. Supersonic jet is:

Überschallgeschwindigkeitsflugzeug.

If a football team makes it to the World Cup, it's a:

Fussballweltmeisterschaftsendrundenteilnehmer.

Admittedly, many words of such length are often used in jest.

Here's a brief example of the endless possibilities:
A ballpoint pen that belongs to a captain could be called a:

Kapitänskugelschreiber.

If the pen happens to belong to a captain of the Danube Steamship Company,
it's a:

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskugelschreiber.

Let us now refer to the ink used in that pen. This is the:

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskugelschreibertinte.

And, please bear with us, there could theoretically be a shop specializing
in such ink. In that case we have a:

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskugelschreibertintenfachgeschäft.

And that store would presumably have a manager, the:

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskugelschreibertintenfachgeschäftsführer.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/germany-seeks-a-new-longest-word-a-903470.html

I was once talking to a German xray tech and a German doctor. I ask them
what an xray tech would be called in the German language.

After talking to each other in German they came out with the longest word
of
any kind I had ever heard, and then they both laughed.
Gerry

I forget which model this is --W123 look for cracks in the main vacuum
line, it tends to get brittle where all the hoses connect and nothing
will work properly.

A bad brake booster will also cause fits from low vacuum, but they
seem to be fairly rare on a Benz (unlike my Dodge Aries).

Cracked plastic lines are an issue, so is the valve that runs the
whole locking system on the driver's door. Ditto for punctured
diaphragms in the lock actuators (these used to be available, a bit
fiddly to put in, but works like new then).

Get the ol MitiVac out and start testing connections and servos,

I've pretty much given up on them, for tools. Bought a refrigerator from them
a few years ago, and 14 years ago we bought our washer/dryer, which are still
working fine. Major appliances have been decent, and service calls (one for
the dryer and one for the refrigerator) were pleasant.

as i investigate further, i'm suspecting that this issue isn't with any
one line to any one door, as it's equally slow to lock or unlock, and
there isn't a significant difference between doors. (right rear seems a
little slower up and down, but i seem to recollect that it's always been
a little stiffer.)

i'm having a hard time reading some of the smaller text in the
scans of the factory service manual pages, and compounding the issue is
the fact that some of what the manual says isn't what i'm finding on the
car. hose line colors aren't the same, fittings don't seem to be hooked
up exactly as depicted; it's all a bit fiddly.

since the shifting still seems to be sharper than what i think is
ideal, i'm wondering if i don't have a significant leak at the
Transmission or somewhere en route to the Trans; any typical places i
should look?

Yes get them from Q2 and get spares. Also, another common problem on the
123 models is the vacuum switch inside the driver's door. That switch can
leak and it can also be out of adjustment to the point it "dumps" the vacuum
in one position or the other. As you troubleshoot you may find a leaking
vacuum motor or circuit (e.g. the locking gas cap circuit leaks). You can
use a golf tee to plug the line to that circuit or device to get the rest of
the system working or to allow you to troubleshoot the rest of the system.
This way you can identify all the failed parts vs. fixing one thing only to
find another problem.

finally got around to poking into this some more; had to deal with
the getting the wifelets econo-box to pass Calif smog first. (cleaned up
EGR stuff, replaced a cracked Ex Manifold, ran de-carbonizing gunk

now also blows high on HCs,... . but that's another story.)

got under the hood of the 300D ('85 Calif) to start looking at

the check valve, i found that the rubber 120* 3-way and 90* 4-way 'T's
were cracked at the ends to the point where it was remarkable that they
were staying in place at all!

hi!

symptoms of a vacuum leak are rapidly showing up in our '85 300D

down when keying off.

is there a resource for how to trace down and repair leaks that

Re: [MBZ] June Jamboree this weekend

2013-06-05 Thread Dan Penoff
Yes, the M189 in a car with air suspension is about as good as it gets for
vintage MBs. I loved driving mine hard when I could.

My water pump failed at the main seal in front, and it literally gushed coolant
out if you put any in the system.

The coupling isn't all that bad to deal with, but the tricky part, or so I
found, was driving the driven flange off the old pump shaft and on to the new
one without damaging it. I had access to a bench press, which was a BIG help,
but it was still scary as the parts were pretty much unobtainium.

It's funny now, but it wasn't at the time:

We all know how if one is working on a super critical part or assembly that we
get hypersensitive about everything we are doing - I was so wound up when
reassembling my pump that I put the driven flange on BACKWARDS when I
reassembled it.

Talk about freaking out! I was convinced I was going to destroy my new $400
took Rusty 30 days to get it from Germany pump. Not to mention the driven
flange, if I recall, is aluminum.

I spent a rather harrowing 20 minutes or so carefully pressing the flange off
and back on again in the proper orientation. I had to take a bit of a breather
when that was done.

Yeah, I'm a bit frightened about the pump. It seems the most delicate part
is removing the flange that connects it to the drive coupler. Looks like
every part involved is at least $800, and a lot is NLA like you said. I'm
hoping if I can get it apart, I can get replacement seals and rebuilt it
myself. Otherwise, some guy in Maryland has been advertising rebuilds for
under $400, which seems reasonable.

First I really need to figure out where the leak is. There are so many
hoses on this engine which are difficult to access and see, I can't be sure
its the pump at all.

But boy the M189 is a nice engine. The power at highway speeds is really
quite remarkable, the car just wants to go faster and faster.

I don't think too many of your are in the area, but the MBCA is holding
their anual June Jamboree at MBUSA in Montvale, NJ this weekend. Lots of
folks bring lots of cars of all kinds, from gullwings to 240Ds. Its worth
the trip if you're not too far away.

I was going to drive my 67 300SEL, but a few things have set me back.
First, while the car is now drivable and runs very well, the water pump
has started leaking pretty badly. I took the first significant drive with
the car last weekend, a 20 mile highway trip and it leaked about a quart.
A little too much to be comfortable. Second, its still in terrible need
of an exhaust system. A new stainless system from Timevalve arrived this
week, but the weather looks bad for Friday, so I won't be able to take the
day off to install it.

I'm quite disappointed, as I really looked forward to bringing the car,
dirty and dusty as it is, still not cleaned up after its 20+ year storage.
I think it would have made quite the attraction, being such a rare and odd
car.

Normally, I bring my 79 300SD to the show, but the back seat has been out
for over a month at the upholstery guy and hes not going to finish until
next week.

So, I'll probably bring the 74 450SL i picked up earlier this year. I'm
not really happy to be another 107 in the show, since there are so many,
and so many nice ones, but it'll be good to be there with something!

Anyone up for attending?

Snap-On hex inserts are replaceable and held in with roll pins.
Maybe buy just the replacement bit that goes in the socket, wrap some
electrical tape over the end, and jam it in a 3/8" drive socket? (Snappy
sells a 12mm in 3/8 drive, I'm sure, but I bet it costs $25)

Wasn't too far off, the socket is $31. The replacement bit at $10 makes me
want to cut the end off a $1 allen wrench though.

[MBZ] June Jamboree this weekend

2013-06-05 Thread Jaime Kopchinski

Jaime

[MBZ] Sears service?

2013-06-05 Thread WILTON
Trying to find a 3/8" drive 12 mm Allen socket this morning, I tried to call
the tools desk/shop at Snears. 'Can't even find a number in the local
directories for STORE main #! There are several 800 and 888 #s listed for such
as Home improvement items, siding, roofing, air conditioning, appliance
installation and 2 or 3 other general categories, but no # related to tools.
Called auto service hoping somebody could tell me a store main #, but could not
get anybody to answer. Finally got a answer (in India it sounded like) on home
improvement #; told 'im I was trying to reach tools dept at local store; 'gave
me a # of somebody trying to take reservations for hotel suites. 'Said to
SWMBO, "Can't find a local # for the Sears store." Few minutes later, I heard
her in another room on the phone. She soon came in and handed me the phone
while saying, "Here, talk to my husband." Guess what?! Same guy in India I
had talked to 30 minutes earlier; gave me the same wrong #; told 'im, "30
minutes ago, all I could get on that # is somebody selling hotel
reservations." Then he said, "Go on internet and find the tool in tools
catalog." I did, but still unable to find anybody (clerk) to check shelf in
local store for the item. 'Finally called friend who knows everybody in the
county plus their phone numbers. He didn't have the # readily available but
said he'd call back; called few min later and said, "Try this #." I recognized
the # he gave me as the OLD (years ago) main store #; friend musta had it in
his cell phone. I dialed the # - shonuff operator at local main store
answered! 'Asked for tools dept; finally got answer; asked again for tools
-mechanic's hand tools; 'put me on hold listening to damned music that I DON'T
like for 15 minutes; finally hung up and dialed again; told operator, again,
"Trying to reach tools dept/desk." On hold again 'bout 5 min; different guy
came on asked him if they have "3/8 drive 12 mm Allen socket." 'Came back on
in coupla mi
nutes, "Biggest we have is 10mm." NEARLY TOW HOURS TO GET AN ANSWER! Sears
service has gone to hell.

Meanwhile, I found 1/2" drive 12 mm Allen socket at Autozone, but had to get
package containing 2 larger Allen sockets also. 'Think I can punch the Allen
wrench out of the 1/2 drive (or saw it off) and stick one end of it in a 3/8"
drive 12 mm socket to "make" the 12 mm Allen socket I was trying to buy.

Senator from OR, Wyden, is in an uproar that forest service does not reduce the
underbrush enough to keep fires from becoming catastrophic, but they will
splurge on airframes to toss water on things. And with the sequester, there
are going to be fewer hired on as seasonal fire fighters. Instead the solution
will be to pay twice as much for contractor teams to deal with the mess.

officer sees that your carry is not real, he makes you pay a fine -
big deal, you will be fined much less than the cost of a real carry.
etc, etc
Polite would be the objective.
Loss of advantage for the generally few bad guys that carry with
intent to hurt might decrease. In that realm of thought, I do not
fear bad guy with gun in anyplace I go. I go very few places and I am
happy to live without fear. I am happy to live without gay rights
because none of the places I go has any gain in overt gay rights.
There seems to be two aspects to freedom, one of which we fail to
acknowledge - to be free does not mean everyone thinks the same. I
bet I knew more gay or gun carrying people when I was in high school
45 years ago and I felt free. I feel free today also and I don't care
about guns or gay rights. Freedom is more than the demands the
talking heads want to indoctrinate - both repugnant talking heads as
well as progressive talking heads are idiots. Why I listen... is
freedom I might easily abandon, but haven't yet...

Re: [MBZ] Rear control arm needed

2013-06-05 Thread MG
Well a productive morning today. Got the rear frame out of the TD
and all taken apart. Took the control arm off the SD frame, put
in the bushings and installed it on the TD frame. I think I will
take a closer look at the shocks and may reseal them. That darn
'while I'm there' syndrome strikes again. At least I won't be
cleaning and painting the frame or control arms. That's just too
compulsive for me to think about. Or is that retentive? In any
case not me.

Then it started raining so that's it for today.

Re: [MBZ] From wet to dry ...

2013-06-05 Thread Andrew Strasfogel
http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module11/FireandJackPine.htm

"New jack pine seedlings grow well after a hot fire. Fire causes the cone
of an older jack pine tree to open up and release seeds. Cones that need
heat, such as the heat from fire, in order to open are called serotinous
cones . When the
heat causes the cones to open, seeds are released and fall to the ground
(see animation below).

In Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) lights fires in the
Jack Pine Ecosystems to help new jack pine trees grow. This is because the
Kirtland's Warbler will only build nests under the young jack pine trees."
