Old Bill (Lear Jet) Lear spent much of his fortune and reputation trying to
develop practical modern steam cars. Water consumption is the limiting factor.
Lear tried to condense and recover the used steam, very problematic. Back in
the 19th century, when trains replaced pony express, pony express stations
(about every 10 miles) were converted to watering stations. They could carry
much fuel but needed to take on lots of water.

Stanley Steamers were very fast -- cylinder directly coupled to the axle in
some cases, and big wheels.

One of the Stanley brothers was killed racing one on the sea shore, went out of
control at well over 100 mph (on wooden wheels, no less) and crashed.

Pretty sharp for the day, but getting them going (and preventing the boiler
from freezing in the winter) was a pain.

I do.

I was a voracious reader as young boy, and pretty much vacuumed up anything

Re: [MBZ] OT best new washer dryer

2018-05-07 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
As another poster mentioned, I have had good luck with a Whirlpool Duet washer.
There were several models to choose from, and I went with the German made one
that had a more robust bearing setup. It failed with an error message once, and
the error message actually pointed to a defective switch. I bought the switch
from an online appliance parts purveyor for cheap, completed the repair in
about 10 minutes. Very satisfied.

The Duet replaced a Neptune that SWMBO demanded (based on that her friend had
one) and did not end well. The Neptune dryer still is fine after 20 years.

I did research Consumer Reports (available online through the public library)
which I consider a decent resource for this type of product. YMMV.

Yes.

They’re called upon to make things cheap because there are people in the market
who will always buy the least expensive item no matter what the quality. If
that wasn’t the case, there’s no justification for their business model.

It’s easy for them to cut corners in some areas, such as rubber parts, and
still sell them at a profit. Granted, if it’s a dealer part you’ve got a lot
of overhead coupled with that part that won’t go away. Many of those costs
don’t exist for third party suppliers, but if they can cut corners elsewhere,
such as in labor or material costs, they’ll do it and take the profits it
provides.

"they could care less so long as they can sell the junk?” And make a profit at
it.

Re: [MBZ] OT best new washer dryer

2018-05-07 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
We had a Westinghouse full size stacking front load washer and dryer new
when my wife and I were married in 1973.
It was a good unit. Caused us very little trouble. Unfortunately, I
listened to someone that I should have been more fortunate to avoid.
(How is that for an odd statement?) Essentially what happened was that
along about 1984 one of the units (dryer maybe) needed some part and I
went to a local supplier looking for the piece. I got the part but was
told that they were obsolete and that parts were very difficult to get.
Then the washer acted up, and since we had a new baby in the house, my
wife  decided we were getting a new washer and dryer. I took the washer
apart and found out that it was just full of cobwebs and dust. Cleaned
it with the vacuum cleaner and it ran fine. I sold the stacking setup to
the manager at my bank for her daughter and I understand they had years
of good service from it.  I later learned that there was no problem
getting parts and that the fool who told me there was did not know what
he was talking about. He did not work for a place that sold machines so
he was not trying to sell me a new one. I think he just did not know.

that would develop from the water than was never cleared out of the
sump.  And no, it wasn’t a washing machine that was covered under the
big recall that took place, either.  The Maytag dryer was a piece of
crap from the get-go.

The LG washer is great, and handles as much as the front loader did
but much better as far as speed and efficiency.  The Samsung dryer
does well, too, but it’s about 3-4 years old and making “rumbling”
noises.  I just put a set of rollers in it to discover that they’re
not the problem.  That leaves the idler pulley.  Grr.  But it still
does a great job drying clothes.

And they both play tunes when they’re finished - something none of my
previous appliances did.

It's the vintage as much as or more than the size.

Especially if by 'older Jetta', you mean 1980s-1990s.
There's a reason why small cars weigh 3000+lb now (unless they're Civics), they
are much stiffer and stronger than they used to be.
(don't ask me how Honda can still sell a Civic that weighs less than 2500lb)

If the fuel never goes through the intake valves, then fuel additives do
nothing to clean the EGR soot and PCV goo off the intake valves.

[MBZ] no substitute for size

2018-05-07 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Long story but a recent car accident here in the news happened between a
F150 - probably 2006 or so judging by the photo in the paper - and an
older VW Jetta. Woman in the Jetta made a u-turn on a 4 lane street with
a median and got clobbered by the truck. She misjudged his speed and I
hear that he was doing about double the speed limit so maybe easy for
her to do so.

In any event, the truck apparently suffered no damage that intruded into
the passenger compartment. The car did not fare so well. Back bumper is
now touching the back of the driver's seat. She got hurt but survived.
He was not injured so far as I know. Good thing there was no-one in the
back seat.

Bigger is better for the most part when vehicles tangle.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Pressure Washer Surface Cleaners

2018-05-07 Thread MG via Mercedes
Yep. I got one of those round scrubbers a few years ago. Love the
way it works. Much quicker on large flat surfaces then either the
regular nozzles or those turbo things that pulse in a small
circle. That does work better though on engines as it seems to
hit at a few different angles as you go.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

Anyone own something like this?

I borrowed one from a buddy to clean my driveway and sidewalks, a semi-annual
exercise in Florida, and was amazed at how quick and easy it made the job
compared to just using a fan nozzle.

Looks like most of the consumer grade models are clustered around the $50-$75
range. Just wondered if anyone owned one of these and what their opinion was
of it.

Thanks!
