[MBZ] Sunday's 300SEL Fun

2017-03-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yup, I did some work on the 300SEL today…Low impact day today after all the
major gains yesterday.

After reading a thread on setting the duty cycle, I realized I have a tester
for the diagnostic codes that I had been using on my W140 cars before I got a
DAS/XENTRY system.

Went out and dumped codes on the 300SEL. Pretty much all stuff I figured I
would see based on it probably never having been cleared, or if it was, not in
many years. I'm going to drive it to work tomorrow, a good 40 mile round trip
about 50-50 highway/city and check it again when I get home to see if any codes
get thrown.

Went out this afternoon with a can of DeOxIt and a red straw. Popped the
buttons off the seat adjuster switches, gave them all a good shot of DeOxIt and
then worked the heck out of them. Some had been a little touchy as far as
working I had noticed, so I figured the switches probably needed a good
cleaning.

I'm going to go out a little later and put the code tester on my 1990 350SDL
and see what it has in the way of stored codes. Should be interesting…

Re: [MBZ] Turbo tune up

2017-03-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Oh! I finally figgered out you a re talking about an SD OM617.

On the SDL with OM603, it is a rubber "hose" with a hose clamp. It can
be a bit of a bugger from the top to get the hose and clamp in place on
the bottom, but with the lower panel off under the engine, it is not hard.

Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
March 12, 2017 at 12:30 PM
Removing the plastic U tube (between air cleaner and turbo) is indeed easy
on a 126 Diesel. But the hard part (for me, anyway) was getting it back on
without "rolling" the lower rubber gasket. That gasket won't seal right if
it's out of position and you don't want to suck unfiltered air into the
turbo. The old gasket had swelled and gotten soft and was hard to install.
Eventually, I bought a new gasket which was firmer. This gasket is like a
big, thick rubber band.

Re: [MBZ] Turbo tune up

2017-03-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You can also cut the rolled edge off the inlet of the U tube so you can see the
position of the seal. It also allows you to put the seal on the turbo inlet
and then push the U tube over it to make sure it’s properly seated, too.

My 300D has this modification, which I had heard about but had never
experienced. Definitely makes it a lot easier, since that U tube is as hard as
a rock. I’ve always wondered if the U tubes were any more flexible when new….

Yep. Put the separator under tension so that the joint knows which way the
wind is blowing, then use the two hammers to get its attention. Don't
remove the nut on the end first, just loosen it. That'll keep it from

Re: [MBZ] HF Ball Joint Separator

2017-03-12 Thread MG via Mercedes
When you use the tool, tighten the separation bolt and then hit
the steering knuckle right where the tie rod bolt goes through.
That should pop it loose. If not tighten the bolt some more and
hit again. A few good licks usually make it pop. Do the same with
where the ball joint connects to the LCA. I've also found that
using an air hammer on those points can work better, more
vibration for less force.

[MBZ] HF Ball Joint Separator

2017-03-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Snagged one of these this morning. Wife’s SL500 has a sloppy inner tie rod end
and I have a new tie rod coming tomorrow, so it will be a good opportunity to
try it out. I have a pickle fork, but if I don’t have to beat on something to
separate it, it’s all the better, I think.

Drove the 300SEL this morning for my early morning grocery run and a later trip
to HF. Runs great, no issues. I’ll probably drive it to work tomorrow to
stretch its legs a bit. I know the first tank of fuel will have sucky mileage
since it’s spent a fair amount of time idling and running on five cylinders in
the last week, but I really want to get a full tank through it to see how it’s
doing.

I need to get an analog voltmeter so I can set the duty cycle of the fuel
system. As I understand it, once these systems are set up properly they’ll
even run pretty well in limp home mode. Can’t beat that. Here’s a really good

[MBZ] 124 Windshield Goodness

2017-03-12 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Wilton - did you have MB replace the windshield in the 124 300D?

Yesterday I finally had some time to clean off the windshield from Wilton's
124 sedan, which you probably recall was an '87 model. I plan to install
it into my '95 sedan, which has an aftermarket windshield that has
cracked.

The '95 sedan has the VIN / Airbag tag mounted low on the dash, and is
supposed to show through a little window in the black ceramic coating
around the edge of the window. '87 is different, VIN tag is on the
A-column. I thought I'd need to scrape off the ceramic coating in the
right spot to make a window.

Someone up there must be looking out for me, the VIN window was there. As
I was removing the old sealant with a razor scraper, it became visible.
Some cleaning was required to remove all the old black sealant, but it is
perfectly positioned and obviously "factory".

Either this is a replacement windshield, or MB was planning ahead.

Re: [MBZ] I want

2017-03-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
For hunting wascal wabbits as indicated in the pciture,, ditch the heavy
rotary hardware in favor of a 22/410 over/under. If you can't get the
wabbit with one shot, go home. (Same for bushy-tail tree rodents, only
you don't need the 410 for that)

Here is a picture of what comes to mind for drive configuration. This
particular picture is NOT of me driving my squirrel hunting gun... honest.
;))

I presume it takes moderator blessings to post the picture.. so..
"please"?

This track configuration, with drive motors mounted high, should give
true

"4x4" for your camera, wifi reporting, guard machine. And your vast estate
will be covered... and you'll have fun building more than one.. ;))

Re: [MBZ] Turbo tune up

2017-03-12 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Leak and turbo performance may be unrelated, do the test that Peter
described. Removing the intake rubber accordion duct is easy enough on a
124, can't be much worse on a 126, and see how she feels. (Are you feeling
good today? Can I check to make sure?)

Turbo non-performance can be related to a clogged pressure feed line from
the intake to the over-pressure cut-off valve, thence to the ALDA. If that
line is clogged or leaking, turbo can do its thing all day long but no
extra fuel is delivered and performance is the same as non-turbo.

My '87 wagon was only producing 8 psi from the turbo, I had to adjust the
waste gate rod. The internal spring for the waste gate control valve will
tend to weaken over time and open too early, and the turbo pressure won't
build to the factory spec. One complete turn of the rod in the shorter
(tighter) direction will increase the pressure by 4 psi.
