So, how high does your airspace extend? When I'm flying over your house on
my way somewhere else, when am I entering your airspace? I don't have armor
under my seat . . .
The FAA says I have to stay 500 feet above persons and property, and I do
that.

Re: [MBZ] OT - A COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS- HOG KILLING

2015-03-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Answer:

In the old days, before OSHA and EPA, men did things knowing that if they
violated the laws of nature or physics, they would be injured or die.
Consequently, they took responsibility for their own actions and the
actions of others and helped each other.

Amazingly, it worked well. the economy survived, people provided for their
families and the government ran on a balanced budget. Stunning, isn't it.

Ohh.. and they used broom handles to push the carcass under the scalding
water and tied ropes to the legs to keep their hands out of the hot water.

Scalding and scraping hogs on butchering day was one way it was done..

In my family, and neighborhood, the hogs were all skinned using a special V
trough on legs that was made of 2 x 12 lumber to hold the carcass at a good
working height. The skin was then sold for additional profit, while the
meat was processed for curing in a smoke house using a special family
secret mixture of herbs and spices and salt as a rub, then wrapping the
sections of meat, or ham, in clean cloth to hold in the spices while it was
slow smoked for days, which preserved it for later use.

I can remember adult discussions with neighbors who did the scald and
scrape vs those of us who did the skin and smoke method.. Basic thought
seemed to be it was cleaner to skin, and much faster. Also, without the
skin the meat took up the smoke and spices for curing more completely.. By
the time I left the farm to join the military, most in the county were
using the skinning method..

I like that line of thought. Lets get started...

It is my considered opinion that such acts by persons who hold offices of
trust and take an oath to uphold the Constitution, are in direct violation
of the Rights preserved by Constitution, thus, violation of those Rights in
such a willful and long standing manner constitutes an enforceable act of
Treason which has harmed the Citizens of USA and the State.

Treason is a Federal Crime, still punishable by hanging, which should be
done forthwith after conviction by a jury of 12.

Said hanging should be done in public as an example to all others who might
forget the trust given to them in execution of their duties in office.
The law should be strictly followed in finding these parties guilty. I do
not suggest or imply lynch mob tactics, but the simple application of the
law to the full intent.

But then... I've had enough of this kind of abuse of power by elected or
appointed officials.. my position may not be shared by all others.. I
respect that.

Today's hog butchering trivia:

Kohler started out making hog scalding troughs as well as other cast iron
farm implements. Word got back to the factory that people were also using
them to bathe in as well.

So they took a couple off the production line and enameled them - later to
become the first real "bathtubs" of modern days.

My first classic Mercedes Benz with alloy wheels was a very early (9/69)
W111 280SE 3.5 coupe The alloys were listed on the build sheet (data card)
so they were original to the car.

Re: [MBZ] OT - A COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS- HOG KILLING

2015-03-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Today's hog butchering trivia:

Kohler started out making hog scalding troughs as well as other cast iron farm
implements. Word got back to the factory that people were also using them to
bathe in as well.

So they took a couple off the production line and enameled them - later to
become the first real "bathtubs" of modern days.

May I not be forced to live in a cardboard box, but I am now half owner of a
1975 300D.  SWMBA is out of state, so will not find out of this new toy for a
few months

I think this is another of the K'leb tauntings that I ended up getting.  Like
Gump, somebody on list made mention that I should look at this thing.  I put
that thought on ignore until last month.  IIRC, the car listed for around $1k.
Over time the value decreased and when I looked three weeks ago, CL had it at
$650.  PO listed it as no start but had been driven all summer until no start
condition arose.  I went to see what I found, and had arranged with #1 boy that
if it were decent, we would go in on it together.  Something to get him out of
the basement and learning how to shade tree his own rides later on.

I went to see it on a cloudy/misty day and learned the PO had a penchant for
older cars.  He is driving a '92 w190, but had an old SD at one point, and got
this car (300D) on a lark, thinking he would restore it somehow.  Owner before
him has sort of boogered the car up by installing seats out of an SE (w126) and
they did not want to stay bolted down.  Windows had stopped working and were
half down, so in our climate mold had set up shop.  The driver side doors had
also developed a latching issue and would not remain shut.  There was obvious
external rust on the rear quarter panel, but the fronts seemed solid.  Somebody
had tried to renovate the car a number of years ago with generic carpet and
padding on the floor, put bundts all around, installed the wrong battery, had
aftermarket speakers front and back, messed up alligator texture original
silver paint.

The no start was due to "shakes went starts" that had worn the cable to the
starter until it snapped.  No electrons to the starter.  I saw that and while
hooked to my W220 battery (jump attempt) had him glow the thing and try a start
while I held the cable to the place on the starter it wanted to be.  I used
heavy rubber gloves, but would not have complained if I was taken out by my own
stupidity.  The thing did attempt to turn over.  So, that indicated that the
engine was not seized and that the starter wanted to work.  Seemed like it
might work for a messing around car.

I returned home and shared my data with #1 boy.  He was noncommittal, which is
fine.  I made interested noises to the seller, but told him I had a few other
things to consider, so he should feel free to offer it to somebody with cash.
His price was not in line with the value, and I was not going to waste cash or
time getting the car in much better shape.  From what I had seen, this would be
a great 24 Hours of LeMons car.  Strip it down and salvage what I could to fund
the project.

Seller contacted me last week and said all the other tire kickers were far from
interested.  If I wanted, he would sell for $400 or just take the $300 for
scrap value, since he really needed it gone.  This time #1 boy was a bit more
interested, and we made plans to drag the thing home.  I had hoped to put some
fresh fuel in, and connect the starter cable, or build myself one.  As back up,
I made up a 0 gauge cable and faked up a bumper guard for the pusher in case I
could get it bump started.  And off he went in the pouring rain.

We arrived in good time and rousted the seller.  Poked around the car trying to
get wires secured and the doors strapped shut.  Hooked the jumper cables to the
battery and let some juice flow so that I could give it a start.  A quarter
hour later, there were no electrons being saved in the battery and there was
not enough juice to get the starter to engage, but there was enough for glow.
I should mention that the ignition was hacked, and you needed to push on a
mystery button under the steering column, sort of like the gorilla knob on Gump
to get the plugs glowing.  That is as good as any car alarm for me.  We closed
the deal and I had #1 boy give the car a push for an attempt at bump start.  At
least we got out of the sellers neighborhood before I figured out there was not
enough electron flow for the ignition to kick in and light off the engine.  We
made it to a commercial center and I called AAA for a ride home.

I sat in the lot waiting for the truck for about an hour and a half.  Rain
pouring down, windows open, driver seat unbolted and reclined back on the rear
bench seat, and the mobile phone battery crapping out.  The section of town is
not a prosperous one.  A very "multicultural" area where the cop cars are of
the SUV/armored looking sort, not the dainty Crown Vic.  Many sirens and pairs
of patrol cars responding to all manner of nefarious activities.  I am waiting
for a "brother" or "vato" to walk up and knife me while I soak.

Yep, another one already:

HOG KILLING
By Wilton Strickland

On a very cold day in late autumn, Mama and Daddy would kill hogs
and prepare the meat for storage. On the day before, Daddy would
ready a scalding vat, a metal tank with sides low enough for several
men to lift a heavy hog over into it and big enough to submerge the
hog in scalding water. The vat was situated on the ground over a
shallow, trench-like hole where a wood fire would heat the water to
boiling. A vertical, metal stovepipe about 5 to 6 feet long protruded
from one end of the fire trench to vent the fire.
Very early on the appointed day, Daddy would start a fire under the
vat and have the water boiling by the time several neighbor couples
arrived to help with the day's tasks. Daddy and my older brothers or
a couple of neighbor men would go into the hog pen and slaughter the
selected hogs, usually two to six. This was often done by hitting the
hog on the head with the back of an ax or appropriate hammer or by
shooting him in the head with a .22 caliber rifle. Immediately, one
of the men would slit the hog's throat with a very sharp knife. After
the hogs had bled sufficiently, they were carried across the yard and
rolled one-by-one into the vat of boiling water.
The boiling water loosened the hog's hair so that it could be
scraped off easily. After the hog had been submerged in the water,
the men rolled it out of the vat onto boards or a low platform beside
the vat. There, the men removed all the hair by scraping it with
hand-held scrapers, often using the sharp edges of galvanized steel
Mason jar lids. After the men removed the hair, they hung the hog by
its rear legs on a "gallows" or "scaffolding" - a strong pole or beam
mounted horizontally between temporary uprights.
One of the men then would cut a vertical slit down the entire
centerline of the hog's underside and carefully remove all of its
internal organs. During this process, the "butcher" was careful not to
puncture an intestine. He also put the intestines in a container
separate from the other organs to prevent contamination with feces.
After all of the internal organs were removed and the entire carcass
thoroughly washed, the men laid it on a clean table, where it was cut
into appropriate parts - hams, shoulders, ribs, loin (pork chops),
sides (country bacon), fatback, etc.
The women would take the intestines to a newly-dug hole at the rear
of the yard and wash their contents into the hole. After the
intestines had been thoroughly washed several times, including turning
them inside out, the women took them inside to a table where they
scraped their inside surfaces, leaving paper-thin casings for sausage.
Meanwhile, the men trimmed excess fat from the parts to be salted
and covered in appropriate herbs and spices and hung in the
smokehouse. Most meaty parts not going into the smokehouse were
ground into sausage. Certain fatty parts were combined and heated
(rendered) in the cast iron wash pot in the back yard to make lard,
which was stored in metal lard cans and kept available for cooking
during the following year. A byproduct of the rendering process was
"cracklins," small pieces of fat and skin left after the lard was
squeezed from them. A delicacy was "cracklin" bread, cornbread
containing cracklins.
As a child, I often turned the handle of the grinder to prepare the
meat for making sausage. After the meat was ground, the women mixed
certain herbs and spices into it to make sausage. We then put the
sausage through a hand-cranked sausage press, which forced it into
casings made from the hog's intestines.
The sausages, hams, shoulders and certain sidepieces were hung in the
smokehouse to dry and to "cure." For the next several days, Daddy
would put a smoldering bucket of hardwood coals in the smokehouse to
help cure (preserve) the meat and give it a smoked flavor. The main
preserver, though, was the generous amount of salt, herbs and spices
encasing the meat.
For several days after hog killing day, we would enjoy nearly a
feast of fresh meats, including tender loin and sausage. Another
"special" delicacy for many was "chitlins," (chitterlings) hog
intestines appropriately cooked and seasoned. A delicacy that we
children liked best, though, was a special sausage we called
"Dandoodie." (I suspect the name may have evolved from the Cajun
"Boudin" sausage.) In addition to the ingredients of regular sausage,
it also contained liver and other internal organs, making it very dark
in color and giving it a somewhat sweet taste. For several m

Failed auxillary pump that only leaks when running -- look for coolant

Failed head gasket leaking out the side.  Failed head gasket leaking

Cracked head, same symptoms as the head gasket.
Pressure test the system, that should at least eliminate some of the

[MBZ] OT - A COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS- HOG KILLING

2015-03-16 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

Yep, another one already:

HOG KILLING
By Wilton Strickland

On a very cold day in late autumn, Mama and Daddy would kill hogs and
prepare the meat for storage. On the day before, Daddy would ready a
scalding vat, a metal tank with sides low enough for several men to lift a
heavy hog over into it and big enough to submerge the hog in scalding water.
The vat was situated on the ground over a shallow, trench-like hole where a
wood fire would heat the water to boiling. A vertical, metal stovepipe
about 5 to 6 feet long protruded from one end of the fire trench to vent the
fire.
Very early on the appointed day, Daddy would start a fire under the vat
and have the water boiling by the time several neighbor couples arrived to
help with the day's tasks. Daddy and my older brothers or a couple of
neighbor men would go into the hog pen and slaughter the selected hogs,
usually two to six. This was often done by hitting the hog on the head with
the back of an ax or appropriate hammer or by shooting him in the head with
a .22 caliber rifle. Immediately, one of the men would slit the hog's
throat with a very sharp knife. After the hogs had bled sufficiently, they
were carried across the yard and rolled one-by-one into the vat of boiling
water.
The boiling water loosened the hog's hair so that it could be scraped
off easily. After the hog had been submerged in the water, the men rolled
it out of the vat onto boards or a low platform beside the vat. There, the
men removed all the hair by scraping it with hand-held scrapers, often using
the sharp edges of galvanized steel Mason jar lids. After the men removed
the hair, they hung the hog by its rear legs on a "gallows" or
"scaffolding" - a strong pole or beam mounted horizontally between temporary
uprights.
One of the men then would cut a vertical slit down the entire centerline
of the hog's underside and carefully remove all of its internal organs.
During this process, the "butcher" was careful not to puncture an intestine.
He also put the intestines in a container separate from the other organs to
prevent contamination with feces. After all of the internal organs were
removed and the entire carcass thoroughly washed, the men laid it on a clean
table, where it was cut into appropriate parts - hams, shoulders, ribs, loin
(pork chops), sides (country bacon), fatback, etc.
The women would take the intestines to a newly-dug hole at the rear of
the yard and wash their contents into the hole. After the intestines had
been thoroughly washed several times, including turning them inside out, the
women took them inside to a table where they scraped their inside surfaces,
leaving paper-thin casings for sausage.
Meanwhile, the men trimmed excess fat from the parts to be salted and
covered in appropriate herbs and spices and hung in the smokehouse. Most
meaty parts not going into the smokehouse were ground into sausage.
Certain fatty parts were combined and heated (rendered) in the cast iron
wash pot in the back yard to make lard, which was stored in metal lard cans
and kept available for cooking during the following year. A byproduct of
the rendering process was "cracklins," small pieces of fat and skin left
after the lard was squeezed from them. A delicacy was "cracklin" bread,
cornbread containing cracklins.
As a child, I often turned the handle of the grinder to prepare the meat
for making sausage. After the meat was ground, the women mixed certain
herbs and spices into it to make sausage. We then put the sausage through a
hand-cranked sausage press, which forced it into casings made from the hog's
intestines.
The sausages, hams, shoulders and certain sidepieces were hung in the
smokehouse to dry and to "cure." For the next several days, Daddy would put
a smoldering bucket of hardwood coals in the smokehouse to help cure
(preserve) the meat and give it a smoked flavor. The main preserver,
though, was the generous amount of salt, herbs and spices encasing the meat.
For several days after hog killing day, we would enjoy nearly a feast of
fresh meats, including tender loin and sausage. Another "special" delicacy
for many was "chitlins," (chitterlings) hog intestines appropriately cooked
and seasoned. A delicacy that we children liked best, though, was a special
sausage we called "Dandoodie." (I suspect the name may have evolved from the
Cajun "Boudin" sausage.) In addition to the ingredients of regular sausage,
it also contained liver and other internal organs, making it very dark in
color and giving it a somewhat sweet taste. For several mornings at
breakfast we also enjoyed hog brains and eggs scrambled together. For
nearly the following year, we would continue to enjoy the country ham,
sausage and bacon stored in the smokehouse, all especially good when served
with Mama's usual fresh, hot buttermilk biscuits.
Another very special product produced from the hogs was soap

traces below the pump or coolant in the rubber holder.

Failed head gasket leaking out the side. Failed head gasket leaking
into the coolant passages, blowing coolant out the overlfow (check for
pressurized hoses when cold).

Cracked head, same symptoms as the head gasket.

Pressure test the system, that should at least eliminate some of the
common possibilities.

Re: [MBZ] SEL 'stank'

2015-03-16 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
For KE-Jet that suddenly won't start hot, check the coolant temp
sensor (two wire one) and verify that the solder is not cracked in the
plug.

This disabled the TE intemittently for some time until I figured it
out. Acts like it's flooded, as it is since with the infinite
resistance due to an open circuit it is adding fuel for a -100F start!

Just pulling the plug and putting it back on can help as it will
restore the connection.

2015-03-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You of course have the right to operated the drone but if it begins to infringe
on my rights I have an equal right to react. Since I'm a nice person I'd start
by asking you to stop, if you failed to stop you'd stop having a drone.
Same thing as when you tailgate me. You have the right to tailgate but I have
the right to drive really slow...

I am thinking there is a hairline crack in the filler tank neck but not
clear if that would allow so much coolant to escape

Having it checked for the presence of coolant or exhaust would be an easy
way to get some piece of mind.

Before our '82 240D was converted to a 240D/3.0, it had problems with
coolant level dropping. It turned out to be a pinhole in the side of the
radiator that leaked slowly when it was hot. Leaking only when hot, so
the leakage evaporated, and being on the side, where one could not see
it, both contributed to the difficulty of finding the problem. It finally
went away when I changed the radiator to a 300D radiator.

Yes.

Government does not ask permission before flying drones to spy on you, it
is only equally fair we citizens would do the same.

Who would you rather be stalked by, an ex girlfriend or a government agency
with unlimited power and an armed drone?

A quick read of the 10th Amendment of the Bill of Rights is suggested.

As you all know, my 1983 300TD had a heating issue couipled with low
coolant levels.  When I replenished the coolant the heating system resumed
mnormal operations.

This weekend, I checked the aux. filler tank and it was shockingly low
again.  There is no puddle under the car, so the loss of coolant is
associated with vehicle operation.  WTF?!  There is a slight wetness at the
tank filler neck, and the exhaust appears normal (although I am not one to
look for trouble).

I swapped out the radiator cap for a new one I had lying around.  If that
doesn't work I have a new tank I could install as well.  Ideas on how to

[MBZ] Incredibly disappearing coolant in my W123 300TD

2015-03-16 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes

Ideas on how to
trouble shoot this nagging issue if the problem persists?

Re: [MBZ] SEL 'stank'

2015-03-16 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

What is an EHA valve, and what is it supposed to do?

It's expensive. :-) $270 for mine. But it fixed the gas
leak, and between it and adjusting the air plate the car
is running better.

Except when it isn't. Yesterday it wouldn't start to take
us back home from the restaurant. Somebody stopped to help,
we poked at the engine for awhile. He had a screwdriver, and
so we could see we had spark. Fuel pump was running, could
hear it. Air metering flap was definitely springy, so there
was fuel pressure. Once in awhile the car would cough, but
that was it.

Eventually it started and ran for a couple of seconds, then
died out. It kept that up for awhile, then finally ran and
took us home.

This intermittent crap is very annoying.

Sounds like someone complained to the FAA. The commercial angle might just be
an excuse to try and stop him without mentioning the real reasons which could
relate to security of various sorts. A large drone can carry enough explosives
to do serious damage according to one article.
Seems to be lots of government concern about drones in general with several
states enacting laws regulating them.
The government is running tests around the White House and DC trying to find
ways to disrupt their communication and Florida is doing the following:

http://www.bing.com/search?q=drone+laws+florida&qs=AS&sk=AS4&pq=drone+laws&sc=8-10&sp=5&cvid=c5c3a53824b74e74aa438983b6c5a6cf&FORM=QBLH&ghc=1

or search: "drone laws florida"

If he really wanted to test his "drone rights" he could take his drone up north
of Tampa a few miles and take pictures around the large nudist camp, or down to
Boca Grande and take pictures of the Rockefellers and other rich folks around
their enclaves.
Gerry
P.S. The info on his drone that I passed on to friend in Tallahassee was much
appreciated. He is now flying a drone around the area and he sends you his
thanks.

Re: [MBZ] OT - My Drone Buddy Gets into Trouble

2015-03-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I can only assume that someone ratted the guy out. I'll say that from my
distant observations (I don't work directly with him, but I know people who do)
that the guy has a reputation for being a dick. This, no doubt, was probably
the motivation for someone ratting on him.

That being said, it's probably prudent just to stand down and leave it at that
rather than poking the bear. While I have no doubt there are plenty of ACLU
and other lawyers who would take this on, pissing off the government is never a
good idea in my book. They tend to make your life miserable for a long, long
time, regardless of the outcome.

I think he said something in one of the many local TV interviews to the effect
that he wasn't doing anything wrong, and would continue to run his drone and
post videos until they came after him.

That's not smart if you ask me, but knowing what I do about him, I'm not
surprised.
