Re: [MBZ] OT Old house projects

2017-05-31 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I think the three issues with knob and tube are (1) possible arcing at poor
solder joints, (2) brittle old natural rubber insulation, and (3) possible
insulation overheating/failure if insulation was added. I replaced all the KNT
in the attic and the insulation just crumbled when I bent the wire. I left one
KNT circuit that powers the ceiling lights because I didn't want to rip up the
upstairs floors but I breakered it down to 10 amps with an arc-fault breaker.
I think KNT is safe if properly installed and not disturbed. But the
connections were soldered using soldering irons heated by a gasoline blow
torch, so skill was a big factor.

Re: [MBZ] OT Old house projects

2017-05-31 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Knob and tube has excellent insulation potential, very hard to get a short
due to the physical isolation of the two conductors. It is also
air-cooled, so it doesn't overheat as much under overload. On the down
side, there's never a safety ground, and it is more exposed to physical
damage since it doesn't have a second insulation layer. And, it's old,
which means that bad connections are going to be a much more likely
prospect. Also, it's a lot more likely to have cloth insulation rather
than rubber or vinyl, and neutral vs hot is probably not color-coded, so
you have to pay attention to what you are doing.

Disclaimer: I have a box of knobs and tubes in the garage somewhere.

Several years ago someone said you could replace the plastic tops and bottoms
of radiators easily if you bought the special tools to uncrimp and then
re-crimp them from the core. Here is a supply house that probably has the top
for your Mercedes if you can figure out their classification for the model
Mercedes.
Probably calling them would be best.
I've tried patching cracks in the top, but they always fail.

Back about 10 years ago there was a old Tudor style 4000sqft house that
used to belong to a long time dr in town that was a beautiful old house
built in the early 1900s. It ended up forclosed on and was listed for
about 70-80K in Claremore where we used to live. Housing market very
strong there. Anyway wife was a realtor then also and we had a loan all
lined up and everything but ended up not proceeding. Whoever got it got a
steal, and they have really fixed it up nice.

On the other end of the spectrum and you seen people who buy old victorian
style houses, then completely gut them and "update" them so when you walk
in them, they look like any other modern house? Well back in the late 90's
there was this victorian type house that came up for sale. It was listed
at 89k I think. Anyway, the owner was an old teacher who passed away and
the house was quite original. Had the most beautiful woodwork and
craftsmanship in the house it was amazing. It needed a little work but
nothing too major. I would have loved to have bought it but I was young
and knew nothing about buying houses. It ended up selling and later it
came back up on the market for sale and I went and looked at it again.
Apparently whoever bought it went in and completely gutted the house down
to the wall studs. I mean completely. Even the original beautiful
wooden starcase was out, it its place they had build a new one out of
regular lumber. It was sad, very sad. If I remember right they got
forclosed on. Later on somebody else bought it and it later came up for
sale, this time at around $250k if memory serves. It was like a brand new
house inside. It was very very sad remembering what it used to look like.
It has been foreclosed on a couple of times since then and is currently
foreclosed and was listed, but for some reason the listing has been
removed. Here it is on zillow. Take a look at the photos. Look at the
fireplace now, it used to be this big fancy dark wood deal, same with the
stare case. It looks like they just put run of the mill Lowes hardware in
it. If you look at the photo of the back of the house, that upstairs off
the back of the house used to be sort of like a screened in porch sort of
deal, was a room with windows on all sides. I am betting that was a
sleeping room back in the days before AC. For some reason they have fully
enclosed it and it is just a windowless room now. Heck it even looks
like it some of the photos they installed pergo type flooring either over
or replacing the original hardwoods. Of course they have carpeting over
most of the hardwood flooring as well. I do not understand why people do
this to an old house. If you want it new go buy a new house.

Never saw one of those in person.
I don't think they were as common as the 160 and 305 were.
My dad bought a used 160 Dream in 1971, then the next winter he traded

Re: [MBZ] OT Old house projects

2017-05-31 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Whoever got it got
a steal, and they have really fixed it up nice.

On the other end of the spectrum and you seen people who buy old
victorian style houses, then completely gut them and "update" them so
when you walk in them, they look like any other modern house? Well back
in the late 90's there was this victorian type house that came up for
sale. It was listed at 89k I think. Anyway, the owner was an old
teacher who passed away and the house was quite original. Had the most
beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship in the house it was amazing. It
needed a little work but nothing too major. I would have loved to have
bought it but I was young and knew nothing about buying houses. It
ended up selling and later it came back up on the market for sale and I
went and looked at it again. Apparently whoever bought it went in and
completely gutted the house down to the wall studs. I mean
completely. Even the original beautiful wooden starcase was out, it its
place they had build a new one out of regular lumber. It was sad, very
sad. If I remember right they got forclosed on. Later on somebody else
bought it and it later came up for sale, this time at around $250k if
memory serves. It was like a brand new house inside. It was very very
sad remembering what it used to look like. It has been foreclosed on a
couple of times since then and is currently foreclosed and was listed,
but for some reason the listing has been removed. Here it is on
zillow. Take a look at the photos. Look at the fireplace now, it used
to be this big fancy dark wood deal, same with the stare case. It looks
like they just put run of the mill Lowes hardware in it. If you look at
the photo of the back of the house, that upstairs off the back of the
house used to be sort of like a screened in porch sort of deal, was a
room with windows on all sides. I am betting that was a sleeping room
back in the days before AC. For some reason they have fully enclosed it
and it is just a windowless room now. Heck it even looks like it some
of the photos they installed pergo type flooring either over or
replacing the original hardwoods. Of course they have carpeting over
most of the hardwood flooring as well. I do not understand why people
do this to an old house. If you want it new go buy a new house.

Ja..too much pressure? Like he overheated it severely the first

So a couple of weeks ago I patched a crack in the kids radiator after
he hit something which pushed one of the side supports until the tank.
This weekend he said it blew. I took a look at it today and the patch
was holding, it had a huge crack at the top near the neck. I have seen
the necks break off but never this.

Re: [MBZ] This Looks Nice, But....

2017-05-31 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I should have thought that red MB convertible that you had (maybe still
have) would have fit that bill pretty nicely given where you live.
The reason I am reluctant to buy a newer boat has a lot to do with the
cost of one. I would not use it enough to justify the cost.
If I had a $40K boat I would be paying a lot for insurance and I would
be much more worried about it getting scratched up while tied at the
dock etc.
I don't mind being something of a bottom feeder for boats although I
have been looking at ones that run closer to $10K.
I really do not want a fancy fiberglass thing with lots of upholstery. I
would rather have a more rugged aluminum boat but they do not seem as
common around here and they hold their value well so the cost would
likely be closer to $20K for a decent one and that is getting beyond
what I really want to spend on a boat. The newer 4 stroke outboards are
nice but expensive and the cost of repairs will be substantial if it
goes bad too.
Bigger older 2 stroke motors use too much fuel so I have generally been
looking at 4 or 6 cylinder inboard outboards.

I don't think safety is a big issue with a boat. No seat belts or air
bags etc. Speed is probably the biggest issue with boats. There are lots
of them that will exceed 70 mph and that is sort of silly. I have no
need to go that fast on the water. Accidents happen but are more
avoidable on open water. Failure to pay attention is the most likely
cause. A 20 foot boat is big enough for the waters we use and still
small enough to fairly easily launch and retrieve etc. The only real
issue is reliability as I don't want to be out on the lake and have the
motor give up. We would have a smaller auxiliary outboard engine but it
would take some time to come home. Cell phone coverage is ok so we could
possibly call for help and get someone to come tow us in. I don't think
of that as a safety item however in comparison to cars. Old cars are
generally not as safe as newer cars - especially if one goes back into
the 50's and 60's. I know Mercedes was a leader in designing safer cars
but the old ones generally cannot match the newer ones.

I am rambling so I will stop now.

Talked to the seller., Some Hispanic guy I could hardly understand, doesn’t

When I asked him about things like the back seat and headliner, he said

I explained to him that there was nothing of the sort in the ad…

Re: [MBZ] Taco Bell

2017-05-31 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I heard something about that on the radio. The millennial women have figured
out the men their own are are snowflakes and have started going after older
established men because they want stability. Even to the point of giving up
having kids and potentially taking care of the man when he gets too old. I have
been saying for years if I was a good looking young woman I would skip working
hard building up money etc and just skip to getting me a man that already had
some.

Several feral cats are in the neighborhood - they don't seem to make much
of a dent, though I'd hate to see the rodent population if they weren't
here. They do like us feeding the birds, making them easier to catch. We
figure there are enough birds to go around.

We have 5-6 cats outside plus whatever barn cats live around here. I have a
bunch of seats stored in the barn and have not seen any mice damage on them. I
wish the cars would trail out to the back 40 where the parts cars are and keep
mice out of the cars. I do see mice crap and such in cars. Would love to figure
out a way to deter them. We have coyotes around here you can hear at night.
Down at the parts car lot I see where the prairie grass is beat down around
them and evidence of dirt dug out from under some of them. I have not gotten
down under to look but I wonder of coyotes live under cars during the day. No
telling what I will find when I happen to move one out with the tractor.

It's nowhere yet. A fellow list member was looking for a car and I figured this
would fit the bill. If the list member does not want to do a deal maybe I
should put it in BAT. Btw, that is how you take photos to try and sell a
vehicle. When I do list cars for sale I get very little emails about them
because I put lots of high quality photos and video up. Usually the first one
to show up ends up buying it. I leave little room in the ad for questions so it
just comes down to driving the car.

I use a private subscription service specifically for cars on Craigslist called:

https://makemodelsearch.com

It’s $3.99/month, but they index CL roughly three times a day and have search
filters for “newly listed” ads, too. I was a little leery of paying for this
since there’s not a lot of information about them, but so far it’s been great!

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 138, Issue 228

2017-05-31 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I actually have a letter from the county saying that I don't need any
permits to build anything on our land. We are having a 24' x 40' garage
built beside the house now - no other contact with the "authorities" other
than the inquiry that resulted in the letter.

The garage is to keep the rodents out of the car wiring, and to get the
gardening tools, mowers, etc. out of the hangar, maybe even the wood
working tools.
