Re: [MBZ] Old house pics

2017-06-01 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes

This type of blown in insulation can create a moisture problem (rot and
termites) if there is no moisture barrier in the inside walls. I presume the
inside walls are plaster on lathe, which would almost certainly lack a moisture
barrier. The same goes for vinyl siding. There are paints that offer some
resistance to moisture migration but they are a poor substitute for plastic
sheeting.

The existence of all those holes implies the previous owner wasn't happy with
HVAC costs. A better strategy (vs insulation) may be sealing air leaks and a
high-efficiency mini-split heat pump system that only heats/cools rooms as
needed

In my old house I sealed all ceiling perforations and then blew insulation in
attic, maybe 16 in deep. But I used many cases of caulk to seal all gaps from
the baseboard and the ceiling. In my opinion, air leaks are a bigger problem
than heat conduction through walls. My windows were not original so I replaced
them all with vinyl (very quiet and airtight).

I wouldn’t worry too much about the electrical and plumbing. My builder wanted
to rip down the lathe-plaster walls to do minor (IMO) electrical work (add
outlets). So I pulled and terminated new romex DIY and left long pigtails for
the electrician to connect to his new breaker box. I had a plumber replace ALL
the supply plumbing with PEX and (almost) all the waste plumbing with PVC.
Plumbing and electrical materials are not very expensive but the professional
labor is. I think one chandelier cost more than all the wire, boxes, outlets,
etc.

I see this like rust on an old Mercedes. If the foundation is OK (or fixable)
and the framing (joists, rafters, studs) is OK it might be worth a try,
assuming you have plenty of spare time.

[MBZ] Evaporating ATF

2017-06-01 Thread clay via Mercedes
I had done a filter and fluid on the ATF for Allen in March. It was being less
than happy at shifts and cold start required a spool up to get movement to
engage. I was pretty sure that fluid was not an issue, as it was fresh and
full, but I gave it a peek last night and found the fluid was at least a quart
low. I had not thought I had seen a leak from the pan, but maybe it was
evaporating, or I must have forgotten to check the fluid a few days after the
filter change and adjust. This far past that date, I just installed the quart
of ATF and called it good. I will re-check in a day or so and adjust.

AS for the prior post about things alighting, I meant to say that was for Polei
and her blue lights.

[MBZ] ITS ALIGHT!

2017-06-01 Thread clay via Mercedes
Well, sort of. I did the placement of the bubble gum lamps and filler. The
sanding went well, as did the primer application. Then I found that my white
paint was not on the shelf. I had to run off to the paint shop for a few
rattle cans of white. I was hoping for the $1.33 stuff I got last year, but
ended up with Rustoleum automotive paint. Five cans, two for the initial spray
(first did a spotty coat all over) the roof is now white, but there was a fuzzy
area that needed a better sanding to smooth out. After putting some 400 then
600 grit on it, I did the third can. I have to wait a few days before I whip
out the sanding blocks for doing a shine (800-3000 grit).

Now I need to build a set of covers for the lights so I can drive the car
without making smokey all excited.

Probably not until the price of gas goes up quite a bit. Duke Energy is in the
process of building a gas operated plant here in Crystal River, and a large

Sure, and I'm sure I could fix it but its either a ton of time doing it
yourself or a ton of money paying somebody else to do it. If the rot is really
bad it could be a bunch of money and a bunch of time...
You can jack a house like that yourself, get a couple of the 5 ton bottle
jacks, screw jacks would be good too if you can find old ones. Lots of 4x4s.

Did the ac work when I got it? I remember it had that annoying driveshaft
vibration. I had 3 or 4 SDLs at the time so sold that one. I do remember seeing
what had to have been that car on Craigslist a while later for cheap.

Rot is like rust in a car, what you can see is a small portion of what there

Foundation issues look bad and expensive.
Holes in the siding are where they blew insulation  into the walls.

Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes June 1,
2017 at 1:46 PM I went back over to that house today and took a few
photos for those that are curious. There are a couple of photos I did
not take. In the downstairs bathroom they have built a closet around
the hot water tank. There are old termite trails/slight damage in the
wall behind that. Also in the door frame at the top there is more
severe termite damage on that same wall. There are centricon bait
stations outside so obviously they had termites in the past but does
 not appear to now.
Looks to me like it needs those cable ties put under the house or
foundation replaced in sections? Most likely a job best handled by
one of those foundation repair places.

It's not like he needs another project, he must be getting bored working on
old MBs. Since it would be a hobby, not a business, being a money pit

Probably not as I think they are only on the one side.
There is concrete between the pile and the foundation I think which is
intended to prevent the foundation from spreading outward.

IF it is not a labour of love that you plan to live in, then just forget
it. You are already a busy man with too many projects on the go and you

It will not end well.

With that info alone you could roughly calculate the cost of the
materials.

Going to be a bunch more to lift the house off and support it and dig
the old foundation out and remove it and haul it away, and then put in
the forms and pour new footings and walls etc.

Prices here are no doubt different but a basic example is that my son
built a new garage last summer.

We built the forms and tied the rebar etc so no labour in that part.
The garage floor is 24 X 28 and 6 inches thick through the middle. 18
inches thick around the exterior for a couple of feet.

$1K worth of gravel under the floor.
$7K for the concrete and the fellows who poured it and made it nice
and smooth.
So, add in the form material and the steel and the floor alone cost
about $10K.

Get an estimate from a house mover to jack it up, tear out the old basement,
pour new 9' (or 10') walls; then put in a new floor. That would give you a
good usable basement that can be finished. You could even build a bomb
shelter/tornado shelter/safe in a corner of the basement.

If you think you might live there, i'd do this for sure!

Get an estimate from a house mover to jack it up, tear out the old
basement, pour new 9' (or 10') walls; then put in a new floor. That
would give you a good usable basement that can be finished. You could
even build a bomb shelter/tornado shelter/safe in a corner of the basement.

If you think you might live there, i'd do this for sure!

I went back over to that house today and took a few photos for those
that are curious. There are a couple of photos I did not take. In the
downstairs bathroom they have built a closet around the hot water
tank. There are old termite trails/slight damage in the wall behind
that. Also in the door frame at the top there is more severe termite
damage on that same wall. There are centricon bait stations outside so
obviously they had termites in the past but does not appear to now.
Looks to me like it needs those cable ties put under the house or
foundation replaced in sections? Most likely a job best handled by one
of those foundation repair places.

A 250 Dream?
Never saw one of those in person.
I don't think they were as common as the 160 and 305 were.
My dad bought a used 160 Dream in 1971, then the next winter he
traded it in on a new/leftover 1971 Suzuki T500.

My first bike was a CB200T, a direct descendant of the CB160.

Re: [MBZ] OT Old house projects

2017-06-01 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
It was a great house! But, with a growing family, it was too small. Sometimes
I wish I still had it. But, when family came to visit or the new baby arrived
it was too crowded. My current house isn't quite the polar opposite (meaning
boring new cheap construction), but it is close. My current house was built in
1979 which is not new, but it is so much newer than the old one. In the 1929
house, I had to deal with 80 years of patchwork updates. But, in this house, I
still have to deal with odd wiring sometimes. The previous owner was an
electrician so there are some odd wiring issues. He was a fan of doing his own
projects. That means having electricity is the shed AND the gazebo in the back
yard. I had to replace a dimmer switch in my basement last week and it was
not a simple job because he had wired a bunch of things into one switch.

Re: [MBZ] After a Long Night of Hookers and Blow....

2017-06-01 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Plan A.
Get a PPI and if it's as clean as it looks, offer him $11k or so.

Plan B.
You WILL find the car you're looking for, but it will come at a price. Flip
another Florida car or ‎two on BaT to improve your war chest. By September
you'll have $20k and be able to get what you want.

That 300CD in Tampa I posted last week could've easily sold for $5,500-$7,500.

Here's a few to get you thinking.

This one looks familiar...

https://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/6116746426.html

Everyone wants a bargain. What difference does it make if a car is $5,000 or
$15,000, if the required effort to generate the extra $10,000 is minimal? You
generated an extra $4,500 in a few weeks, with maybe 20 hours of work ($225 an
hour ain't bad. That's attorney or physician money).
It is repeatable.
It becomes a game, numbers on a page...

I don't know, my radar is up on this one. I did some checking on the contact
information and it's totally out of whack with the stated logistics. That is,
the seller was in WI and now rural UT. Their phone and other records tie them
to southwestern FL.

They came down $5000 on my claim of stated value without hesitation. That makes me
suspect. Someone who has "spoken to dealers" about a car's price isn't going to
back off their claims so easily.

Something doesn't jive on this. I may call today and see what I can find out.

Not really. Hagerty and PPI put it at about $10k. My biggest concern
would be the miles it’s got (160k) and the location.

I could see maybe $8500.
