Yes, that was my first comment to him. "That's why I do my own work.
I don't trust my life to stealers."followed by: "The stealer
monkey has incentives to cut corners. He has no incentive to look out
for you."

I've changed many baster cylinders, and never had a problem
crossthreading the flare nuts. It only takes a tiny bit of care to be
sure the tubing is aligned. Then the nut screws in without a problem.

Work on my own cars.

Oh, and on point#1, sometimes getting the threads started on brake
lines can be troublesome. Flat rate mechanics are in too big of a hurry...

[MBZ] Broke Brakes!

2018-03-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
SIL took his bowtie car to the stealer Thurs because it had a brake
idiot light on. They changed the master and booster. Claimed the
booster had to be changed because the master cyl leaked. (BILL
BOOSTER!) Got it back, drove around Fri. Sat he got about 60 miles,
and had NO brakes.

Had it towed and dropped at the stealer's front door.Today the
stealer admitted that the shop mnkey crossthreaded the nut on one of the
brake lines into the master. so, they replaced a brake line.

I would be livid.

#1 monkey should be able to thread in a brake line nut without
crossthreading
#2 Monkey should be able to check to be sure it was not leaking after
completion

#3 Shop manager should check for leaks before the car is released

What would y'all do in a case like this?

[MBZ] Brakes!

2018-03-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Did a front caliper on the Jetta today, the pads were still good but the
caliper wouldn't release. I put in a new hose since the old one looked
original. Only took me around an hour which I thought was okay. Interestingly a
15mm wrench which isn't included with the Harbor Freight kit I had in the
garage would be quite handy. I had an adjustable that was good enough. I think
the larger set I keep in my lantern rebuild kit has 15mm.
I used my pressure brake bleeder for the second time. Boy I'm glad I bought

This is a $650 car, so I’m not about to be dumping money into it for anything

Like headlight wipers on the cars that have them, I consider noise

Thank you! A real relief, as I wasn’t looking forward to doing battle with the
electronics in this thing. It’s extremely rare for them to be the culprit, but
I didn’t want to be the “one”, either.

Now to sort the rest of the piddly stuff….

Got the rebuilt ETA in the car this afternoon. Runs like a champ, no
warning lights.

Took it out for a quick drive, as the tires are a little sketchy and
it’s not getting new ones until Wednesday.

OH. MY. G-D.

A W124 with a 4.2 liter V8. I have driven many, many W124s with the
venerable 3.0 liter inline six, but I have never had a W124 that was
like this one. I can’t even imagine what a 500E would be like.

Once I get a new set of skins on the car I’ll take it out and wind it
up good.

Not any worse than a W140 from what I can see. The sides are tight, especially

I’ll let you know after I change engine mounts. That will be a pig of a job,

The latest research I've come across identifies the source of Tinnitus to
be located in the brain, rather than in the ear. The sounds you are hearing
are "electrical discharge" located in the brain cells, according to the
latest investigations.

I didn't do the research... just read the results... your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the awesome feedback. What a learned group! I will definitely
check out the clinic at the U of M.

The only logical explanation I can come up with is that the blood rushing
past some misaligned cilia (hairs) deep In the inner air are making the
hissing sound. This might account for its constancy.

Being in "agrarian societies" all my life, I have yet to find ONE farmer

fed you a sack of excrement?

I have NEVER heard that one before!

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

That was part of it, and little to do with the Wednesday afternoon fun
on the links of lawyers and bankers (my father was a banker, so I have
direct experience in this area.)

Much of DST has to do with agrarian societies, the reasoning being
that longer light into the evenings gives farmers more time to work
the fields. While I can’t address all of this directly, I can tell you
that based on personal experience as a young man, farmers did use DST
to their advantage and it did help. When harvesting or detassling
corn, being able to start later in the day and work later made a
difference as the condensation or morning dew on the crops made it
much harder to harvest or handle the plants. Dairy farmers, however,
don’t like it, because cows are sensitive to time and changing their
milking schedules can cause some serious affects on production. We
heard about this a lot in Wisconsin.

Personally, I would like to see it gone. I know when we were growing
up in Indiana it was PITA because different parts of the state were on
different times….

I propose that all the daylight that has been "saved" by "daylight savings
time" now be released into a Yuuge Photo-voltaic power plant
and converted to use in the electric grid to power Andrews electric car for
free.

After decades of "saving daylight", I'm sure some of the huge warehouse of
stored saved daylight could be converted to warm up the iced highways and
eliminate the need for salt.

Avid (my employer) Media Composer (video editing application) is sensitive to
time, if it finds files written more than 5min in the future it ignores them
and video won't play. In 2006 they changed the date for DST to end. Microsoft
and Apple both had patches but in any given newsroom about half the systems
would be patched so on the appointed day half the systems fell back and half
didn't, hilarity ensued as the patched systems now wouldn't play any media the
new systems wrote...
So yeah I'm in favor of ending DST...

I wonder if something similar to noise-canceling headphones could work to
generate anti-tinnitus sounds. One would have to tune them to individual
circumstances but the question is if the noise would cancel out whatever the
nerves or brain are doing, or if it would just add to the overall sensation of
more noise.

Re: [MBZ] Way OT: Tinnitus

I can't think of a way the headphones could sample the "noise", much less
generate an out-of-phase countering signal.

I wonder if something similar to noise-canceling headphones could work to
generate anti-tinnitus sounds. One would have to tune them to individual
circumstances but the question is if the noise would cancel out whatever the
nerves or brain are doing, or if it would just add to the overall sensation of
more noise.

The feds meddled in the 70s. Jimmay cahtah's "energy saving" program
probably. AZ and HI opted out, but everyone else had to begin and end
stupid time on the same day. Fed meddling still exists.

Max, in the beginning it was not about "energy savings" It was about
more afternoon time on Wed afternoon when the docs, shysters and bankers
closed early to go "hunt golf eggs in a pasture." (Granny Clampett)

Here is what I think about every 6 months -- how can something so
universally-hated persist? At some point in the past I suppose
there was some semi-compelling reason to do it but there does not
appear to be any such reason now. The strongest one has something to
do with kids going to school, but that seems pretty lame. It appears
there is no energy savings to speak of, maybe even more is being used.

I spent my first 20some years in Indiana where the clocks did not
change, but everyone else did. So in the summer we were in Central
Daylight Time zone, an hour behind the east coast, but in the winter
we were Eastern Standard Time zone, an hour ahead of Central
Standard. The only real issue was TV shows were on an hour earlier in
the summer. I think a coupla counties near Louisville and Chicago did
whatever those cities did, so they changed their clocks mostly so
people who worked there were not constantly in some weird situation.
It mattered not to us as the clocks and the sun just kept doing their
things and there was a smooth transition among the seasons.

So it seems the states control whether clocks change, I don't think
the federal gubmint has anything to do with it. Next time I find
myself amongst any of our elected fools at the state level I need to
ax this question.

We are in a rare solar event this weekend. The rain will return soon,
so I am scrambling to pack lots of little tasks while I can.

Allen seems to not have parking brakes. I thought they were there, but
the pedal goes to the floor and the wheels roll with no resistance, so
I tried to adjust the shoes. No impact spinning the star. Up on
driver/down for passenger. Maybe it will visit a shop instead of
spending many hours trying to make the ($**!!*%#%) wee spring to
actually hook up.

That led to hooking the working antenna cable to the head unit.
Current wire was snipped off to splice into an chinese aftermarket
antenna. Had to pull up carpet, a seat, and dig into the console. May
as well hook the speakers directly to the radio instead of trying to
make the fader work right. Noise was only coming out the driver rear
speaker with this unit. Now I can control media from a touch screen,
plucked from PnP for $10, over installing one of the vintage Grand
Prix that would fetch multiples of that investment flogged on Fleabay.
I am not trying to make this a show car.

While wrestling the driver seat, the power wires to the motors had to
be reseated, as they fell out somehow. The MBTex seat I installed,
came minus the back, so, I needed to make holes to fit the OE panel.
That done, I had to liberate the seatbelt dock, as it had become
high-centered on a bolt and would not allow the seat to be re-installed.

I popped the trunk and tested the vacuum pump. No vac holding, and
pump would not power. Will need to trace where I have a hole, so will
not hook the replacement pump to power. Which somehow flowed to under
the hood looking at the EGR. That holds vacuum, but will not open. I
pulled out and gave it a cleaning. Valve opened by digital
manipulation, but not vacuum. Stuff It! Put it back, at least it is
clean now.

A side trip to the hardware store to secure some Schedule 40 to build
a few stands so I can refinish the Bundt wheels I pulled from PnP.
Many $$$ later I had a square base with a set of posts along the
middle side arms rising to an apex to hold the rims by the centers of
the teepee. A fast wipe do
