That could be fun! Looks like he's got at least one other Benz in the background of one of the photos. Price is actually not too bad, too bad it has transmission problems. [MBZ] grounding heads up
No idea if this applies to MB but it likely could not hurt. My mechanic son Tom, spent the weekend swapping a transmission for a friend in a 2000 Nissan Maxma. The existing transmission still moved the car but would not go into the higher gears. They had a couple of options. Have the original rebuilt or find a used one to throw into it. They chose the latter and found a used one from a junk yard for a fraction of the price of the rebuild. Tom had his fingers crossed that the transmission would work once it was installed. The yard that they got it from swore it worked fine before it was removed from the previous car but it had also been on their shelf for a long while. He pulled the old transmission on Saturday and had the replacement in and most of the car back together by Saturday at supper time. Sunday, he went back out in the morning to finish it off. Then he got a surprise. The vehicle would crank but not start. He checked a bunch of things but had no success in starting it. No codes came up. He then went online and read some forums that discussed this. The gist of what he found there is that one must sand the mating surfaces of the engine and the transmission to clean the metal and ensure a good ground between the two. He could not easily do this after it was all installed without pulling the transmission again so the did the next best thing and installed a couple of ground wires from the transmission bolts back to the battery ground. That seemed to do the trick as the engine then fired up. He drove it a bit and the transmssion started out a bit questionable, flaring etc, but seemed to get better after he drove it some, so he has given the vehicle back to the owners with instructions to drive it but to try not to abuse it for a bit and see if it improves with time and use. They did put Mobil1 transmission fluid in it. He says he did read the instructions on Mitchell before he started the job and looked at all of the tips they offer but they said nothing about this issue of grounding. He says he will never install another transmission without cleaning the mating surfaces to ensure he does not run into this issue again. He has also suggested to the vehicle owner that it is a good time to sell the Maxima. [MBZ] OT BBQ
We have a Vermont Castings BBQ that we have had for a long while and like despite the fact that it is showing its age. We needed to do some repair on it so a week or so ago, I ordered some parts online. Vermont Castings has changed hands according to their website and they no longer wish to deal with the public. One is supposed to find the local dealer and deal through them. They do have a limited online outlet for some parts but I have checked it a few times and the ones I need are always out of stock. I ordered parts that were aftermarket replacements in order to keep the thing going. Burner tubes and heat plates. The heat plates are fine but different as the originals were ceramic coated steel and the new ones are stainless steel. Apart from that the fit is ok so they will work. We shall see how long they last. The burner tubes are a different story. At first glance they appear to be pretty much identical. However, I could not get them to fit. I would have had to either modify the BBQ housing or the new burner tubes in order to make them work. As luck would have it, I discovered I did not really need them so I will just return the new tubes. The shutter valve that lets air in has screen and the screen had become plugged up with what looks to be fluff from dandelions etc. I used a little wire brush to clean them up and reinstalled the original tubes and they seem to work fine. I had been concerned that the holes in the tubes had become enlarged over time but it does not appear that that is an issue. The holes in the new tubes appeared to be similar size. The burners are now showing decent blue flame so my issue with the quality of the flame before was likely just an issue of the air intakes being plugged up. I need to refill some propane tanks before we can give it a good test and cook something but for now I think I am ok. Frustrating when parts do not fit the way they should. Not sure exactly what the issue is but the tube just would not fit in such a way that the brass feed from the control valve would fit in the end of the tube. The original just slips in like it should. The new ones would have required some modification so if I had to do it I could but I was reluctant to really get into it. I did not want to damage the new tubes so that they could not be returned if they never did work properly. Re: [MBZ] OT BBQ
I also have an old Vermont castings grill. I got it from a co-worker who didn't want to rebuild it again. The venturi tubes (which I think is the same as what you call burner tubes) had rotted out. Sadly the screws which held the tubes to the burner broke in the brass burner and I had no luck getting them out. I ended up getting a new cast iron burner and tubes and we've been using it since I think 2009 or 2010. I got the parts from an online supplier. My local Vermont Castings place had no desire to look up parts for me and was notably un-helpful. I need to pull it apart this year and clean since the flame is getting noticeably yellow. Other than that I really see no reason that I'd ever need to replace it. It looks and operates exactly the same today as it did the day I fixed it. If it does someday fail I'll be looking for another used top quality grill to rebuild. We had a cheap Outback brand before this grill and it was garbage. At camp we've got a $100 Kmart cheapie which is fine since a more expensive grill would probably get stolen but my grill is a million times better. My dad gets a new cheap grill every 3-5 years. I feel like I'm way ahead of him with mine... -Curt From: Randy Bennell via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, March 23, 2015 11:52 AM Subject: [MBZ] OT BBQ We have a Vermont Castings BBQ that we have had for a long while and like despite the fact that it is showing its age. Re: [MBZ] OT faucets
I have had excellent service from a Kohler faucets with ceramic valves. One is the kitchen faucet that gets constant use, even with our somewhat acid well water. On the other hand I have to rebuild the pricey Delta lavatory faucets every year or two. The guts of those fancy oiled-bronze things are the same as the cheapest Peerless faucets. So I buy seats and springs in bulk (boxes of 50). The secret to getting any longevity from those Delta seats is to use silicone grease, NOT plumber's grease. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: https://server.secureplusplusfour.net:2083/cpsess595060604/3rdparty/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] OT faucets
It seems like it is becoming next to impossible to find decent plumbing stuff. We have a Delta faucet on our kitchen sink that is not terribly old but is making my good wife unhappy because it is corroding at bit and losing some of the chrome plating. It also leaks around the swivel when it is used for just cold water. That might be fixed with new O rings but the damage to the finish is such that she does not like the look of it. We decided a while ago to get a new faucet. We bought a Kohler unit as they seem to be good quality - or at least they once were. Saturday morning I decided to install the thing. Unfortunately no one wants to do real plumbing anymore so these things all come with flex hoses etc. I prefer the old style where one hooks them up with copper. (although I did our bath remodel on the 2nd floor with mostly PEX). I am getting a bit old, stiff, and too heavy for the work inside kitchen cabinets on the floor but I did manage to change the plumbing lines so that the flex hoses would connect to the existing copper. However, this was one of those faucets with the pull out spray unit in the main spout. The flex hose goes down into the cupboard in a big loop and back up to the bottom of the faucet unit and has a weight on the loop to pull the flex hose back into the spout. Unfortunately, the loop fell right into the area where my existing copper plumbing is with gate valves for shutoff etc. The weight banged on the pipes and got stuck sometimes when the spray unit was pulled out. Not a good thing. We looked it over and I told my wife that I could make it work but it was going to take longer as I was going to have to re-plumb the whole works under the sink and move the feed lines out from the middle to the outer edges of the cabinet in order to leave the middle clear for the spray hose. She looked at the installed faucet and decided she really did not care for it and preferred just to remove it and get something different. This was about 4 PM on Saturday afternoon. We hopped in the car and ran to a couple of stores to see if we could quickly find a different faucet to swap in while the plumbing was apart. No luck at all. So much of the stuff offered appears to be junk intended to last only a short while. The taps weigh next to nothing and have a cheap appearance. HD had one unit on display that might have been OK but then had none in stock. The 2nd store we went to had nothing we would bring home. We were going to dinner with friends Saturday evening so I had to leave it as it was at that point but after we returned home later in the evening, I pulled the new faucet back out and put it back in the box. No harm done to it that I can see. It never even had water run through it. Sunday morning, I re-installed the old faucet and we were back up and running by lunch time but we are still on the lookout for a decent replacement faucet set. I needed to get it working as I had to shutoff the lines that feed the washer in the basement as they are on the same lines that feed the kitchen. I pulled the hoses from the washer and drained the piping to the kitchen via the valves for the washer so that I could solder in the cupboard in the kitchen. My wife wanted to use the washer so I needed to get the kitchen put back together. I was also going to get only a sandwich for Sunday dinner if I did not get the kitchen functional again. My wife was looking online to see what she could find and noted that Delta seems to have almost disappeared. She saw a Grohe that looked like it might be ok but we would likely have to order it online and hope it looked good up close. Re: [MBZ] OT faucets
I think Grohe is the best. There is a HansGrohe brand too, I am not quite sure if they are the same or some difference or what. I have bought Grohe stuff in the past, and have new bath sink faucets and shower thingies which are very solid, all cast brass, very well machined, ceramic valves, work smoothly. German, but might be of the chinee side of the family. In any case, order from build.com if you can there. I have bought almost all my new kitchen and bathroom stuff from them and they have been awesome. I have that same problem with the pull-out faucet sprayers, if I get annoyed enough I will put a box around the hoses and weights. --R On 3/23/15 12:14 PM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: It seems like it is becoming next to impossible to find decent plumbing stuff. Re: [MBZ] OT BBQ
I think mine must be a newer but not better model. It has 3 stainless steel tubes that run front to back. The venturi is built into the front end of the tube. They each attach to the front wall of the burner box with a small stainless bolt threaded into an insert attached to the wall and protrude through. The brass feeds from the valves just protrude into the hole in the end of each tube. No cast iron in sight and no physical attachment. The inserts were seized and I twisted them out of the metal getting the burner tubes loose. I had to use a steel strap as a repair patch but such is life. The BBQ box is deteriorating somewhat. Should be good for another few years. RB On 23/03/2015 11:02 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: I also have an old Vermont castings grill.
Yes, the box is steel. There is a big oval hole in the bottom with a pan that slips into grooves from the back that is aluminum. I guess its job is to catch drippings etc. It is tapered to one end and at the low end there is another smaller metal tray that hangs under a hole in the bigger one to catch the drips. The box was enameled steel for the most part but has started to wear away in spots. The grills are ceramic coated cast iron. The lid is heavy ceramic coated and blue. The end pieces of it may be cast iron as they are solid - also coated but shiny and black - and the lid is very heavy. No cast aluminum anywhere. All the faucets in our house are mixers and I don't like any of them. The ones I especially don't like are in the bathroom because they're the kind you have to pull out. The one in the bathroom sink is the worst, pull not hard enough and nothing happens, pull too hard and water BLASTS out and your crotch gets drenched. Re: [MBZ] OT faucets
Don't buy plumbing stuff at the box stores, it's invariably the worst possible grade available. Go to a standard pluming supply company, the one your local plumbers use. Slightly higher prices, but vastly better stuff. I need to do this myself, I grabbed a Delta from the box store last year because the old one was leaking into the basement and it's a pain to get to the plumber's supply from work (they close at 5). I'm sorry I did, it's flimsy and the temperature control is pretty much full hot or full cold, the range where there is mixing is about 10% of the travel of the tap. I had actually thought of that too. Re: [MBZ] grounding heads up
What a nightmare. This is why I thank my lucky stars I discovered Mercedes 33 years ago and have owned no other marque else since. On Mon, Mar 23, 2015 at 11:41 AM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: No idea if this applies to MB but it likely could not hurt. Plumbing is a billion dollar industry, yet the water valves in my great grandmothers home that are 140 years old are of better quality than what I can buy today, and are still working. For example. Is this a good as we can do? The reverse is true. We are going backward. Electronics are throw away as there is a newer, better, cheaper one waiting to be sold to you. The people that make hardware and tools and appliances want in on this so they make the stuff fail and refuse to make parts readily available so we have little choice but to buy the next version of the junk they peddle. The faucets on the sink at home when I was a kid lasted until the sink wore out. They likely could have been re-used but we put new ones in with the new sink. I have since changed those new ones out for a new set and that one is causing trouble. The first were good for better than 30 years and the chrome was good when we tossed them. The two sets since have not lasted 10 years each and they are only used from May through October as the place is closed down for the winter. Re: [MBZ] OT faucets
I just ripped out my old kitchen, a coupla years ago I had to replace the leaky single-handle faucet so bought probably the same thing from Lowes, was like $40 too. POS but it lasted for a year or so until the handle started flopping around, tightening the screw lasted about 3 days and it was back again flopping, and then it started leaking on the valve. So it is sitting on the porch in the double SS sink, the Habitat guys are coming Th to drag off the old fridge, I'll see if they want it, or I might save it and put it down under the deck for an outdoor cleanup sink or something. I guess I got my dinero worth, it was only meant to be a temp fix, but it still sorta pisses me off that something so simple, that has been around pretty much for 50 years, can't last more than a year or two. I'm sorry I did, it's flimsy and the temperature control is pretty much full hot or full cold, the range where there is mixing is about 10% of the travel of the tap. [MBZ] OT Q for the network guys
I am getting annoyed with email attachments being stripped off email from certain senders, with no apparent pattern. Today I received an email sent with an important attachment, but when I received it, there was no attachment. The first instance I noticed was close to a year ago, the local community college was sending emails with attachments, but the attachments were stripped most of the time. In between there have been other instances. Today's email originated in St. Joe, MO. the CC is only a couple miles away, although the message probably went to the head shed and them here, making the distance around 60 miles. Is anyone else noticing attachments being stripped? Does anyone know if the stripping is being done at ISPs? the backbone carriers? or elsewhere? Is there anything I can do to prevent the attachments being stripped? Thanks! ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: https://server.secureplusplusfour.net:2083/cpsess595060604/3rdparty/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Bob, Since it's in town and I'm in Phoenix.. I think I will give it a look tomorrow. Seems like a pretty virgin car for a pretty price. Of course, I'll try to improve on that number if it can be done... I like that it's a 3 peddle car.
