undoes 4 bolts and swaps a seat in and get standing applause.
Well that's just fine and dandy, perhaps next week I'll attempt to put

Re: [MBZ] OT: Starving Youngsters: was 44 years OT

2013-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond
I'm gonna call BS here. You're saying our forefathers who worked in factories
were big risk takers? The guys who worked the same job for their whole lives
and depended on the company's pension? Or go back a couple generations to the
farm where they lived their whole lives and maybe never left the county?

Risk takers are always genetic freaks. Everybody said Columbus was nuts,
nothing out there worth sailing to. Same for the first folks who ventured west.
Benz and Daimler, who would want a vehicle you had to buy gas for?

Humans are not wired to take risks, our pain to pleasure threshold is way over
on the pleasure side. Heres a simple experiment to prove it. Present somebody
with a game, you'll flip a coin and if they win you'll pay them $10, if you win
they pay you $1.
Everybody will play that game right? You'd be an idiot not to

Then change it to if they win you pay $5 if you win they pay $1. Now most
everybody will still play but some people (the super risk averse) will drop.

Now change it to $2/$1 and most people will drop. This is nuts on 100 flips of
the coin they should get around $100 while only paying $50, they almost can't
lose but most people will not take the bet, only the freaks do...

Scott, your insight is great, but all the items you tick off really devolved to
the same entity. Risk. The youth and Baby boomers are really risk averse as a
whole. There are many who are job creators, who have gambled and struggle
every day to remain viable if not massively successful.

As a nation we have shied away from that, and instituted the assurance of
vastly reduced risk in life. Go to college, somehow it will be paid for. Even
if you screwed around horridly in secondary school, we will find a way for you
to reap rewards you have not earned. Take on the debt, of a house, a degree, a
lifestyle beyond your means, there will be no Piper to pay, as we have removed
the eventual pain. Soon maybe even death will be vanquished. We will allow
you to destroy your financial future in an attempt to keep you alive by
treating your cancer or lifestyle disease, so worry not about the bottle of
booze, the cases of smokes, the triple bacon cheez burgers, the hours spent on
you butt in front of the massive TV you could not really afford, while you
consume cable tv you also can not afford.

The reduction of risk is counter evolutionary. We are no longer weeding out
the lesser qualified and encouraging the defective to increase in population.
In nature there are boundaries, and you end up with a boom and then a crash.
We think we are moderating that, but in reality, we are stoking the boom which
will one day exceed our ability to feed that cancer and it will wipe out, much
as our current wild fire policy, that which is was attempting to protect.

The housing bubble did not result in all that much pain. Nobody died. Some
lost homes, but the increase in homeless did not spike, the people moved into
subsidized housing of some sort, be it parental homes, or socialized. This
lack of life and death results has robbed the people of the joys and passion of
being alive. If we must have Manna from heaven, at least we should be forced
to wander the wilderness for two generations before we are allowed to find a
home. With four generations of socialism, we are going to have a massive
crash, much as the soviets did when their experiment toppled.

I would make long sections of modules that were sensitive to both
moisture and heat, put them under the bushes, and connect them to a
solid state switching module that activated the moisture sensitive
systems in the heat of the day, and heat sensitive systems in the
cool of the day.  When the system was activated by the dogs urine;
wet in the heat of the day and heat in the cool of the day; it would
trigger the solid state module which would turn on the lawn (and
bush) sprinkler system. For houses with no sprinkler system, a
single sprinkler pipe would be installed around the bushes, flower
beds, etc. with sprinkler heads installed at appropriate internvals
for complete coverage.
Heat and moisture sensitive components are not expensive but many
would be required.
When the dogs urine first hit the sensors he would get wet. Would a
dog keep peeing if water started falling on him on hitting him in a
stream?
Cost would probably be moderate; not cheap not expensive.
Interesting project for a DIYer.

Gerry
Once knew a pharmacy prof who had that problem. Neighbors offending dog began
coming home with strange but harmless symptoms of all kinds of
disorders and its owners would take it to the vet. Vet was always
puzzled but told the owners it must have been eating some sort of
vegetation that was toxic. As the vet bills continued to rise, the
neighbors found it cheaper to build a fence; which they did.

Another great solution. Personally, I still like the electric fencer
solution. Makes a lasting impression, at least on the dog. Not sure
the owner would ever figure it out if properly hidden from view.
Some might argue that the owner should also be treated to the
electric fencer

You be doin good - kudos to ya on buy USA.
We been doin that for over 20 years. When a buddy told me the work

buying china. When I didn't see USA on stuff at Walmart, we stopped
darkening that doorway, some 20 years ago. Same with Target. Mail

The cheap junk doesn't need to abide work/environment rules USA has,
so their stuff is cheap and is ruinous to water and land. Another

So true, Dan. Used to be that a man (should include dames now) had to make his
way in the world. You came of age and the front door was opened and you were
invited to go out into the wilderness. If you grew up on the farm, maybe you
already had a job to do, so join the family business, as would a number of
other boys who were swept up by nepotism. You were not beholden to the fat cat
with the pocket watch chomping on a big cigar. You owed him nothing, and he
nothing to you.

This may have kept out GDP fairly low, as those with the cash were able to be
robber barons and spread the wealth by investing in follies and foibles. Hire
up an army of men to build a large home, purchase more cars than Jay Leno, keep
a spare dame in every town in her own apartment. Maybe take his hungers to
town and hit restaurants, shows, shops and stores. Empty his pockets at a

Sure, the common folk did not get to live the high life, for that they had
Miller Time. But they had an honest days work and could take the money and
provide for their needs, not the consumerist wants that Madison Avenue has
screwed them into believing they deserve. The man of today is beholden to all,
and up to his eyebrows in the seven deadly sins. Greed, lust, sloth, gluttony,
pride, wrath, and envy. And all the time thinking there is never going to be a
price to pay for that.

Let the rich do as they will. I think they would be more useful spreading
their wealth through business, than to try to hide it from the taxman. The
working man should engage in a business that others need and reap the rewards
of their patronage. If you are not going to provide a quality service, you do
not deserve to remain in business. Goes for car makers, parts sellers,

Re: [MBZ] Response from Trent -- Worldpac problems?

2013-06-11 Thread Chris James

Not always.

It may state "Original Equipment Manufacturer" & show a picture of the
MB part on a Worldpac parts site BUT.Bosch does not always = the
Bosch part spec'd for your MB.

For instance, I can get aftermarket Bosch wiper blades at the local auto
parts store...if I'm ordering online I want the original MB part. There
IS a difference between the two! The MB spec'd blade of course being of
better quality, has better fitment & look. Unless your parts suppler is
ordering direct from Mercedes, there is a chance you won't be getting
what your expecting at times.

I ended up having to order another blade & washer nozzle from MB to
finally get the right ones for the early W201 I had.

Of course many OEM parts in other situations are fine, belts, hoses,
filters ect.with some MB dealers now offering online parts ordering
with info sourced from the EPC, not sure I'd bother with Worldpac or
anyone else when I have another MB that I need parts for

No, OEM means it's coming from a manufacturer that makes the parts for
MB. WorldPac may be distributor. OEM parts will not have the Star on

It probably is available, but I was waiting for Trent to get me the pump on
time and I had the other hoses ready to go. I had tried to install the bosch
pump, but it was not built properly and was a poor fit. I planned to just use
a bit of old hose cut down to do the short hose job at that point. Called
Trent from the middle of the job and it seemed to go well, but being a holiday
weekend and then a massive tie up on the main interstate next business day,
pump came later than I had hoped. Figured Stealership would have to order the
part and car would be out of commission another week or more before I got it
fixed. I wanted to hit Griot Caffeine and gasoline with the car. Maybe next
month.

I wasn't making any judgement, just pointing out. ;)

Most people don't have any idea what mileage they're getting. If you ask
they'll say "about". I had a friend who claimed his Dodge extended cab with a
318 v8 would do "about 20mpg". We did a trip to Vermont one time where I
clocked it at 18mpg. Its hilly in Vermont but he was holding the speed down
really trying to get the mileage up. After that he started really checking and
realized on average he did more like 15mpg. That'd be on 128oz gallons.

We did at one time take pride in the ability to make almost everything we need.
Then we decided to go for the lowest cost or highest cost item as either a way
to survive or to show how wonderful we were as a person. So we drive Mercedes
and BMW, while eschewing Chubby and Frod.

Sam Walton got himself rich selling American to Americans. Now his progeny are
reaping in treasures by selling chinese to americans who can no longer buy the
goods they need made by their fellow citizens. Even the goobermint wants to
outsource the items it needs on the battle field for cheapo crap.

We are repatriating many of our manufacturing jobs. Than can only be a good
thing. Maybe we can encourage more entrepreneurs to build American.

Re: [MBZ] 201 rear brakes sorted, well mostly.

2013-06-11 Thread G Mann
I've been bleeding brakes and clutches for last 15 yrs from the bottom up.
It works , one man, every time.

I use an old fashioned hand oiler. New, never had oil in it, now dedicated
to brake fluid only.
[search NAPA for one.. less than $10].

I open the master cylinder and suck the fluid out, clean it up. Then attach
a clear poly tube to the bleed screw and the hand oiler. Open the bleed
screw and start pumping brake fluid from the bottom to the master
cylinder. Start with the longest line first. When you see fluid in the
master cylinder suck it out [the old fluid that was in the line] and pump
some more till it's clean fluid. Close bleed screw and move to the next
shorter line.

You don't need to fill the master cylinder from the bottom, just put enough
fluid from the wheel cylinder up to cover the bottom of the master tank..
You add a bit more with each wheel as you push fluid from the bottom up..
Air wants to go up.. not down.. so natural physics make bleeding easy.

Lately.. I've started to cheat even more. I now use a small cheap fuel pump
with clear poly hose... I use it to first suck fluid OUT of the bleed screw
till the master cyl is empty.. then reverse the connections and pump clean
fluid UP to the master... [pickup hose into the new can of brake fluid.. of
course]

A small 12vdc battery left over from a security system is enough to power
the pump. Takes me less than 15 minutes to bleed all 4 wheels and I always
get good results.. first time.

I'm spoiled now.. it's so painless I can remove/replace brake fluid as a
normal maintenance item..

FWIW,

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] 190D lower radiator hose - more

2013-06-11 Thread clay
I did my water pump and hoses two weeks ago. The short hose between the block
and the pump was NLA from Trent, so I had to hit NAPA to source something. The
hose I got was 1.75" id and a bit large for the application, but I figured the
hose clamps would take care of it. Probably should have tried to find 42mm
hose.

I have been trying to find the leak that has been making big puddles under the
car for the last ten days. There is not a real puddle, just the dark spot on
the street under the car (r107) almost directly where the TC lives. Front end
of the trans area has schmutz, and the drips were pretty few and far between
when i camped out under the car looking to see where the drips were. I would
catch it out of the corner of my eye and then stare at the place I thought it
came from for minutes, mind wandered and, plop, another drip missed.

Put it on ramps and that did make the puddle grow, so maybe it was fuel from
the return line. I had put an ounce of ATF in the tank to maybe loosen up
engine crud, and if the line is leaking, the petrol would evaporate, but the
oily bits of ATF could be left behind, making the spots. What that did was
increase the dripping and I could see a clearer liquid drip from the TC bottom.
Sort of oily and pale, like weak tea. Could be fuel, but did not have that
smell. So I got the car out of the street, into the driveway and back on ramps
then removed the air filter and poked around the fuel lines.

Looking at that short hose, I noticed a really good dripping. Damn hose is too
big, and maybe the coolant is flowing back along the head around the intake
manifold and picking up oils then sliding down the rear of the block and onto
the street. I recall really cranking the clamps down, due to the oversize
nature, but I gave it more attention and got almost another revolution of the
screw and that seems to have slowed it down. There was no indication of
serious drop in the overflow tank from the leak, so I will need to keep and eye
on it.

While the housing was off the car, I decided to deal with some surface
oxidation and sanded and put high temp paint on. That will spiff it up. Then
it decided to rain. So I am now waiting for the weather to stop and dry so I
can button it all up.

Was not pointing fingers. Just wanted to know if I was right that people
complained about fuel economy.
My truck has averaged about 16 mpg over the time I have owned it. Lowest
about 10 and highest about 22 mpg.

Remember that I am converting to imperial from kilometers so not US gallons.

First house I bought was a 4 bed, 2 bath brick on two acres of land with

distance, nice neighborhood.

That property has now been Bulldozed, and there is a 12 unit condo on it..
no yard... no trees. school is closed. Neighbors are "bad" [ie. it ain't
safe after dark], and each unit sells for $280K. plus taxes, condo fees, et
al .. ad nausium... Progress?

When I bought the place I was making $100 a week, plus overtime. I paid it
off in full ahead of time... mostly from side jobs..

The poor slacks living there now don't have a chance... and if they did own
a "condo" , do they really "own it' ? [IMHO ,,, not really]

Re: [MBZ] OT: Starving Youngsters: was 44 years OT

2013-06-11 Thread clay

I won't debate anything else you said but the quote below is just not true. US
manufacturing output is second only to China and that change is relatively
recent:
http://www.aei-ideas.org/2012/12/charts-of-the-day-world-manufacturing-output-2011/

We don't make the things we used to make years ago but we still make a lot. In
fact I've started to look for the "Made In the USA" label as a lifestyle
change. If you aren't you don't have a right to bitch.

Its not always possible of course, my hiking boots were made in Italy, but my
socks were made in the USA, my Redwing workboots were also made in the USA. I
fell into the trap of buying the cheapest whatever for a long time, its going
to take time to turn myself around. Meanwhile I think there are too many people
that bemoan the loss of American jobs while buying made in China junk.

[MBZ] 190D lower radiator hose - more

2013-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond
Finally ordered the lower radiator hose from Amazon, none of the inquiries I'd
made yesterday got back to me yet. I parked the car facing away from the garage
while I did the brakes this afternoon and got a good drip directly under the
hose in question where it turns to go into the radiator. Everything else is dry
so theres nowhere else the leak could be.

Only leaks for an hour or so after shutdown, I'd guess only when pressure is
present. I'll loosen the radiator cap and only drive around town until I get
that replacement hose. Fortunately I don't need to commute until Wednesday of
next week.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Starving Youngsters: was 44 years OT

2013-06-11 Thread Scott Ritchey

MAO: I can't speak to your experience. But there are several factors here.

Expectations: I see too many kids today (including my step children) that
expect to live as well as their parents and they want it all NOW. They do
not (or will not) understand that their parents lived for decades with one
junker car, no air conditioning, no cable or color TV or internet or cell
phone, almost never ate out, almost never made or got long distance calls,
and lived in a rented two room apartment or a room in a boarding house. And
this was after serving years in the military, living in a barracks. But
kids today are convinced that they need all the conveniences that the older
generations spent their whole lives building and saving for, they are
convinced they are entitled to all this stuff, right now, and the businesses
and credit agencies are all too eager to let them have it as they get in
debt over their heads. By the way, this includes college: they wabt it,
they think they need it, they aren't willing to work for it, but they are
willing to go into debt for it.

Second, productivity: The value of whatever you produce must exceed the
value of whatever you consume. Otherwise you are digging the debt hole
deeper, one way or another. With all the laws, regulations, environmental
restrictions, unions, cronyism, etc. in the US, it's almost impossible for
an American to be as productive as a Chinaman, an Indonesian, an Indian,
etc. Our steel mills are gone, little manufacturing remains, mineral
exploitation is fraught with environmental barriers, etc. US agriculture is
doing OK but it employs very few people and the work is harder than most
native=born Americans are willing to do. Bottom line, we as a country are
doing exactly the same thing the young kids are doing: we are borrowing
without limit to support a lifestyle we haven't earned.

On college: college costs are out of sight. Why? Supply and demand. With
federal loans the demand is huge and the supply is limited. The colleges
know that (with federal $$) the students (and taxpayers) will pay whatever
it costs. There is no incentive to control cost. In fact, the opposite is
true: a more costly school is viewed as more exclusive and therefore,
better.

Finally, on jobs: Jobs are created by job creators. These are people that
take great personal risk in hopes of an eventual reward. Most of these
folks fail, often repeatedly. If that's not enough reason to abandon this
effort, we have as a nation created a social, regulatory, and tax
environment that punishes the successful job creator. So when you ask:
where are the jobs, just remember who killed them. It's the same story as
he goose that laid the golden egg.

No it is not a temper tantrum. It is a matter of sharing FACTS related
to someone many of us might find important in dealing with our cars, as
was Rusty. I think many of us were willing to support his efforts in
this business, expecting a similar level of service, or at least hoping
for such, based on initial comms in that regard.

I paid this guy for some basic parts. His person Kerri took the order
and took my money Friday a week ago. She was pleasant and had my info
there. Good enough.

I expected to receive the goods within a few days, she said she would try
to get the order in that Friday afternoon, barring that, Monday. Good
enough. No different from many other orders from Rusty over the years,
this guy is the "new Rusty" basically doing the same thing. No
particular reason to expect a different experience. He takes an order,
ships what he has or passes it on to Worldpac, whatever works.

On Friday morning I sent TF an email asking where the stuff was, thinking
a week was long enough to get stuff shipped out given my previous
experiences. He sent back a msg saying he would get back to me when he
got to the office later on. I heard nothing back on Friday.

I called 2X this morning asking what the story was. 2 different people
answered and said they would pass the msg along for him to call me back.
That was hours ago, no call. He has gone dark. Nice.

Others have bought stuff from this guy and have not received their
orders, and he is not responding to queries -- emails or phone calls. He
has gone dark on them owing them parts/money. Nice.

I did some research to see if I could find out the guy's story. I found
that info about the DUI. That suggests to me we might be dealing with
someone who has responsibility issues, in addition to my and others'
experiences with ordering parts, but you draw your own conclusions based
on that info and my/others' experiences, more FACTS. I found other info
too that is a bit concerning.

Now I have to try to figure out how to either get my stuff, or get my
$150 back, or some combination of the 2. Its not like I am going
destitute over the $150 but it just really pisses me off.

I am upset because I had expected to get this car sorted last week then
drive to my daughter on the past weekend to give her this car, then take
the car she has to my son who now needs a car. This problem has given me
a larger headache and caused some other issues due to lack of
carry-through by this guy. Not the least having my son and my wife on my
ass to get the car deal sorted within a hard time constraint and other
life issues. So it is causing me more headache and likely more money to
get a plane ticket sorted. I have basically lost 10 days on this guy and
his lack of responsiveness having taken my money. That pisses me off
too.

I am interested to know any other parts of the entire story if you, he,
or anyone else can share it with me. So far I have related FACTS as I
know them, but perhaps he has suffered some malady that prevents his
attention to business, or something. I am open to education in that
regard and will consider it, apologize, whatever.

I suggest that anyone else contemplating ordering stuff from this guy
might want to evaluate other alternatives given what I know to be FACTUAL
information about this guy, but, as always, YMMV and you are welcome to
spend your money however you want.
