I did not think our '95 E320 (with an M104) was underpowered, but then I
had been driving a 1982 240D/3.0 for several years.

Well in Albuquerque itself, they are not needed. If you drive up in the
nearby mountains, however, they can sometimes be useful.

I found a local one in town:

https://albuquerque.craigslist.org/ctd/d/2004-ford-explorer-xls/6699949568.html
http://14215.bestusedcarmarket.com/p/35610531/2/20593171
2004 Ford Explorer XLS
210,212 miles

I went and looked at it. It drives very nicely, though a bit stiff
compared to the BRV. When they got it, the windshield was cracked,
so they replaced the windshield.

It says "Mechanic's special!!" and that is because:

- Upper and lower oil pan leaks
- Power steering hose leaks
- Front passenger CV boot damaged
- Rear passenger axle leaks
- Fuel rail pressure sensor needs to be replaced
(at least that's what the P193 code they read said)
- Needs motor mounts
- Needs ball joints and tie rods
- Radio works but CD player does not

I noticed it had a 1.5" receiver, not the 2" I'm used to, and asked what
the towing capacity is. The salesman looked it up on the Internet and
called me to say it was 56xx pounds. I looked it up and found
http://trailers.com/tow-capacity/2004_Ford_Explorer_4WD_AWD_5363.html .
which says it's 7000 pounds. On page 9 of
http://www.fleet.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/2004_All.pdf
it says, "Can be equipped to tow trailers up to 7,140 lbs."

That said, I looked on albuquerque.craigslist.org. The model names of the
various manufacturers is confusing, though the PDF linked above shows the
various model names and ratings for each of the Ford SUVs. I need to find
something similar for Chevy.

Re: [MBZ] Florence's future path a big problem for forecasters

2018-09-19 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
One of the units seemed to have a memory problem so it wasn’t recording more
than 10 data readings. My buddy switched it out with an extra unit that was
missing some bits after making it whole and that one was ok. I’ll have to look
at it, it had seemed to be working before we put it out.

We pulled data off them Monday morning and got a full set but since we didn’t
get any rain to speak of we didn’t get what we were hoping related to the
hurricane. But it will be good baseline data for when we do get some rain. I
haven’t looked at it yet but my buddy did a quick look and thought he could see
some differences between the 2 watersheds just based on normal tidal flow, so
that might be interesting.

Yesterday he took a class on a field trip around the Island, none of the little
snowflakes had an interest in going through the marshgrass to the creek to get
to one of the sondes, see what an actual field experiment involved, and none of
them evidenced any interest in helping analyze the data or to participate in
further field work. He was very disappointed but resigned to what he has to
deal with. Sigh. I would have been all over that in college.

I programmed the units to run for another week then we’ll clean them and
actually calibrate them, and put them out again. Fun stuff.

Damn it. I forgot you were selling your car.

Re: [MBZ] OT - rat trapping

2018-09-19 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
When I lived in the Champlain Islands pretty close to the lake, we had a rat
come into the house one spring when the water was high. He was wild and bold
and had little fear of humans. We kept the dog food sack in the side door
vestibule above the concrete steps to the basement, and one day I heard a
crunching from there. Opening the door, I saw the rat look up mid-crunch for a
moment. I said "'Be right back", then retrieved my .22 S&W J-frame and a CB-cap
round I had on hand. A .45 would not have been a good idea with the concrete as
a backstop!

When I arrived at Tyndall AFB in Florida, I rented a mobile home
off-base. One evening I cleaned my father's 1911 and was putting
it back together when a rat came out from underneath the kitchen
sink counter. I was very tempted to put the magazine back in and
blast the critter.

Later, when I was talking with my landlord, I told him about the
episode. He said, with some excitement, "You should have shot it!
I have been trying to get that thing for a while now!"

I was still hesitant and was not sure I would that if it appeared
again.

Any chance you can provide names to go with the faces? Towards the end

relationships based upon couples appearing together in several photos
but again a lot of it is guessing.  For those of us who have never made

Ok sports fans. A rat is somehow raiding our kitchen at night. I think he
came in through an open door. So far, my TomCat black plastic traps baited
with peanut butter have not tempted him at all. He has eaten the hell out
of a small jack o lantern, some bread, and gnawed through a nylon lunch

And makes a hell of a mess. I thought he might even be a squirrel at first.

Anyway, I washed the traps off and will try some apple and some bread for
bait, and even bait some glue traps, but after that my next move is a jack
russell.

Any advice on trapping techniques? My little black traps are pretty deadly
with the little bait cup down in a hole in the trigger, but so far my
peanut butter standby isnt working out, which seems sort of unbelievable.

Maybe I will have to go with the cage type and put some serious bait
quantity in there to lure him in.

Consensus on bait alternatives? Traps?

Thanks.

I had a coupla marsh rats in the house last winter, put out some spring traps
which did not work. Got some of those plastic snap traps from Lowe’s with the
bait inside, they worked great, got them quickly. I don’t recall the brand,
might be the same things you have. The springs are strong. I used peanut

Shawn Woods is the expert to which I turn for all things rodent traps:

I'd go for a 2 prong approach, trap and also put out some pads with peppermint
oil as a deterrent. Shawn did a test and found the peppermint oil seemed to
really work.

Consensus on bait alternatives? Traps?

SOUTH CAROLINAGullah enclave has long history of enduring
hurricanesPublished:

Thursday, September 13, 2018

As a potentially catastrophic Hurricane Florence steamed toward the
Carolinas, Josh Dais watched the weather reports on the television in his
barbershop and listened for updates from emergency officials.

But when it comes to deciding whether to flee this island where thousands
of black residents trace their ancestry back to West Africans who once
toiled in nearby fields, the opinions of family elders can carry as much
weight as those of professional meteorologists.

"If Mama won't leave, most folks aren't going to leave," Dais, 29, said
Tuesday, recalling how he rode out Tropical Storm Irma last year and
Hurricane Matthew in 2016 with relatives at his mother's home. "If Mama
and

Grandma are going, then a lot of people are leaving."

Respect for tradition and deep cultural roots have persisted for
generations on St. Helena Island, the largest Gullah community on the
South
Carolina coast. An estimated 5,000 or more people living here are
descended

from slaves who worked rice plantations in the area before they were freed
by the Civil War.

Smaller enclaves of Gullah, referred to as Geechee in some areas, are
scattered along the Southeast's coastline from North Carolina to Florida.
Scholars say separation from the mainland caused the Gullah to retain much
of their African heritage, including a unique dialect and skills such as
cast-net fishing and basket weaving.

Destructive hurricanes haven't been too frequent in St. Helena Island's
past. But the so-called Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893 devastated the area
after rolling ashore in Savannah, Ga., and killed an estimated 2,000
people.

Emory Campbell, a Gullah descendant and scholar, recalled riding as a boy
in a neighbor's old cart on Hilton Head Island as Hurricane Gracie struck
in 1959 and tore the roof off a hotel.

"We saw some remnants of hurricanes here when I was growing up," Campbell
said. "The wind would blow, you'd put some tin up against the window, but
you wouldn't know that much except for the scratchy sounds on the radio
coming out of Savannah."

Hurricane Matthew smashed and toppled trees across surrounding Beaufort
County in 2016 but largely spared the modest ranch houses, bungalows and
mobile homes of St. Helena Island.

John Brown, 54, said he spent two weeks after Matthew cutting up fallen
trees with a chain saw in his job for a municipal public works department.
A giant live oak uprooted by the storm remains intact across the street
from Brown's home.

"If my job didn't require me to stay, I'd be out of here in a heartbeat,"
Brown said after giving fresh water to his four cows Tuesday. "I think
most

of the older ones, they're kind of stubborn. But the younger ones, not so
much."

Bertha Bradley wasn't worrying. She and her husband grew up on St. Helena
Island and own Bradley's Seafood, a small cinderblock shop where they sell
shrimp, flounder and whiting, all caught by their son.

Bradley said she has never favored evacuating ahead of hurricanes, in part
because her great-grandmother never did. Bradley and her husband missed
Gracie in 1959 because they were in Savannah after getting married. One
subsequent storm, she's not sure which one, scared them enough to get them
to leave the island.

But the traffic, she said, was awful.

"I said, 'Why get on the road like this? I'm going to get killed on the
road,'" Bradley said. "I should stay in my house, where I have water and
food. If God's coming for you, you can't run from him." *— Russ Bynum,

That is easy. It proves that you are a solid conservative thinking
person who reads Consumer Reports to ensure that you buy only the best
recommended products.

That way, you can be smug. Only applies to Camry and Accord?

[MBZ] Update on Wilton

2018-09-19 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I just talked with Wilton.

He said he continues to have seepage into his basement, though the sump
pump has dropped the level in the basement from 5" to 1/4 - 1/2".

They are currently out of hot water. He doesn't know if they will be able
to get the burner, which they replaced 2 years ago when the basement
flooded to 12 - 15", dried out and working or whether they will have to
replace it again.

He says their cable TV now works, but he hasn't gotten Internet back yet.
He said they had their power blink a couple of times, which caused him
great anxiety, but the people across the street, who do have Internet,
had power out for a couple of days. I think I'd rather be without
Internet and have power than the reverse.

The NWS shows the Neuse River near Goldsboro in major flood at 27.3'
(flood stage is 18' and major flood stage is 24'). From the current
graph, it looks like the flooding has peaked (it was 27.6'); the forecast
shows only decreasing levels. See
https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=rah&gage=gldn7
and
https://water.weather.gov/ahps/region.php?state=nc&fcst_timeframe=0¤t_color=all¤t_type=all&fcst_type=obs&conus_map=d_map¢er_point_lat=35.7108379635¢er_point_lon=-80.1232909195&default_zoom=7&marker=false

Wilton said the south side of town, a couple of miles away, is most
likely flooded. That is apparently typical with the Neuse river being as
high as it is. They, however, do not have that problem.

It's a symbol of your status as an unthinking member of The Herd, buying the
cars that The Herd says are superior, hence proving that your intelligence is
superior to that of the idjits who foolishly buy their transportation
appliances from the US based manufacturers. The fact that the average GM

is irrelevant.

Craigslist and Autotrader can bring buyers from a distance. BAT obviously bring
an international audience of competitive bidders, but getting on BAT with a
modern car isn't easy unless it's special, like Porsche, Ferrari, AMG...

The owner of my body shop lets customers and friends park cars out front with
