Re: [MBZ] 123 300D Engine/Trans into a 116 300SD
Guys, The engines in both cars are fine. The tranny in the 116 is flacky. The tranny in the 123 is a rebuilt with less than 100K on it. Since a new/rebuilt tranny for the 116 would be more than the 123 is probably worth, I thought it might be worth considering having my Indy use the 123 as a donor for the 116. The 300SD is a much better shape car than the 123 and a smoother ride, so it might make sense to do that.or not. I'm just pondering and seeking advice/opinions. I still haven't found an answer for the 116 tranny problem. I bought the tranny used and my Indie installed it. If you let it shift easy (slow acceleration), it will shift fine or first shift when cold. If you give it medium acceleration, it wants to slip when it changes gears. If you accelerate hard and quickly let off at about 35 mph, it will jump right into 4th and runs fine. Once in 4th/drive it accelerates fine, except, of course, the kick down doesn't work, because it wants to slip. My Indie says he's checked the vac/modulator/linkage/etc. and all are supposedly fine. Anyone else have any thoughts. The kick down wasn't working correctly before and my Indie hooked it back up when he put in the tranny. Since the diesel doesn't really need 3rd gear, it would be nice to be able to just bypass it, but I don't know of any way to do that. Re: [MBZ] OT: Trial by fire for the Golf
Brake drag will definitely lower milage in your Golf -- I've picked up about 2 mpg since the rear brakes quit dragging and the pedal regained it's normal feel. I'm sure the issue was related to being parked for six months or so over the winter, but drag is drag. I'll be having the tires rotated and balanced and check out the "thump thump thump" I'm getting from the front, looks as though one of the wheels has damage. If so, I'll be finding a set of 15" wheels when the tires wear out, I'm NOT fond of the 18" wheels and rock hard tires it has on it. Steering is great, the ride stinks. Minor things drop the milage on these cars quite a bit -- there is a couple mpg in a minor alignment issue, the low profile tires can cost you a couple mpg in rolling resistance, and minor brake dragging issue clobber the milage. I was just shy of 700 miles on the last tank of fuel, would have tried for 700 but don't really want the car sitting in rain with an empty tank and dropping temps, way too much condesation. If the 116 has the big filter opening from above at the back of the engine (vs the 115 engine with the oil filter near the front, opening down) it will work. Everything else just bolts to the block or head. Roger, Did the engine in your W116 die? I'm not sure about mounting and such, but the vacuum and electrical issues would have to be minor at best. Re: [MBZ] Grease off concrete
Another idea for concrete cleaning is to get one of the rotating nozzles for the pressure washer. It is like the concentrated pin point spray nozzle but rotates so that you get better coverage. Works well for paint removal etc so might also help with oil on concrete. Re: [MBZ] Grease off concrete
Did you try engine cleaner on a test area? Sams club has the one Gmann suggested for around $50 per 5 gallon pail, and if you pick it up at the store, there's no freight charge according to their website. I've gotten some large spots of black oil off by soaking with engine cleaner, blasting it off with a power washer, sprinkling the spots with 3:1 Chlorox, and then blasting again. The oil was fairly fresh, so if yours is old, it may not work as well. Gerry "Kaleb wrote: > This is at the old house, renters move in tomorrow wanted to get it pretty > clean but it ain't happening. I have had fairly good success with the Meguire's clear plastic restoration product. 3M makes a kit with a buffer pad and related goodies that's supposed to be really good. I will say that in my limited experience with cloudy headlights, once they start to craze anything you do is temporary. I would also add that some of the warehouse stores with tire centers around here offer a service to do this where they put some sort of sealant on them after they're buffed out that makes it last for a long(er) period of time. What's weird here is that Florida does not recognize salvage titles on out of state vehicles. When I titled the S500 in Florida, the title from North Carolina was clearly marked as a salvage title. When I got the Florida title it said nothing, in other words, it looked no different that a regular title. Thinking they had made a mistake, I took it to the DMV (they have an office in my building, which makes it convenient) and pointed this out. Their response was that since the car came into the state as a "legitimate" vehicle, they couldn't mark it as a salvage vehicle. They also pointed out that if anyone bothered to check, this would come out as a result of a check of the VIN with the NTSB or whoever it is that keeps track of flood/salvage vehicles. My SL500 has a state issued VIN tag that's taped to the inside of the A pillar between the door hinges stating that it's a rebuilt vehicle and has been inspected by the State. Re: [MBZ] Grease off concrete
www.oileater.com Best product I've ever found. Totally biodegradable, no harmful effects to plants or animals and it emulsifies oil. Pour it on, spread it over the stain.. let it set, wash it off.. I use it to remove engine grime from Detroit Diesel engines.. and they come out spanking clean. Common wisdom with Detroit Diesels is, if you put a picture of one on the wall, there will be an oil spot under it by morning.. So I can say, this is good stuff. 0-60 speeds measured in seconds not in days.Car starts easily no matter how cold it is.Car free of rattles and clanks so common in the '70s.Car isn't all rusted out after 10 years.Lack of dying in all but the smallest crashes. Re: [MBZ] OT: Trial by fire for the Golf
I take out the tie rod(s) before loosening the adjusters, scribe center points on their ends, measure the distance between centers, scribe center points on the new link, transfer the measurement, tighten the adjuster, and install. I've never had to have a re-alignment. Before that, I made a bead chain adjustment bar like those used to set the old Beetles alignment and calculated the toe-in angle from the difference in the measurement front and back from rolling the car back and forth. That worked well too, but the bar disappeared when we retired and moved to Citrus County. Gerry ... > I'm about 1/2 way through my first tank on my wagon after adjusting the > injection pump timing.
