And what does "La Migra" mean? I tried looking that up on Google's

Yup - check the tank vent line.

Another thought, what happens if the return fuel line from the injectors to
the tank is clogged? I've never heard of it happening, but ???

Re: [MBZ] rare on mercedes topic more 300td 1982 problems

2013-11-08 Thread OK Don
Two things come to mind, but neither might be related - you get what you
pay for!

1 - I bought a '76 300D once for the rust free NV body because the PO
thought the engine needed to be rebuilt because it was hard to start. I
found my 10,000 mile factory crate engine hard to start once transplanted
from the rusted out body to this one. I found a spot where the steel line
from the tank turns upward in the engine compartment that had rubbed
against the frame and worn a small hole. Cut the line there, spliced it
with a short piece of fuel hose, and never had any trouble starting the car
again (until the start died that is). The downside to this explanation is
that the car ran great once it was started, it just lost the prime and took
forever to get enough fuel to the IP to start, so this is probably not your
problem, though I'd look at every inch of the fuel delivery (and return)
path.

2 - is the vent for the fuel tank clear? No air in, no fuel out. They can
become clogged and cause all kinds of hard to diagnose trouble.

Only event that replicates that symptom in my case was a leaky primer pump.
Old one bit the dust and I replaced it with a real bosch pump. The old one had
been sucking air and not letting me get enough fuel through the IP. When
stopped, the prime would be lost, and I could crank it all day to no effect.

Did you mean the metal line or the flex line between tank and metal

i DID replace those hoses within the last couple of weeks (the ones

only inspected the tank to line hose and removed and reconnected it

Not a bad idea to check to make sure one isn't smashed flat somewhere

Folks

I've been having problems getting my 1982 300td to run correctly.
And yes i'm running it on WVO.

Let's see if i can give some background and tell you all the things
that i have done.

About 3 weeks ago i drove it 60 miles to atlanta and back and
basically limped home at about 40 mph.

SO, here's what i did. I drained the tank and checked that the tank
screen was clear. I blew out the tank to prefilter line. I
installed a clean prefilter and also changed the main spin on fuel
filter. No improvement.

Then i pulled all the injectors and pop tested them. Two had a very
bad spray pattern, so i replaced them with tested working
injectors. At this point the car ran pretty well, but was really
hard to start. (yes, the valves have been adjusted in the past 6000
miles)

It felt like fuel starvation and i started thinking that i have an
air leak somewhere.

At some point in all this i got a couple of ebay, allegedly Bosh
primer pumps, white box uro, i guess with the Bosch part number. I
installed one of them and didn't like the way it felt, but left it on.

Then at some point, i went to the flaps looking for a sealing
washer for the main fuel filter advance and autozone both had
about 3 copper washers, nothing!!

I replaced the o ring in the main filter bolt, but didn't replace
the aluminum washer. Mine is the 1 O ring 1 washer style bolt.

Killed my battery when it wouldn't start and had them charge it for
a few hours. Then i returned and did a lot of priming and got it
going.

Now i'm trying to remember what i did next. I guess i drove it a
little and it felt pretty good.

At some point in all of this i drilled the T connectors in the main
vacuum hose from pump to booster. After i did that, the key shutoff
started working again. I had been stopping the engine using the
lever under the hood.

I am now starting to think that may have over drilled because the
transmission shifts started to seem like they were a bit too soft.
I may have messed up some restriction orifice in the T.

This story goes on and on over about a month. I may have some of
this out of chronology but i'm trying.

On tuesday afternoon, i drove from Athens, GA to near Pensacola,
FL, a distance of about 450 miles each way. I was dragging a 1000
lb letterpress on the trailer on the to Pensacola. When i started
that trip, the rig would only make about 40 mph, but after a few
miles, it picked up and i ran about 65 most of the way down i-85
and 65.

I delivered the press and turned around to come back to athens. I
only shut the engine down a few times and it always started ok, but
sometimes it does a strange thing. With a hot engine, i'll try to
start it. I'll turn the engine over WAY too many times it it will
not start. THEN i'll try again and it will start instantly. It does
the same pattern every time.

Now, back to my return trip tuesday night/ wednesday. I went about
200 miles till i was on the atlanta side of montgomery and the car
would slow to about 40 mph then after a while it would pick up
and do better, but never more than about 60.

I changed the slightly dirty pre filter. I noticed that the new uro
trash primer pump seemed to be leaking, so i put the old bosch one
back on and it seemed to pump better and didn't leak.

So i limped home and went to sleep.

On Thursday, i messed with the car some more at the shop. I changed
a bunch of crush washers on banjo fittings on the IP and on the
filter body. I changed the fuel filter bolt with another one i had
of the same type. I had trouble getting it primed again and ran the
battery down. After charging it a while, i got it started and
drove home. About midnite last night i started the car and went to
the bank. It didn't run well. Today, i went to start . no joy,
i ran out of battery. I went to start my isuzu npr to use it and i
ran out of battery there, too.

So, i charged the battery for 40 minutes (6 amp charger) and got
started and delivered a 300 lb type case up into the foothills of
the mountains in Dahlonega, Ga a distance of about 60 miles. I
didn't shut down and returned to the office. The car went 60 to 65
the entire way. I returned to the office. I un hitched my trailer
and considered swapping the main vacuum hose assembly with one on
another car, but only thought about it.

I started the warm engine with the usual over cranking to no result
and then start the second try. I put it into gear and pressed the
throttle and had no increase in RPM on the tach or increased engine
sound. The engine has a slight bit of roughness at idle. With the
transmission in park or neutral, i could rev the engine, but in
gear i couldn't get any RPM. I final

[MBZ] rare on mercedes topic more 300td 1982 problems

2013-11-08 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

Folks

I've been having problems getting my 1982 300td to run correctly. And
yes i'm running it on WVO.

I installed a
clean prefilter and also changed the main spin on fuel filter. No
improvement.

Then i pulled all the injectors and pop tested them. Two had a very
bad spray pattern, so i replaced them with tested working injectors.
At this point the car ran pretty well, but was really hard to start.
(yes, the valves have been adjusted in the past 6000 miles)

It felt like fuel starvation and i started thinking that i have an air
leak somewhere.

At some point in all this i got a couple of ebay, allegedly Bosh
primer pumps, white box uro, i guess with the Bosch part number. I
installed one of them and didn't like the way it felt, but left it on.

Then at some point, i went to the flaps looking for a sealing washer
for the main fuel filter advance and autozone both had about 3
copper washers, nothing!!

I replaced the o ring in the main filter bolt, but didn't replace the
aluminum washer. Mine is the 1 O ring 1 washer style bolt.

Killed my battery when it wouldn't start and had them charge it for a
few hours. Then i returned and did a lot of priming and got it going.

Now i'm trying to remember what i did next. I guess i drove it a
little and it felt pretty good.

At some point in all of this i drilled the T connectors in the main
vacuum hose from pump to booster. After i did that, the key shutoff
started working again. I had been stopping the engine using the lever
under the hood.

I am now starting to think that may have over drilled because the
transmission shifts started to seem like they were a bit too soft. I
may have messed up some restriction orifice in the T.

This story goes on and on over about a month. I may have some of this
out of chronology but i'm trying.

On tuesday afternoon, i drove from Athens, GA to near Pensacola, FL, a
distance of about 450 miles each way. I was dragging a 1000 lb
letterpress on the trailer on the to Pensacola. When i started that
trip, the rig would only make about 40 mph, but after a few miles, it
picked up and i ran about 65 most of the way down i-85 and 65.

I delivered the press and turned around to come back to athens. I only
shut the engine down a few times and it always started ok, but
sometimes it does a strange thing. With a hot engine, i'll try to
start it. I'll turn the engine over WAY too many times it it will not
start. THEN i'll try again and it will start instantly. It does the
same pattern every time.

Now, back to my return trip tuesday night/ wednesday. I went about 200
miles till i was on the atlanta side of montgomery and the car would
slow to about 40 mph then after a while it would pick up and do
better, but never more than about 60.

I changed a
bunch of crush washers on banjo fittings on the IP and on the filter
body. I changed the fuel filter bolt with another one i had of the
same type. I had trouble getting it primed again and ran the battery
down. After charging it a while, i got it started and drove home.
About midnite last night i started the car and went to the bank. It
didn't run well. Today, i went to start . no joy, i ran out of
battery. I went to start my isuzu npr to use it and i ran out of
battery there, too.

So, i charged the battery for 40 minutes (6 amp charger) and got
started and delivered a 300 lb type case up into the foothills of the
mountains in Dahlonega, Ga a distance of about 60 miles. I didn't shut
down and returned to the office. The car went 60 to 65 the entire way.
I returned to the office. I un hitched my trailer and considered
swapping the main vacuum hose assembly with one on another car, but
only thought about it.

I started the warm engine with the usual over cranking to no result
and then start the second try. I put it into gear and pressed the
throttle and had no increase in RPM on the tach or increased engine
sound. The engine has a slight bit of roughness at idle. With the
transmission in park or neutral, i could rev the engine, but in gear i
couldn't get any RPM. I finally got a little bit of increase in RPM
and VERY SLOWLY limped home but it wouldn't pull much of a hill. I
experimented with it a little and could get some forward motion, but
was not able to pul

La Migra is the Mexican's term for a US Immigration Officer or Border Patrol
agent or for a group of such agents collectively. In common parlance the
noun "Migra" is often modified by the adjective "pinchi" or "pinche"
indicating a certain level of disrespect.

Wonder how many and how often we cross such interesting paths and never

"strangers" are not so really "strange," after all, especially for one

Yes, it is amazing. It's a good idea to ask, as you say.

So what is interesting is that a black officer profiled you, whom I surmise
is (are?) a white man. I am guessing they were looking for people whose
shades fall somewhere between you two.

Along these lines Karl Denninger has been posting on his blog the last few
days. Thank you Mitch Haley for turning me (us) on to this guy a few years ago.

New Mexico should be up in arms over this.

stop supporting the war on dugs. stop supporting all the wars. all of
these issues then disappear overnight

i know a guy who is a long hall trucker. it's competitive and he doesn't
make that much money. he says there is a 3% surcharge on credit cards so
he pays cash. now he fears being robbed by government agents and is not
sure what to do. sweet, huh?

Certainly there is precedent of police departments seizing property that
was "used in the committing of a crime", with all the unscrupulous
extensions, but having individual officers do that and say, "Felons and

[MBZ] OT - Sondy Tale

2013-11-08 Thread WILTON

Yep, another Sondy Tale and a little more.

SMALL WORLD
By Wilton Strickland

(The following tales of some unexpected, chance meetings illustrate what a
really "small" world we occupy. Though these meetings occurred much more
recently, surprisingly, they relate directly back to my time as a teenager.)
On the Sunday morning after Christmas, 1978, while I was Director of
Engineering at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland, I had slept late, so I was
the first to enter the dining hall when it opened for lunch at 1100. I was
taking a seat at my table when I noticed a young man of about 34, a master
sergeant whom I had met briefly when he arrived from the States the
afternoon before, go through the cafeteria line. I asked him and some
others to join me, and in a few minutes, there were six or eight at my table
enjoying a rousing conversation.
The subject of Christmas came up, of course, and the newly-arrived sergeant
commented that he always gets a little depressed at Christmas. Somebody
asked him why, and the sergeant replied that his father had been killed in a
plane crash in his family's back yard on Christmas morning when he was a
little boy. This jogged my memory of a similar case near my home when I was
14. I thought I had noticed a bit of North Carolina accent in the sergeant's
speech, and I asked him, "Where's home, where are you from originally?" He
replied, "North Carolina." I said, "Yes, I thought so. Me, too. Where in
NC?" "Rocky Mount," he replied. I exclaimed, "I'm from Nashville!" (Ten
miles west of Rocky Mount.) Then he replied, "Well, I'm really from
Battleboro." (A small village immediately north of Rocky Mount.)
In amazement, I responded, "Oh, Gosh! I remember the morning your father
was killed. It was Christmas morning, 1948. You were four years old. You
and your mother were standing in your back yard watching as your father and
his friend showed-off the friend's new airplane by doing a little
stunt-flying over your home. Your father was a passenger in the aircraft
flown by a local rich boy who had wrecked several new cars his dad had given
him, and on this particular morning, you and your mother watched as he
crashed his new airplane in your back yard, killing himself and your father.
I remember it as if it were yesterday, yet, here we sit, finally meeting
thirty years later in Greenland!" It is, indeed, a small world, isn't it?
Another small-world indicator: Several years ago, I arrived at a house here
in Goldsboro to do a home inspection for a client who was buying the house.
I approached a man in the garage of the empty house who identified himself
as the seller, Lucian Vick. I introduced myself and began the inspection
there in the garage. For several years, I had occasionally heard the name,
Lucian Vick, around town, and it always sounded vaguely familiar, somehow,
as it did this day.
A few minutes after I started the inspection, I asked Mr. Vick, "By the way,
Lucian, where are you from originally?" He responded, "Nashville." I
suddenly realized why the name had seemed familiar; I turned quickly to him
and exclaimed, "I'm from Nashville, too! You're the little three or
four-year-old boy who was playing around us and under the table the summer
of 1956 while I was tutoring your brother, Johnny, in calculus and
analytical geometry! Your father had hired me to help Johnny with a
correspondence course from NC State College that summer."
Another one: In early 2004, a Rotary Club friend of my wife, Alice, was
visiting our home in Goldsboro for a few minutes. During our conversation,
I asked him, "By the way, Frank, where are you from originally?" He told
me, then added, "My dad was from Whitakers, in Nash County; my mom is from
Nashville." I replied, "We're from Nashville, too! What's her name?"
"Anne Myrick," he answered. I exclaimed, "She's the pretty, sweet little 3
or 4-year-old daughter of the Stedman's Grocery Store manager in Nashville
in the early to mid-50's. Many days at about closing time while I was
working there, she and her mom would arrive to give her dad a ride home.
Anne would come running into the store, give me a hug and pull at me to play
with her. I would often lift her and set her on the edge of a sales counter
and talk to her and play little child games with her while her dad completed
the day's tally at the cash register and her mom beamed with pride nearby.
I've often wondered what had happened to her over the last 50+ years."
And another one: Several years ago, while I was in a family waiting room
at the local hospital awaiting news from the surgeon who was doing
cancer-related surgery on Alice, the hospital chaplain, Richard Hunt, came
in to wait with me. We had visited briefly with Richard and his wife
several times at Community Arts Council functions, where Alice had been
Executive Director for many years. Sometime during our wait at the
hospital, Richard asked me were I
