On Reserve = the same as any reserve price auction, except the buyer and seller
can exchange counter offers after the non-sale.
One time I was the winning bidder at $1500, seller countered $1800, I countered
$1500, then next thing I knew it was relisted for next week. The next week
somebody else (probably the same dealer who bid $1450 to my $1500 the week
before) had the winning bid, reserve not met, at $1450 and it was sold. No idea
if it sold for $1450, $1800, or something in between. Made me wish I'd kept
bidding $1500 until the seller gave up and let me have it.

On Approval = no matter how high the winning bid is, there's no sale unless the
seller accepts the winning bid, or the buyer and seller come to some agreement
after the seller rejects the winning bid.

[MBZ] If it refuses to turn on the seat heaters...

2018-02-14 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
...turn around and go home, there isn't enough voltage to run them (or the car
for very much longer).

The ML350 went about 20 miles, then put the traction control light on, then it
put on some more warning lights including the brake failure light, then it
slowed to 40 mph, then a half mile later slowed to 20mph, and when I shifted
into park it shut the engine off. I had to jump it to get it to shift back out
of park to go on the tow truck.

And no, I never saw a charging system warning light or message. I don't even
know if it shows warning messages on the odometer display like the S210 does.

Mitch.

I suspect that the survivors are in much better condition than the ones that
rusted out, got Cash/klunked, or abused over the past 40 years. They are also
very affordable to own and operate, as well as having a following in the old
countries, so parts are available. That it shares some parts with the R107
does not hurt. The size is a boon. The W116 is really large, while the /8 can
be handled better than that or the R107.

I enjoyed working on my /8, and it does have the classic Sacco and Braq lines.
Why do you still hold on to your car Randy?

Well I put in a prebid at $125 and was outbid this morning before the auction
started. I upped by bid to $225 and was the winner before the auction started.
I ended up high bidder so it does not seem like anybody bid on it at the live
auction. It’s somewhat interesting to me as it is supposed low miles and might
clean up nice, but not sure what I could flip it for.

Re: [MBZ] My ‘71 220

2018-02-14 Thread Dimitri via Mercedes
Bought new by my parents in 1971 at Helms Brothers dealership in NY. They
picked it up in Germany via European delivery and drove it to Greece where they
were living. The car is a US spec model- probably the only 220/8 in Greece with
US specs. Ironically, it’s never been in the US but has been driven throughout
Europe. We keep it in Greece for when we visit. The car was driven on a daily
basis by my father from 1971-1986. In 1986 it received a complete repaint with
the exception of the roof. The car is and always has been completely rust free
and has 128,000 original miles. It is in pristine condition- not a show car but
a very high quality driver. I was last in Greece in 2008 for 3 months. I worked
on the cosmetics of that car almost every day- mostly detailing. It has
remained under cover in a dry garage ever since.

Can't say for sure, but that is the symptom of brakes that
were not properly "bedded".

Solution is to turn the rotors or replace them. While the S123
rotors can be turn, replacement isn't usually very expensive and
is what Mercedes specifies.

Common knowledge of Benz rotors is that they do not turn. Get fresh rotors and
have the brake system checked out. The rotor is not supposed to warp, so there
is some other cause of the issue.

cars sold for very good prices in recent times.

None have been perfect show cars.

1. Are they just getting old enough to have become somewhat rare?

2. Do they appeal to older wealthy folks who can afford another toy?

3. Should I shine mine up and get out while the going is good, so to speak?

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

He offered it and I’ll take it. Whether or not I’ll put it on the car
is yet to be determined. Understand that there are parts of the year
down here where we’re inundated with “love bugs” that literally cover
the front of your car to the point where their remains can damage the
paint if left in place for a while. I would probably use it at that
time as a protective measure, but otherwise leave it off.

"This species' reputation as a public nuisance is due not to any bite
or sting (it is incapable of either), but to its slightly acidic body
chemistry. Because airborne lovebugs can exist in enormous numbers
near highways, they die in large numbers on automobile windshields,
hoods, and radiator grills when the vehicles travel at high speeds. If
left for more than an hour or two, the remains become extremely
difficult to remove. Their body chemistry has a nearly neutral 6.5 pH
but may become acidic at 4.25 pH if left on the car for a day. In the
past, the acidity of the dead adult body, especially the female's egg
masses, often resulted in pits and etches in automotive paint and
chrome if not quickly removed. However, advances in automotive paints
and protective coatings have reduced this threat significantly. Now
the greatest concern is excessive clogging of vehicle radiator air
passages by the bodies of the adults, with a reduction of the cooling
effect on engines, and the obstruction of windshields when the remains
of the adults and egg masses are smeared on the glass.

Lovebug adults are attracted to light-colored surfaces, especially if
they are freshly painted, but adults congregate almost anywhere,
apparently reacting to the effects of sunlight on automobile fumes,
asphalt, and other products affected by environmental factors still
not completely understood."

Re: [MBZ] OK, How do I get the instrument cluster out?

2018-02-14 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Or one can easily make a nice set of hooks from a coat hanger: Cut piece of
coat hanger 6" to 8" long. Bend 1/8" on one end 90° to main axis. Make
loop on other end for gripping with finger(s). With hook aligned to slip
into slot between cluster "case" and dashboard about 1" to 2" above outsider
corners of cluster, push hook ¾" or so into slot; rotate hook 90° and pull
it to engage outer case of cluster. This always worked easily and nicely on
my 123's and 126, but I had to free the cluster on my 124 the first time by
driving putty knife into the slot around the case because of mfgr's glue
overflow onto the rubber around the case/cluster.

Craig,

Just got my official MB pulling hooks out of the tool chest. Here’s what
I can tell you:

Part number: 140 589 02 33 00
Length of wire: approximately 6” from handle to hook
Hook length: 3/16”
Wire diameter: ~ 2 mm

There is a black line approximately 2-1/2” up from the end with the hook.
I suspect that’s a reference point for how far you’re supposed to stick
them into the dash before rotating to engage the cluster. I’ll check
today as I’m planning on pulling the cluster on the 400E.

- How long is the bent portion?

- What is the part number?

That’s probably the biggest hindrance to getting them out - the rubber seal
ages and pretty much anchors the thing in there. The hooks won’t do it in this
case, you need brute force.

On one older instrument cluster, I had to run a thin steel putty knife
around to break the "seal" between the rubber and the dash - then I could
push it out from the back.

[MBZ] Wonderful Wednesday!

2018-02-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Updated the blog:

http://penoff.com/Penoff.com/400E_Blog/400E_Blog.html

Parts pick up for a bunch of the stuff I needed, I slathered Leatherique over
the seats as we’re having a nice sunny day that will bake the crap out of the
interior, and painted the instrument needles.

Rest of the day is caught up with appointments, HOA board meeting, Valentine’s
Day stuff, so I don’t expect to get anything else done.

Re: [MBZ] 240D

2018-02-14 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I don't know about high inflation pressure, but I would certainly go out
and drive it a bunch more before I gave up on the tires. I almost wonder
if lower pressure would permit more flex as I assume these are radial
tires. I would not go below minimum pressure but I wonder if maximum
would help any.

I sold a boat on a tandem axle trailer to a fellow a few years ago. The
trailer had new tires and wheels that I had put on it, but had sat for a
couple of years without moving.
The buyer took off on a 200 mile trip pulling this 22 foot fibreglass
inboard outboard late at night and later told me he wondered how he was
going to do it as the trailer acted like it had square tires.

After about 25 miles, it smoothed out and was fine.

the last 5+ years. Probably closer to 10 years. Who knows. Anyway, tires
look good, still have the nipples on them. However when you get it up to
about 50 it feels like its driving on square tires and feels like the car
will fly apart. I thought about trying to balance them being that I am
cheap, but I guess I will go ahead and install the new set of tires I
bought for the other 240D. I also smelled something burning like brake
fluid maybe even though the brakes appear to work fine. From looking under
the car looks like one of the calipers might be leaking. Guess I will need
to swap that out. I got a belt that seems to start squeeling at times so I
will replace the 2 belts on it. I will see what flaps has since I wont
have time to wait for an order to come in.

Re: [MBZ] It's Arrived!

2018-02-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
He offered it and I’ll take it. Whether or not I’ll put it on the car is yet
to be determined. Understand that there are parts of the year down here where
we’re inundated with “love bugs” that literally cover the front of your car to
the point where their remains can damage the paint if left in place for a
while. I would probably use it at that time as a protective measure, but
otherwise leave it off.

"This species' reputation as a public nuisance is due not to any bite or sting
(it is incapable of either), but to its slightly acidic body chemistry. Because
airborne lovebugs can exist in enormous numbers near highways, they die in
large numbers on automobile windshields, hoods, and radiator grills when the
vehicles travel at high speeds. If left for more than an hour or two, the
remains become extremely difficult to remove. Their body chemistry has a nearly
neutral 6.5 pH but may become acidic at 4.25 pH if left on the car for a day.
In the past, the acidity of the dead adult body, especially the female's egg
masses, often resulted in pits and etches in automotive paint and chrome if not
quickly removed. However, advances in automotive paints and protective coatings
have reduced this threat significantly. Now the greatest concern is excessive
clogging of vehicle radiator air passages by the bodies of the adults, with a
reduction of the cooling effect on engines, and the obstruction of windshields
when the remains of the adults and egg masses are smeared on the glass.

Lovebug adults are attracted to light-colored surfaces, especially if they are
freshly painted, but adults congregate almost anywhere, apparently reacting to
the effects of sunlight on automobile fumes, asphalt, and other products
affected by environmental factors still not completely understood."

I (my family) has a 1971 220 in Greece. My parents bought it new in New York
and picked it up in Germany via European delivery. They drove it to Greece
where they lived at the time. My father used it as a daily driver from
1971-1986. It now only gets occasional use when we visit. It is the same color
as the one on BAT, heile beige with brown mb Tex, auto tranny, manual windows
and a rare power sunroof. It is in pristine condition. Last time I was there I
spent three months detailing it!

Another fix for something that isn’t broken.

If you use a genuine MB monovalve insert, they work just find. In fact,
the climate control works exceptionally well when repaired correctly. That
is, it requires no adjustment at all by the user.

I haven’t touched mine in weeks or months, except for pressing defrost a
few times.

It’s a shame these kits are installed when the effort would be better
spendt on just making it work as designed. The cars have run for 30-40
years with the original design, why change it now?

I would agree for the most part as a purist, however, I see the circulating
pump as a time bomb which, if not fused to prevent potential damage to the rest

I noticed the circulating pump on the 400E has been disconnected. Hmm.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Monovalve final solution - make it vacuum controlled?

2018-02-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
124 vice 123: I'd change it because the 1995 E300 Diesel monovalve is not
rebuild-able (no insert is sold) and is unique to the 1995 E300 model and
is pretty darn pricey from MB ($140 or more? I could be wrong on that).
In addition, the replacement monovalve available from MB has a bad
reputation for failure within weeks or months of installation (cracks in
the plastic body).

Knock on wood, mine is working just fine in my E300. However I'm pretty
sure the monovalve in my 124.193 is failing and though it is more common,
no insert is sold, so rather than roll the dice on an OE part I may take
the opportunity to try out this kit.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Monovalve final solution - make it vacuum controlled?

2018-02-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On the peach parts forum, there's a claim that the 201 models used this
arrangement, so if there are official MB parts support for things like the
vacuum controlled monovalve, that would be huge.

For $100 that looks like a no brainer. These guys are really good, so I’m sure
it is well designed and thought out.

Re: [MBZ] It's Arrived!

2018-02-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I figure I’l have a total of about $2500 into the car when it’s all said and
done, including acquisition and shipping. I just set up a meet with a local
W140/W124 buddy who I’ve given a boatload of spares to, so now he’s returning
the favor and has a bunch of W124 stuff for me, like a rear view mirror, ash
tray, brand new bra for the front of the car and some other goodies. Nice.

Youngest son says the burl steering wheel is in the storage locker, so I need
to go over there and dig it out. That will look nice.

With the car on a Hagerty policy it’s $318/year for full coverage. To have
around as a spare ride is easy for that kind of expense.

Anyone care to get this $100 kit and test it for us?

I wonder how the vacuum controlled valve works (does it also have a rubber
diaphragm inside that will eventually fail).

I would like to buy a car and have it delivered to your house for repair and
Martha treatment! Project is looking good! You should save all this just in
case son or someone else wrecks its later. This car is going to be worth a lot
when you are done than a similar car with similar miles!

Get some duct tape, put a bungee on the hood, and give it to the boy or

Inflate the tires to max sidewall rated pressure, and then drive around for
an hour or two, and I'll bet they revert from squares back to circles.

Re: [MBZ] OK, How do I get the instrument cluster out?

2018-02-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Craig,

Just got my official MB pulling hooks out of the tool chest. Here’s what I can
tell you:

Part number: 140 589 02 33 00
Length of wire: approximately 6” from handle to hook
Hook length: 3/16”
Wire diameter: ~ 2 mm

There is a black line approximately 2-1/2” up from the end with the hook. I
suspect that’s a reference point for how far you’re supposed to stick them into
the dash before rotating to engage the cluster. I’ll check today as I’m
planning on pulling the cluster on the 400E.

Here is a pair on the island of large women:
