Re: [MBZ] 300td 1982 brakes?
I have vacuum boost perfectly with the first stop on the brakes, but a second pedal push seems to indicate a loss of boost. Probably the vacuum pump. Unlikely to be any of the auxiliary vacuum accessories. It's not just the (negative) pressure, it's also got a rated delivery specification. [MBZ] small victories
Looking back through my records, it appears that the White Whale head-change saga has been going on for about three years. During most of those three years, the car ('87 300 TD) sat in my garage, and mold began to bloom inside. When I finished the head install a couple weeks ago, I only gave a cursory cleaning of the interior hard surfaces with Windex glass cleaner (seats, steering/dash, center console). The mold smell was awful. My wife approached the outside of the car once and started to insert the key to unlock the door, but the mold smell drove her back. I had considered several options for cleaning or "re-mediating" the mold, primary among those was ozone gas treatment. To that end, I purchased an ozone generator from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007GS3T8O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Earlier this week we had low humidity (for Charleston) of 40 to 50%, so I decided it was time to dose the White Whale. I ran the generator and a fan for two hours, and during the last five minutes of that I started the engine and ran the AC on recirculation to get circulate ozone throughout the duct-work. After that treatment, the mold smell was greatly reduced but still somewhat present. I had to air the car out and run an errand. When I returned from the errand, the humidity was still low, so I closed up the car and performed another treatment, this time running the generator for about three hours, and then leaving the car sealed up overnight. The next day I thoroughly aired out and vacuumed the car, and then submitted the car to the ultimate test: a day of running errands with SWMBO. My wife is extremely sensitive to mold, so if she was satisfied, then I knew I had succeeded. We first left all the windows down and AC off and drove around the neighborhood. Nose OK? Check! My Garmin GPS receiver has an indication of the current speed limit, so that could control the vehicle's speed. There are, however, many areas for which there is no speed limit is shown or for which the speed limit has changed and the GPS receiver's indication is now wrong. In any event, I suspect the driver would be liable for a speeding ticket, particularly if he were driving manually, which, I presume, would completely override the automatic control and allow him to go whatever speed he desired. Re: [MBZ] 300td 1982 brakes?
Check the vacuum at the pump on the front of the engine. There are two check valves in there that can go bad. The other usual cause is a cracked hard line or a crack in the plastic section in the middle where the other vacuum lines hook up. Repair is to replace the line. You can use epoxy as a temporary fix for the plastic fitting, but it's brittle and will only break somewhere else soon. Re: [MBZ] 300td 1982 brakes?
Check your vacuum reservoir. There should be a line that tees off of the brake booster line or thereabouts that goes over into your front driver's side fender. Inside the fender is a vacuum reservoir. In some models it's plastic, others a metal coffee can looking thing. Two things to check here: 1.) There is a rubber grommet where the vacuum line goes into the reservoir. This may be missing or most likely is dried out and cracked. It's very similar to the grommet on the windshield washer pump in the washer reservoir. The line just slides through it. 2.) On some models I believe there is a check valve in this line as well. That could be bad, allowing your reservoir to leak off. What happens if you get the second weak brake pump, but let it run for a minute and try again? Is the first pump good again, or just as bad as the second one, or worse? This is a good indication of the loss of your reservoir. It had a lot of water spots or just sort of ground in crud that a regular washing and window cleaner wouldn't remove. It's especially noticeable when it's wet or the wipers need to be used. Jay O'Brien had given me some stuff years ago called "Nuthin's Better", which was an abrasive powder that was really fine. You used a wet sponge and sprinkled it on, then scrubbed the glass, removing just about everything that was on it. I ran out a while back and was trying to think of a suitable substitute. I had Ajax and was looking for a can of Barkeeper's Friend, but while doing so I came across something better We have a glass cooktop on our range that we have some specialized cleaner for. I dug that out and gave it a spin. If you know what a painted finish feels like after you've used detailing clay on it, this is what the glass felt like. Very nice. I rubbed it in over maybe a quarter of the windshield at a time, then wiped it off with a paper towel and cleaned the glass with automotive glass cleaner. Nice. Now I just have to wait for some rain to see how my wipers perform. [MBZ] 300td 1982 brakes?
Folks i have a mercedes related problem. Thursday as i was driving to atlanta rush our traffic, my 1982 300td made a couple of hard shifts. Right after that i realized that i had no boost on the brakes when i needed to stop. Also, the engine would no longer shutoff with the vacuum system (with the key) I removed the large vacuum line into the brake booster and by thumb, i had almost no suction. I limped through my trip using 2 foot braking since i had no boost. Yesterday, i removed the big vacuum line and squirted a few tablespoons of press wash solved (petroleum solvent) and also a little bit of acetone/atf mix. Then i did a vacuum test and i seemed to have about 22 inches of Hg which i think is the spec? I inspected the lines and everything seemed ok. With it all hooked up, the car now stops with the key. I have vacuum boost perfectly with the first stop on the brakes, but a second pedal push seems to indicate a loss of boost. What is with that? Pads are all fresh within the last 10k miles and no loss of brake fluid, etc. The vacuum system is the forward stuff + key shutoff …. the central locks and climate control and i assume the vacuum tank (isn't it in the rear) are disconnected thanks xx rick Rick Hawkins ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. This stuff was amazingly easy to use, although the process is a little weird. That's why I called and talked to their people. Once they explained everything it made sense. Re: [MBZ] Source for Bumper Cover
I don't think they're doing that here, although if you use eBay for the shipping the rates are more than what you would pay if you shipped it yourself. I had some incunabula (very early book pages prior to the introduction of printing presses) that I put up for sale on eBay earlier this year. I didn't bother to check the eBay costs for international shipping - these would have gone in a legal sized reinforced envelope - and I got a nasty note from a guy in Argentina about how eBay was charging $40 for shipping, which was close to what the piece was worth. I could have sent it using US Postal service International Priority Mail for about $USD 18. I had no way of knowing how eBay calculated out international shipping prices, but needless to say they were ripping people off in my opinion.
