Re: [MBZ] W140 winder woes
Your posts are a stream of consciousness rather that a clearly defined list of issues. Can you give us specifics? Model year would help, too, as the interior systems went through a number of running production/design changes. Despite having the biodegradable harness, failures in the interior portions of the wiring are really rare. It typically fails where it's exposed to heat, such as the engine compartment. I have never seen an interior harness fail on one of these. In the W140, window operation is controlled by the convenience module, which,,if memory serves me correctly, is located in the trunk on the right side. Failures of the convenience module affect all windows, so if the problems are related to one or two and not all, it's unlikely to be the problem. Check out PepBoys for a group 49 battery. Unless my eyes are going bad, my local store has Bosch for $121 or $129, can't remember for positive. The last one I got was $109 and the one before was $99. In my two old 617s which aren't driven enough they sometimes don't last 3 years, but the good news is that the warranty replaces them or most of the cost. Re: [MBZ] Your jump starter
I think they're stretching the bounds of reality here, a 12ah battery pack isn't going to start many really dead batteries very often or at all. I also have doubts they can really pull 400a peak current over those weenie little cables. I've got a good set of 6ga jumper cables and if the car being jumped has a really dead battery they get really hot in use. The truth is for a jump pack nothing beats size and capacity. The battery in the Jetta is smaller than a Group 49, Group 47 I think and is rated at 70ah, its hard to believe something 1/6th the size would have much of a chance, especially if it was cold out at all. -Curt From: Rich Thomas via Mercedes To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Rich Thomas Sent: Monday, February 29, 2016 9:57 AM Subject: [MBZ] Your jump starter http://deals.kinja.com/ankers-new-car-jump-starting-battery-pack-is-no-bigger-1761917170 --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Car is a 1992 300SE. Salvage title purchased from a PnP with shot transmission. Put transmission into it, CEL is on due to under hood wire insulation. Vacuum pump under the rear seat is non functional, so no auto lock. Sunroof does open and close, but is balky. Rear back up sticks are not working. I am not aware of any things living in the rear, other than the battery and the amp/antenna. Interior is stock. Seats work, Becker works, AC blows cold, heat is not a furnace, but good enough. I think he has 220k on it. Transmission went in at 203k. I am aware that the window glass is overly heavy and can lead to failure of the window motors or bending of the regulator. Other interior wiring has been shown to be in good condition. A Marshall Booth fuse ectomy was done. Only screwy thing is the wiper (I think #17) will function erratically. clay On Feb 29, 2016, at 4:48 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: > Your posts are a stream of consciousness rather that a clearly defined list > of issues. > > Can you give us specifics? Re: [MBZ] W140 winder woes
Rear windows and front windows are completely different in their operation, I believe. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I haven't had to deal with windows in a W140 sedan, other than the rear. Fronts, I believe, are the typical "scissors" type of regulator. Rear windows use a cable and pulley setup that seems prone to fail by design. If the rear window(s) is/are acting up, he's best off to leave them alone. The most common failure I have seen usually involves the cable coming off the guide roller at the bottom or the roller itself breaking into pieces and the cable gets caught in the mechanism. Tell him to keep the windows up until summer. Based on the limited information, I don't think you have electrical issues, I think you have mechanical issues with the windows themselves. Curt, That model lacks the ability to measure DC current, which is useful when you are diagnosing a current drain that is killing the battery. Other than that, a good meter. The price looks amazing. It does measure capacitance, which mine does not, which could be useful at times. If one of your cheapo meters can measure current, maybe you don't need that function. I think I have a Fluke 77? It is meant for automotive work, came in a nice protective case with a kick-stand and with alligator clip adapters for the test leads. I had to shop around a bit to find a place that sold it for a decent price. For most things I use the cheapo Hazard Fraught meters, I keep one in each car, and they are good enough for basic diagnosis. - Max Charleston SC On Mon, Feb 29, 2016 at 12:43 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > I think its high time for me to update to a good multimeter. Re: [MBZ] OT: Multimeter
On of the advantages of the cheap Chinee meters is that should you smoke it or lose it, no big deal. If I did that to a Fluke I would be really upset. I have some CTs I use for measuring current, which I prefer over putting a meter inline, unless it's a fairly low value. Most meters won tolerate over current well, which often toasts them. I also have my trusty Amprobe with some nice accessories that allow me to measure current on a standard line cord, too. There's something really attractive about the Amprobe. It's certainly a retro sort of device, but they're well built, accurate, and pretty bulletproof. Re: [MBZ] OT: Multimeter
On my last active duty job, an electrician left a bunch of tools behind after installing some new circuits. There was a really nice Fluke and a big tool box full of goodies, and a nice step ladder. I contacted the company he worked for and asked them to send someone to pick up the tools. Repeated the request a couple days later. Several weeks went by and tools were still waiting. I called and said if they weren't gone by the end of the week, I was going to keep them. I was truly hoping they wouldn't pick them up, but the next day someone finally got them. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I've got a radioschmuck analog meter thats served me well, I've also got a cheapo Harbor Freight one thats really crappy but is useful in environments where it might get damaged or stolen. I don't need much, DCV, ACV, and resistance are all I've ever used or know how to use I think. ACV is required on old snowmobiles with super simple electrics. Most cheap meters use a shunt for measuring current, and when it gets zapped, the meter is toast. The meter I’ve had since the late 1980s is an Extech. Bought it as a cheap traveling meter that had frequency, something that was not common on cheap meters of the day. Very important for generator work... I built an analog frequency meter when we were living off-grid to display the generator's frequency. A large analog meter, a 555 wired as a single-shot multivibrator, a step down transformer to provide the AC signal, and a bridge rectifier, filter cap, and a three-terminal regulator to provide the DC. It still works very well. Thanks, Craig. That is correct, Wilton. W123 and W126 are interchangeable. W124 are not. Sadly, there was a guy selling a kit on eBay a while back with everything you needed for like $14, but he’s no longer doing this. Certainly the parts were cheaper than that, but the convenience factor kicks in when you don’t have a knackers in town that has cars older than about 5-7 years, like me.
-Curt From: Rich Thomas via Mercedes To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Rich Thomas Sent: Monday, February 29, 2016 9:57 AM Subject: [MBZ] Your jump starter http://deals.kinja.com/ankers-new-car-jump-starting-battery-pack-is-no-bigger-1761917170 --R I was thinking about asking them for a sample so I could test it and report the results here, MBCA and BMWMOA. Re: [MBZ] MB Batteries
I never really figured out the "difference" between 49, 93, and H8, although 93 often has lower CCA and H8 often has higher price. The AGM batteries at FLAPS are usually labeled H8. If I don't see a 49 on the shelf, I look for a 93 or H8. Mitch. And in my looking this week, I am also being shown "96" which I've not heard of before, but 93 seems to be out. 93 is a couple mm different in 1 or 2 dimensions, but fits fine. The last battery I bought was a 93. They were $25 to $50 cheaper than a 49, for no apparent reason. Both 93 and 49 were shown as "H8." I wonder if H8 is some yuro or ISO numbering system rather than the battery industry group sizes we are used to. now regardless of nomenclature they all seem to be $175 up. advance still have a 20% deal, but that is still $140 + $20 core and 7% tax., so near $180. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT: Multimeter
A fast glance at the bay of fleas shows Fluke 335 for $89 used. I use the ac, DC and ohmmeter functions regularly. I agree a HF will work for almost anything except GP diagnosis and perhpas the tach signal. I try to keep HF or cheap multimeters that came with A+ training kits in each car. Even with those, you can detect an open GP, the most common failure. It would be difficult, but perhaps not impossible to detect the difference between a good GP and a dead short with a cheapo meter. I have a radiojunk analog folding meter I bought in Kailua in 1989. Harry Fuller had one just like it and I used his and liked it. It was about $35 then. It could sort GPs better than anything until I got the fluke. BTW, Harry was a Pearl Harbor survivor, He was on Ford Island during the bombing and strafing. - Max Charleston SC On Mon, Feb 29, 2016 at 12:43 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: I think its high time for me to update to a good multimeter. I found a Fluke 101 on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Fluke-101-Multimeter-Equipment-Industrial/dp/B00JT5RUUU/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1456767527&sr=8-10&keywords=flukewhich seems like all I'll ever need but with this I'm just being a brand shopper, I know Fluke is (was?) good and just buying based on that. I've got a couple Amazon gift cards so its the easy way to go. Thoughts? Re: [MBZ] OT: Multimeter
Scott sez: Is it possible you only blew the fuse when you "fried" those meters? Even my cheapie meters had a fuse for overcurrent protection. And I had to replace that fuse a few times too That was one of the things i liked about that radiojunk meter. It not only had an easily accessible fuse, but carried a spare in the battery compartment too! I blew the fuse a couple times trying to measure volties without switching the meter back to volts from Ohms. I had a couple of cheap ones I fried that did not have fuses. Flukes are pretty hard to kill by doing dumb things. They are well built with lots of "buttsaver" circuits to keep it from blowing up when you do something stupid. I had a small toolbox analog meter I used for 20 years. It was intertec or inter something. I probably trouble shot more circuits with it than anything else. Dishwashers, washers, dryers, cars, household electric, control circuits, etc. It was good enough it could sort glow plugs. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Andy Sez: Your point? That was 50 yrs. Ago. 2010 was 50 years ago?My math says Sheets Byrd, the grand wizzer of the KKK was a (D) leader 6 years ago. Remember Michael Vick and the dog fights? Byrd gave a speechifying about that. I guess that was 50 years ago huh? Either that or he came back from the dead to speechify. My point? Read my last post. The hypocrisy on the (D) side is obvious. I realize that you are suggesting that Pillary should name Duke to the position of secretary of hate, but you still claim that the opposition is racist, while the (D) party and its candidates and incumbents are in fact the racists. Re: [MBZ] OT: Multimeter
Looking for bang for the buck here, willing to spend up to about $100. Love my Fluke 83. Have bought two Fluke 87's, used, under your price mark. The protective current fuse alone costs more than a HF meter on sale! But there's no contest. The 83 is what I reach for, year after year. (Digits are a bit larger than the 87, and the battery lasts longer on it.) The Fluke, with a clamp-on AC/DC ammeter, is all you need. The Flukes are many times faster at reading than the HF's, and have analog scales too for the jumpy stuff. (I prefer the 83's analog scale to the 87's.) The 87 is true RMS, and has a backlight, and one extra digit of precision. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
