talking in farsi, borg or Klingon or such as a good touch.

[MBZ] More copart strange

2019-04-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I was watching this item which was up for auction today.  It started out
listed with a buy it now for $1500 with no bids.  In the last couple of
days it started getting bids and this morning was up to $850 and the BIN
was not showing, but it showed minimum bid (reserve).  When the auction
started at noon all the sudden it disappear out of my watch list.  It
shows item sold yet it never even got to auction yet.  So what
happened?   Did they just let whoever was the high bidder at the moment
win it before the live auction?

[MBZ] The mexicans and nigerians are ruining Copart

2019-04-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I was bidding on a 116 300SD today.  Looked like it might have been
rusty, hard to tell.  Interior needs new seats, front and back, which I
have.  I bid up to 450 but kept getting outbid by somebody in Nigeria.
No, it was somebody in UAE.  How the heck do these people on a different
continent get these cars over there? How is it even economically feasible?

We had 2 huge waves of stores/rain come thru, very heavy rain, road out
front is a river.  Just now all the sudden the breaker for the outlets
in the living room the TV is hooked up to along with the ceiling light
have tripped.  I reset it and it tripped again right away.  Reset it
again and it tripped after a few minutes.  WTH?  I don't know if rain
got in somewhere somehow and shorted out something.  We have had several
power flashes today. There is a sump pump on the end of the house but I
really do not think it would be on the same circuit.  It would be closer
to being on the outlets in my office.  I had to plug the power strip
into the next room with an outlet close to the one where it was
originally plugged into.

Randy,

Just an observation on my part….

I totally understand where you’re coming from, but the likelihood that Clay’s
spouse works in an oak paneled office with associates wearing three piece
tailored suits and Italian loafers or Allen Edmonds wingtips is slim, based on
my experience working in Alaska. Even more so as they’re not in a “major
metropolis”, like Anchorage. I’m betting the dress code at her place of
business is far more relaxed. Alaska is a very, very different place than the
Lower 48 or for that matter, any Canadian province (excluding the Yukon,
Northwest Territories and Nunavut, of course.)

And while I’m not one to judge, my wife may or may not approve of my hobbies at
times, but she understands that they’re something I get great pleasure and
enjoyment out of and she accepts that. Granted, I don’t have 2-3 older Mercedes
in need of work or repairs other than my finnie, but if we lived in a place
where I could have such things, I would and she would be accepting of it (as
long as they weren’t parked on the front lawn, of course.) I might even go for
the green and white W126 German police car replica….

I believe I suggested all of this to you before, but I will say it again
as a reminder.

She is a lawyer. She works with people who judge her by the way she
dresses and what she drives, and where she lives, etc.

If you want to collect old Mercedes, then they need to be objects of
beauty. You need to stop creating green police cars and such.

Find a good example of a big Mercedes sedan that can be made to look
like it has real significant value. Black or Silver are likely preferred
colors.

It needs to evoke respect. You do not want to appear to be a bottom
feeder. You need to appear to be the sort of gentleman who has
impeccable taste, and prefers classic vehicles rather than the present
throw away vehicles. Dress the part as well. You need to appear to be
either coming or going to or from the country club or the yacht club.
Tweed jacket, penny loafers etc. If you have never read the book, Dress
for Success, then find a copy and read it. I believe the writer's name
was John Molloy and he did research into the attitudes of people based
upon the way they dressed etc. I believe he wrote subsequent books -
Dress for Success for Women and Live for Success or some such that also
looked at vehicle colors etc. You may not agree with all that he
suggests but I suspect it will go a long way toward sorting out the
issues with your wife if you try to see the situation from her point of
view and work towards a goal of having her appreciate your affection for
classic Mercedes. It will no doubt also improve her level of respect for
you.

She needs you to appear to be dignified and respectable. If she can
share with her friends and co-workers, that her husband collects classic
Mercedes Benz, then that will have value to her. She does not want to
tell folks about your hobby because she is embarrassed by your bottom
feeder cars. You need to move on beyond free junkers unless you are
prepared to quickly invest enough in them to make them appear to be
respectable classic vehicles. That means good paint and upholstery etc.

I am on the board of our little rural water company. We got federal loans to
build new infrastructure (and the original build-out 40+ years ago) because
banks won’t loan money for that although we were later able to refinance those
loans through private banks to get lower interest rates. We still have a fairly
big loan for a new water tank a few years back, the rate is pretty good so we
won’t be dealing with that.

It’s all part of federal (and some state) law how we are able to function. It’s
actually a pretty weird setup.

I have been banned from working on the cheep. She accosted me last night
because I had the hood up with the battery on the charger. Just trying to keep
it functional so #2 boy will be able to find a summer job when he comes back
from university in a week.

Her crazy plan is to sell the cheep and replace it with some pop up camper
thing. That it would fit in her garage. The Cheep has a hard time fitting
now. Removing the unused work out equipment and stack of winter tires will not
fit a Great White North pickem-up vehicle in that tiny space. A chubby
suburban would be nose at the man door and tail keeping the big door from
closing

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cheapest place to install wind power

2019-04-30 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
REA helped Lektrick coops to organize and offered them low interest
loans.   AFIK, all loans from the 1930s were paid back long ago.  I
doubt any were over 50 years.   Is a loan program really a subsidy?   If
the loan is subsidized like FHA, VA etc, then maybe.   I don't  know if
the loans to the REA coops were subsidized or not.  Are federal
guaranteed loans for rural development a subsidy?   IMHO,  not as long
as they are paid back.   To me it only becomes a subsidy when the
borrower defaults.

Curt Raymond wrote on 4/30/19 10:59 AM:
How does REA have any justification when other subsidies don't? If
people want to live out there why is it okay to use other people's
money to give them electricity?

Really what I'm asking is if "no subsidies" is the goal how can there
be some subsidies?

For the record rural electrification was a hugely important step for
our country and is a big part of the reason for our safe and stable
food supply which is a big part of blah blah etc... I'm just curious
as this seems like a "blind spot" subsidy...

I saw that one.  Might not be too badly damaged for cheap.  Hood, fender
bumper might fix it up, though of course those parts are not
particularly cheap.  The top is probably not working so it has gotten
ratty inside.  Fixed up it might be worth $3k if the top is toast, and
no hardtop.

2019-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
 Not a whole lot. /s
To be fair I'm really outside of their normal target demographic which is to
say I'm 20-30 years younger than most of the folks that go to rehab.
So anyway we stretch a little, lift some weights and then spend 15-20 minutes
between treadmill, stationary bike and stepper machine for 30-40 minutes
total. My heart rate range is something like 110-136, I forget the exact numbers
but basically they want me in the low 120s. We wear monitors that are networked
so they can watch my heart rate the whole time.
Once every 2 weeks you're allowed to move up 1# on the weights...
My issue is they don't push you to go faster and they actively slow your weight
increases. This week in the hotel gym I've been doing 10# weights since they
only have 5# and 10# as choices, in rehab I've been doing 7# and would have
moved to 8 this week. I've been interval running with my heart rate around 140.
The first run I got as high as 150 but this week its been easy to stay around
140 while going faster than they let me go in rehab.
Insurance pays for 36 visits (12 weeks) of rehab of which I've only completed
half because I keep getting interrupted by having to go to work. This drives
the rehab crew CRAZY, I'm about the only one that goes that isn't retired...So
at this point I'm thinking hard about dropping out, I've gained stamina and
energy this week which I attribute to pushing myself more while I'm here.
Angie has been going to a local gym crossfit-like (but not actually crossfit)
and wants me to go too, I'm considering it.
I don't remember if I told you guys but last year I did Couch to 5K, up until
the weather got cold last fall I was "running" (jogging slowly) 9 miles a
week...

I can see the advantages from the collective group-think stuff, as we had a
situation with neighborhood youngsters pilfering valuables from unlocked cars,
and the information sharing that occurred resulted in a very prompt and
effective resolution involving the perps and the local gendarmes. This was much
like what Max described.

However, as Clay described, the developer’s efforts to rape and pillage
personal information is pretty awful. I didn’t look into the web based
approach, but considering what they were trying to get out of me, I suspect
they’ll still try and get whatever they can.

Thank goodness ours is nowhere near that restrictive, but I’ve heard stories
about ones that are. It seems like the more expensive the properties, the more
restrictive the rules get from my experience.

As for the NextDoor app, my oldest son is on it and shares stuff with me, but
it’s so intrusive as to the information they want from users I won’t join up.
If it wasn’t for the MB groups I’m in on FB I would bail from that, too.

Come to the hospital in Gardner and watch the turkeys flock under the wind
turbines. You can see them from where I go to cardiac rehab. Now if I could
only sit under there with my shotgun...
The really big turbines being installed today barely make any noise at all.
Gardner has I think 4 1.5MW turbines, you can go stand under them, they're much
quieter than a 300D idling. (MB content) :)

How does REA have any justification when other subsidies don't? If people want
to live out there why is it okay to use other people's money to give them
electricity?
Really what I'm asking is if "no subsidies" is the goal how can there be some
subsidies?
For the record rural electrification was a hugely important step for our
country and is a big part of the reason for our safe and stable food supply
which is a big part of blah blah etc... I'm just curious as this seems like a
"blind spot" subsidy...

about.  My area seems to be mostly rich white people in the luxury gated
resort lifestyle communities down the road whinging about rich white
people first world issues.

It is both entertaining, intriguing, and disturbing kinda all at once.

Here is an example:

Derek Zinkeler , Seabrook Island

SI club horses shi**ing on the beach and its not being picked
 up

I just took my 2 dogs to the beach to run in the designated dog area and
encountered the horse beach ride with their club employee on their cart
following them. After the horses did their business it was left behind.
This was all in front of the SI town code enforcement employee. He
didn't say anything to them. I asked the club employee why she didn't
pick this up. Her answer "I will get it on the way back". Too late for
me because my dogs had already gotten into it. Is this acceptable? If my
dog sh** on the beach and I didn't pick it up until later is that ok?
No! I went to the Club Equestrian Center and talked to their manager. He
was apologetic and said he would take this up with his staff. I then
went to the Town Hall and explained this to Joe Cronin our town
administrator. I asked him if he was busy and he said yes but would
listen to me. My question being is what is the beach patrol for? Could
this employee have not asked the club member to clean up after their
horses? He was dismissive and of no help. Not only is the beach patrol a
waste of our funds but also our town officials from what I've seen. This
is not a good way to represent Seabrook to potential homeowners and club
members. As a potential member why would anyone buy into this?

Minimal. Towing anything will sap the range due to extra weight and
aerodynamic drag. I've never seen one fitted with a towing hitch.

I've seen them in red and sort of a silver/gray.

I don't think any of these cars will move with something plugged into the
charge port.

I can imagine tapping straight into the battery with a couple of 3500W
generators on a trailer hitch mounted cargo rack, 240v rectified and wired in
series to charge the 400v traction battery as I fly down the freeway at 75mph
and 12-15kw draw.
I can also imagine myself walking away from the car, forgetting about the
generators, and setting the battery on fire.

Mitch.

It was Rabbit, not Beetle, to match the EV. Front half, and with a Cabrio

on to the pusher/trailer. Looked like a very practical arrangement, a
permanent tailwind.

I think one of those receiver-hitch luggage carriers with a nice little

I doubt that any of the new EV's could make use of, or even tolerate, its

Pretty much do now AFAIK. The issue is that not all chargers have the same
