The article on the New York Times linked from this page,

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/23/opinion/sunday/stick-shift-cars.html

is also interesting. Some quotes from the article:

The fact that our brains so easily overdelegate this task to
technology makes me worry about the tech industry’s aspirations
 — the fully autonomous everything. Could technology designed to
save us from our lapses in attention actually make us even less
 attentive?

An investigation revealed that the driver [of the Uber car which
killed a pedestrian in Arizona] was watching Hulu until the moment
of the crash. Because the human brain is impeccable in its ability
to filter out extraneous information, this type of behavior should
have been predicted. During normal driving, our brains are in a
near-constant state of vigilance. But let someone or something do
the driving for us and this vigilance easily fades.

Though a supercomputer will always surpass the human brain in terms
of pure speed, the brain is beyond complex in its ability to
reprioritize salient data inputs from multiple sources. If one input
becomes less relevant, our cognitive systems shift their attention
to the next most relevant one (which these days is usually our mobile
devices).

But there’s one feature available on some cars today that can
increase a driver’s vigilance instead of diminishing it — the
manual transmission.

Though research on the safety of manual transmissions is scant,
one study on the driving performance of teenage boys with A.D.H.D.
revealed that cars with manual transmissions resulted in safer,
more attentive driving than automatics. This suggests that the
cure for our attentional voids might be less technology, not more.

I have had a Moto G5 plus for over a year now. I am very satisfied with it, and
it performs what I need it to do flawlessly. It is NOT loaded up with the
bloatware you will find on offerings from Samsung et.al. It is a little bigger
than I would like, I cannot have it in my shirt pocket and button the pocket. I
think the iPhone SE is a bit smaller, but then you have to contend with the

Apple, Google (Android), Amazon (AWS), Facebook

[MBZ] OT: Network changes will affect your phone ...

2019-04-18 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I have been using Tracfone for a long time with a Nokia 2126 I got from
Mitch.

After much use and being dropped many times, the 2126 gave up the ghost
about a year ago. After talking with service on the phone for an
interminable time, I was able to activate an LG 236, which I also got from
Mitch.

Today I got a text message from Tracfone which said:

From 770-89
Tracfone: Network changes will affect
your phone. Go: yourphoneupgrade.com/tracfone

So, at that page I find I have to get a new phone and the choices I have
are:

LG REBEL™ 3 LTE® (L158VL) RECONDITIONED $ 9.99
ALCATEL MYFLIP™ (A405DL)$ 9.99
Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro (S327VL) RECONDITIONED $ 24.99
ZTE ZFIVE® C LTE (Z558VL) $ 29.99
Alcatel TCL LX (A502DL) $ 29.99
ZTE Blade T2 (Z559DL) $ 29.99
LG Premier Pro LTE (L413DL) $ 39.99
Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro (S727VL) RECONDITIONED$ 39.99
LG Rebel 4 (L212VL) $ 59.99
moto e5 (XT1920DL) $ 69.99
Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit (S367VL)$ 79.99
Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown (S767VL)$ 99.99
iPhone 6s Space Grey 32GB $124.99
Motorola Moto G6 (XT1925DL) $179.99
iPhone 6s Plus Rose Gold 32GB $224.99
Samsung Galaxy S7 (G930VL) $299.99
iPhone 7 Rose Gold 32GB $324.99

Since the LG 236 is a flip-phone, I was drawn to the ALCATEL MYFLIP™
(A405DL). That phone, however, has bad reviews.

To say I am disappointed at this turn of events, having just learned the
LG 236, is an understatement.

My minutes balance of 16,433.11 minutes is valuable and I would rather
not lose it.

Any suggestions what to do?

I don't think they care. If they have 10 listings at $5 a piece, they make more
money than if they have 10k listings for $0. Less server space is used too.

For our purposes, a CL type of service where the buyer pays a fee or
subscription instead of the seller would be a viable business model. Any
computer gurus want a billion dollar idea? There you go. You're welcome.

The '05 will have the inline 6. Ask Wilton how he likes his.

The '09 will have the V-6 (same same Sprinter) . Make sure the oil

replaced with the new type. Mine was replaced around 100K before I
bought it.

My '08 is a Blutec but does't use bluejuice. The '09 will.

Don't know if the '05 has the Comand center or not but the '09 will have

Re: [MBZ] OT Volvo

2019-04-18 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I did end up buying it had bad rear wheel bearings (common problem I
guess, and disclosed by seller). Bought a couple of Timken rear hubs
from RockAuto, and when I opened the box they were in Volvo bags with
part numbers so I guess that's a good sign.

Installation was a bit of a pain. Took some heavy hammering to get the
old hubs out. But saved over $800 from the dealer estimate the seller
provided, though at the cost of a couple of band-aids for the invariable
skinned knuckles.

I would need to get the accumulators installed, I might do that this

It's $55 if you aren't a member, I think a year membership is like $100

Someone has gone before you.

Your bell housing casting is broken because someone has used the “ribs” as a

If you change something in the post -- maybe just change the order of the
pictures -- you can (could) post in different venues. I changed the title
of my posting of our Peterbilt 386 so I could post it in different places.

Zippy and easy to park - The smart fortwo can fit in almost any parking

traffic jams.

 Mercedes-Benz GLA

Sporty and spacious - This small SUV has room for 5 people, plus added
cargo capacity with a handy hatchback.

 Mercedes-Benz CLA

Stylish and fun - There's room for 5 in this 4-door sedan. Cruise around
town in a smooth, comfortable ride - even everyday errands seem a little

The 05 will be much easier to work on, watch out for Black Death. It has the
SBC braking which is covered for 25 years now. The 09 with lower miles would be
nice but the 642 is much more complicated and has the oil cooler leaking issue.

No question, the 2005. Pretty much a bullet-proof drive train, straight 6
vs. V6 in the 2009, which are a lot of trouble. Con: brakes, but there was
a warranty extension on them I think. The price may be too high, have to
look at condition and records, but with so many miles I think that is
high. Kaleb would know better what prices are.
