The description says that the power to the cooker is switched off and on by the 
device. I would have to take Crockpot apart and wire a control board bypass via 
a DPDT switch so pot could be used with or without the temp controller because 
the pot would not come back on without pushing a button when it was turned off 
by the device. 

This precise temperature control seems to "pasteurize" foods while keeping meat 
rare if desired, and prevents vegetables from being overcooked. 

I'll take the pot apart and see if there is room for a switch.

A KitchenAid with a dough hook does the kneading for you - makes it easy to
make bread. Get one with the raising/lowering bowl, not the tip-back type.


Don, your oven is perfect for pao doce!  The upper crust should dark 
brown.  depending on size/shape of loaf, oven should be 300 to 325 
for large loaves,  ~350 for medium  and  375 for rolls.


It makes a wicked good bun for hamburgers, and with the right hot 
dog, a heavenly hot dog with a pao doce bun.  If you don't use 
butter, use butter flavor crisco.

Yes but now my iMac seems to have a failing hdd or hdd fan so I might need to 
deal with that. I do have a timething backup so I am pulling files off that to 
my MacBook and will copy the backups to another hdd too just to make sure I 
have some redundant backups. 

I reinstalled the OS X and it is still funky so guess it's not the install. I'm 
currently running an extended test.

[MBZ] 2015 ChowdahQ Eight

The ChowdahQ was great fun, and we really enjoyed the time we spent with 
everyone.  It's always great to get to put names to faces, and for that matter, 
cars to names, too.

Special thanks to Dwight, Curt, Angie, Buster, and all the others who helped 
out to make an especially tasty event!

I have been advised by the Social Secretary that we must block out time to 
attend next year's Q as soon as the date is set, so Dwight, let me know when 
you make the reservation.

Just for general knowledge, if you use iTunes to back up your iOS device and 
enable encryption for the backup, not only is your device backed up, all of 
your passwords are saved as well.

Hmm, bubble method didn't work so well. The stream of bubbles never came to a 
complete stop, but there was a distinct reduction.  Initially that drop-off was 
at about 19° BTDC.  Ah hah!  The IP timing was too retarded, if the start of 
delivery is supposed to be 24° BTDC for an OM603, same as the OM617.

I checked with the locking tool method to validate, and found that to be over 
16° ATDC.  FSM says it should be 15° ATDC, +/- 1°.  

I didn't want to set the timing using the bubble method due to the lack of a 
clear cut-off in the bubble stream and the disparity versus the locking tool 
method, so I set the IP to ~21° BTDC (start of delivery) by bubble method, 
which was about 13.5° ATDC by locking tool.

Rebuilt all the delivery valves, Lubro Moly Diesel Purge treatment, put it all 
together and clean up, then test.

0-60 time improved from 13s to 12.25s, and less smoke.

Hmm, bubble method didn't work so well. The stream of bubbles never came 
to a complete stop, but there was a distinct reduction.  Initially that 
drop-off was at about 19° BTDC.  Ah hah!  The IP timing was too retarded, 
if the start of delivery is supposed to be 24° BTDC for an OM603, same as 
the OM617.


I checked with the locking tool method to validate, and found that to be 
over 16° ATDC.  FSM says it should be 15° ATDC, +/- 1°.


I didn't want to set the timing using the bubble method due to the lack of 
a clear cut-off in the bubble stream and the disparity versus the locking 
tool method, so I set the IP to ~21° BTDC (start of delivery) by bubble 
method, which was about 13.5° ATDC by locking tool.


Rebuilt all the delivery valves, Lubro Moly Diesel Purge treatment, put it 
all together and clean up, then test.


0-60 time improved from 13s to 12.25s, and less smoke.

including the one he "made."  I have the one depicted right next to it, sitting 
on my window sill, was given to us as a wedding gift 33 yr ago. Still clocking 
away. 

I wonder if I "made" that one and tried to get on an airplane with it how far I 
would get. 

This guy and his CAIR buddies and his weird dad trolled everyone, including the 
complicit media and of course our preezy.  But the school staff were obviously 
acting stupidly...

Yes, the Dorkfood is the one I have. My son has a different type that
includes a circulator and heater. The one I have only works with a really
cheap type of slow cooker that has very simple controls, that will turn back
on by itself without user input.

The description says that the power to the cooker is switched off and on by
the device. I would have to take Crockpot apart and wire a control board
bypass via a DPDT switch so pot could be used with or without the temp
controller because the pot would not come back on without pushing a button
when it was turned off by the device. 

This precise temperature control seems to "pasteurize" foods while keeping
meat rare if desired, and prevents vegetables from being overcooked. 

I'll take the pot apart and see if there is room for a switch.

It looks really solid, so thats a huge positive.  But it also looks
completely taken apart.  Its no small task to put these back together.

If everything in boxes is in good shape, new, or rebuilt, it could be a
gold mine.  The car deserves to be put back together, but selling the parts
could be very profitable.

I just ordered up an exhuast from timevalve for a 63 300SE coupe (for the
value price of just under $1000).  He told me he made a few 600 exhausts
this summer.  He charges around $6000 each for them.

Does it have the vacuum line unplugged or blocked 
with a BB at the EGR dashpot at the front of the 
exhaust manifold.   If not, unplug the vacuum 
line and plug the vacuum.


The egr hangs open and causes the symptoms you 
describe.  If it is stuck open, I am not sure 
what options you have other than to buy a new EGR 
valve for probably hundreds of $, or to remove 
and block the openings.


There was someone who sold a kit on this list 
maybe 10 years ago to remove and plug the EGR. 
That cleans up the engine bay considerably.  I 
think I bought 3 kits at the time.

Ok well I guess I will fess up, I was at this guys house to pick up a 140 
diesel and he has this 600 that is undergoing a complete restoration, it is 
getting ready to go down to Dallas to be dropped off to their body guy and he 
will pick up a 190SL that the guy finished down there. When he got the 600 the 
car was together but the motor was taken apart. It turned out there was a pump 
missing and the crank shaft. Not sure what pump was missing but he said they 
bought one for $7k. They found a crank shaft for $500 so they got lucky there. 
He said all the wood, chrome etc was salvageable. The hydraulic window lifts in 
that car are wild. He also had a 6.3 they are getting ready to start on.

EGR has been blocked off, vacuum line plugged, for years.

I think the IP is the issue, it is a "new" used IP, long story, I need to dial 
it in.

A KitchenAid with a dough hook does the kneading for you - makes it easy to
make bread. Get one with the raising/lowering bowl, not the tip-back type.

Probably.
But I have insufficient computer - it is 15+ years old and ran NT4
just fine but now linux can't keep up with the demands.  I'm lazy.  My
kids do all the messing with linux for me.  When Darren carrys thru
with his soon-to-be-replaced mac, I could be in sin city.  Darren??  I
want to meet you at BowTruss for mac, coffee, and espresso.

With chicken breasts, for example, you can cook them at 140 for 3 hours.
That time and temperature will pasteurize them so that they can be quickly
iced, refrigerated for several weeks, and then used as is or seared,
reheated, and served. Same with hamburger. Like hamburger rare but concerned
about food safety? 3 hours at 132 will render them medium rare and safe.

Just do a search for sous vide.

Caution! There are charts available for time, temperature, and thickness of
food for pasteurization. This is not something to get creative with. Find
reliable data and follow carefully.

I made a plug-in rig using a wall switch/dimmer that I think uses pulse
width modulation. That should reduce the temp in the crockpot which has only
fixed temps. Is that what you mean?

Vacuum sealed bag cooking sounds interesting. Been tempted to buy a sealer
and bags for other purposes, so maybe I'll get one and try it.
