wood pieces that were in glued and screwed stacking sections; and a jack
slider that was in

matching height sections.
I started out with the jack on the floor, ran it up to full height, and
put the bottom stackable sections on that end of the car. Then I did the
other end of the car.
Then I put the jack on the jack slider which raised the jack the same
distance as the pyramid stands.
I repeated the process until the car was as high as I had planned for it
to be (24?), and then reversed the process when taking it down.
In order to put the pyramids dead center under the jack points on the car,
the 2 layers of wood were staggered to match the curvature of the tire;
beginning with the 12 by (18?) pieces.
Getting the dowel pin holes the same appropriate place in each stackable
section was difficult but doable.
The jack slider stand had 2 by 2 pieces on the sides to keep the jack on
the top piece. If I did another one I would put metal of some sort on the
slider because the jack wheels tended to dig in to the soft wood.

After the kids had all left home, I got rid of the stands since I didn't
have 4 to 6 cars to maintain and the stands took up a fair amount of storage
room.
The cost was low since I got most of the 2 by 12 wood that was waste at a
lumber yard.
In general, this was a system based on varying lengths of 12 by 2 lumber
that was keyed together by short pieces of 5/8 dowel rod, and longer pieces
of 12 by 2 wood that was also keyed together with the top piece having 2
by 2 edge guards to keep the jack wheels on track. The slider arrange was
necessary in order to let the jack roll back and forth as it was raised or
lowered. Raising and lowering the car without the slider tended to pull
the car off the stands or the jack off its stand. The jack slider solved
that problem.

Wow. Bold statement, especially without specifying _which_ LPS
 product.

LPS3 is a waxy oil stuff that is very good at protecting
from rust, and good at keeping moving parts moving. In my
experience, WD-40 is vastly inferior at providing a protective
 coating.

Again, in my experience LPS2 is a superior lubricant compared to
WD-40. I'm not sure how they compare for long term protection
because I use LPS3 for that job.

LPS1 is a dry lubricate once the carrier evaporates. I does not
cause dust to stick, so is suitable for things like the 40ft
telescoping pneumatic masts. It doesn't gum up like WD-40, and in
my experience lubricates at least as well.

I use WD-40 to kill wasps on their nests and to displace water in
ignition systems. It works well for those jobs, but I personally
wouldn't use it for any task that required lubrication - long or
 short term.

My only complaint with LPS is trying to find a local retailer to
 sell it...

It looks like a pair of pliers with a box end wrench on one jaw
and a short stud with a washer base on the other. Put the bushing
on the stud, reach up and start the bushing in the hole and pres
the handle. You're done. Hope the link comes through. kind of
pricy but probably a good idea if you intend to do a lot of them

channel locks to squeeze. Not as easy and a bit fiddly but free.

My version of that would be such:
(new modification for easier use)
2 1/4-20 bolt
1 or 1-1/8 fender washer
1 PVC cap with hole drilled for 1/4 bolt
1/4-20 nut

Instructions:
place fender washer on bolt followed by new shifter bushing. Slide bolt
through bushing opening on the shifter arm. Place PVC cap and 1/4-20
nut onto end of bolt to create a sandwich around the shifter arm. The
idea is that tightening the bolt/nut will push the bushing into the arm.
The PVC cap creates space where the bushing can be pushed by
straddling the opening.

Is that more clear?

Not going to say that I recommend you do this, but my father had an
Austin with suspension that could be pumped up. He used brake fluid. It
is a thin hydraulic oil so no doubt similar to what is in there.
Another alternative might be hydraulic jack oil if you are adventurous.

Re: [MBZ] Water in Trunk

2013-07-03 Thread Rich Thomas
Make sure the drains in the wells are open (they get clogged up easily)
so whatever gets in will drain out.

The water is probably coming in around the rear window seals at the
corners, or you are getting corrosion that is letting in water, or some
combination of the two. This is happening on the SD, not sure what to
do about it.

A window guy told me that replacing the rear window seals on a 126 was
the worst job imaginable, don't know about a 123.

I can't seem to find out what the SAE weight of the oil is.

I don't know if they make a number that low. The stuff is
very runny, almost like kerosene. I'd stick to the real

that Royco 5606H I had was on a list, at least at one time.

no response. He figures that might be why TF has shut down the 800 #,
nervous things are closing in. Says he has been busy chasing dopers the
last coupla days but has not forgotten about this guy, will let me know
 what sorts out.

the ones that I didn't already know. There sees to be a strong bias
towards IT--software engineers, network admins, etc., which I guess should
not be a surprise given that IT people love to tinker and appreciate
 well-made machinery.

I've noticed that there's a strong bent of active participants on this list
toward detail-oriented professions. I suspect that many car people are
this way, and certainly for e-mail lists like ours it probably helps to
keep our interest when each oil thread contains some very slightly
different information. :)

That said, LinkedIn's algorithm is creepy smart. I have no idea how but
they have strongly recommended people I know from church, and some very
distant business associates, with whom I share no near business connections
and haven't exchanged email from an address LinkedIn knows. I sometimes
flip through the chart just to see who they suggest, though I'm generally
pretty picky about who my links are.

[MBZ] Transmission W124 91 300D

2013-07-03 Thread Larry T
I bought one of the transmissions from Sun Valley through Rusty in
Dec 2011. A few days ago I noticed that 1st gear is not being selected
when I push the pedal to the floor when leaving a stop sign. It does
not go into 1st using the lever either so I guess that lets the pedal
switch out...

I checked the switch under the accelerator pedal and it is not
blocked or being prevented from engaging.

Is this a problem that might be transmission related or is it
more likely a switch, wiring or a vacuum line? Are there other black
boxes that might be at fault. I know you cannot diagnose it long
distance, -- I am just looking for a best guess reply. I know I need
to have the shop that installed it check things but I hope to find a
cheaper way

I also sent the above to Sun Valley -- but i wanted the experts here to
tell me something good ;-) BTW, it comes with a 2 yr unltd mileage
warranty -- but not the labor

thx

Is the cable that controls shift timing connected adjusted correctly?
Considering though it still doesn't work with the lever in 2, I'm
guessing it's an internal fault. Perhaps try a dexIII fluid filter
change with some lubegard additive to start? Just throwing out ideas

There are good service records up until 300k, and it now has 470k on the

run.

So far I have done some basic things such as cleaned the tank filter,
blown out the line, fitted two new fuel filters from MB Spares, checked
for a broken timing chain/correct engine and injector pump timing and
they appear OK. Fuel is pulsing around each injector line, and there is
test light voltage at the glow plugs. Am looking to do a compression
test next when I can get the fittings.

The car was driven to a doctor's appointment one day and just refused to
start again, and had to be towed.

I thought I had read that these motors were capable of quite high

Another possible way for this problem to go:
If it always starts in 1st, maybe it _*is *_starting in 1st but is
slower than normal because the Turbo is not spooling properly? Hmmm...

I checked the operation of the vacuum operated thing next to the intake
manifold - it moves freely. I will remove the vacuum hose and see if it
will move when vacuum is applied

If the turbo was damaged or blown I am positive I would have heard
unusual noises. So far, none.

Most likely is a leaking suction hose to the lift pump, or a bad o-
ring at the fitting on the lift pump. Try putting the car on a steep
slope nose down -- the fitting or hose will leak fuel OUT under these
conditions.

Leaking suction lines will prevent starting. Makes it run badly, too.

Fuel should not pulse at the injector fittings, it should run all
over the place.

How long has it been since the valves have been adjusted?

 Any other thoughts, someone?

A fella on the OzBenz list has a mate with a 124 300D that was taken to a
doctors appointment and 2 hours later wouldn't start.
Here is his cry for help:

I am trying to get a friend's W124 300D going and was wondering what the
expected mileage life could be for one of these engines?

There are good service records up until 300k, and it now has 470k on the
clock. Although the motor cranks over and nearly starts it will just not
 run.

So far I have done some basic things such as cleaned the tank filter,
blown out the line, fitted two new fuel filters from MB Spares, checked for
a broken timing chain/correct engine and injector pump timing and they
appear OK. Fuel is pulsing around each injector line, and there is test
light voltage at the glow plugs. Am looking to do a compression test next
when I can get the fittings.

The car was driven to a doctor's appointment one day and just refused to
start again, and had to be towed.

I thought I had read that these motors were capable of quite high
mileages, but am now fearing it may not have enough compression to fire.
 Could this be likely?
 Any experienced thoughts?

 Thanks in advance,
 Col.

My guess is a busted headgasket leaking between cylinders, so in fact
taking out two cylinder, I would think it would run on five cylinders.
Perhaps fuel shut off valve? However I don't know enough about the OM 603
to be able to come up with specifics.

So how creepy is this?

A coupla weeks ago one night late I got an email from them suggesting I
link up with others I might know. So just sorta surfing I scroll down
the list and see a lot of people I used to work with, people I know,
people who I sorta knew or heard of but were friends with others on my
list. That was kinda fun, but no one I cared to friend or whatever
you do there. I hit this one whose picture looks sorta familiar, and
the first name is sorta familiar, and I look closer and see it was a
girlfriend from some time before I was married, which was 31 years and 1
week ago. I just about sh*t. Turns out she is linked to a guy I know,
two away, but that must include about a million people, and there were
only a coupla 2 away people on the whole list. So how she popped up
there I have no idea, but it really creeped me out. I figure they must
be using some kind of data mining someway somehow, but how she got
snared in that I cannot imagine. Maybe the NSA are behind Linkedin?

The years do not appear to have been as kind to her as they have to me,
either!
