Bent, with clean title. Bought it from Hertz. Was either the best reason ever
to have purchased the damage waiver, or one very expensive rental.

Cruze LT/Premier, cloth seats, don't know about the rest of the options until I
go to Cleveland and drag it home, then I'll read all the build codes off the
tag. Sure would be nice if they'd include a picture of the build tag instead of
the GVWR tag from the door frame in those sales.
Good thing I bought a truck three days ago, eh?

Put the hitch on the ML today. It started getting dark when I got back from
getting a spare tire for the Cruze (left front on the car is flat) so I didn't
finish wiring the trailer plug on the ML.

Was supposed to get a fender for the ML this morning, but winning the Cruze
auction rearranged my day, and the bank taking 70 minutes to cut me a check to
pay for it really messed up my schedule and took the 240 mile fender buying
trip right off my calendar. Teller printed the check before sticking the blank
check in the printer, so it printed on plain white paper instead of check
paper. Then she voided that one and printed another on the back of the check
when she put the check in the printer upside down. Then the computer told her
she wasn't allowed to just print an unlimited number of checks, she'd already
printed two and that was the limit...

Eventually they had me cash the backwards printed check and use the money to
buy another one, but selling me the 2nd check required manager approval and
there was no manager on duty...70 minutes for a 10 minute task that should have
taken 3 minutes.

[MBZ] Eclipse traffic

2017-08-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So when we got to Jefferson City MO capital it was not crowded, found a good
parking spot etc. one of the 7 NASA trailers was there so we waited in line to
tour it. Then found a spot on the grass in from of the capital steps. Watched
it then toured the capital. Upon leaving we ran into the traffic. It was bumper
to bumper all the way back down to i44 at Lebanon Mo. Most of the way was at
20mph or less, sometimes hit 40. Finally got on I44 and figured it would
moving. Bzzzt, wrong. It was the same thing for at least 30-40 miles. At points
in would clear enough to discover it was Texas drivers staying in the left
lane. It got to where it was faster to drive on the right lane. Every time we
hit a slow down it was a Texas driver in the left lane. So we left a little
before 2pm on what should have been a 4 hour drive. It has been 6 hours and we
finally made it to Joplin where we stopped at the waffle house to eat, where I
see there is another traffic pileup ahead. Still got an hour and 20
minutes to go assuming no more slow downs.

I don't use R12 but what I do use goes to 39 at those temps.
Consider that Mercedes puts a low temp sensor in the evaporator
to keep it from freezing up. It shuts off the Compressor at 39.

We used to fill the R12 till there was no foam to be seen. A
couple of small bubbles are OK but mostly I looked for a clear
black field with no bubbles.

2017-08-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I saw no eclipse, had to watch the replays, as I was sitting for another
certification exam.

I’m sure it was nice. I believe we were around 80% of totality here.

However, Mama always told me not to look into the eye's of the sun.

Very impressive here in MD - at 85 percent. Had a bit of cloud cover from
time to time, then a quick shower toward the end but I was able to see the
beginning and end phases. Even at 85 percent that little sliver of sun is
VERY powerful, so nowhere near pitch dark. :( . The Smithsonian handed

Re: [MBZ] Allen took it in the behind

2017-08-21 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I had a similar event back in the 70s when a Jeep drove into the back of my
240Z. I was trapped at a traffic light with cars in front and one side and
curb on other side. I released brakes just before impact (and reapplied to
avoid hitting car in front) so no damage to suspension but there was
considerable sheet metal damage. It took some time to find my glasses after
the impact. The worst part is that the damage opened up some sealed seams
between panels (that body shop didn't catch) which allowed exhaust to get into
car. Expanding foam sealer eventually solved this.

Re: [MBZ] OT In the path of the eclipse

2017-08-21 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Really? This was my third significant eclipse that we've viewed with our
eclipse glasses. I don't know how I've been able to lay hands on them as
needed, but I did. The experience is pretty much the same, depending on how
much of the eclipse you get.
It looks like we will get even more than the 80% this time in 2024, and
should be in the 100% path is 2045 - don't know that we'll be alive then,
but . . .

You're on a buying spree lately...
I had a Cruze rental last week I was really pleased with it, even with an auto
box it was pretty zippy. Fit and finish were far above what I would expect for
a low end Chevy. Rear seat legroom was way bigger than I had expected. Overall
it was much better than I'd expected. Did about 30mpg in very heavy LA traffic.

I've got a helmet and one of the masks you hold in front of your face. My auto
darkening helmet goes to 13 but I need a tv remote to keep it dark and keeping
the alignment of the remote correct is a pain. The mask is darker than the
helmet and seems to work well.

Never one to listen to good advice, I upped my bid after getting
outbid at 2am. As soon as the auction was over, I bought a Behr
radiator on RockAuto, it's supposed to be here tomorrow. After I paid
for the car and arranged transport, I ordered the headlight (stupid,
should have bought that this morning too). Looks like my headlight
will probably ship Monday and get here Tuesday or Wednesday.

I called the towing company my salvage yard uses, the SOB wanted to
know what kind of car it was before quoting me a price. "A Mercedes?
That's a different situation..." The SOB told me right out that he was
ripping me off because my $750 car sounded expensive, and when I
complained he said he had to feed his children. Well, see how well the
kids eat on $0 of my money tonight. He quoted me $180 to move the ML
36 miles. $5 a loaded mile, what a bargain...
CoPart quoted me $139 to arrange shipping within 2 weeks. I could swap
radiators in their parking lot and get home faster than that.

Two of the tow drivers parked at CoPart quoted me $130, one would do
it this afternoon right before CoPart closes, the other one wanted to
deliver it Monday.

So, hopefully by 5pm I'll get a call from a tow trucker telling me
he's leaving CoPart with my ML on board.

CoPart's take: $230 buyer's fee. $59 gate fee for handing it off to
the towing company. $50 title fee, includes the $15 the state charges
for a title so I guess it's really a $35 Documentation Charge.

We are at the state capital if Missouri to watch the eclipse. I brought the
welding helmets but the info tent had some of the glasses they gave us, glad I
did not buy any! There are scattered clouds here but looks like a good chance
we will get a good view

Well, I don't know what gravitational effects the alignment of the sun and moon
have ‎on the Earth's crust, but there will be another total solar eclipse
visible in the US in April of 2024. It just so happens that the two eclipse(s)
cross paths directly over the New Madrid fault.

You have a degree in rocks. Will there be any tectonic activity because of that?
An 8.something shaker along the New Madrid fault would make a mess. There are
no nearby mountain ranges to attenuate the shaking. It would (will) be pretty
catastrophic.

Re: [MBZ] Road likes GLS450

2017-08-21 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
This guy is probably too young to know of the diesel 124 wagons, THOSE were
a segment buster with their 3400 lbs towing capacity, SLS rear suspension,
and all the safety features of the day (Air bag, ABS, etc). If his logic
is correct, MB really missed out on owning a segment buster. If they'd
kept the diesel option, added 4-matic, and included a towing package in the
US...

The base model GLS does 0-60 in 14ish seconds, I can STILL beat that with
my 124 wagon, and get far better fuel consumption. Can't tow 7500 lbs
though.

Re: [MBZ] OT In the path of the eclipse

2017-08-21 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I considered the sailboat option, but I'm quite sure the local waters will also
be covered with power boaters. We've talked to a few people, and watched our
neighborhood boat storage empty out last night.

It's already a mess, I awoke to emergency vehicle sirens from the major
thoroughfare, highway 17, which is just about two miles away.

I cannot in good conscience send them out to fend for themselves, my prayer is
that if that "I told you so" moment comes, it is merely inconvenience.
