Re: [MBZ] 49 Battery

2018-01-08 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes

As one data point, my tractor has a 2006 CarQuest AGM battery that still starts
the (4-cylinder Diesel) engine despite long dormant periods and being heavily
discharged (and recharged) several times. I have heard that some newer
batteries are inferior, but that's hearsay.

Less regulations, lower build cost, higher sell price, and the buyers want them.

I don't know. Lots of people say good things about them. But if
it is twice the price, I should get twice the life. I'm not sure
it adds up.

Well - put in a new one and see if it's fixed? *smiles*

The battery and the starter are a system. Either one can cause
very similar symptoms.

A failing starter will draw more current. So a DC ammeter that
can read more than 500 A can be used. My note, which are not as
clear as I would like, suggest that the starter for my OM616 with
a good battery and warm weather would draw about 250 A. Not clear
is if this was a bench test...

If the battery is good, turn on the interior light and watch it
when cranking. It should dim, but not go out - or nearly out.

A weak battery or a failing starter will cause the light to go
out, or practically go out.

A bad cable or connection will cause the light to dim very little.

Or a volt meter, measuring the voltage drop along the
battery-starter cable. This is most effective if you have a
known-good reading to compare. I'm not finding my notes on what I
found to be "normal"...

AGM is functionally a drop-in replacement for flooded cell battery
in a car. Charge voltage is close enough it seems to work out
just fine.

Are they better than flooded cell? They cost more, so AGM must be
better - right?

> My Interstate whosesaler is out of the 49 now

What about a group 93?

I built a chart of showing the DIN and EN numbers as well as the
BCI. I have failed to figure out why there are two DIN numbers...

NOTE 1: all of these batteries are 175 mm wide, so I did not
list that dimension.

NOTE 2: The batteries with a "b4" holddown may be a problem
for 123 cars. I don't know the clamping range of the
factory clips.

NOTE 3: This chart is in the same order as the last listing -
descending volume as calculated from the maximum
exterior dimensions. With all else equal, greater
volume should equal greater capacity - unless the
calculated volume does not compare to the internal
volume.

That being said, if the hydraulics are shot I would immediately knock $1000
off the price, if not more. The work is medium level DIY stuff, but the
labor is a killer if you pay someone to do it. If the seller has talked to
a shop about the work he’s gotten a BIG dose of reality, as I would expect
that parts and flat rate time for the whole job is well past $2,000,
probably closer to $3,000.

Klaus of Top Hydraulics is THE MAN when it comes to rebuilt components and
repairs. I used him for a complete cylinder rebuild on my R129 and he
kicked some serious *ss on it AND he will talk to you over the phone and/or
email if you have questions or problems.

Here is the page for the W124 convertible stuff:

https://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/en/22-w124-e-300-ce-e-320-e-220-cabriolet

So it looks like about $1200 for a total system replacement, however, it’s
unlikely your pump and valves need replacement. Cylinders are $450, which
isn’t bad at all. Again, it’s not a fun job and will take you easily 12-16
hours to do a complete R&R, but there’s nothing that isn’t beyond basic
mechanical work in the process.

[MBZ] Costco Double Attaboy

2018-01-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I spotted this item at Costco last week:

https://www.amazon.com/ProSensor-Professional-Finder-Built-Bubble/dp/B0195K8OT4/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1515459155&sr=1-3&keywords=prosensor+710%2B+professional+stud+finder

and coincidentally I helped my son on Saturday to install some Ethernet wall
plates to go through a couple of walls, needing a stud finder to find the right
location to cut through. I got the picture that he could really use a
studfinder, and I lusted after the really nice one at Costco, for about HALF of
the Amazon price ($29.99 vs. $54.95)!

So as I was looking for a parking spot in the Costco lot, a guy in a Costco
jacket was running after me. I rolled my window down, and he told me to drive
over to the tire area so he could air up my low tire he had spotted. When I
did, I saw a nail head in the center of the tread. He said it would take a
while to repair, and they would call my cell when it was ready.

I went into the store, found my stud finder, then browsed their books. I found
a copy of a Mitch Rapp novel I have on my Kindle that I had been planning to
read. I found a nice leather recliner and got a good start on the book before
they called.

So, attaboy for taking the trouble to chase me down, attaboy for having a nice
product at a much lower price than Amazon.

Greg

I use an AGM in my Prius, but I would never use one in my diesel cars since the
AGMs are more easily damaged. For example, if you leave something on and run

Food sources are too plentiful here, I suspect. I see them all year long.

Similar to the story of my friend, Greg,  from years back, which I may
have related previously. He and his brother,. Bruce, went hunting in the
interlake region north of Winnipeg. In order to ensure an early start,
they drove up the night before and slept in the bucket seats of the
truck beside a hydro access road. Come morning, Bruce quickly announced
that Greg could build a fire and work on breakfast while he scouted
around a bit. Greg was not all that amused, but since Bruce took off, he
built a fire and got some coffee brewing. A few minutes later, a moose
walked onto the road about 50 yards away. Greg got his gun and dropped
the moose. Bruce came back a bit later and commented that he had heard a
gun shot and asked if that was Greg shooting. Greg pointed behind the
truck to the moose lying on the road. They were able to back the truck
right up to it and load the quarters on to the truck. Much better than
carrying it out of the bush.
The rest of the story is that they took it to Greg's house and hung it
in the basement. His wife was off a the ballet with Bruce's wife. When
she got home, she walked in and asked "what is that smell?". Greg took
her to the basement to show off his prize. It got moved to a cold
storage facility that afternoon. I do not blame her. I had called him
that day and asked to borrow a big electric drill that I knew he had. He
was agreeable and when I went to pick it up, he showed me the moose. It
did have quite an odor.

It probably sounds stupid, but I've had very good luck with used batteries I've
gotten from my Interstate wholesale house. $49.95 + $15 core. I'd pick one up
and use that until they get more new group 49 batteries in stock. Make sure
your alternator, etc is up to snuff.

I have one of these (or one like it) in the airplane:
https://www.banggood.com/DC-0-100V-Blue-LED-Digital-Mini-Voltmeter-Gauge-Voltage-Panel-Meter-p-950009.html?rmmds=search&cur_warehouse=CN
I find it more useful than the ammeter for telling me that the charging
system is working, and how effective it is. I'll probably add one to the
Ford soon, since it's out of warranty, and my wife doesn't care how I hack
it up. I also find it easier to read the big digital numbers at a glance
than trying to see if a needle is on the right or left side of a line with
a small number on it. This could also be because both the analog ammeter
and the digital voltmeter are on the far right side of the instrument
panel. So no, I'm not monitoring battery state - cranking the starter tells
me that, I'm monitoring the charging system.

They smell the decay scents and find whatever is emitting it, so it

Is that year 'round? Or are there more of them in the winter?
I'm asking because most of the turkey vultures around here depart
for the winter. A sure sign of spring is their return.

And speaking of raptors, a couple days ago I saw an american
kestrel kiting near the road, and a few minutes later a bald eagle
flew over.

When it's been off for a few hours is the only time you can use the voltage to
predict state of charge.

At the Honda dealer in the 1980s, I had a Yuasa battery meter, which was just a
digital voltmeter with a state of charge chart printed on the back.
The neatest feature was that the ground electrode was like a pencil point
projecting from the bottom of the meter, so you'd hold the meter against the
battery terminal with one hand while holding the hot wire against the positive
terminal with the other hand.
Anyway, the chart was linear, with 12.0v at 0%, 12.6v at 100%, and 12.3v at 50%
state of charge. New batteries generally read about 12.76v after you filled
them and charged them overnight.

My opinion? Not very. Best I can tell in reading the copy is it
is a digital volt meter. I'm not fond of digital gauges because I
don't scan them as easily.

The percent-of-full is not going to be very useful since it seems
to be simply a voltage report. And so if the blower fan, and
headlights, and wipers are on it will be showing less than 100%
even when all is well.

It could be useful to check the battery voltage when the car is
off...

I think that a diesel 1/2 ton was in the plans long ago but got delayed
due to the economy etc. When the US economy went into the dumpster a few
years back, the car companies dropped plans for a bunch of stuff.

Many of us on this list like the old diesels for good reason.
Unfortunately, newer diesels seem to cost an arm and a leg to maintain.
The bigger diesels in the F250 and F350 are expensive to maintain and
very expensive to repair when things go bad. It would be nice to have
the torque and fuel economy that this new F150 offers but I think I
would want to wait a bit to see if they are a good motor.
I think that the Dodge 1/2 ton with the diesel tends to be offered only
in the very expensive top of the line models. That may be just an early
on thing where the company and the dealers are taking advantage of the
demand but I suspect the same will happen with the Ford.

Re: [MBZ] E320 winter beater?

2018-01-08 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Yesterday I put the transmission oil in the car, started it, and checked
for leaks. Nothing that I could see. I put the car in gear, and it was
UN-happy. The stability control system doesn't like free-wheeling, and got
angry and started hitting brakes, etc. trying to keep all four wheels
rolling together. It seemed to have at least a bit of power when I had it
fight the brakes, so we lowered the car and went for a test drive. It
worked great, at least at first. We went up the icy hill to start, and the
traction control system was doing its thing. We went down and the ABS
worked when I tested it. Off we went down the main road, and it was clear
that the transmission was not shifting, so it was probably stuck in the 2&R
limp-home mode. That's OK, we probably just need to clear the codes, but
when we turned around to go back, slightly uphill, it decoupled, and the
whine was back. If I restarted the car I could get it to go for a little
bit before it got upset and decoupled again, and we'd roll to a stop. We
were able to limp nearly home before even that stopped working, so Daniel
and I just got the truck and the tow strap and dragged it the rest of the
way. This is extremely disheartening!

If I understand correctly, this is exactly what it was doing for the

...Later in the evening I did the adaptive transmission reset (key on,
floored for 5 seconds, key off and wait quietly until the dash lights all
go out, about 2 minutes) and was able to start the car and move it into its
proper place. It was still whining, though. Not Good.

Does anybody have access to manuals for big Mercedes engines? The
Pisten Bully has an OM352 LA straight 6. Last night it occurred to me
to ask if anybody had ever set the valves, in nearly 800 hours of run
time it would appear the answer is no...
The Wikipedia article gives specs which suggests they ought to be
adjusted. At the next service we plan to give it a try...

The SEE that the USGovt bought is an OM352-equpped Unimog. Its manuals
should be readily available to the public.

Yeah, I think this came up when I had the 300D. Good gas cap, leaky valve
cover filler cap. I recall ordering the seal from the dealer, it was just a
couple of bucks.

Dan, the peach parts thread I was thinking of agrees with you - the blue
gas cap seal is a viable replacement.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/374871-why-oil-caps-always-seem-leak.html

If the replacement seal doesn't fix it, the thread above and this thread
with pix explain why:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/2544089-steel-oil-cap-dissection.html

Another rubber seal inside the cap is probably rock hard and no longer
sealing.

Solution: get a new oil cap, probably only plastic caps are available.

The seal was a service part as well.

I always check Abebooks.com first unless the book is on a bestseller list, and
nearly always get the best prices there. For example, Hillbilly Elegy is $9.00
and up on Abebooks today:
