Re: [MBZ] Another Q for you - just to keep your minds sharp

2014-01-16 Thread arche...@embarqmail.com

Emergency items for '83 300D:

long flat blade screw driver for primary filter
medium flat and phillips screwdrivers
small flat and phillips screwdrivers
large end wrench for secondary filter
channelock, vicegrip, needlenose, and sliplock pliers
1/2" drive socket and breakover handle for lug nuts
set of 3/8" wrenches with ratchet handle
multimeter
rolls of 12, 14, and 16 gauge wire
assorted bulbs and fuses
plastic sheet to lie on
3' fuel line
3' return line
3' vacuum line
radiator hose wrap-around tape
plastic tape
epoxy steel
gorilla glue
2 gallons of water
quart of ATF
5 qts of oil
wheel chock
and probably several other items I can't remember off hand.

This may seem like a lot, but it all goes easily into 2 gallon plastic
freezer bags that fit in gulley on the side of the trunk; except, of
course, for the oil which sits against the back of the trunk and the
water which goes in the cab. On out-of-state trips I also take a spare
water pump.

Some of the later ones came with a tool to guide the spare tire/wheel onto
the hub - found one in the SDL kit, then made a goal of adding them to
every kit - sure makes aligning that first lug bolt easy!

[MBZ] Microwave Ovens on End

2014-01-16 Thread arche...@embarqmail.com
Does anyone know if microwave ovens can be operated sitting on the end
opposite the electronics?
I don't see why it wouldn't work, and I doubt there is a tilt mechanism
such as in small electric heaters, but thought I'd ask since it's a slow
day.
The reason is, I'd like to sit my tall coffee cup in one of the very
small microwaves with it sitting on a long worktable. That way I can
reheat the coffee when it gets cold without interrupting work.

Thanks,
Gerry

Depends on how stiff the frame is.
People used to stick 126mm 6 speed hubs in 120mm steel frames all the time.
You sort of needed two hands to spread the triangle and one hand to stick the
wheel in.

Can you pull a lock washer or two off of the axle? If it's quick release you
might make the axle stick out too far past the nuts but an extra 3mm of axle
probably doesn't matter.

They have been doing the RFID thing in Europe for a while. A great way to do

Just had a briefing today at work from a security consultant on the Target

[MBZ] OT - 'Nother Sondy Tale - Panama City

2014-01-16 Thread WILTON

Yep, 'nother Sondy Tale already.

PANAMA CITY BEACH
By Wilton Strickland

My year as Director of Engineering at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland, from
4 February, 1978, to 8 February, 1979, was extremely busy, enjoyable,
interesting and possibly the most productive assignment I had during my 22
years on Air Force active duty. The scenery in the area is fantastically
beautiful, and the people with whom I worked were very professional,
agreeable and accommodating. I never had time to think about being lonely -
I was undoubtedly the busiest person on base and surely traveled more than
anybody else there. I was careful not to remind anybody about how my time
away was accumulating, though the Base Commander did balk a bit in October,
'78, when I went to 'im for his signature on a request form for a trip to
Panama City Beach, FL, to give a briefing at a USAF Pavements Conference.
When I laid the form in front of 'im and said, "Please sign this. I need to
go to Panama City Beach, FL, to brief the Kulusuk Airfield drainage
project." He stormed (in mock anger), "What the Hell is this? You just got
back a couple of weeks ago!" I responded, "Well, it was a couple of months
ago, and I'm just trying to do my duty, and you know - I'm going to DO my
duty, and you know I'll do it well. Here's a message from Headquarters that
says I need to go to Panama City Beach." I handed 'im the message; he
glanced at it and said, "It doesn't say you HAVE to go; it says you SHOULD
go." I responded, "Yes, I know, but you know how I feel about doing my
duty." As I was turning to leave with the signed document, I reminded him,
"You know, I need to go to Copenhagen the first two weeks in December, and,
oh, by the way, I'm taking Havbro (Danish contractor's chief engineer) with
me to Panama City." "Whoa, whoa, wait a minute," he sputtered, "Why does
Havbro need to go?" "For long-term continuity," I responded. He persisted,
"But, if he goes, why do you need to go?" I also persisted, "Kulusuk is MY
project; they want ME to brief it, and they're going to talk about lots of
other things that can be beneficial to the base after I'm gone. For
example, we have a big runway re-paving project coming up next summer. That's
why Havbro should go."

I left Sondy aboard a New York Air National Guard C-130 on Friday morning
before the Panama City Beach conference began on Monday, and made it home to
Southern California to see my wife and two sons for a day and a half or so
before proceeding to Florida on Sunday afternoon. Havbro left Sondy on
Saturday aboard a USAF C-141 to McGuire AFB, NJ, and arrived at Panama City
Beach early Sunday morning. Our rooms were ON the beach - the beach
literally outside our doors - quite a pleasant, nearly tropical - and a bit
shocking - change from the arctic conditions at Sondy, where the temperature
was already hovering near 0° F.

At breakfast the next morning, Havbro told us about going to a restaurant
and bar a few miles down the beach the previous night and stayed until after
taxis had stopped running.
For a while, he and his newly-found Air Force friends thought they were
stranded and were going to have to walk the 4 or 5 miles back to the hotel.
Finally, a man driving a very ragged old car came along and offered them a
ride. During the few minutes riding to the hotel, the man told them that he
had just bought the car the previous day for $10. Everybody agreed that the
tires alone surely must be worth at least $10. Havbro remarked that he'd
never ridden in a $10 car before. We quickly reminded him that he had
ridden in a worthless car on $10 tires.

My briefing on the Kulusuk drainage project went very well, but members of
the audience seemed to be much more interested in the fantastic scenery in
the backgrounds of my slides. I tended to agree and easily veered several
times into a Greenland travelogue and told them that they should volunteer
for a government "all-expenses-paid" trip there sometime. (Traditionally,
since the early 1950's, anyway, one of the biggest threats in the Air Force
has been "getting sent to Thule," - in the far north of Greenland.) I
assured them that for me an assignment to Sondrestrom was a lot better than
an assignment to Korea. "Before my assignment to Greenland, friends were
telling me I should volunteer for Korea. Well, first, I would never leave
the family voluntarily, and Sondrestrom has worked out much better for me.
I've been able to talk to my wife a couple of times a week, and because of
Greenland's proximity to the States, I've been able to get home to see the
family, at least briefly, about every two and a half months. My job has
also given me the opportunity to take several short trips to other very
interesting sites in Greenland. 'Even visiting Panama City Beach right now
and will be going to Copenhagen the first two weeks in December. How's that
for an assignment in the "briar patc

I am fortunate enough to have the original tool roll and its contents in
my 300D but is there anything specific you would add to it?
I don't recall the exact contents of the factory roll but I assume that
MB gave some considerable thought to the contents.
Do new motorcycles still come with a basic tool kit? I recall that my
Honda bikes did back in the 60's and 70's.

Also, I plan to make up one to carry in my truck and another for the
boat. I used to carry a big plastic tool box around in my truck whenever
I left town but it was cumbersome and I think a tool roll would be less
of an issue as it would take less space. I would need a second box or
container of some sort for other things like tape, wire, pull ties etc
but that should not be too much trouble to put in a zip lock bag or
something similar.

The boat is another story as spare spark plugs and fuel filters and such
might be more of an issue for it than for the wheeled vehicles.

Ok, so if it just mounts to the panel it should not be a problem.
I like the idea of attaching a nut with epoxy and then running a short
bolt through from behind.
Or, I could likely attach a short bolt with epoxy and then put the nut
on the back of the panel. That might work even better.

Will check it out and let you know if I think I might need the pocket

I might have a working pocket. You would need to paint it to match your
interior.

I faked a way with the pockets on Gump. I too had corner connector failures.
A little bit of a landing to use, so I epoxied a nut to the pocket, then used a
stubby bolt/screw to go through the panel. A washer on the back help to both
shim and to reduce tear through

I have not tried to find any as I had heard long ago that they were not
readily available.

My passenger side is fine.
The driver's side is ok except for the little corner spots where the
pins go through.

They look fine from the outside.
I sort of plan to fix with epoxy and maybe drill holes through the outer
part in order to put screws in to hold it in place.

Not original but this is an old driver and not a show car.
Wouldn't mind coming up with a way that does not require the holes to be
drilled but so far have not determined what that might be.

Anyone know if these just mount to the inside door panel? Could I fasten
it onto that with some form of rivet from the back and then install the
whole thing? Or does it mount to the metal itself via the original hardware?

tool is forged in one piece? I hope it doesn't mean the blister pack

At any rate, I agree with the Amazon reviewers who say the helical

extractor on that flare fitting, I would have had to hammer it on and
then I would have had to hammer it out of the tool.

Now the bleeder is stuck in the control valve, and since the other
end of the line goes into the control valve ABOVE the bleeder, I
can't easily cut the line to put the extractor on the nut. Why would
the control valve bleeder be below the outlet pipe to the spheres, is
there a good reason to make sure the air goes to the spheres and not
to the bleeder?
