[MBZ] A/C air filter, 126 model

2014-03-07 Thread Ralph Robertson
Is there an air conditioner, air (dust) filter, for the '87 300SDL, A/C
system? I have some type of sponge particles coming out of the dash air
vent, but I cannot find where a filter might be a part of this vehicle's
A/C. system. It appears that in the 124, 1984-1995 vehicles, there is a
filter replacement available, but not for the 126.

I wish my AC issue was as simple.

I think likely the valves on my old york style compressor have given up

The clutch locks on but the pressures are equal on both high and low

My recollection is that water will dissolve shellac.

Not too sure about this, but if it does, it's slow.  Potters use shellac to
draw designs on green pots, then wash with water for relief texture.

Of course they then put em in kilns at 2200F or so.. and that works just fine
to 'disolve' the shellac... (c:

Driver with the dash cam could have avoided that. The truck with trailer was visible from a long way off, easy to see him roll right through the stop into the path of the vehicle the dash cam. I can see the hood dive when driver finally hit the brakes, way too late. Didn't make much of an attempt to steer around either.

Re: [MBZ] OT - video of accident from dash cam

2014-03-07 Thread Randy Bennell
I agree to some extent. It appears to me that the driver actually moved
to the left a bit and it might have been better to go to the right.
However, there is always a reaction time and at 60 or 70 mph there is
not a whole lot of time to decide. I think the camera makes it a bit
deceptive. We watch it several times and we then know what is coming and
think I would have done better than that but the bottom line is that
when one is surprised one has to decide and then do something very
quickly. I suppose moving toward the left lane makes sense when
something is moving into your lane from the right.
It is true that we can see the truck coming to the road for some
distance but we expect the truck to stop. If you count the time from
when you know the truck does not stop until the time that the impact
occurs, it is about 2 seconds. At 60 mph that is 88 feet per second and
therefore only about 175 feet.
The truck approaching the road with the trailer is not going all that
fast. He looks like he will stop but he does not.
It is fortunate that the impact is essentially on the side of the box
and not on the driver's door of the truck that got hit.
Also, maybe a good thing that the vehicle that hit him was a full sized
pickup and not a small car.
Did you notice the generator being thrown out of the box over the side
of the truck?

You were making it sound like the replacement of the activated charcoal filter

Fortunately this filter doesn't require regular replacement, not to mention

Well, you should be wary and looking for escape routes etc but this
fellow said he was on his way home from Winnipeg so he had been on the
highway at 60 mph or more for at couple of hours. That sort of thing
lulls you into a false sense of security.
Around town, we should be looking back and forth like an owl at
intersections and should have our foot off the gas and shielding the

If we braked everytime we saw a possible threat, we would be run down
from behind.

And NEVER go where you cannot see.
I recall entering an intersection to cross and there was a van to my
left waiting to make a left turn.
I stepped on the brake and slowed right down as I could not see through
the van.

Then a big Lincoln blew through the intersection.
Not sure where he came from. Maybe he ran the red or else he was making
a left from the other direction, but if I had gone out past the van I
would have either hit him or have been hit by him.

That must have been 30 years ago but it is something I have never forgotten.

I've had very good success in handling oil of wintergreen by using
hypodermic needles that are used with diabetic injection of insulin.

They are quite available at any pharmacy without prescription. You can
suck up the oil without touching it from the container, and the nice tiny
needle allows you to inject the oil of wintergreen with precision at the
parting line between the thread and nut [ or thread and block or what ever
the case may be]. Second applications are easily done and the oil of
wintergreen can be preserved either by placing the cap back on over the
needle, or simply squirting it back in original container, since the needle
is sterile to start with.

Just FWIW.

If the screws were locked with shellac, alcohol is a logical
choice to dissolve the shellac - petroleum derived solvents
won't do much to loosen shellac. Standard methanol from the
paint department is the usual solvent for shellac.

If you need a penetrant to help removing stuck screws, methyl
salicylate (synthetic oil of wintergreen) does a better job than
any of the commercial ones or the mix of ATF acetone. It's a
bit volatile, so, you need to keep reapplying it to keep a
puddle of liquid that'll work its way along the threads.

Re: [MBZ] OT - video of accident whilst sexting

2014-03-07 Thread Hendrik and Fay
I think you'll find that research indicates that talking and listening
whilst driving does increase the chance of an accident.
The brain is a computer and it has limited resources, once some of those
resources are diverted to something else, less is available for the
primary task.
It could be argued that Woman do better at multi tasking and therefore
should be better when it comes to driving and talking.

I don't use the phone when I am driving, mainly because it is an
expensive fine if busted and I also feel that I do get distracted when I
am on the phone. I can feel my brain instantly switching off the task of
driving as soon as the phone rings.

As a test you can talk on the phone and then reply to an email, how does
that work for you?
Or try to reverse parallel park while composing a text message,
according to your proposition that driving and talking on the phone is
easy, this should be easy for you.
Or even watch a TV show and natter on the phone, how much of that TV
show do you recall?
Basically you are asking your brain to do two different things at the
same time and some may be able to do this quite well but most can't.

Sure driving a vehicle is not the same as composing an email but the
problem arise if the routine is broken by unexpected events. Basically
the brain is on auto pilot and diverting processing power to the phone
call, so even though you see the ball roll out from behind the parked
car, it takes longer for the brain to process that information and
provide a warning that a child may be running after that ball.

So yes I agree that driving and talking on the phone is not hard but the
hard thing is to respond to extraordinary circumstances and yes some get
that far caught up in the conversation that they even miss the basic
things like traffic lights and stop signs.
Obviously drivers with lots of experience would do better than some
spotty faced teenager with little driving experience but everyone tunes
out to a certain extend.

Also with today's technology of message banks and call diversion and
such, there is no need to instantly pick up the phone. Is the call so
important you are willing to risk your or others lives?

http://unews.utah.edu/old/p/062206-1.html
Actually I did my multi combination truck test a while back and whilst I
could have a chat with the driving instructor/tester most times, there
where a couple of times I had to use all my brain power to accomplish
the task at hand.

Re: [MBZ] OT - video of accident whilst sexting

2014-03-07 Thread OK Don
There is a phrase in aviation: aviate, navigate, communicate. It means
that this is the order of importance:
1) Aviate - fly the aircraft (driving - drive the car)
2) Navigate - know where you are and where you are going (driving - same
thing)
3) Communicate - talk to the controller and weather people (driving -
talking at all)
You only do the #3 when you are not being challenged by #'s 1 2.

There is also the concept of the sterile cockpit at critical times
(landing) that forbids none task related communication among crew members
and passengers (in small craft). I can relate this to having to tell the
kids to shut up when I was negotiating unknown highway interchanges at 70
mph (113 KMH for Hendrik) in rush hour.

While you are moving in three dimensions, the weather is more of a
challenge, and you are generally faster in an aircraft than a car, the car
is closer to the ground and other hard objects most of the time.

I think you'll find that research indicates that talking and listening
whilst driving does increase the chance of an accident.
The brain is a computer and it has limited resources, once some of those
resources are diverted to something else, less is available for the
primary

task.
It could be argued that Woman do better at multi tasking and therefore
should be better when it comes to driving and talking.

I don't use the phone when I am driving, mainly because it is an
expensive

fine if busted and I also feel that I do get distracted when I am on the
phone. I can feel my brain instantly switching off the task of driving as
soon as the phone rings.

As a test you can talk on the phone and then reply to an email, how does
that work for you?
Or try to reverse parallel park while composing a text message, according
to your proposition that driving and talking on the phone is easy, this
should be easy for you.
Or even watch a TV show and natter on the phone, how much of that TV show
do you recall?
Basically you are asking your brain to do two different things at the
same

time and some may be able to do this quite well but most can't.

Sure driving a vehicle is not the same as composing an email but the
problem arise if the routine is broken by unexpected events. Basically
the
brain is on auto pilot and diverting processing power to the phone call,
so
even though you see the ball roll out from behind the parked car, it
takes
longer for the brain to process that information and provide a warning
that

a child may be running after that ball.

So yes I agree that driving and talking on the phone is not hard but the
hard thing is to respond to extraordinary circumstances and yes some get
that far caught up in the conversation that they even miss the basic
things

like traffic lights and stop signs.
Obviously drivers with lots of experience would do better than some
spotty

faced teenager with little driving experience but everyone tunes out to a
certain extend.

Also with today's technology of message banks and call diversion and
such,

there is no need to instantly pick up the phone. Is the call so important
you are willing to risk your or others lives?

Actually I did my multi combination truck test a while back and whilst I
could have a chat with the driving instructor/tester most times, there
where a couple of times I had to use all my brain power to accomplish the
task at hand.

[MBZ] 34 Hour week?

2014-03-07 Thread arche...@embarqmail.com

Some Porsche employees have got quite used to working just 34 hours a
week for the same wage as a standard 40-hour week.

Their boss Uwe Hück, referred to in certain circles as the German Chuck
Norris, thinks a more relaxed working schedule could be introduced for
most of the country's workforce - if not for the whole of Europe.

“Productivity in Germany is extremely high,” he told the taz newspaper
on Wednesday. “This is good but we do need to give people a break. We
need working hours more suited to the intensity of output.”

Hück, a hard-working Christian who never takes time off and claims to
pray twice a day, joined Porsche in 1985 as a car painter and inched his
way up the ranks to become one of the company's most important employees.

Growing up in a children's home after losing his parents, he is hazy
about his exact birthday but gives it as May 22nd 1962. Despite his
rocky start, he flourished at his school in Stuttgart. He was even moved
up two years early before graduating and going to learn how to paint cars.

Around this time he took up Thai boxing, discovered he had talent and
went on to win the European championships twice. The sport remains a big
part of his life today.

If the married father-of-three does need a break, he takes a day off to
spend in his training room. “I couldn't relax on holiday,” he told the taz.

Several years after starting work at Porsche he became involved in its
union and in 2003 he became head of the committee for factory staff.

A member of the centre-left Social Democrat Party (SPD), he is a vocal
advocate of workers' rights. “When I have the feeling that something is
unfair, I can go from a rose to force of nature in a few seconds,” he said.

Hück is a big supporter of disadvantaged children, having experienced
childhood hardship. “A child cannot do anything about their parents
dying, being ill or poor,” he said.

The 51-year-old, who has two adopted children, has made no secret of his
desire to get into politics, with his dream post being education minister.
